Before the 19th Century, millions of bison roamed the grasslands of the Canadian prairies. At this time the “Kings of the Prairie” were used for their meat and marrow for sustenance, their hides for shelter and clothing, their bones for tools, and their dung for fuel. After an absence of over a century on July 29, 2018, 31 bison were released from the soft-release pasture in Panther Valley in the Eastern Slope of Banff National Park, and they now roam a 1,200 km2 reintroduction zone.

Mastering Movement Skills on Ice and Snow

A starter guide from Active for Life Living in Canada, there is always one thing we can be certain of: it’s going to get cold. And for most of the country that means there will be lots of ice and snow. You’re never far from mountains and snow, or even the ice rink. So to stay active outdoors for a good chunk of the year, it’s necessary to learn how to navigate the slippery and slushy white stuff. It’s all about building on the foundation of movement skills already learned on solid ground. If you can run, hop, throw, catch, jump, and balance your body in various ways, then you can learn to push, glide, and stop on ice, as well as slide, jump, and climb in snow.

When kids master these movement skills on ice and snow, winter no longer becomes an excuse to stay inside; instead, it opens up a whole world of fun activity for the whole family. We are lucky to live in a country with vast and wonderful wintery landscapes, so it’s essential to embrace the cold and enjoy activities that can lead to a lifetime of fitness and fun! Read more from Active for Life including a breakdown of how to get started and how to learn and practice those fundamental movement skills.

PARKS: Snow and Ice In Winter, Parks Staff work 7 days a week from 6 am to 2 pm. When there is no snow or ice to clear, staff change public garbages, set up seasonal displays, clean up leaves and prepare for the following summer season. In 2021, Parks staff cleared and sanded over 4000 kms of pathways. In fall and winter, Park Operations change focus to ensure major pathways and public buildings such as City Hall, Lethbridge Police Station, and public libraries are clear of ice and snow. All of this work is completed with only 20 staff members, compared to over 200 in spring and summer. Parks crews monitor and maintain nearly 215 kms of pathway and public property frontage in the winter. This work includes ice checks, sanding, de-icing, and clearing snow using backpack blowers, tractors and trucksters outfitted with blades or snowblowers and shoveling by hand . Areas and specific pathways are categorized into 4 priorities (length of pathway cleared):

Each time it starts snowing again (new snow event) priority routes reset, therefore, it may take longer to clear lower priority routes when it snows several days in a row. For more information on winter operations, check out Lethbridge.ca/snow

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Casavant organ at Southminster United Church with us. His music is a contrast in unpredictability, and Beethoven and Saint-Saëns push boundaries further. Let the inventiveness of these works transport you.
