Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada

Welcome to the January 2019 Recreation & Culture Guide A Message from Mayor Chris Spearman On behalf of Lethbridge City Council, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all our citizens a Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. As 2019 commences it brings with it new hopes, dreams, and goals. For those of you who made New Year’s resolutions to embrace a healthier lifestyle, this month’s issue outlining the recreational and leisure activities offered in the City of Lethbridge will support you in your efforts. The Recreation and Culture Guide provides our citizens with an excellent overview of what is available for every member of the family. Additionally, the Guide is full of other useful information to enhance creativity, arts, science, fitness and friendships. It’s never too late to start learning something new or pick up an activity that you used to pursue. Most importantly, you can multiply your enjoyment when you participate with your family and friends! Enjoy the winter weather and the numerous recreational facilities and activities that Lethbridge offers. Be sure to see the spectacular Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden Winter Lights Festival now on most evenings from 6 pm to 9 pm until February 2nd, 2019. Check their website for the complete schedule. All the best in the coming year, Lethbridge! Chris Spearman, Mayor City of Lethbridge

Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

Happy 100 th , Lethbridge Public Library In 1919, the Lethbridge Public Library had its start with a small collection of 3,000 books in two small rooms in the YMCA. The first Library board was composed of W.J. Nelson, H.W. Meech and Rev. C.E. Cragg. A.N. Filmer, L. McIndoe and Arthur Frayne acted as the first librarians. In 1920, Mary Hazel Bletcher was named Head Librarian, a position she held for decades.

The YMCA rooms served for a few years until a library building was opened in Galt Gardens on 23 January 1922. Money for the building was partly raised through a grant from the Carnegie Foundation but, as per Bylaw 133, the Carnegie name did not appear on the building and it was called the Lethbridge Public Library.

Lethbridge’s rapid growth in the 1950s and 1960s put pressures on the library. The building in Galt Gardens was expanded in 1951 and was joined by a North Lethbridge Library branch in 1956 and a South Lethbridge Library branch in 1961. These two branch locations were closed in the early 1970s.

The building in Galt Gardens served as the library until a new building was opened on 5 Avenue South in 1974 (expanded in 1992). The Crossings Branch was opened in 2010.

Jennifer Rose Sciarrino’s Ruffled Follicles and a Tangled Tongue features hand-carved stone sculptures and blown glass in organic forms, with video work exploring relationships between science fiction, feminism and the Anthropocene. In the upper gallery, Rosa Aiello’s The Coquette, The Prude includes a sound artwork of a train, echoing a narrative between stereotypical figures in photography.

January 17 | 8 PM to Midnight | $2 Gallery Admission

In 1963, French artist Robert Filliou proposed that 1,000,000 years ago, there was no art. Luckily for institutions like ours, Filliou pronounced that on the 17th of January, Art was founded on modest beginnings when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water. Now, somewhat jocularly, this annual celebration of Art’s Birthday is used as a way to recognize and applaud the presence of art in our lives!

Publication Studio Vancouver Workshop Registration limited to 6 people. Saturday, February 9 $20 | $15 with SAAG Pass Calling all publication enthusiasts! Lethbridge Sport Council Achievement Awards

Nomination Deadline Approaching But what are they and why should you nominate?

You might have heard the Lethbridge Sport Council Achievement Awards (LSCAA) are coming up in April (11th to be exact), but did you know the deadline to submit a nomination is January 31st, 2019? If you haven’t heard of them, they are like Lethbridge’s Oscars and they are kind of a big deal.

What exactly are the Achievement Awards? These awards recognize the athletes, coaches, officials, teams, businesses and others in sport that are outstanding in their own way. The thing they all have in common is they do amazing things in our community—whether it’s athletes representing us, or the others who make things happen behind the scenes. Check out the categories and think of someone who fits the bill. Then… nominate them! It only takes a few minutes to submit a nomination online at https://lethbridgesportcouncil.ca

So, why should I nominate someone?

• Outstanding people deserve recognition. Even if they make an impact quietly, there’s nothing wrong with spending one night in the spotlight! • The award they receive looks great on the wall. Just saying. • They aren’t handed out to just anyone, so it really is an honour. • Nominating someone for an Achievement Award lets them know that the community appreciates what they contribute.

I’m convinced. What are the categories?

Did You Know?

• Athletic Performance (junior, senior, master, athlete with a disability, Special Olympics, team and partner) • Sport Excellence (coaching, officiating, volunteering) • Leadership (individual and organization) • Spirit in sport (youth and adult) • Corporate

Henderson Lake Park is one of Lethbridge’s oldest and largest parks, it boasts mature trees, large man-made lake, gardens, picnic areas, playgrounds and over 7 km of pathway for walking, running or cycling. Plenty of open space is available for a game of soccer or frisbee, barbeque areas for small picnics, and large shelters that are available for private booking. The lake provides recreation year round, with a small boat launch for canoe and kayak access, bird watching, pike and walleye fishing from the dock or ice fishing and outdoor skating in winter. Henderson is home to 3 great playgrounds, with the largest being fully accessible on the parks north side. Smaller playgrounds are located on the west and east corners of the park. There are a number of facilities in and around Henderson Lake Park to visit and enjoy including Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens, SLP Skate Park, Spitz Stadium, Horseshoe Pits, Henderson Ice Arena, flower gardens, Henderson Lake Outdoor Pool, Henderson Golf Course and the park is home to many community events throughout the year.
