Lessons - Summer 2018 Registration

Registration for our Summer lesson set will begin May 1, 2018 for Nicholas Sheran Pool at 9am, and May 8, 2018 for Stan Siwik Pool at 9am. If you have any question please contact one of the pools.

Pool contamination reduction strategy

Each year pool contaminations are the leading cause of unscheduled pool closures which inconvenience users, increase potential health risks and increase maintenance costs. In an effort to reduce the number of unscheduled closures due to contaminations we will be implementing more stringent guidelines. Children that are not toilet trained & incontinent persons will now be required to wear an approved pool pant along with a plastic pant under their swim wear. Available at the pool.

Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS Preventing Pool Contaminations

What is Contamination and why is the pool closed?

Each year pool contaminations are the leading cause of unscheduled pool closures. Contamination can be feces, vomit or blood. AHS has regulations regarding these contaminations that we follow in order to keep our patrons as safe as possible from illness. The length of time a pool is closed depends on a variety of factors but can be from 30min to more than 12hrs.

What is the cost of a contamination?

The obvious cost is lost time for all users. In addition, there is an increase in potential health risks and maintenance costs along with lost revenue. On average the pools see 40+ contaminations each year which results in over a week’s worth of lost time in the pool.

What are the guidelines to reduce contaminations? - Children who are not completely toilet trained and incontinent individuals must wear an approved swim pant. and plastic pool pant. - Do not eat before or during your swim. Plan to eat after. - Go to the bathroom before your swim and take frequent bathroom breaks during the swim - Do Not come to the pool if you are sick or suffering from diarrhea. Please wait 2 weeks after symptoms subside before returning to the pool Respectfuly, we ask our users to help keep the pools open as much as possible by following these guidelines.

Katherine Stinson On Saturday, July 27, 1918, Katherine Stinson became the first woman and the second person to fly an airplane in Lethbridge. Like Eugene Ely in 1911, Stinson’s flight was part of the annual fair and stampede. She was hired for the event by the Lethbridge Exhibition. Stinson flew a 100-horsepower Curtiss biplane and performed from the centre of the racetrack in front of the exhibition grandstand.

On that Saturday, she performed two 9minute flights wowing southern Albertans with her stunts and flying prowess. Her flights were well attended and greatly pleased the crowd. While in Alberta, Stinson made the second air mail flight in Canadians history, flying mail between Calgary and Edmonton; she also set Canadian distance and endurance records.

What is physical literacy and where did it go? Although physical literacy has many definitions, we like to describe it as “the ability to move with confidence and competence in a wide variety of activities and environments.” For a young child, being physically literate is often just as important as reading and writing. So why aren’t our children playing and developing these skills as frequently anymore? There are many reasons, but a huge factor is screen time. Technology has taken a huge toll on unstructured free play in our children. Just under seven percent of Canadian youth achieve the recommended guideline of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day, at least six days a week. So how can we change this mentality and get our children moving and playing? First, we need to encourage them to get outside and play. Second, we should start joining in their play, especially if there are no other kids around for them to play with. And lastly, we shouldn't force them to play structured games. Let kids have fun playing traditional games, and encourage them to come up with their own twist on the rules. Need ideas? Here are a few games we love to play:

The primary entrance to this park features a serene seating area with stylized pillars. The park also features a large playground with a great climbing wall, swings, slides, and other climbing apparatus. There is plenty of seating beside the playground including a couple of picnic tables. There is large green space ideal for impromptu pick up games such as ultimate frisbee, soccer, football or catch. The trail system intersects the park and connects with the rest of the neighbourhood making it ideal for the exercise enthusiasts or those out for a leisurely stroll. Due to the large number of new families in the area the park is very well used.
