Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. 50 Years of the City of Lethbridge Flag On 22 March 1971, Lethbridge City Council approved the City of Lethbridge flag. The resolution passed to adopt the flag noted, in part: “And whereas because of its historical significance and uniqueness the Fort Whoop-Up Flag has become a symbol of Lethbridge representing not only its background, old of story of the influence of our neighbours to the south of Canada, as related to our native people, but also of a city that defied the rigorous climate, geography, and isolation, to become first a coal mining town, to a farm and ranching pioneering community, to the centre of Canada’s irrigation farming, and now an industrial City with a future in education, culture, and a civilization built on an industrious multi-racial people upholding the principle of government under the rule of law, recognizing the worth and dignity of the individual and the right of all citizens to share in its future and the future of Canada.”

Historian and Lethbridge Historical Society president, Dr. Alex Johnston, used a historical photograph to design what he considered the Whoop-Up Flag. While the photograph was black and white, the colours were known from contemporary descriptions, which noted that the flag was the colours of the American flag. Newer and better photographs have been found of the Fort Whoop-Up flag and Johnston’s design does not accurately reflect the flag. However, it was Johnston’s design that was accepted by Lethbridge City Council in 1971 and which remains as the flag of the city today.

HELPING TEENS REACH THEIR POTENTIAL... “I first became involved with United Way through a campaign in my workplace. I was looking for different ways to get involved in the community and met with a United Way staff member. She said, ‘I know exactly what I’m going to connect you with.’ I went to an initial meeting and heard a couple of amazing speakers talk about the work United Way was doing in the community, including some of the work they were doing with vulnerable youth to help them finish high school. I thought, ‘This is exactly the room I need to be in right now’. If we can unleash that untapped potential in our community, the world’s going to change. All it takes is, ‘Yeah, I’m in’.”

Winter Walk Day, Feb 3 Open the Door and Go for it! Winter Walk Day encourages people across Alberta to be active outdoors in winter. Last year more than 100,000 Albertans took part. While we can't join together in large groups this year, we are encouraging Albertans to walk where they live and explore their own local area in a safe way based on their local health guidelines. Take part on your own, with your family, or challenge co-workers to participate. There is no cost to join the event but you can register at shapeab.com/winter-walk-day to receive information and reminders, and to help organizers understand the event's impact. So bundle up, take a walk, and remind yourself how enjoyable it is to be outside - even in winter!

HOW TO CREATE A CALM KIT FOR YOUR CHILD Choose a brightly colored bag or box - you could even use an old shoe box which your child can decorate with colors or stickers. Fill it with:

Public Information & Events

Things to touch: stress ball, sensory ball, bean bag, slime, playdough, or soft toy to cuddle Things to smell: scented toys, scented playdough (make your own with a few drops of vanilla essence or essential oil), or a scented pen Things to taste: a box or raisins, healthy fruit snack, crackers or fruit juice Things to look at: bubbles, a snow globe, light up toy, fidget spinner, or a photo album filled with people and pets that we love. Things to listen to: rain stick, wind-chime, something that jingles or plays music. A mindful activity: favorite book, journal, coloring book or a sticker book.

34

These are just some suggestions. Make sure you choose things that are appropriate for your child’s age and stage of development. If you notice that your child is becoming worried or overwhelmed, or you sense a change in their behaviour, you can encourage them to choose something from their calm bag/box to help support them.
