Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS Preventing Pool Contaminations

Each year pool contaminations are the leading cause of unscheduled pool closures. These are preventable by you the user!! What can we do you ask? We are glad you asked so you can do your part.

- Go to the bathroom before your swim and take frequent bathroom breaks during the swim. Don’t ask, just take everyone on regular breaks!!! - Incontinent individuals, children under 3 & those not toilet trained must wear an approved swim pant. & plastic pool pant under their bathing suit. - Plan to eat after your swim. Refrain from eating before or during your swim. This greatly reduces the chances of a vomit contamination. - Stay at Home if you are sick or have diarrhea. Wait 2 weeks after symptoms subside before returning to the pool. Diarrhea is indicative of sickness.

What is a contamination and why is the pool closed?

Contamination can be vomit, feces or blood. AHS has regulations regarding these contaminations that we follow in order to keep our patrons as safe as possible from illness. The length of time a pool is closed depends on a variety of factors but can be from 20min to more than 25hrs.

What is the cost of a contamination?

The obvious cost is lost recreation time for all users. In addition, there is an increase in potential health risks and maintenance costs along with lost wages & revenue. On average the pools see 40+ contaminations each year which results in over a week’s worth of lost time at the pools.

Aquatics

Please note that as operators of the facilities, we too are frustrated by these preventable occurences. Respectfuly, we ask our users to help keep the pools open as much as possible by following these guidelines.

Captain Hoy’s Flight Across the Canadian Rockies On August 7, 1919, Captain E.C. Hoy made the first air crossing of the Canadian Rockies, flying from Vancouver through Lethbridge and on to Calgary. The flight is a National Historic Event and a monument in Galt Gardens commemorates the event,

Captain Hoy, a First World War flier, was a member of the Vancouver branch of the Aerial League of Canada. The League decided to attempt the flight and chose the pilot by drawing lots – Hoy won.

Several groups were interested in starting an air mail service across Canada and it was recognized that the greatest difficulty was to prove it was possible to fly across the Canadian Rockies. A contest was set up by the Vancouver World, Lethbridge Herald and Calgary Herald newspapers. The first person to perform the flight would receive a $1000 prize. The catch was that the flight had to be undertaken in under eighteen hours.

The flight needed advanced planning – carrying and stashing extra gas along the route and corresponding with communities along the way to arrange landing locations and more. The flight was a success. Hoy was greeted by a large crowd in Lethbridge but stayed only a short time as he had to get to Calgary. He landed in Calgary as darkness fell but flares were set to show him the direction of the wind and to highlight the landing spot.

Common in Lethbridge from May to August

Habitat: open areas with willow and birch shrubs, agricultural areas, and riparian regions

Feeding: fly catches aerial insects and will occasionally eat berries

Call is a quick, loud, chattering kit-kit-kitter-kitter

Rarely walk or hop on the ground—prefers to fly

Latin name is tyrannus tryannus perhaps to indicate the bird’s tyrannical behaviour

As you walk along the forest edge near the overgrown fields in midsummer you may notice an agile bird flittering about. It may look like this bird is wearing a business suit,  Will defend its territory by pursuing, pecking, and with the characteristic black above and white below with plucking until the threat is white tipped-tail. This bird means business so take pause gone and enjoy the display. The Eastern Kingbird is common in Lethbridge from May to August.  Named for the red crown that

Watch your step and be careful not to approach too closely as the Kingbird is a fearless defender of its territory. Known as a brawler, the Eastern Kingbird will take on much bigger birds like crows, herons, and hawks.

Take a moment to observe the Kingbird as it pursues its food! The quick nature of the Eastern Kingbird’s twists, turns, flips, and stalls are sure to impress you as it aggressively catches aerial insects like moths, grasshoppers, and butterflies. Sources: Birds of Alberta, AllAboutBirds.org

Book an appointment with your optometrist and have the comfort of knowing an eye health or vision problem won’t prevent your child from reaching their full learning potential. Children’s eye exams are covered by Alberta Health. Find an optometrist at: optometrists.ab.ca/findanoptometrist

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT! • 80% of classroom learning is visual. • 1 in 4 children have some form of vision problem. • More than 43% of children who have a vision or eye health problem can pass a basic vision screening or sight test. An eye exam by an optometrist is accurate, and will check for a number of possible vision problems. • Children with vision problems are often misdiagnosed as having learning or behavioural disabilities.

Eye See . . . Eye Learn® is a program that provides kindergarten students (or those going into kindergarten in September) with an eye exam by an optometrist, which is covered by Alberta Health. If required, kindergarten students also receive a FREE pair of eyeglasses. Visit optometrists.ab.ca/esel for more information.
