ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Pool Foulings What is Contamination and why is the pool closed?
Contamination can be blood, feces or vomit. The CHR has regulations regarding these foulings that we follow in order to keep our clients as safe as possible from illness. Patrons are asked to leave the contaminated body of water and to shower before entering another body of water so that it is not contaminated as well. The length of time a pool is closed depends on a variety of factors but can be from 30min to 12hrs.
Who is Fouling?
One would think it is babies who contaminate the pool the most. But, the fact is, those more likely to contaminate are patrons with incontinence and toddlers who are assumed potty trained. In this stimulating environment children are prone to be excited and less willing to leave the fun in order to use the washroom.
The Cost of Contamination?
More than just lost Fun! Inconvenience to other patrons. Cancellation of lessons. Loss of revenue. Chemical costs. Loss of income for staff.
How you can help to avoid Contamination?
Babies and toddlers must be in a "swimmer" diaper. "Swimmer" diapers are available at reception. Regular disposable diapers are not permitted in the pool as these diapers soak up water and will explode in the water which also causes a closure of the pool. Eat a few hours before your swim or plan to eat afterwards. Go to the washroom before your swim and take frequent washroom breaks.

Scenic Drive
16
It’s the 1960s and a new road is being developed along the coulee edge. Several names are proposed: Chinook Scenic Drive College Drive Conybeare Drive Coulee Ridge Drive Green Acres Drive Mountain View Drive Sheran Drive Southwest Bypass Road West Coulee Road But the name most desired by residents of the time was Scenic Drive and so it became. Scenic Drive, with both the north and south components, took years to develop. But the southern part was completed by 1966 making this year the 50th anniversary of the road. Once the road was constructed, businesses recognized the value of setting up along Scenic. The 24 June 1966 Lethbridge Herald noted that “Bill Morgan of Lethbridge has the distinction of the first Lethbridge businessman to open a new enterprise on Scenic Drive.” The first business? The A&W that was constructed at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Scenic Drive. This was the 2nd A&W built in Lethbridge with the first located
at Mayor Magrath Drive and 5 Avenue South. Many young Lethbridgians of the time remember driving back and forth between the two locations or “doing the dub”.
Third Avenue South was also Highway 3 and the route drivers used to go through Lethbridge. The picture shows the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Scenic Drive South in 1967. At this corner, drivers continuing through the community turned north until 1st Avenue where they drove west and under the High Level Bridge. The white building is the Brewery. In 1967, several building addresses had to be changed because Scenic Drive South now existed.

Prairie Rattlesnake Did you know?
Rattlesnakes are master of camouflage. Make sure you remain alert and be aware of your surroundings when hiking in the coulees, especially when you are in the natural areas of southwestern Lethbridge. Stay on established trails. Keep your dog on a leash! Your first indication of a nearby rattlesnake may be the rasp of its rattle. This is the snake’s way of getting your attention to warn you of its presence. Be especially careful on windy days when you ability to hear the warning might be reduced. Rattlesnakes are not aggressive and given a choice will retreat rather than strike. However, if surprised, stepped on or cornered, they can strike up to a distance about half of their length. Sources: ”Living with Rattlesnakes in Lethbridge” brochure

With warm summer weather conditions you may find more snakes on your walks in the river valley. In the month of June it is common to find rattlesnakes further from their den sites basking in the sun and hunting small rodents and other prey.
Lethbridge is home to a very small population of prairie rattlesnakes; Olive green, yellow and brown tones with a well-defined arrow -shaped head; Females reach breeding maturity between 4 and 7 years if age; It is estimated 20% of rattlesnake bites are dry (no venom is injected); Prairie rattlesnake venom is not particularly lethal—no one has died from a prairie rattlesnake bite in Lethbridge; It is illegal to kill rattlesnakes, possess rattlesnakes or their parts, or damage denning areas; Adult prairie rattlesnakes are shorter and chunkier than bullsnakes; If you require a rattlesnake to be removed from an urban or recreation area in Lethbridge call 403-332-6806

Connecting Physical Literacy and Nature
One easy way to do this is to simply spend more time outdoors! Exploring nature’s playground is a great way to help children develop physical literacy. There are plenty of things to climb, balance on, hop over and lots of open space to run and get the heart pumping. Spending time in nature is also good for the whole family. The benefits of outdoor activity are seemingly endless, including stress reduction, lower blood pressure, better grades in school and even better eyesight. While research clearly indicates spending time in nature is essential for good health, lots of people are spending more time indoors than ever before. Research has estimated we spend 90 per cent of each day indoors. That's why we are challenging you and the entire family to “unplug and get outside this month, regardless of the weather! Want to learn more about the benefits of connecting to nature? Visit learn.lc/CanadianParksReport to check out an interesting report from the Canadian Parks Council, which explores how Canadians interact with nature and its effect on our health and wellbeing.
For more information call 403-382-6919 or go to lethbridgecollege.ca/befitforlife
Community Did You Know? & Family Support Services
When we talk about physical literacy in children, we are not just talking about the physical act of learning how to move. We also need to consider what motivates them to move, and how we can develop a love for movement in children that will encourage them to maintain an active lifestyle as they grow older.
