Changes coming to Water Safety Courses
The Red Cross has decided to turn down their involvement in water safety throughout 2022. By January 2023 there will no longer be Red Cross Water Safety Instructor courses or lessons. Standard First Aid will continue. The Lifesaving Society is taking over that responsibility. We are working with them to program our new Swim for Life Instructor courses and lessons. We're excited for this new chapter and look forward to working with everyone!

Have you ever wondered why agricultural lands across the prairies are divided into one square mile sections with Range Roads and Township Roads? Could you find a site based on the Township map if someone noted they lived at SW13 15 18 W4?
In 1872, the Canadian government passed the Dominion Lands Act. The Act set out homestead policies, allowed land to be set aside for individuals, railway construction, the Hudson’s Bay Company and for other uses. The Act also outlined a standard measure for surveying and subdividing the land.
The Dominions Land Act was repealed in 1930. Between 1870 and 1930, approximately 625,000 land patents were issued to homesteaders, encouraging hundreds of thousands of settlers to move into the prairies.
The Dominion Land Survey started the year prior, in 1871. It became the “world’s largest survey grid laid down in a single integrated system.”

The Dominions Land Act and Dominion Land Survey both indelibly changed and created the geography of the prairies as we know it today.

Curated by Bobbie Fox
For two years during the late 1960s, a teen coffeehouse opened at 1287 3 Avenue South. The Inn Purple was a place where teens and young adults could hang out, be artistic, and listen to music without adults. Famed singer, Gordon Lightfoot, even made an appearance there when he was in town.

Not Just Sleep: Hibernation
Hibernation is a way for many creatures – from butterflies to bats to survive cold, dark winters without having to forage for food or migrate.
When animals hibernate, they aren’t sleeping, it is a hypothermic condition to save energy during cold seasons by lowering body temperature, metabolism, breathing, and heart rate .
There are three types of hibernation true hibernation, brumation and torpor.
True hibernation is characterized by low body

temperature, slow breathing, low heart rate, and a low metabolic rate.
Brumation is the hibernation like state that reptiles and amphibians enter during very cold weather.
Torpor, or light hibernation, helps species survive the harsh winter months.
Groundhogs are one of Canada’s largest true hibernators, going into a deep, comatose sleep.
Northern Leopard Frogs is a brumating species and Grizzly Bears and Richardson’s Ground Squirrels are light hibernators.

The Lethbridge Sport Council extends our congratulations to Darin for his accomplishment!
Examiner, Grand Master C.K. Choi is one of the most senior and highly respected Tae Kwon Do pioneers, who was the world’s first Tae Kwon Do Champion in 1962
Grand Master Gibson’s 9th dan promotion was the result of a 40 year journey training, competing, teaching, and promoting Tae Kwon Do nationally and internationally Grand Master Gibson is one of only two martial artists to be granted the highest honour of ninth dan by Grand Master C.K. Choi, and the only one in North America.
The promotion follows a successful, but intensive two day, 6 hour test in which mastery of all aspects of Tae Kwon Do were demonstrated to the satisfaction of the examiner. The exam was held at Legacy Tae Kwon Do Lethbridge, which also serves as the headquarters for United Traditional Tae Kwon Do Canada (UTTC).
“To be recognized in this manner by a pioneer who was involved in the early development of Tae Kwon Do is certainly the professional highlight of my martial arts career,” says Gibson. “To be able to take the test in front of family, friends, students and my home community definitely added pressure, but also a tremendous amount of satisfaction to the accomplishment."

T Y S U N T A L L M A N
Tysun Tallman received his name from his uncle Mike Bruised Head PhD, who was part of an historic 1980 trip to England, where across the Atlantic Ocean he was the first to offer the pipe to the elders.
Tysun started his sports career while in elementary school where he had a hard time relating and fitting in with others. He played sports initially to fit in with his peers and realized he still stood out, but on his terms! He began playing every competitive sport he could afford to continue defining himself through fitness and eventually coaching, where he could apply his knowledge in a way that could help others.

Tysun finds magic in movement and challenging himself physically but also in learning more about how movement and exercise can save people He developed a deep passion for training and competition where he chose to broaden his approach provincially on cultural and wellness programs and through his university experience: Public Health Policy, Health Sciences, Kinesiology and Physical Education.
As Tysun continues to learn and share his passion for sport and community wellness he is honoured to help others on their wellness path.
