FAQ’s - How Do I Become An Instructor & Lifeguard
The suggested first step is to take the the Standard 1st Aid (with CPR-C/AED) course. Then take the Bronze Medallion / Bronze Cross course - these 2 certifications allow you to apply as a Slide Attendant at Henderson Outdoor Pool. Next is the Water Safety Instructor course - this certification allows you to apply as an Instructor. Lastly it is the National Lifeguard course - this certification allows you to apply as a Lifeguard. Please note that at Recreation Excellence all Aquatic Staff must have a WSI certification as soon as soon as they are old enough to be certified so take it before NL. Bronze Medallion/Cross is a 32 hour course that will certify the successful candidate in both Bronze Medallion & Cross. Candidates must be 13+ yrs or have completed Bronze Star. Bronze Medallion is tested before testing for Bronze Cross & Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for National Lifeguard. Standard First Aid and CPR C with AED is a 16 hour course. Candidates must be 12+yrs of age. Water Safety Instructor: WSI is approximately 36hrs. held on 5 days over a 5week period. The course covers the foundation of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, planning, teaching and evaluating swimmers. Candidates are evaluated throughout the course and through individual study assignments. Successful candidates are certified as Water Safety Instructors and will be able to teach Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates must be 15yrs by the end of the course, hold a current Standard 1st Aid / CPR certification and attend 100% of the course to complete. National Lifeguard: NL is a 40 hour course that will certify successful candidates with the NL Pool Option Award. Chautauqua In 1917, Lethbridge was gearing up for a new form of entertainment, the Chautauqua. During the dark days of the First World War, the Chautauqua must have given people something to look forward to. The name Chautauqua came from its original location by the shores of Chautauqua Lake in New York. In time circuit or tent Chautauquas were created, a traveling adult education movement where entertainers, speakers, teachers, musicians and more travelled from community to community to educate and entertain. The first Chautauqua in Lethbridge opened on August 7, 1917, and ran until the 13th. Lethbridge was the first place to book a Chautauqua in western Canada (though not the first to host one). The Herald reported the first Chautauqua as a great success. Close to 2000 attended the first day’s events, with many coming from rural areas. Entertainment on the first day included the Treble Clef club, a quartet of young
women who “offered a melange of singing and elocution.” There was also a lecture by Victor M. Tobas on “The Measurement of a Man;” Ruthven Macdonald “Canada’s leading baritone”; S. Platt Jones, impersonator; and J. Sherman Wallace who spoke on the “World’s Greatest Need.” The first Lethbridge Chautauqua was held at Eckstorm Park but as it became an annual occurrence, a more regular location needed to be set aside. In the 1920s, a few city blocks east of 9 Street South and between 3 and 4 Avenues were called Chautauqua Square as that became the traditional place for the Chautauqua tents to set up. The Chautauqua came annually to Lethbridge between 1917 and the early 1930s. It faded away due to the Great Depression and people being able to access many of the same programs on the radio.

July 17 to 21 9 AM to 4:30 PM $220 per week | $180 for members
Epic Art Film Camp is an opportunity for youth to build filmmaking fundamentals using current technology. In this camp, filmmakers experience every step of the process from start to finish. Students develop a concept, write a script, create sets and costumes, perform, and shoot a film. They also learn how to edit and add basic visual effects. This filmmaking experience is student-driven, developing skills that youth can apply to other projects.
Art in Motion explores the influences of contemporary art. Using a wide array of media, campers will explore many forms of 2D and 3D art-making techniques while developing a strong understanding of concept and inspiration in contemporary art today. SAAG’s downtown park setting provides a perfect opportunity to get outside and visit other cultural institutions in Lethbridge. The week will culminate in an art show hosted by the class for family and SAAG visitors.

Children are innately creative, expressive, and imaginative. Under the direction of our Public Engagement Coordinator, artists experiment with many different media to explore painting, drawing, and sculpting. Our programs include a snack, story time, as well as some fresh air playtime in Galt Gardens. The week culminates in an art show hosted by the class for family and friends.

What is Nordic Pole Walking, and is it right for you? With spring underway, many of us are looking for different ways to get active. Nordic Pole Walking is a low-impact exercise with many health benefits. It will help get you outside and can be done at any age or with any fitness level! What is Nordic Pole Walking? It's simply walking outside while using ski poles. That's it! It was created in the early 1990s as a way to train for cross country skiing in the summer months. Since it incorporates the entire body, it is a great exercise for anyone who suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure or from being overweight. Nordic Pole Walking incorporates the muscles in our upper body (arms, back, shoulders and neck) as well as our lower body and transforms normal walking into a full body workout. Many clinical studies have shown the benefits of pole walking especially amongst an older population. It can increase weight loss and improve posture and cardiovascular health. Here are some more health benefits: -
Incorporates 90% use of body muscles (only 40% of muscles are used while walking without poles) Reduces stress on your hips and knees through the support of the poles Improves your posture and balance Upper body activity using the poles reduces upper back, neck and shoulder pains

Sunridge Park is a unique park that celebrates nature and the ability of wetland ecolgy to improve water quality. The lake and wetlands of Sunridge Park are a functional storm pond sysytem and many informational signs are posted throughout the park to explain how the wetlands work to reduce contaminants in storm water. A boardwalk is available to explore part of the wetland, as well as bridges, fountains and even a waterfall. There are also playground areas in the park suitable for all ages featuring climbing apparatus, swings, slides, and picnic tables for your visit. An extensive trail system meanders through the park providing exercise and nature enthusiasts alike ample opportunity to enjoy the park. There is some open green space located on a hill making it perfect for tobogganing in the winter or fitness challenges in the summer. This is definitely one of the City’s must see parks.
