ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Family Change Room Guidelines We sometimes get comments about patrons using change rooms of the opposite sex. Generally this involves younger children and sometimes special needs patrons. The fact that Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran, Stan Siwik and Henderson Pools were built many years ago at time when accessibility was not as big a consideration is the major factor creating this issue. Some family change rooms have been added to both Nicholas Sheran, Stan Siwik and most recently Henderson Pool that have helped to alleviate the problem however the cost to provide unrestricted access may be expensive and some would say the money would be better spent on a new facility. The general guideline that we use is that we ask patrons with children in the age range of 6 years & up to use the proper public change room or the Family change rooms (if the parent is incomfortable with them changing alone). If someone does use opposite sex change rooms with a child that is “older” we will suggest alternatives as our goal is not to be confrontational but rather to find a solution that works for everyone which most times is easier said than done. The best is to try to work with each other to make it as comfortable as possible for everyone. Some suggestions include but are not limited to: 1) Only use the Family Change rooms if you need to - this will keep them open for those that do need to use them 2) Use change stalls with the curtains if available in the public change rooms 3) Ask the staff for other alternatives for pools like Fritz that don’t have Family Change rooms 4) Be tolerant of other peoples feelings 5) Be tolerant of the staff - likely they are asking because another patron has raised their concern and they are caught in the middle of a difficult situation dealing with patrons that are likely older than them.

Great War Veterans Association, 100 Years Strong The Great War Veterans Association (GWVA) formed in Lethbridge in February 1917 and received their charter the following April. The purpose was to serve veterans returning from the Great War and their families. With a different name, it continues to do that and more today. In June 1917, the club had arranged to rent the Federal Building (also known as Federal Courthouse and Dominion Lands Building) at the corner of 1 Avenue and 9 Street South. In 1919 when the Prince of Wales came to Lethbridge, he accepted the invitation of the GWVA to attend their smoker in the Veterans’ Club. The building was later sold to the group for a minimal amount. Initially there were only thirteen members but by 1918 there were eighty members and many more were applying to join. The organization first met in the offices of the Board of Trade. But a larger and more permanent space became necessary.

In the 1920s the GWVA and other veterans groups combined to form the Legion and the GWVA hall became Lethbridge’s Legion. With additions and changes, the building served until 1977 when it was replaced by the new Legion on Mayor Magrath Drive South. The old Legion was demolished in 1978.

SUMMER CAMPS

Epic Art Film Camp (Ages 10 to 14)

Art in Motion (Ages 6 to 9)

July 24 to 28 9 AM to 4:30 PM $220 per week | $180 for members

July 17 to 21 9 AM to 4:30 PM $220 per week | $180 for members

Epic Art Film Camp is an opportunity for youth to build filmmaking fundamentals using current technology. In this camp, filmmakers experience every step of the process from start to finish. Students develop a concept, write a script, create sets and costumes, perform, and shoot a film. They also learn how to edit and add basic visual effects. This filmmaking experience is student-driven, developing skills that youth can apply to other projects.

Art in Motion explores the influences of contemporary art. Using a wide array of media, campers will explore many forms of 2D and 3D art-making techniques while developing a strong understanding of concept and inspiration in contemporary art today. SAAG’s downtown park setting provides a perfect opportunity to get outside and visit other cultural institutions in Lethbridge. The week will culminate in an art show hosted by the class for family and SAAG visitors.

July 3 to 7 | July 10 to 14 | August 21 to 25 Morning session: 9 to 11:30 AM Afternoon session: 1 to 3:30 PM $200 per week | $160 for members Tender Fingers is a weeklong summer camp that introduces art skills and creative thinking. Children are innately creative, expressive, and imaginative. Under the direction of our Public Engagement Coordinator, artists experiment with many different media to explore painting, drawing, and sculpting. Our programs include a snack, story time, as well as some fresh air playtime in Galt Gardens. The week culminates in an art show hosted by the class for family and friends.

Coulees & Culture (Ages 6 to 10) July 24 to 28 | August 14 to 18 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM $150 per week Register your young ones in the popular Coulees & Culture camp this summer! Campers have the opportunity to learn, play and grow as they spend a day with these participating institutions: Galt Museum & Archives, Helen Schuler Nature Centre, New West Theatre, Fort Whoop-Up, and Southern Alberta Art Gallery. Campers will participate in activities inspired by theatre, art, nature, local history and everything in between as they are introduced to Lethbridge’s varied cultural resources.

The Jeanne Sauve Picnic Area is open to all and has many picnic tables and firepits for a casual picnic with friends and family. The natural playground theme allows for imaginative play and features a slide, swings, and climbing apparatus. Horseshoe pits and a public washroom are also available at this site. Pavan Park also provides access to the Oldman River and many people use the park as a site for fishing or as a 'take-out' from upstream float trips.
