75 th Anniversary of VE Day VE Day – or Victory in Europe Day – was a day to celebrate the formal acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender on May 8, 1945. As part of the celebration, Mayor Shackelford spoke on behalf of the city. His message was shared in the Lethbridge Herald: “Fellow citizens: For nearly six long, trying years this is the day we have prayed for, worked for, and for which men have died. I need not tell you how we have worked together in Lethbridge during these war years. We knew that our liberty was being bought by unselfishness and it put a brake on our own self-interests. Let us prepare to celebrate this day in the same unselfish spirit. We must remember we have a community of interests and we celebrate together….

for fun. Our children will long remember this day. We must make it memorable with clean fun. This day will live in their memories for years just as that other Armistice has done in ours. We cannot afford to have it marred…. With all the authority you have vested in me as mayor, I charge you to make this a day which we shall always count worthy of Lethbridge.” (7 May 1945, Lethbridge Herald)

All of us will want to express our gratitude to the men who died for us, to the men who fought and lived and will fight on. That expression of gratitude ought to have a real priority. Our community is to parade. Let us come out and honor that parade as it reminds us of the men who have marched for us. This is a time for seriousness. It is also a time for rejoicing. There is a place in it

UNITED WAY HELPED JAYCE’S KIDS DEVELOP CONFIDENCE IN THEIR READING SKILLS... “When I learned that my daughter, Nadine, was reading at a pre-K level in grade 2, it felt like a punch to the gut. I’m a single mother of four kids and had just entered university. I was so busy, I didn’t realize she was floating under the radar. Once I knew, though, my focus became enhancing all my kids’ learning abilities. At first, I thought a literacy camp would just give Nadine extra practice, but right away, she showed so much improvement. She came home every day with stories about reading books with the volunteers, and I thought, ‘I want my daughter to have this much excitement reading with her mom.’ Within the first week, I was getting pamphlets on how to make reading fun and engaging for parents, too. I was glad to get them—they’ll help me in the future with my two younger children.”

NORTHERN HARRIER HAWK

AapiipĂssoohsiiksi

Circus hudsonius

Photos by: Kiann Bohnert

Did You Know? This low gliding hawk with thin boomerang shaped wings and wide, very distinct tail band has arrived back in Lethbridge, from southern wintering grounds. The Northern Harrier, formerly called Marsh Hawk, is commonly found in wetlands and open fields, similar to Hen Hawk cousin in UK. West Lethbridge sighting (above), 04/14/20. Looking to attract and impress a mate, the male (above) soars high into the sky, and like a roller coaster goes into repeated high speed aerial dives! It is quite a sight when a female replies with an aerial dive of her own. See in our coulees and on YouTube.

City of Lethbridge

When incubating the eggs, she flies up from the nest and flips upside down to catch the meat her mate drops to her!

16

Looking somewhat different than the male, the female is brown on top with dark brown streaking on white breast and flanks. Both have owl like faces and acute hearing! www.NatureLethbridge.ca

Run & Scream – A Traditional Game Activity Origin and Purpose • This is a Blackfoot game • This activity was traditionally completed by taking turns, one at a time, teaching tolerance and patience • Lung capacity was and still is important in everyday life

Source: www.befitforlife.ca

Equipment • Blackfoot marking sticks – willow sticks (15 - 20 cm long) decorated with beads and feathers or substitute painted pictograph rocks for markers • Large open activity area with at least 100 m of running space in a gym or outside on a smooth surface • Jackknife or box cutter (with adult supervision) Equipment Creation • Gratitude for the gifts of the land is an important lesson that begins with the proper protocol being followed when harvesting natural materials. • The willow should be cut into 15 - 20 cm lengths per marking stick • Using a knife (with adult supervision), create a point on the stick so that it can be placed in the ground easily. The knife can also be used to create markings on the stick. • Tie feathers and beads on the end of the stick to decorate (as shown in picture) Activity Description • Participants take in a big breath of air, start running, and at the same time scream out loud. • When they can no longer scream without taking a new breath, the spot where the scream stops is marked by their marking stick.

Safety • Be sure that the running area is free of debris • If the stick has a pointed end, ensure participants run with the point away from their body.

Activity Variations 1. Have participants try to beat their previous run length after a short rest 2. Use this activity as a benchmark and have participants brainstorm and participate in various sprinting activities that would improve their lung capacity in Run & Scream

City of Lethbridge

Fundamental Movement Skills/Physical Literacy Link • Running is a fundamental movement skill that is the basis for many other locomotor movements Running is a skill that is used in many sports and lifelong physical activities • Lung capacity is an important indicator of health
