Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada

Welcome to the July 2017 Recreation & Culture Guide Thank goodness the days get longer in the summer. It gives us a chance to pack in all the fun things there are to see and do in our beautiful city. This summer promises to be particularly exciting with many Canada 150 events planned to celebrate our great nation. On July 1st, make your way to Henderson Lake Park or Galt Gardens for a full day of Canada Day activities, culminating with a spectacular fireworks display over the lake after the sun goes down. Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden celebrates its 50th anniversary on July 14th this year. The Garden opened in 1967 during Canada’s centennial year, so it is fitting that it will become the centrepiece of our Canada 150 festivities. The City of Lethbridge is also proud to present Community Culture Craze, on July 15th in Galt Gardens, commemorating our 50-year twin-city relationship with Saint-Laurent, Quebec and celebrating cultural diversity in our city. It’s free family fun for all ages! Henderson Pool continues to be where residents and visitors choose to make a splash. I can’t think of a better way to make the most of a hot summer day than by enjoying our amazing new water park. Jump in and join in the fun. The 25th anniversary edition of the Lethbridge International Airshow takes place July 14 – 16th. All eyes will take to the skies to watch the RCAF Snowbirds and F-18 Demonstration Team along with many other thrilling aerial performers. Street Machine Weekend, Heritage Day, Farmer’s Markets and of course Whoop-up Days are other highlights that round out an impressive schedule of summer events in July and August. close by to stay on top of all the happenings scheduled for Lethbridge in the coming months.

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - LOST & FOUND Are you missing something and think you left it at the Pool? There is a Lost & Found at each facility and below is a list of guidelines for our Lost & Found process. 1) Personal items such as combs, socks, underwear etc are discarded 2) Non valuable items are held for 4 weeks (wet items are hung to dry first) - towels, suits, toys, goggles, costume jewelry etc 3) After 4 weeks the items are donated to charity 4) Valuable items (watches, rings, necklaces, wallets, glasses etc) - are logged and secured at the facility - if there is identification every effort will be made to contact the owner - you will be asked to identify the object and to provide identification in order to claim lost valuables - at the end of each month all unclaimed items are turned over to the Lethbridge Regional Police Service If you are missing something check out the Lost & Found

Centennial Projects of 1967 Can you believe Canada’s 150th year is half over?

It would be impossible to outline everything that happened in 1967 but a few of the main highlights: We hope people have been taking a great many photographs of the events and activities that have been occurring this year and recording everything that has happened. For one thing that becomes obvious when we look back 50 years to the Centennial of 1967, is that the many photographs provide a great deal of information of everything that happened in Lethbridge and across southern Alberta that year.

SUMMER CAMPS

Epic Art Film Camp (Ages 10 to 14)

Art in Motion (Ages 6 to 9)

July 24 to 28 9 AM to 4:30 PM $220 per week | $180 for members

July 17 to 21 9 AM to 4:30 PM $220 per week | $180 for members

Epic Art Film Camp is an opportunity for youth to build filmmaking fundamentals using current technology. In this camp, filmmakers experience every step of the process from start to finish. Students develop a concept, write a script, create sets and costumes, perform, and shoot a film. They also learn how to edit and add basic visual effects. This filmmaking experience is student-driven, developing skills that youth can apply to other projects.

Art in Motion explores the influences of contemporary art. Using a wide array of media, campers will explore many forms of 2D and 3D art-making techniques while developing a strong understanding of concept and inspiration in contemporary art today. SAAG’s downtown park setting provides a perfect opportunity to get outside and visit other cultural institutions in Lethbridge. The week will culminate in an art show hosted by the class for family and SAAG visitors.

Tender Fingers Camp (Ages 3 to 5)

July 3 to 7 | July 10 to 14 | August 21 to 25 Morning session: 9 to 11:30 AM Afternoon session: 1 to 3:30 PM $200 per week | $160 for members

Tender Fingers is a weeklong summer camp that introduces art skills and creative thinking. Children are innately creative, expressive, and imaginative. Under the direction of our Public Engagement Coordinator, artists experiment with many different media to explore painting, drawing, and sculpting. Our programs include a snack, story time, as well as some fresh air playtime in Galt Gardens. The week culminates in an art show hosted by the class for family and friends.

Coulees & Culture (Ages 6 to 10) July 24 to 28 | August 14 to 18 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM $150 per week Register your young ones in the popular Coulees & Culture camp this summer! Campers have the opportunity to learn, play and grow as they spend a day with these participating institutions: Galt Museum & Archives, Helen Schuler Nature Centre, New West Theatre, Fort Whoop-Up, and Southern Alberta Art Gallery. Campers will participate in activities inspired by theatre, art, nature, local history and everything in between as they are introduced to Lethbridge’s varied cultural resources.

The Canada 150 for 150 Volunteer Challenge celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary and brings Canadians of diverse backgrounds and demographics together in a noble, generous and uniquely Canadian way. The Canada 150 for 150 Volunteer Challenge is a nation-wide initiative lead by Volunteer Ottawa in partnership with Volunteer Centres across the country. Its goal is to have Canadians give 150 hours of volunteer time in 2017 in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary. The challenge will serve as a legacy initiative that will give individuals a taste of the rewards of volunteering that will extend well beyond 2017. Prickly Pear Cactus / Otahkoottsis Did you know?

Many residents and visitors of Alberta are surprised to learn that cactus grows readily in many places throughout Alberta. The prickly pear cactus is the northernmost native cactus in Canada, one of just a handful of cactus varieties found in Alberta.

Did You Know?

Lethbridge’s climate and soil conditions are prime for the Prickly Pear Cactus and a quick walk through the coulees at this time of year will confirm it! Keep your eyes out on South-facing coulee slopes and look for the bright yellow flowers at this time of year. Be mindful of the cacti as you crouch to enjoy the many wildflower blooms or if you plan to sit on the coulee slopes while taking a break from your walk

44

Opuntia polyacantha Haw.

Grows on dry ridges and exposed south-facing slopes that have gravelly soil.

Has up to a dozen waxy yellow flowers that are 5-7 cm across in bloom between May and July.

The stem is shaped like a flat beaver-tail.

Traditionally Blackfoot elders have used the needles of the Prickly Pear to help ease rheumatism by poking into the areas affected.

The Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society Join us to learn more about your natural world!

We are now in Field Trip Prickly pear cacti are edible (after removing the spines and inner seeds) Season! Get outside with us on an upcoming and is said to taste bland. The cacti will produce fruit which are a excursion. Check out favourite for many who know when to look. The fruit is about 2.5cm long and can be yellow, orange, or red. our website for a complete listing of Source: http://galileo.org/kainai/prickly-pear-cactus/ AND upcoming adventures at Common Coulee Plants of Southern Alberta (Bain, Flanagan, Kuijt) 2014
