Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada
Welcome to the July 2018 Recreation & Culture Guide
Summer is finally here! It’s time to get active and enjoy all the fun things there are to see and do in our beautiful city.
On July 1st, celebrate our great nation by making your way to Henderson Lake Park or Galt Gardens for a full day of Canada Day ceremonies and activities, culminating with a spectacular fireworks display over Henderson Lake after the sun goes down. Then in early July, watch for an announcement for the grand opening of Legacy Regional Park in north Lethbridge! This 73 acre park will offer a multitude of new amenities for all of Lethbridge to enjoy including a skate park, water features, outdoor fitness equipment, tennis and pickleball courts, an amphitheatre and an American ninja-style obstacle course! Learn more on our website at: www.lethbridge.ca/legacypark. You’ll also want to bring the family to cheer on the Lethbridge Bulls at the newly renovated Spitz Stadium. New upgrades make this facility more accessible and enhance the spectator experience. Let’s go Lethbridge Bulls! Henderson Pool continues to be where residents and visitors choose to make a splash. I can’t think of a better way to make the most of a hot summer day than by enjoying our amazing water park. Jump in and join in the fun. Street Machine Weekend, Heritage Day, Farmer’s Markets and of course Whoop-up Days are other highlights that round out an impressive schedule of summer events in July and August. close by to stay on top of all the events scheduled in the coming months at the Galt Museum & Archives, Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, Fort Whoop Up, Helen Schuler Nature Centre, CASA and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery.

Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. FAQ’s - How Do I Become An Instructor & Lifeguard
The suggested first step is to take the the Standard 1st Aid (with CPR-C/AED) course. Then take the Bronze Medallion / Bronze Cross course - these 2 certifications allow you to apply as a Slide Attendant at Henderson Outdoor Pool. Next is the Water Safety Instructor course - this certification allows you to apply as an Instructor. Lastly is the National Lifeguard course - this certification allows you to apply as a Lifeguard. Bertram Brockhouse Bertram Brockhouse, a Nobel prize winning physicist, was born in Lethbridge on July 15, 1918. Unfortunately, it is not known at which Lethbridge hospital he was born.
The Brockhouses lived on a farm near Milk River where the family had homesteaded in 1910. The family remained near Milk River until the winter of 1926-27, when they moved to Vancouver, B.C. Brockhouse graduated from the University of British Columbia (BA) and the University of Toronto (MA and Ph.D.) He conducted research at Chalk Rivers and worked at McMaster University. In 1994, Bertram Brockhouse shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Clifford Shull for “pioneering contributions to the development of neutron scattering techniques for studies of condensed matter”, in particular “for the development of neutron spectroscopy.” Bertram Brockhouse passed away in 2003

Prickly Pear Cactus / Otahkoottsis Did you know?
Many residents and visitors of Alberta are surprised to learn that cactus grows readily in many places throughout Alberta. The prickly pear cactus is the northernmost native cactus in Canada, one of just a handful of cactus varieties found in Alberta.
Did You Know?
Lethbridge’s climate and soil conditions are prime for the Prickly Pear Cactus and a quick walk through the coulees at this time of year will confirm it! Keep your eyes out on South-facing coulee slopes and look for the bright yellow flowers at this time of year. Be mindful of the cacti as you crouch to enjoy the many wildflower blooms or if you plan to sit on the coulee slopes while taking a break from your walk
30
Opuntia polyacantha Haw.
Grows on dry ridges and exposed south-facing slopes that have gravelly soil.
Has up to a dozen waxy yellow flowers that are 5-7 cm across in bloom between May and July.
The stem is shaped like a flat beaver-tail.
Traditionally Blackfoot elders have used the needles of the Prickly Pear to help ease rheumatism by poking into the areas affected.
The Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society Join us to learn more about your natural world!
We are now in Field Trip Prickly pear cacti are edible (after removing the spines and inner seeds) Season! Get outside with us on an upcoming and is said to taste bland. The cacti will produce fruit which are a excursion. Check out favourite for many who know when to look. The fruit is about 2.5cm long and can be yellow, orange, or red. our website for a complete listing of Source: http://galileo.org/kainai/prickly-pear-cactus/ AND upcoming adventures at Common Coulee Plants of Southern Alberta (Bain, Flanagan, Kuijt) 2014

Lethbridge Lawn Bowling Club – Ages 11+ Bowls is a strategic, challenging and fun sport that can be enjoyed by anyone. It is a target sport played on a flat grass surface. It is similar in concept to the Italian game of Bocce or the French game Pétanque with the main distinguishing features being the playing surface, the biased bowl used, and the delivery method of the bowls. The game is played on a simple premise. Players deliver a set number of bowls, depending on the format of the game, to a pre-rolled target known as the ‘jack’. Players/teams take turns bowling with the goal of resting their bowls closer to the jack than any of their opponents’ bowls. Once both players/teams have delivered all their bowls and a score is determined, everyone bowls back in the opposite direction. Games vary with a set number of ends to play, varied compositions of teams, and various determined formats. Bowls is played on a large smooth grass surface called a “green” divided up into lanes called rinks. Lawn bowls are large, hard resin balls with a bias to them, so that they travel along an elliptical path, rather than going straight. They range in sizes and weights and colors. Bowls involves offensive and defensive strategy. An added challenge is the Jack or target may be displaced within the confines of the rink by the movement of any bowl.
One of the best parts about the sport is that anyone can play no matter their skill level. It is a low impact game that is extremely accessible and great for any age. The game is played by youth and still competitively played by 90 year-olds!

Palm Park is another hidden gem of Lethbridge’s south side. Tucked snugly behind Palm Rd and 23rd ave south, it’s a neighbourhood treasure and the ideal spot for a new adventure. The great playground has climbing structures, disc swings and slides with a fun, “tropical” palm tree theme! Picnic tables and benches are also located around the playground, so bring a snack and stay the afternoon. The park also contains a large open field, perfect for a game of soccer or football with your buddies. Large, mature trees provide ample shade for those looking to relax with a good book or set up a picnic. Paved pathways intersects the park making it a scenic detour for exercise enthusiasts or a short cut for those making their way through the neighbourhood.
