Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada
Welcome to the July 2019 Recreation & Culture Guide A Message from Mayor Chris Spearman Summer has arrived and it’s time to get out and enjoy all the fun things there are to see and do in our beautiful city. The grand opening of the ATB Leisure Centre, home of the Cor Van Raay YMCA took place on June 14th. This state of the art facility is now officially open and citizens are making a huge splash! Mr. Van Raay mentioned that when he saw the rows of people working out in the fitness centre, his first thought was “this is the best investment I’ve ever made!” The vision of an active community that plays together continues to grow, thanks to the generosity of ATB Financial and Mr. Van Raay. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts and down to our gym shoes for their investment in our community. On July 1st, celebrate our great nation at Henderson Lake Park or Galt Gardens for a full day of Canada Day ceremonies and activities, culminating with a spectacular fireworks display over Henderson Lake after the sun goes down. If you haven’t yet, now is the time to visit Legacy Regional Park in north Lethbridge. This 73 acre park offers a multitude of amenities including a skate park, water features, outdoor fitness equipment, tennis and pickleball courts, an amphitheatre and a ninja-style obstacle course! You’ll also want to bring the family out to cheer on the Lethbridge Bulls at the Spitz Stadium. Recent upgrades make this facility more accessible and enhance the spectator experience. Let’s go Lethbridge Bulls! Henderson Pool is a fun destination for cooling off. Farmer’s Markets, Street Machine Weekend, Heritage Day and of course Whoop-up Days are other highlights that round out an impressive schedule of summer events in July and August. handy to stay on top of all the festivities and events scheduled in the coming months at the Galt Museum & Archives, Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, Fort Whoop-Up, Helen Schuler Nature Centre, CASA and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery.
All the best in the coming year, Lethbridge! Chris Spearman, Mayor City of Lethbridge

Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. Peace Celebrations, First World War Peace Day, to commemorate the end of the First World War, was held on July 19, 1919, across Canada as a celebration for returned soldiers, their families and the community.
The Peace Parade was open to all returned men as well as veterans of other war and soldiers from allied militaries. It also involved “all ladies, business, fraternal, labor & all other organizations, also all citizens” who wanted to take part in the parade. There were an incredible number of floats.
The Boy Scouts had a float shaped in the form of an airplane with a Union Jack draped across it. Scouts from north Lethbridge had a decorated car with a tiny British bulldog and young sailor boys. Their car was drawn by four horses “festooned in decorations.” A float for the Next-of-Kin had a sign on it that said “justice to the widows and orphans” and had a display of a mourning war widow and orphans. Lethbridge Iron Works’ float was made to look like an iron gunboat. The Sons of England and Kentish Association also had a float that looked like a boat, though theirs was designed to be the H.M.S. Kent. Following the parade, there were sports held at the exhibition and a Blackfoot dance.

THERESA’S DECISION TO TAKE ACTION... “When I first moved to my new community, I heard about the United Way-supported organization where I now work. It’s dedicated to strengthening Indigenous youth and families. Seeing firsthand the work that it does, I feel connected. When someone gives, we give back, in small ways and big ways.” –Theresa, donor & volunteer
CHANGED ROSE’S LIFE
“During high school, my family struggled with poverty. Eventually we became homeless. I felt so much stress and anxiety, my hair began to fall out. I started attending a United Wayfunded tutoring and mentoring program, and the support I had there made such a difference. Now, I’m going to school and working full time.”

BE FIT FOR LIFE Ice Cream & BBQ Season How you and your family can stay healthy during the outdoor activity season! Weddings, birthday parties, park days, lake days, camping, road trips, you name it, the list goes on! The summer is a fun time to get together with friends and family. We often base our social activities around food and it is our challenge to you to keep our nutritional choices in mind during events. Our recommendations for the family keeping your nutrition regime during the summer months include: Prep - Prepare your healthy snack options and make it easy to access - 1. Cut up grab and go veggies for the week to have as an option in the fridge vs. a quick option from the pantry. 2. Blend berries with Greek yogurt before freezing for 1-2 hours to curb your ice cold treat cravings. Plan Ahead - Involve the entire family and choose healthy options everyone can enjoy Fill up on the good stuff - Before attending an outdoor BBQ or party, enjoy a fresh summer salad and get your vegetables in first. Pack - Get the kids prepping and packing their healthy road and picnic snacks alongside you, it may take longer but it empowers them to make healthy choices, learn about food preparation and food skills to enjoy a wider variety of foods.

If so, this group could be a great fit for your child! Occupational Therapist, Jessica MacLean, and Registered Provisional Psychologist, Bethany Mills, are excited to offer a group on self-regulation (i.e., our ability to stay calm and attentive). Through fun, hands-on, interactive activities participants will learn about different factors that impact their regulation (e.g., environment, thoughts, emotions and sensory input) as well as concrete tools to maintain that ‘just right state.’ We will use obstacle courses, music, art, and discovery games to help teach regulation strategies in a way that is exciting and engaging! Handouts will be sent home after each session so caregivers can help support further practice and development of skills covered in group sessions. The outcome of this group will be to increase participants’ ability to understand and regulate their every day experiences. This group is intended for youth who experience challenges in maintaining an optimal state of regulation throughout their day. This group may be covered by your Insurance or Extended Health Plan.

Public Art Unveiling: “Migratory Gift” by Marc Dulude
July 1st 1:00pm
Henderson Park - West of parking lot near Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens (between Mayor Magrath Drive & the parking lot)
The twinning of Saint-Laurent, Québec, and Lethbridge, Alberta dates back to 1967 when Canada’s twin city program was created as part of the 100th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation. Saint-Laurent and Lethbridge are the only cities in Canada still actively pursuing their twinning. A public art exchange was initiated in 2016 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the twinning of Saint-Laurent and Lethbridge. On July 1, 2019 at 1pm, “Migratory Gift” by Marc Dulude – the piece of public art gifted to Lethbridge by Saint-Laurent – will be officially unveiled. In attendance will be representatives from both the City of Lethbridge and the Borough of Saint-Laurent.

Why Hydrating Is Important With the arrival of summer it’s important to think about hydration, even if you don’t consider yourself an athlete in training. Going for a walk in the coulees? Headed to the beach? Playing in the backyard? Remember to stay hydrated.
“Athletes rarely consume enough fluid to maximize the absorption capacity of the digestive system or to balance fluid losses. Hydration offers many benefits and is pivotal to maximizing one’s performance, either while training or in a competition The amount of fluid an individual can tolerate during exercise varies from one person to another, but usually ranges between 10 and 15 mL per kg of body weight per hour. Rather than drinking large amounts of fluid at one time, it is better to drink every 15 to 20 minutes.
Did You Know?
Whether your athlete is training outdoors or indoors, in hot or cold weather conditions, hydrating is important for their overall health and performance.” – coach.ca
