ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Can You Change the Hours of Operation Hours of Operation Recreation Excellence is very pleased to work with the City of Lethbridge in the delivery of aquatic services within the community of Lethbridge. On occasion our staff get asked if the facilities hours of operation could be adjusted. In particular, we do get asked if the facilities could open earlier on some days. While we are not opposed to adjusting operational schedules it should be noted that the City of Lethbridge and Recreation Excellence research facility use and the schedules that exist within the Aquatic Centres in Lethbridge have been developed in an effort to best reflect the needs of the community.

Aquatics

It is our mandate to operate the Aquatic Facilities in a way that provides as much flexibility as possible while remaining fiscally responsible to the City of Lethbridge and the tax payers of the community. This does not mean that the hours of operation cannot be reviewed from time to time - in fact they are reviewed regularly... and it does not mean that we do not want to hear suggestions regarding the programming and hours of operation because we do. Our goal is to serve well in all aspects of the operation of the facilities and to maintain fiscal responsibility to the community of Lethbridge in doing so.

Alberta Provincial Police From 1917 to 1932, three police forces operated in Lethbridge, all headquartered along 4 Avenue South. The Royal Northwest Mounted Police (which became RCMP in 1920) were located between 4 and 6 Avenues and 9 and 11 Street South.

in Alberta was responsible only for federal policing duties.

When the APP started, they had no uniforms, only a few horses and three cars – for the entire province. In the basement of City Hall, at the corner of 4 Avenue and 7 Street South, was the Lethbridge City Police. One block west, in the basement of the Court House, was the Alberta Provincial Police (APP). The APP was formed in March 1917. The RNWMP’s did not renew its provincial policing contract so the province was required to develop its own force for provincial responsibilities. From 1917 to 1932, the Mounted Police

By 1918, “D” Division, headquartered in Lethbridge and whose jurisdiction ranged from British Columbia to Saskatchewan and from Nanton south, was served by 37 personnel, 11 horses, 2 Ford cars and 7 private cars owned by constables. The APP operated throughout prohibition and into the early years of the Great Depression when the RCMP again took over provincial policing responsibilities in Alberta.

Students from the Lethbridge College Ecosystem Management program will present on the following topics at the next Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society meeting: 1. Harvest Rates of Waterfowl, by Derek Hallgrimson. This project looks to determine if there is a distinct vulnerability to hunting mortality in hatch year birds, vs. after hatch year birds. Data on species, sex, and age are used in the analysis. 2. The Effects of Shepherding on Mule Deer Populations in Waterton Lakes National Park, by Tara Evenson. Mule deer frequenting the Waterton Lakes town site have caused conflicts with people and pets, and may be luring predators into town. The practice of shepherding, disturbing animals’ sense of security so they avoid an area, has been used in Waterton and this project looks at whether this practice is an effective control tool. 3. Estimating the Weight of Red Kale using Chlorophyll A & B, by Danielle Crawford. The current process to determine plant productivity is laborious, and results in destruction of samples. This study looks to use chlorophyll meters to develop a quick, nondestructive technique of plant productivity estimation.

Mountain Bluebirds (pictured) are known for their short-to-medium distance migrations. From as far north as Alaska to as far south as central Mexico! Migrating flocks consist of 20-200 birds Keep an eye out for these (& many more) birds in March: Yellow-headed blackbirds Killdeer American Coot Snow Geese Grebes

Sign up your daughter for our FREE Go Girl event! Physical inactivity represents a significant health burden in Canada. Two-thirds of children in Canada are not active enough to benefit their health and teen girls aged 10-14 are at particularly high risk. They are generally less active than males in the same age group. To encourage healthy lifestyle choices, including active living, healthy eating and tobacco, alcohol and drug prevention, the Lethbridge College Be Fit for Life Centre is hosting a free one-day "Go Girl" event for girls aged 8-12 on Saturday March 25, 2017. This event will be hosted at Lethbridge College and is funded through the inMotion Network. The goal of this free event is to encourage and support teen girls in choosing an active, healthy lifestyle. "Go Girl" is a one-day experience in which teen girls are invited to see-and-try a variety of physical activities and participate in sessions on alcohol and drug prevention, nutrition, body image and wellness issues. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a free light healthy lunch will be provided.

For more information call 403-382-6919 or go to lethbridgecollege.ca/befitforlife

To celebrate Canada’s 150th, we invite you to CHEER ON!

What is CHEER ON?

In 2017, we are encouraging everyone to get out in our community and cheer on local athletes and teams at sport events you might not normally attend. We know it can be a challenge to find out where and when sport is happening and how you can watch it. Sport organizations are encouraged to post their games, tournaments, special events, competitions, meets and matches on our Sport Calendar. Help us support athletes, sports clubs and leagues to make their events exciting and memorable. Bums in bleachers, chatter online and pride in local sport makes a community stronger!
