Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada

A Message from Mayor Chris Spearman January 2021 Recreation and Culture Guide On behalf of Lethbridge City Council, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all our citizens a Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. As 2021 commences, it brings with it new hopes, dreams, and goals. For those of you who made New Year’s resolutions to embrace a healthier lifestyle, this month’s issue outlining the recreational and leisure activities currently available in the City of Lethbridge will support you in your efforts. Schedules at our facilities may change on short notice due to COVID-19, so it’s always a good idea to check ahead. And remember, if you have any questions about any City of Lethbridge programs or services, you can call 311 during business hours for all the answers. Outdoor activities are still the safest way to spend time near others. I want to thank everyone for all you have done as a community thus far to keep each other safe. We must continue to adhere to the guidelines in place to help stop the spread of COVID-19 as we work towards a full recovery. Keep up the good work, we will get there! All the best in the coming year, Lethbridge. Chris Spearman, Mayor City of Lethbridge

Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. How old is the Moose Lodge Building? When you look at this building at 1401 5 Avenue North, you may wonder how old this building is and its uses over the years. The historical resources inventory gives a construction date of pre-1925. This isn’t very exact. Further, the document complicates the matter by stating that a portion of the building may be the old North Ward School. This would mean that part of the building could date back to the 1890s.

when the building became the Ruthenian School, later Ukrainian School, and then Ukrainian Labor and Farmers Temple. It served as such until the 1940s, when the building was taken over by the federal government. The building next served as the Rainbow Room, a dance hall, and eventually became the Moose Hall.

So we set out to try and find the truth. In 1906, J.M. Reding and family purchased the old North Ward School that was located along 5 Avenue North. The Reding family moved into this building, using it as their home. Next door they built another building, which they called Reding Hall. It was used for dances and presentations. This building appears to have been constructed in 1910 and is the building which now serves as the Moose Lodge. Reding sold the building in 1911 to L.O. Watson, who turned it into a store. By 1913, the building was known as Unity Hall and operated as such into the 1920s,

FINDING HOME AGAIN... “My depression was so bad that it manifested as suicidal thoughts. By the time I was 18, it was way too much for me. I had no money. I had no education. I ended up leaving home. I would stay in the hospital for a 72-hour hold, or I’d go to a homeless shelter. I didn’t want to go home. Eventually, I was connected with a social worker through a program that’s supported by United Way. The social worker helped me get provincial disability support and access a range of services, including counselling, housing, peer support and skill development that made me feel more hopeful about my future. Today, I volunteer with youth as a peer support worker at the agency. It really helps me to be able to help others. I no longer feel like a burden on society.”

During periods of stress or worry, the body triggers a set of symptoms called "stress response." Breathing becomes shallow and rapid, heart rate increases, and muscles become tense. The opposition to the stress response is the "relaxation response." Breathing becomes deeper and slower, and symptoms of stress fade away. Deep breathing encourages this response.

Sit back or lie down in a comfortable position. Close your eyes, if you would like to do so. When you're learning, try placing a hand on your stomach. If you breath deeply enough, you should notice it rising and falling with each inhalation and exhalation. 1. Inhale. Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 secounds 3. Exhale. Breath out slowly through your mouth for 6 secounds. 4. Repeat. Practice for at least 2 minutes, but preferably 5 to 10 minutes.

The mental health benefits of parks are becoming increasingly recognized by urban planners and municipalities. One study found that higher levels of green space in a neighbourhood were associated with lower levels of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and stress.

Did You Know?

Another study revealed that individuals who moved to areas with more green space experienced significantly better mental health. Individuals who moved to areas with less green space showed significantly worse mental health in the year following the move.

Mental health practitioners also recognize the therapeutic value that park spaces can provide. A 2007 study of individuals with mental health illnesses reported over 90% of individuals benefited from green exercise activities.
