Welcome to the July 2017 Recreation & Culture Guide A Message from Mayor Chris Spearman On behalf of Lethbridge City Council, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all our citizens a Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. As 2018 commences it brings with it new hopes, goals, and dreams. For those of you who made New Year’s resolutions to embrace a healthier lifestyle, this month’s issue outlining the recreational and leisure activities offered in the City of Lethbridge will support you in your efforts. The Recreation & Culture Guide provides our citizens with an excellent overview of what is available for every member of the family. Additionally, the Guide is full of other useful information to enhance creativity, fitness, arts, science, and friendships. It’s never too late to start learning something new or pick up an activity that you used to pursue! Most importantly, remember you can multiply your enjoyment when you participate with your family and friends! Enjoy the winter weather and the numerous recreational facilities and activities that Lethbridge offers. Be sure to see the spectacular Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden Winter Lights Festival now on most evenings from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm until February 2nd, 2018. Check their website for the schedule. Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

Family Swim - Swim for Parent/Guardian(s) (1 or 2) with children (17yrs or younger / 18 -21 with valid Student ID) residing permanently in the same household. Note: Parent(s) or Guardian(s) must be in the water with children. Children under the age of 8 years and non-swimmers must be actively supervised within arms reach by a Parent / Guardian.
Open Swim - Unstructured swim that all participants may enjoy Note: Children under the age of 8 years and non-swimmers must be actively supervised within arms reach by a Parent / Guardian.
Senior Swim - Lane Swim for those 60 years of age & older. Note: Must actively particpate in the program by swimming lengths. Please choose the proper lane to swim in based on ability

Weight Room Use - Open to participants 16 years of age & older - Participants 14 - 15 years of age may attend with direct Parent / Guardian supervision - Youth/Children 13 and under are not allowed in the weight room Note: Proper gym attire is required (clean indoor closed toe & heel shoes, shorts or sweats and shirt) Jeans, sandals are not allowed. Registrations can be made by phone or in person - neither method takes precedent over the other Registration is on a first come first served basis Participants may register in a maximum of two (2) classes/session Participants may waitlist in any class Preparing to Register If you do not have an account you will need the following: - Name & birth date of account holder (Adult) - Name & birth date of participants - Home address, phone # and postal code - Program level, session & time. - Course # and alternatives if first choice is full - Payment information incl 3 digit # on credit cards for phone registrations Fees Fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. Cash, Debit, Visa, MC, Rec Ex Gift Card & cheque are accepted in person. Cheques are payable to Recreation Excellence. Post dated cheques are not accepted. A $25 charge will be applied to all NSF cheques. Only Visa & MC are accepted for phone registrations (Visa & MC Debit cards are not accepted)
- Withdrawals received more than ten (10) business days prior to the start of the lesson set or course will not be subject to a withdrawal fee. - Withdrawals made between three (3) and ten (10) business days prior to the lesson start date will be subject to a 10% withdrawal fee. The remaining balance may be left on your account for future use or a refund may be requested. Refunds of less than $5.00 will remain on the account. - You may withdraw and re-register into another program without penalty prior to three (3) business days before the lesson start date. - No refunds will be given if withdrawal is within three (3) business days of the lesson start date.

All transfers are subject to availability and may be made without penalty up to three (3) business days (Mon-Fri) prior to the lesson start date. Transfers made by Recreation Excellence will not incur a penalty. Any resulting increase in program fees due to the transfer must be paid by the customer at the time of transfer.
Medical / Relocation Withdrawals for medical / relocation reasons are permitted with no penalty prior to the lesson start date. Refunds for withdrawal after the lesson start date will result in a pro-rated refund or credit on account. Proof of medical / relocation must be provided within two (2) weeks of notification of withdrawal for refunds or credits to be issued.
Cancellations Programs with insufficient registration are subject to cancellation. Customers will be notified as soon as a decision regarding cancellation has been made. All efforts will be made to accomodate any registrants displaced by cancellations. A full refund or credit to account will be issued for courses cancelled by Recreation Excellence.
Visit Cards / Passes Passes are available in 1, 3, 6 and 12 month terms. Passes are non-transferable which means others cannot use them. Refunds for passes are granted only for medical or relocation reasons. Proof of medical and proof of relocation must be provided in each case for a refund to be issued. All requests must be made before the pass expiry date. Refunds will be pro-rated for the unused portion of the pass. Passes are valid at all pools so extensions will not be granted for Annual Shutdowns. Visit cards are transferable and do not expire. They are non-refundable
Lost or Stolen Cards At the request of the card holder lost or stolen cards will be replaced. A $6.00 lost card fee will apply (does not include GST).

Happy 60 th to Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge! The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge was established on 20 March 1958 with the plan to encourage, coordinate and promote the arts in Lethbridge & area. The original executive was Dr. Van Christou (president), Ted Godwin (vicepresident), Jessie Baalim (secretary) and David Howell (treasurer).
For the council’s 50th anniversary, the artwork titled Sphere of Social Consensus and Influence was unveiled on 7 Street South near the Council’s office. The piece, created by Carl Granzow, shared the names of the 16 founding organizations.
In 1983, on the 25th anniversary of the council, the City of Lethbridge declared April 10 to 16, 1983, “Allied Arts Council Week”.
It will be exciting to see what the Allied Arts Council has planned for 2018.

‘Wildlife of the Oldman River Valley’ Wednesday January 10 starting at 7pm in Helen Schuler Nature Centre Community Room ‘Wildlife of the Oldman River Valley’ is a full length wildlife documentary that was shot in the Oldman River valley by local wildlife photographer and filmmaker Rick Andrews. Capturing the area’s wildlife in each of the four seasons, this film also includes both underwater and night footage that collectively provide unique sights that even frequent visitors to this river valley may not have seen before.

The CAJG can be applied to many training situations, offering employers potential solutions to their workplace challenges. Located at the intersection of Scenic Drive (Hwy 4) and Mayor Magrath Drive (Hwy 5), the Chinook Tourist Centre park is a haven for travelers and residents alike. Complete with the tourist center and RV and trailer parking, this large park has much to offer, including shaded picnic area, exciting new playground, fitness equipment to get your feet moving and heart pumping, pathways and interpretive signs showcasing a little history of our fair city. The playground features an exciting sea-faring theme, giving kids an inspiring area to climb, swing and slide into adventures with boats, submarines, whales and anywhere their imagination can take them. Shinny Hockey
Beginner Skate: A slower-paced time for people to practice their skating basics. Skating aids are allowed during this skate. Helmets are recommended. Family Skate: A special time for parents and children (17 yrs. of age & under) to enjoy a skate together. Parent & Tot Skate: Free Fun time for parents & pre-school children to learn how to skate. Helmets are recommended. Public Skate: A skate open to everyone to enjoy. Senior Skate: A skate open for everyone 55 years and over.
Youth Shinny Hockey: For ages 5 to 15 years, shinny hockey is played with a sponge puck with no body contact and no slap shots. Play is on half ice and is coordinated by Ice Marshals. Players require a hockey stick, skates and a helmet. Adult Shinny Hockey: Informal hockey for adults is played with a hard puck with no body contact or slap shots. It is played on full ice and is self-supervised. Protective equipment is required. Senior Shinny Hockey: Senior shinny hockey is for adults 55 and over with no body contact and no slap shots. Protective equipment is required.

Get in shape with adult skating lessons! Learn proper techniques for the forward and backward stride, turning and stopping, and get an introduction to figure and power skating.
