Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Annual Maintenance Why are the Pools shut down for Annual Maintenance? The pools are shutdown in an effort to reduce the chances of an unexpected shutdown during regular operation of the facilities throughout the rest of the year and to keep the facilities in the best possible operating condition. Does this mean that there won’t be breakdowns outside of Annual Maintenance? Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that there will be no equipment malfunctions the rest of the year as Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik pools are relatively old facilities. Annual Maintenance is the best way to minimize the chances of breakdowns. During shutdown all equipment that is critical to the operation of the pool is serviced such as pumps, filters and chlorination systems. The pools are drained and cleaned (painted in the case of Fritz Sick and Stan Siwik). Other repairs and general maintenance of the remainder of the facility are also completed. Annual Shutdowns are scheduled to have the least impact on programs such as lessons, swim clubs etc. so dates are strategically placed between lesson sets.

Aquatics

Having safe water & safe facilities (clean & sanitary) is critical to the operation of the pools as Alberta Health Services conducts stringent water tests and regular inspections of the facilities to ensure that they are safe for the public. Recreation Excellence’s role is to work with the City to ensure this happens. Routine maintenance along with Annual Shutdowns helps to ensure that we are complying with all AHS guidelines.

Happy 50 th to Sik-ooh-kotoki Friendship Centre On May 14, 1969, the organizational AGM of the Native Friendship Society of Southern Alberta was held in the YWCA and everyone interested in the establishment of a friendship Centre in Lethbridge was invited to attend. Following the AGM, the initial concern was finding a building and in June 1970, the Lethbridge Friendship Centre opened in the old Hudson Bay building at the corner of 1 Avenue and 5 Street South with Rose Yellow Feet as the first Director.

Two hundred people attended the opening and Mayor Andy Anderson noted that the Lethbridge Friendship Centre

had to be recognized as a civic development within the city, done in the spirit of co-operation. Leroy Little Bear, past president of the Native Friendship Society of Southern Alberta and a director of the local society, said the biggest problem in the area is the misunderstanding between people.

Today the Friendship Centre, operated by the Sik-ooh-kotoki Friendship Centre Society, is located at 1709 2 Avenue South.

Join Paul Jones as he discusses some of the anatomical features that make pronghorn unique and why they really are the ‘movers” and shakers of the prairie mammals. Paul will discuss the daily and seasonal (including annual migration) movement patterns, obstacles they face while on the move, and potential solutions to make the landscape permeable for pronghorn movement. BE FIT FOR LIFE Feb 6 is Winter Walk Day What is physical literacy and where do I start? Physical Literacy is “the ability to move with confidence and competence in a wide variety of activities and environments.” Being physically literate is often just as important as reading and writing. So how can we get our children moving and playing more? First, we need to encourage them to get outside and play. Second, we should start joining in their play. And lastly, we shouldn't force them to play structured games. Get started with Winter Walk Day! On Wed. Feb 6th, be among the thousands of Albertan’s participating in an outdoor walk. You are invited to join our community walk at 12:10 pm at Lethbridge College.

Did You Know?

Please meet us in Centre Core (main entrance) and we will go for a 15 minute walk and finish with hot chocolate provided by Lethbridge College Student Association. Don't forget your toques, mittens and warm jackets as it might be cold.

Why Unplug? By graduation, the average teen will have spent more time watching screens than being in the classroom, playing sports and talking to their parents. (screensmart.ca)

Why Connect? Children and youth who are frequently connected to adults and other community supports are more likely to have a high standard of well-being in health and resiliency, and traits like strong academic and social performance, compassion, and leadership are highly promoted.
