Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS Do you use chlorine or salt in your pool?
FAQ’s - Water Treatment
The nature of this question refers to the disinfection system used to rid the water of micro-organisms and contaminents thus keeping the water safe to swim in. The person asking this question is under the impression that salt is a form of disinfection however the fact is that all pools in Alberta use chlorine as the disinfecting agent to keep the water clean. Salt systems are one of the ways of generating the chlorine needed for disinfection. Other ways to generate chlorine include gas chlorine, liquid chlorine and dry chlorine puck systems. Facilities may supplement the chlorination system with other forms of disinfection such as ozone and UV systems but the primary system is chlorine. In Lethbridge Fritz, Nicholas and Siwik pools use dry chlorine puck systems and Henderson uses gas chlorine along with UV on the Spray Park. In addition to disinfection systems every pool must have a filtration system which the water flows through. There are 3 types of filters - Sand, Cartridge and open & closed Diatomaceous Earth (DE for short). Recently Perlite has been used as a substitute for DE. The most commonly used is the sand filter (These can be found at Nicholas Sheran, Fritz Sick and Stan Siwik Pools. The new Henderson Pool uses a closed system and the DE substitute, Perlite). Essentially these filtration systems allow water to flow through them while trapping dirt, foreign material etc. As the filter traps more of these materials the pressure will build up and eventually the system has to be “backwashed” which essentially cleans the filters so they can be put back into use again. In order to ensure that the water quality is good at each of the facilities regular water tests are done - approximately 4x per day. Water samples are also sent weekly to the Health Department for more stringent testing. All of the systems in place are constantly monitored and adjusted as necessary so that the water is safe. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make the pools a safe place to play.

Lethbridge Public Health Unit Sixty years ago this year, in 1958, the Lethbridge Public Health Unit was formed. In July 1958, it was announced that Dr. Hugh M. Brown would lead the new health unit. The 4 July 1958 Lethbridge Herald noted that his appointment marked the “first-time that Lethbridge has had a full-time medical officer of health.” Dr. Norman Baster, who had been the previous medical officer of health, had been part-time. One of Dr. Brown’s first tasks was to ensure the new health unit had all of the medical supplies and other equipment it needed. The plan was for the health unit to be ready when school resumed in September 1958. Public health had previously been the domain of the City and the school district. Health officials, doctors and nurses, who had previously been employed by the city and the school board, were now directly employed by the health unit. The old health board was disbanded and a new health unit board created. Representing Lethbridge City Council on the new board were Aldermen Black, Vaselenak, Wilton and Lakie.

Christmas Bird Count Did you know?
Photo: Ken Orich
“Prior to the turn of the 20th century, people engaged in a holiday tradition known as the Christmas “Side Hunt”: They would choose sides and go afield with their guns; whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won.
Did You Know?
Conservation was in its beginning stages around that era, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman, an early officer in the then nascent Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition – a “Christmas Bird Census” – that would count birds during the holidays rather than hunt them.

This year is the 119th annual Christmas Bird Count. Christmas Bird Counts are conducted between December 14th and January 5, inclusive dates, each season. Each count takes place in the same established 15-mile (24km) wide diameter circle every year. Every CBC is done by willing and dedicated volunteers. CBCs are a critical part of Citizen Science. Data provided helps researchers, biologists and wildlife agencies to study the longterm health and status of bird populations across North America. Lethbridge CBC averages 42 different species per count with 41 species counted in 2017. 18,689 Canada Geese were counted in 2017. Canada Geese, Mallards, Pigeons, Magpies, Northern Flickers, Starlings, and House Sparrows are some of the most frequent birds counted.
This year the Lethbridge Christmas Bird Count will be Sunday, December 16th

Retrain your Sweet Tooth to Avoid Christmas Baking Temptations Start by eating regular meals throughout the day, choosing a variety of whole and minimally-processed foods and use your hunger and fullness cues to guide your eating. Next, reduce foods high in sugar but low in nutrients. For adults aged 20-50, the top five sources of added sugar are pop, energy and sports drinks, grain-based desserts (e.g. cake, cookies), fruit drinks, candy and sugars/honey. Lastly, increase your exposure to less sweet options, then repeat. Researchers suggest the more often you try something, the more likely you are to accept and even start to enjoy the food.

Children with poor physical literacy struggle as adults
Children who never learn to read or write become adults who can’t read or write. Should we be surprised that children who never develop movement skills become inactive, uncoordinated adults? Children’s failure to develop their movement skills reduces their interest and ability to participate in physical activity, and also limits their essential mobility skills into adulthood. Movement skills aren’t just for playing sports. Movement skills are essential to basic health and survival: “It’s not just about sport. It’s about being able to even participate in a world that’s very cold and being able to not slip and fall,” says Dr. Dean
Kriellaars, leading expert. Physical literacy is seen as a “vaccine” against the inactivity crisis. Some communities are trying to promote physical literacy and physical activity in general by creating infrastructure and special programming The overriding message is that physical literacy isn’t just for sports. It’s part of a spectrum of essential life skills that children need to live complete, healthy lives.

St. Francis Park is a quaint little park surrounded by residential housing with three walkway accesses via St. George Road N, St. Francis Road N, and St. David Road N. Keep your eyes peeled or you might miss the entrances to the park. There is a pathway through the centre of the park that meanders around the trees and playground and would be fun for a little one to follow along or step off the trail and enjoy the open space. The park and playground at St. Francis will take your little ones on an imaginative adventure with obstacles to climb, slides to escape on and many hideaways to explore. This is a quiet park with lots of mature trees, making it perfect for a quiet afternoon of play for your little ones.
