Changes coming to Water Safety Courses

Aquatics

The Red Cross has decided to turn down their involvement in water safety throughout 2022. By January 2023 there will no longer be Red Cross Water Safety Instructor courses or lessons. Standard First Aid will continue. The Lifesaving Society is taking over that responsibility. We are working with them to program our new Swim for Life Instructor courses and lessons. We're excited for this new chapter and look forward to working with everyone!

International

Air

Mail

On 21 June 1922, bearing 800 letters, the first international air mail flight from Canada to the United States took off from Lethbridge. The flight ended abruptly in Minot, North Dakota. The pilot was Captain J.E. “Jock” Palmer. Early in 1920, Palmer and his flying partner, Harry Fitzsimmons, decided to organize air mail service across Canada. Once permission was given, hundreds of special air mail envelopes were printed and sold for $1 each to help finance the flight. The partners repainted their airplane and at 3:12 pm, the government licensed GCABX, took off from Lethbridge.

Flight

of

A stop-over for repairs was made. When repairs were completed on June 26, Palmer intended to take the plane up for one last test flight. As he was coming in for a landing, he noted a large car with several passengers directly in his path. Palmer deliberately crashed the plane, wrecking it completely, but missed the car. He escaped with minor injuries, but the hopes of Palmer and Fitzsimmons to deliver air mail to Ottawa ended on that North Dakota air field. The air mail letters were reposted in Minot and continued their journey by land. The plane was sent back to Lethbridge by train.

The flight into Saskatchewan and across the American border went off without a hitch. A dust storm then grounded them for a day and they arrived in Minot, North Dakota on June 24. While landing in North Dakota, the plane hit a wire fence and damaged its wing.

Nesting Season is Here

Did You Know?

Photos by C. Burstlein

The American Robin (Turdus migratorius) female chooses the nest site and builds the nest. An average of 180 trips a day, with mud or grass is necessary to finish the nest in two to six days. In southern Canada, the first clutch, or set of eggs, is laid in late April or early May.

Did You Know?

Why are American Robin’s eggs blue? The blue colour is due to biliverdin, a pigment deposited on the eggshell.

36

Higher biliverdin levels indicate a healthier female and brighter blue eggs. Eggs laid by a healthier female seemed to encourage males to take more interest in their young. Nestlings fledge their nest at approximately 13 days old.

The American Robin has an extendible esophagus. This can be useful in winter, when the bird may store fruits in the esophagus before it settles for the night. This probably allows the robin to survive low nighttime temperatures.

Inspired by his son Zane who quickly switched interest from hockey to lacrosse once introduced to it, Chad set out to make a difference in his community. “I took notice in the skill, stick handling, physical play and of course the team work. As time went on I learned that it is more than a game. Created by the Indigenous people in eastern Canada and USA, the Creator’s game had a purpose and it is to heal and to give thanks to the Creator. Which is important to me on a daily basis. Giving thanks to our creator and helping others. Now I can do both through the game of lacrosse.”-Coach Chad. Ravens Lacrosse Association nominated Chad Chief Moon for the Indigenous Philanthropist Award 2021 for the positive impact he's had on the indigenous community through coaching and recruiting.

Lethbridge Pride Fest Lethbridge Pride Fest Society has a proud history of celebrating & promoting equality for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Two-Spirit, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, & Asexual community. The first Lethbridge Pride Festival was held in 2007 & consisted of a bbq on the outskirts of Lethbridge & a dance roughly 20 minutes outside of city limits. Lethbridge’s first pride was organized by a handful of individuals who had a dream that Lethbridge Pride Fest would grow & rival major centre’s like Edmonton or Calgary. Our recent Pride Festival saw over 8,000 people attend the various events ranging from a parade, two different dances, family activities, drag shows, author readings & more!
