ABOUT THE POOLS - NEW CHANGES COMING

This year our Recreation Excellence leadership team conducted a facility analysis of the schedules, programs, and services, including registration, attendance, and drop-ins.

The Stan Siwik Family Leisure Pool, Nicholas Sheran Family Leisure Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Henderson Outdoor Pool are community treasures that serve the people of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta.

Efficient facility schedules maximize opportunities that reflect the current usage and user trends. The facility attendance for public swimming has decreased significantly since the pandemic started and has not returned to pre-pandemic levels and the data also identified an imbalance of programming across City quadrants. The proposed changes were approved by the City of Lethbridge and will be effective January 2, 2023. The new schedule provides efficiencies for pool operations and staffing while providing an equal distribution of programming across the City of Lethbridge quadrants.

Key highlights of the new schedules include:

• 10 additional weekly aquafit classes, featuring a new class on Saturdays.

• A new Friday Youth swim from 2-5 pm.

• 2 new Adult Leisure swims on Fridays and Saturdays.

• 8 New Parent & Tot and Preschool Lessons on Friday mornings .

• Expanded Learn to Swim program with an additional 48 lesson spots for children.

• More Rental space opportunities for private bookings.

• Programs with lower attendance are shifting to new times or to another Recreation Excellence facility.

Why is the schedule changing?

The facility attendance for public swimming has decreased significantly since the pandemic started and has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. As an essential part of the fiscal mandate, we strive to achieve an efficient facility schedule that maximizes usage and creates fiscally responsible recreation facilities.

Why is my class time changed?

Your class may have been moved to another facility to maximize facility usage, pool space, staffing hours, and other operational needs. We certainly understand that changes to your regular class time can be difficult to comprehend, and with 10 new classes opening, we encourage you to try one of the other available offerings.

Will it ever go back?

We don’t know. Recreation Excellence will continue to monitor and analyze the usage of the facilities along with attendance and user trends. Future schedules may be adjusted to meet the needs of the greater community while ensuring fiscally responsible recreation facilities.

Irrigation Monum e nt and Here We Begin to Mine the Coal Monuments, 196 3

Sixty years ago, in 1963, two monuments were placed in Lethbridge that highlighted two resources that helped in Lethbridge’s development – irrigation and coal mining.

The Irrigation Monument is in front of Lethbridge City Hall and was presented to the City of Lethbridge to honour those responsible for bringing irrigation to southern Alberta.

Rollingson spent over 40 years in Lethbridge coal mines. Rosain was the last living man to have worked in Drift Mine No. 1, which closed in 1893.

The monument wass placed in front of the location of Drift Mine No. 1. This mine was opened in 1882 and was the first Galt mine in the district.

The creation and placement of this cairn was the result of the Lethbridge Historical society and the Lethbridge Miners’ Library working together under the guidance of George Watson.

That same year, the Here We Begin to Mine the Coal monument was placed in Indian Battle Park. At the dedication to the monument were many early miners including Mike and Matt Homulos, John A. Foster, George Rollingson and Charles Rosain.

Walking Tour to “The Thing”

Hidden in the middle of the Lethbridge river valley, accessible only by foot sits a very distinctive structure. It’s believed that a group of people collected debris from across the Oldman River Valley and composed it into a rugged building. Some of the unofficial names include, The Thing and The Rust Rock Cathedral. We will be walking to this structure together, discussing the history and lore of its creation.

Celebrate 10 Years of Casa

The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge is celebrating 10 years of Casa on May 13 and you are invited!

The Casa 10 Open House starts at 11:00am and has free activities for the whole family. Gallery and facility tours will happen at 11:00am, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, and 3:00pm. Cake will be served at Noon. Look for artist demonstrations in the Clay Studio, Woodshop, 2D Studio, and Textile Studio. Art documentaries will be screening throughout the day in the Community Room. Create chalk masterpieces on Rotary Square. Create an embossed print on the printing press. Face painting, art activities and buttonmaking will be taking place in the Atrium throughout the day.

Be sure to preregister for free mini-classes and get creative! Make a Clay Tiles, a Gelli-Print Monoprint, Fabric Flowers, Textile Journals, Crochet Scrunchies, Cyanotypes & Van Dyke Prints. The uLethbridge Conservatory of Music will be

o ering Group Fiddling & Group Drumming workshops. Movement mini-classes include Pop Up Yoga, an Accessible Dance Class with Beyond Limits Dance Collective, a Family Dance with Claire Lint, and a Basic Stage Fight Choreography class. Sign-up for one class or have art classes all day. In the evening join us for a Celebration Concert Under the Sails with Juno Award Winner Oscar Lopez. Lopez played the very rst concert at Casa in 2013. We are excited to have his infectious rhythms, guitar mastery, and improvisational wit back at Casa ten years later. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the Community Room but our wish is for a delightful outdoor concert beneath Casa’s brand new shade sails. This concert is sponsored by Tourism Lethbridge. Tickets are free and are available on Eventbrite. Be sure to reserve yours today! Visit the Casa and AAC websites and social media for full information about all the event activities.

Alberta’s Prairie Crocus

Did You Know?

In Spring the Prairie Crocus (Pulsatilla patens) is the first plant to show its beauty in Alberta’s prairies. These fuzzy purple flowers are also commonly known as Prairie Pasqueflower and Prairie Smoke. The perennial is not actually a crocus, but an anemone, belonging to the buttercup family.

One folktale connects the formation of the species with the west wind, Zephyr and a nymph, Anemone. Their love caused the angry goddess of flowers, Flora, to banish the nymph from her court. When the broken-hearted Anemone died, Zephyr convinced Venus to change her body into

Winter Hours: Open Daily 1:00pm – 4:00pm (Closed Mondays)

a flower that would bloom when spring began.

Prairie Crocus seeds are selfplanting, a rather common trick used by prairie plants. They also increase in their abundance after a fire.

The saucer shape of the Prairie Crocus’ petals and the shininess of its petals, create a reflection that causes energy to bounce between the stamens and pistils, warming the inside of the flower up to 10 degrees warmer than the temperature of its environment.

Be aware, the Prairie Crocus is poisonous when eaten, and if picked up, it can irritate the skin.

BE FIT FOR LIFE Spring Activties

Spring has Sprung and it's Time to get Outside!

With warm weather fast approaching getting outside is more inviting than ever. Spring brings sunshine, growth, and the days are longer. Being outside promotes better mood, boosts energy, and increases Vitamin D levels.

Get out and enjoy the sunshine, fresh air and warm temperatures by going on a spring time walk, bike, scooter or hike. Our city has great parks and pathways to explore for all levels of users.

Start planting your garden! Bring colour to your yard with flowers, and plant vegetables like cucumbers and tomatoes or fruits like strawberries or raspberries. They are resilent and easy to grow.

Plan a BBQ for your friends and family. Make it a potluck and have everyone bring something different from their culture/family. Incorpate music, dancing and games like horseshoes, hide and seek or Red Rover. Spending time with family/friends supports positive connections and mental health.

Most importantly, spending time outside is fun, inexpensive, and easy to do. There are so many options to incorpate movement, play, and learning. Explore the coulees behind Lethbridge College or the Univeristy, Helen Schuler Nature Centre, Legacy Park, Nicholas Sheran Park or others. Throw a ball or frisbee in the backyard, kick a soccer ball around or draw hopscotch on the sidewalk. Spring has sprung and it's time to get outside!

Stay Safe on Two Wheels

TOP TIPS FOR SAFE BIKING

Riding a bicycle, skateboarding, in-line skating, and riding a scooter are great ways to be active, get around, and stay fit. Here are some tips to help you stay safe:

Bike Safety

If you ride on the road, ride on the right side of the road so you're going in the same direction as traffic.

Look behind you (shoulder check) when you turn or move out to pass Learn and use hand signals.

Watch the road for hazards like debris, grates, or holes

Remember that poor weather can affect the road conditions and how well you can see and be seen

Watch for people walking, animals, and others on bicycles when you ride on shared places like bike paths or trails

Protective gear - Bike helmets protect people of all ages. It's the law in Alberta that anyone younger than 18 years must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.

Make sure your bike helmet has a CSA, Snell, or ASTM sticker

Take the Helmet YES Test to a to make sure your helmet fits properly It should be snug, level, and stable.

Replace your helmet every 5 years, or whenever recommended by the helmet manufacturer or, after you've been in a crash.

Set a good example for children by wearing your bike helmet

Let your child choose their own helmet, they'll be more likely to wear it.

Equipment check - A bicycle should be the right size for the person riding it. Adjust the seat to fit your height. Make sure your bicycle is working properly, and do an ABC quick check before every ride:

A is for air: Make sure the tires are firm.

B is for brakes, bar, and bell: Check that your brake levers work and the handlebars are the right height, and test your bell.

C is for chain: It should be tight and well lubed

Skateboards, in-line skating, and scooters are great ways for everyone to be active. Here's what to do before you start these activities:

Know your abilities; don't do anything too advanced without training or practice. Check for hazards in the area where you're riding or playing Wear a helmet to lower the risk of head injury. Falls happen so wear protective gear like wrist guards, elbow pads, and knee pads They lower the risk of injuries and make the activity more fun to learn and practice. If you're with children, supervise actively. Stay where you can see, hear, & reach them. Lead by example to show children how to be safe. Teach them to safety rules and make sure they follow them.

Come to SportFest to learn bicycle safety at the 'bike rodeo'. Practice the rules of the road riding a real bike on a course.

Help us Preserve the Coulees

Mountain Biking in the River Valley

Did you know?

Lethbridge has an impressive pathway and trail network with over 260km of paved and unpaved trails.

The environment in the River Valley is very fragile. Coulee slopes are extremely susceptible to long-term damage from erosion, soil compaction and the spread of invasive plants and weed species.

Activities such as building jumps causes erosion in the coulees.

What you can do:

Only ride bikes on the designated pathways to avoid long-term damage to the coulees.

2. Don't build jumps. Instead, head over to Botterill Bottom Park! This Mountain Bike Park (accessed through Indian Battle Park) features jumps, moguls and trick stunt areas. This fun park is open year-round and is free to use!

3. If you see someone building a jump, report it by calling 311.
