Waterton Park’s Beginning 125 Years Ago This is not the history of Waterton as a place. That story is several millennia old and would take more space than this small article. This is the story of Waterton Lakes National Park and how it became a park, with its boundary and name changing over the years. On 30 May 1895, through an Order in Council, 140 square kilometres were set aside to be protected by the federal government as a Dominion Forest Park. It was known as Kootenay Lakes Forestry Park. This started the process of the site towards National Park status.

In 1932, Waterton Lakes National Park and the United States Glacier Park formed the first international Peace Park in the world. In 1995, Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So happy 125th to Waterton, Canada’s 4th National Park.

In 1911, Kootenay Lakes Forest Reserve is redeveloped as Waterton Lakes National Park. John George Kootenai Brown became the first superintendent of the park.

UNITED WAY HELPED JAYCE’S KIDS DEVELOP CONFIDENCE IN THEIR READING SKILLS... “When I learned that my daughter, Nadine, was reading at a pre-K level in grade 2, it felt like a punch to the gut. I’m a single mother of four kids and had just entered university. I was so busy, I didn’t realize she was floating under the radar. Once I knew, though, my focus became enhancing all my kids’ learning abilities. At first, I thought a literacy camp would just give Nadine extra practice, but right away, she showed so much improvement. She came home every day with stories about reading books with the volunteers, and I thought, ‘I want my daughter to have this much excitement reading with her mom.’ Within the first week, I was getting pamphlets on how to make reading fun and engaging for parents, too. I was glad to get them—they’ll help me in the future with my two younger children.”

Make the Stick Jump – A Traditional Game

Source: www.activeforlife.com

Who doesn’t love the idea of making sticks jump? Five sticks approximately eight inches in height are stuck into the ground at different distances from a line. Each stick has between one and five lines painted or drawn on it. The closest stick will have the smallest number and the farthest stick the highest. One at a time, kids stand behind the line and take turns throwing rocks, bean bags, or hacky sacks at the sticks. If an object hits a stick directly, it will make the stick “jump” and points are awarded for that stick.

Looking for more? Visit the article ‘Five Indigenous games to play with your children” to see more on this and other games, including ‘One Foot High Kick, Snow Snake, Lacrosse, and Siturtaq/Monkey Dance’ https://activeforlife.com/five-indigenous-games-to-play-with-your-children/

Target Hunger is the annual food drive done every year on the second Saturday in June, when volunteers pick up donations from each household in town, requesting community members to donate the most wanted food items for our local food banks. COVID-19 UPDATE: At this time, Target Hunger is considered a safe-fundraising event and will recruit food as an essential service. In light of the current situation, Target Hunger 2020 still plans to move forward, and we appreciate the ongoing community support. We will continue to keep volunteers informed and updated with health and safety measures relating to Covid-19, and will comply with all health measures and social distancing recommended by Alberta Health Services to ensure a safe event for all participants. NEW THIS YEAR: We are phasing out of the yellow bags to reduce single-plastic use! Volunteers are now only required to PICK-UP donations from their route! We do have a limited supply of bags available for volunteers interested in dropping off bags prior to the pickup date, those interested should connect with Target Hunger Coordinators. As this is a city wide event, we are looking for volunteers to help us collect food donations throughout the city! Each volunteer will be assigned a route somewhere in Lethbridge and as this route may have up to 150 houses, someone in your volunteer party must have access to a vehicle. You can also sign up to help sort food at the food banks on event day!

Sign Up Online: Volunteer to pick up donations on an assigned route, or to help sort food at one of the food banks on event day. Routes will be available on a firstcome-first serve basis, and online sign-up will be available May 1st at www.targethungerlethbridge.com Email: targethunger.volunteer@gmail.com to connect with our Target Hunger Coordinators, or connect with either food bank: Lethbridge Food Bank (403) 320-1879, or Interfaith Food Bank (403) 320-8779

This year our goal is to raise 100,000 pounds of food! The more groups we have to help out, the more food we can gather for our local food banks. If you want a chance to make a difference in your community, this is it!

We are an emerging coalition of volunteers from various faith practices in our community, promoting peaceful coexistence. We affirm The Charter for Compassion (www.CharterforCompassion.org) The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect. It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others-even our enemies-is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion. We therefore call upon all men and women to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion; 

to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate

to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures

to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity

to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings - even those regarded as enemies.

We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensable to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.
