Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS Do you use chlorine or salt in your pool?
FAQ’s - Water Treatment
The nature of this question refers to the disinfection system used to rid the water of micro-organisms and contaminents thus keeping the water safe to swim in. The person asking this question is under the impression that salt is a form of disinfection however the fact is that all pools in Alberta use chlorine as the disinfecting agent to keep the water clean. Salt systems are one of the ways of generating the chlorine needed for disinfection. Other ways to generate chlorine include gas chlorine, liquid chlorine and dry chlorine puck systems. Facilities may supplement the chlorination system with other forms of disinfection such as ozone and UV systems but the primary system is chlorine. In Lethbridge Fritz, Nicholas and Siwik pools use dry chlorine puck systems and Henderson uses gas chlorine along with UV on the Spray Park. In addition to disinfection systems every pool must have a filtration system which the water flows through. There are 3 types of filters - Sand, Cartridge and open & closed Diatomaceous Earth (DE for short). Recently Perlite has been used as a substitute for DE. The most commonly used is the sand filter (These can be found at Nicholas Sheran, Fritz Sick and Stan Siwik Pools. The new Henderson Pool uses a closed system and the DE substitute, Perlite). Essentially these filtration systems allow water to flow through them while trapping dirt, foreign material etc. As the filter traps more of these materials the pressure will build up and eventually the system has to be “backwashed” which essentially cleans the filters so they can be put back into use again.
Aquatics
In order to ensure that the water quality is good at each of the facilities regular water tests are done - approximately 4x per day. Water samples are also sent weekly to the Health Department for more stringent testing. All of the systems in place are constantly monitored and adjusted as necessary so that the water is safe. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make the pools a safe place to play.

Fort Whoop-Up One hundred and fifty years ago, in early 1870, Fort Hamilton was built at the confluence of the St. Mary and Belly (Oldman) Rivers. The fort was constructed at a traditional gathering site of the Siksiksitaapi people by Alfred B. Hamilton and John J. Healy. The site was chosen for a trading post where bison robes and other hides were trades for items including firearms, food, cloth, household items and whisky. The original fort was damaged by fire and replaced with a larger one called Fort Whoop-Up. Fort Whoop-Up was one of approximately fifty trading posts that operated across southern Alberta. Fort Whoop-Up, though, was the largest and best known of these sites. In the fall of 1874 the North-West Mounted Police arrived at the fort. With the arrival of the Mounted Police, some of the traders fled; others became legitimate traders.
Fort Whoop-Up in time became the home of Dave Akers who ranched and market gardened, rented space to the Mounted Police, and provided a stopping point for stagecoach and mail service.
Akers was killed in a business dispute in 1893 and the fort was abandoned and in time lost to floods. A replica of the fort was constructed in Lethbridge in 1967. The replica was redesigned in the 1980s and continue to operate in Indian Battle Park. Fort Whoop-Up had a short history but dramatically changed southern Alberta, especially in its impacts (primarily negative) on the Siksiksitaapi people.

Flying can burn a lot of calories! For wildlife, saving energy is very important, especially in winter. That’s why owls spend much of their day perched in a tree napping & listening for their next meal. After hunting, an owl will often return to their preferred perch for more rest. These areas are called roosting sites.

Get Outside this Winter! On your next adventure, look forward to:
During the winter season many people limit their time outdoors. This can lead to a disconnection with nature! Spending time together outside as a family is one of the most important activities we can engage in! Meaningful outdoor experiences benefit children and inspire them to love and care for nature. In fact, children who are connected to nature have better health and higher satisfaction with life. How do you create nature champions? Provide fun, hands-on nature experiences Take learning outside Share your love of the outdoors with children Have kids note 3 good things in nature everyday to improve their connection to nature! REPEAT!!! Source: https://www.childrenandnature.org/wp-content/uploads/ NaturePlayInfographic.pdf

It’s Pow-Wow Time What to Expect 2020 International Peace Pow-wow & Festival The GRAND ENTRY begins every session. Flag bearers, honor guard, Head Dancers and dignitaries dance in the dancers. The dancers follow in according to their categories. This is the most spectacular sight with 300 participants in full regalia, dancing into the arena single file. Then we get into the competitions based on age groups, Juniors 7-12, Teens 13-18, Adults 19+in these dance styles: Women’s Traditional - This is a stately dance, slowmoving bouncing step, rhythmic dipping with swaying in time to the beat of the drum. Dresses of buckskin, wool or other material are heavily decorated with beading, quillwork, elk teeth, bone, antler or shells. Men’s Traditional - Tempo is slower with the dancer telling a warrior story in sync with the drum. Eagle feather bustles; grouse feathers, deer, elk and porcupine headdresses are all part of this wonderful dance. Women’s Jingle - When a man’s granddaughter became very ill, he had a dream that showed him how to make the dress and was instructed to have her dance in it. When the dress was made, she wore it and danced, very weakly at first, but becoming stronger as she went on until she was healed. Her name was Maggie White. Men’s Grass - Once a young man, lame in one foot, longed ever so much to dance. He took that longing out onto the prairie, praying for guidance as he limped up a small hill. On top of that hill, it came to him -
he should develop his own style of dance. As he pondered this revelation, he looked down over the prairie with its swaying and swooping grasses. This, he realized, this could be his dance. And thus, so it is said, is the origin of the grass dance one might see at a powwow. The motion of the dance flows like the rippling prairie grass. Women’s Fancy is a faster, more expressive and energetic style. The dance is light, graceful, and very athletic. The dancer moves much like a butterfly, maybe a hummingbird, and her outfit is bright and colorful. Particular emphasis is given to the shawl, which is worn over the shoulders and spread out along the arms like wings. Men’s Fancy is a most intricate dance with jumps and twirls at the fastest tempo. The regalia is said to represent the rainbow spirits in its bright colors and flying feathers and ribbons. The Men’s Fancy dancer typically wears two bustles of bright colored feathers. Men’s Prairie Chicken - is the Blackfoot “be suts be wah sin” that has made its way into the Pow-wow circle. Each man wears a porcupine hair roach on his head and a prairie chicken feather bustle. The dancers step quickly, crouch and rise imitating the dance of the prairie chicken.
