Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada
Welcome to the January 2020 Recreation & Culture Guide A Message from Mayor Chris Spearman On behalf of Lethbridge City Council, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all our citizens a Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. As 2020 commences it brings with it new hopes, dreams, and goals. For those of you who made New Year’s resolutions to embrace a healthier lifestyle, this month’s issue outlining the recreational and leisure activities offered in the City of Lethbridge will support you in your efforts. The Recreation and Culture Guide provides our citizens with an excellent overview of what is available for every member of the family. Additionally, the Guide is full of other useful information to enhance creativity, arts, science, fitness and friendships. It’s never too late to start learning something new or pick up an activity that you used to pursue. Most importantly, you can multiply your enjoyment when you participate with your family and friends! Enjoy the winter weather and the numerous recreational facilities and activities that Lethbridge offers. Be sure to see the spectacular Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden Winter Lights Festival now on most evenings from 6 pm to 9 pm but only until January 31st. Check their website for the complete schedule. All the best in the coming year, Lethbridge! Chris Spearman, Mayor City of Lethbridge

Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - What are the guidelines for Lane Swim? Lane Swim Etiquette Swimmers arriving at a pool should do three things before getting in the water:
Aquatics
1) Make note of “Fast, Medium, Slow” lane designations. If such signs aren't obvious at your pool, ask a lifeguard. a) An “Unstructured” lane may be available depending on the pool for activities such as water jogging etc. 2) Spend a few minutes observing and roughly timing the per-lap pace of swimmers already in the pool. 3) Select a lane containing swimmers moving as closely as possible to the pace that one realistically expects to swim throughout their entire workout rather than selecting a lane because there are no swimmers in it. a) A swimmer entering an open lane, or joining one person in a lane that's designated differently from their expected pace (i.e. faster swimmer in a “Slow” lane, or slower swimmer in a “Fast” lane), should stay aware of arriving swimmers, and be prepared to move to a more appropriate lane if / when other swimmers join them. 4) Follow the “Swimming Pattern” that is posted (i.e. - split lane or circular pattern) a) When entering a lane with one or two swimmers make sure to confirm the pattern with the other swimmers especially when switching from split to circular 5) Respect and work with other swimmers to best enjoy your experience. If there are any issues that arise please enlist the assistance of the pool staff. Respect their decisions.

Annexation of West Lethbridge, 1970 Fifty years ago, on 1 January 1970, Lethbridge changed dramatically when seven square miles of land west of the Oldman River was annexed by the City of Lethbridge.
to the community (geographically and philosophically) and would also ensure the centrality of the river valley and the parks the city was starting to develop there.
This wasn’t the first annexation in west Lethbridge. In 1968, a small area was annexed to provide the land required for the University of Lethbridge campus.
The annexation affected 29 landowners.
Another large annexation was in 1984. These annexations had a dramatic effect on Lethbridge, creating a city that spanned both sides of the river. They also meant infrastructure had to be built to connect both sides of the city as well as provide the services necessary for the newly developing west-side residential areas. Whoop-Up Drive Bridge was opened in 1975. Nicholas Sheran Park was constructed in 1974 and the Nicholas Sheran School opened in 1982. Planners of the time who promoted westside expansion of the city saw several benefits of the development across the river. The growth of Lethbridge in the 1950s and 1960s had been primarily on the far east side of the city which had pulled development around from downtown. West-side development would help ensure that downtown remained central

EMILY STRUGGLED AT SCHOOL, BUT A UNITED WAY PROGRAM HELPED HER GET ON TRACK “When I was in grade 11, I had a big falling-out with my family and ended up moving out. After I left my family home, I felt really overwhelmed by having to manage school and life. Just getting to school was a challenge on its own, even without the homework. I was falling behind. I would get the bare minimum done and I missed so many assignments. My attendance record was bad. Then I connected with a United Way high school completion program and the staff really motivated me to want to be there. They were people I needed to be accountable to. I knew that if I didn’t come to school and my marks started falling, or if they thought I wasn’t going to graduate, they’d notice: ‘Hey, what’s going on? Why aren’t you getting things done? We know you can do this.’”

Get Outside this Winter! On your next adventure, look forward to:
During the winter season many people limit their time outdoors. This can lead to a disconnection with nature! Spending time together outside as a family is one of the most important activities we can engage in! Meaningful outdoor experiences benefit children and inspire them to love and care for nature. In fact, children who are connected to nature have better health and higher satisfaction with life. How do you create nature champions? Provide fun, hands-on nature experiences Take learning outside Share your love of the outdoors with children Have kids note 3 good things in nature everyday to improve their connection to nature! REPEAT!!! Source: https://www.childrenandnature.org/wp-content/uploads/ NaturePlayInfographic.pdf
