ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Admission Policy Why is there an Admission Policy at the pools?

As “the Lifeguarding Experts” the Lifesaving Society has been setting the standard for Lifeguarding for over 45 years. The Lifesaving Society helps to set Aquatic Safety Standards in Canada in an effort to fulfill their Mission Statement : To prevent drowning and water-related incidents for all Canadians by providing: - lifesaving, lifeguarding, and leadership education - public education - water safety research In the Public Aquatic Facility Safety Standards manual it is stated that Admission Policies shall be established as part of the facility rules including items such as minimum age and requirements for supervision of children. As an affliate of the Lifesaving Society Recreation Excellence follows the standards set out by the Society and their efforts to prevent drowning. As a responsible company Recreation Excellence makes every effort to ensure the safety of the patrons that come to the facilities we operate. The Lifesaving Society continually reviews and makes changes to standards and as such items like Admission Policies can change as standards change. The current policy for supervision at the Lethbridge Pools is: “Children under the age of 7yrs and those that can’t swim must be within arms reach of an Adult” If you are not within arms reach you have gone too far - it only takes seconds for the unthinkable to happen and even though pools are supervised it is everyone’s responsibility for the safety of a child. Recreation Excellence is currently in the process of reviewing and updating the Admission Policy to ensure it is up to the standards set out by the Lifesaving Society and Province of Alberta.

Lethbridge’s 1 st Election In February 1891 the new Town of Lethbridge held its first election. By acclamation, Charles A. Magrath became first mayor. Elected as first councillors were John Henry Cavanah, Harry Bentley, William Colpman, Mr. Turner, Thomas Curry, and William Henderson.

A careful and judicious management of the affairs of the town with due regard to economy, is the best evidence to the investor, whether great or small, that his rights as a citizen will be protected, and therefore an inducement to settle in our midst, and assist in building up, what nature has intended to be a large and At the inaugural Town Council meeting prosperous city.” on 3 February, Mayor Magrath declared: Today, 125 years later, Lethbridge is a “Lethbridge is the youngest town in the “flourishing city” with nearly 100,000 Canadian North-west, and possesses citizens. advantages unequalled by any of her sister towns. We are all of one opinion as to her future, and I am sure there is not the slightest doubt existing in the minds of any one present that we will be called upon to witness, if we live the allotted ‘three score and ten years,’ a large and flourishing city on the present townsite….

Did You Know?

To-day is a red letter day in the history of Lethbridge, who has not unbounded faith in her future? That progress, however, which is assuredly hers, can be accelerated or very much retarded through the measures passed by her first civic government.

White-tailed Prairie Hare Did you know? 

 

 

White-tailed Prairie Hares or Jackrabbits are found throughout the prairies, parkland and cultivated regions of Alberta. Jackrabbits prefer open habitat because they depend on their running speed for protection from enemies.

Did You Know?

Among the most solitary of hares, the white-tailed jackrabbit is usually found alone, and only briefly interacts with other hares during the breeding season.

24

Breeding takes place from late February to mid-July. Females may produce between 1 and 4 litters per year, usually of 4 or 5 young, after a gestation period of 30 to 43 days. Young begin foraging on their own at two weeks of age and are weaned at one month old. The young are completely independent at two months of age. Sources: http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/ & www.arkive.org

For more details: Box 1691, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 4K4 LethbridgeNatureSociety@gmail.com www.NatureLethbridge.ca

White-tailed Prairie Hares are commonly known as Jackrabbits or White-tailed Jackrabbits. Hares turn white in the winter, whereas rabbits do not. There are two types of hares in Alberta, the Snowshoe Hare and White-tailed Prairie Hare. The only rabbit in Alberta is the Nuttall’s Cottontail. Hares are born fully furred, able to see and capable of independent movement. Jackrabbits are capable of bursts of speed up to 65 kmph (40mph) and can jump higher than 3.6 meters (12 ft.) Jackrabbits are believed to live for up to five years.

Junior Boys’, Teen Boys’ and Men’s Traditional has evolved from the wellknown “old time Sioux” style of the 1940’s. It is slower with the dancer is said to be re-enacting the movement of a warrior searching for the enemy. Eagle feather bustles; grouse feathers, deer, elk and porcupine headdresses are all part of this wonderful dance. Junior Girls’, Teen Girls’ and Ladies’ Jingle dress dance is said to be a healing dance originating with the Ojibwa. When a man’s granddaughter became very ill, he had a dream that showed him how to make the dress and was instructed to have her dance in it. When the dress was made, she wore it and danced, very weakly at first, but becoming stronger as she went on until she was healed. The jingle dress makes a very distinct sound. Medium tempo.

Junior Girls’, Teen Girls’ and Ladies’ Fancy is a faster, more expressive and energetic style. The dance is light, graceful, and very athletic. The dancer moves much like a butterfly, and her outfit is bright and colorful. Particular emphasis is given to the shawl, which is worn over the shoulders and spread out along the arms like wings.

Junior Boys’, Teen Boys’ and Men’s Fancy is the most intricate dance with jumps and twirls at the fastest tempo. The regalia is said to represent the rainbow spirits in its bright colors and flying feathers and ribbons. The Men’s Fancy dancer typically wears two bustles of bright colored feathers. Junior Boys’, Teen Boys’ and Men’s Chicken is the Blackfoot dance that has made its way into the Pow-wow circle. Each man wears a porcupine hair roach on his head and a feather bustle. The dancers step quickly, crouch and rise imitating the dance of the prairie chicken.

Junior Girls’, Teen Girls’ and Ladies’ Traditional - Like all dance styles, these have strong roots in customs and traditions. This is a stately dance, slow-moving bouncing step, rhythmic dipping with swaying in time to the beat of the drum. Dresses of buckskin, wool or other material are heavily decorated with beading, quillwork, elk teeth, bone, antler or shells.

Jr. Boys’, Teens’ and Men’s Grass Many believe that the Omaha tribe originated the dance in their warrior societies from the movements of the early scouts preparing a camp site. The scouts would dance in a special way to flatten high grasses. The motion of the dance flows like the rippling prairie grass. Medium tempo.

The GRAND ENTRY begins every session. It is lead by the flag bearers and dignitaries. The dancers follow according to their categories. This is the most spectacular sight with 300 participants in full regalia, dancing into the arena single file. Then we get into the competitions based on gender, age groups and DANCE STYLES:
