Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - What is the proper way to swim Condition Swim? Condition Swim Etiquette Swimmers arriving at a pool should do three things before getting in the water: 1) Make note of “Fast, Medium, Slow” lane designations. If such signs aren't obvious at your pool, ask a lifeguard. a) An “Unstructured” lane may be available depending on the pool for activities such as water jogging etc. 2) Spend a few minutes observing and roughly timing the per-lap pace of swimmers already in the pool. 3) Select a lane containing swimmers moving as closely as possible to the pace that one realistically expects to swim throughout their entire workout rather than selecting a lane because there are no swimmers in it. a) A swimmer entering an open lane, or joining one person in a lane that's designated differently from their expected pace (i.e. faster swimmer in a “Slow” lane, or slower swimmer in a “Fast” lane), should stay aware of arriving swimmers, and be prepared to move to a more appropriate lane if/when other swimmers join them. 4) Follow the “Swimming Pattern” that is posted (i.e.) split lane or circular pattern a) When entering a lane with one or two swimmers make sure to confirm the pattern with the other swimmers especially when switching from split to circular 5) Respect and work with other swimmers to best enjoy your experience. If there are any issues that arise please enlist the assistance of the pool staff. Respect their decisions.

Sentiments felt by many at that time were echoed in a greeting from Lethbridge’s Mayor Hardie and City Council in the November 30, 1918, Lethbridge Herald: “To Commissioned Officers, Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men from the City of Lethbridge and surrounding district, and to all Canadians who have served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In tendering you, on behalf of the City of Lethbridge and district, Christmas Greetings, we cannot express the sentiments of appreciation and gratitude adequately, that are in our hearts and minds towards you who have done so much for us at home in Canada…. You have accomplished the almost impossible for which we devoutly thank you. For your gallant deeds the people of Canada shall enshrine upon their hearts the images of the noble men who saved the very soul of our Country.

measure of sacrifice and did more than all the rest, will never return. We will not forget – Canada cannot forget, their noble and enduring sacrifice on the altar of The Great War…. You have all had mothers, wives and sisters – such mothers, wives and sisters – that the whole allied nations are proud of them. They are proud of the living soldier and mourn their losses but bear them bravely. Their heads hold high in proud memory of their departed ones. All Hail to the Canadian Soldiers – living and dead – all hail.”

Our dead we mourn sincerely and bow our heads in the sorrowful thought that those who have made the last full

Joining Forces Again for Christmas www.ChristmasHope.ca

Community Services

This holiday season Interfaith Food Bank, Lethbridge Food Bank and Salvation Army are joining forces again to ensure that the less-fortunate in our community get everything they need for Christmas. We are very excited to announce that this year Lethbridge Family Services Angel Tree and My City Care Shop of Wonders are joining the Christmas Hope partnership. Because we share clientele, we will work together to serve 2500 households this Christmas, making the most of our resources and eliminating the duplication of services. This year we expect to assist as many as 3300 adults and 3000 children.

22

Christmas Hampers - Christmas Hampers will be standardized and will include day to day food and holiday goodies, regardless of which agency clients access. Visit our joint website, www.ChristmasHope.ca for our Wishlist items. Food and Toy Collections and Fund-raising— Each agency will be required to recruit support from within the community to come up with all of the supplies and resources required for this joint project. Donors can contribute at any location and we will arrange for proper distribution.

Please note: While we are working together on this Christmas Project, we still have requirements to meet on an individual organization basis. Food and Cash donations should be made to your charity of choice. Lethbridge Food Bank (403) 320-1879

Adopt-A-Family Program: Choose to adopt a family this Christmas, and do their shopping for them! Donors contact

Interfaith Food Bank to be matched with a family, then purchase all necessary supplies and drop off the bundle of cheer at Interfaith for us to distribute. For those who choose to shop – please contact Interfaith for a list of items to include with your bundle. For those who do not have time to shop – we will do the work for you; simply make a donation designated for one of the following: Family of 2 - $150; Family of 3-4 - $200; Family of 5-6 - $250; Family of 7-8 - $300

Under the Tree Toy & Gift Program: Put a tree up in your office, church, school or business and encourage others to bring food, toys, goodies, or stocking stuffers for children 17 years and under. No room for a tree? We will provide you with a decorative bin to collect items on behalf of Interfaith Food Bank, and will even pick it up when it is full. Please do not wrap gifts, and we would like to have bins returned between December 3-7th. Encourage others to be a “Secret Santa” for families in need.

“Living Places, Living Time: What I learned in 13 lunar cycles of Blackfoot Phenology” November 14 at 7pm at Community Room at Helen Schuler Nature Centre

Migration is the long distance movement of animals between two areas. It usually occurs during different seasons of the year and is primarily triggered by food availability. Here in Lethbridge our most well known migrants are birds.

Did You Know?

No maps? No Roads? No problem! Instinct, landmarks, stars, and the sun, are all used by birds as navigation aids. The master mechanism of migration however, is thought to be the use of magnetic fields. Crystals of magnetite in the heads of some birds act like a built-in compass enabling orientation without any visual clues!

Everyone is welcome to attend Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society meetings!

Physical Literacy…

…is when kids have developed the skills and confidence to be active for life Physical literacy is… • Simple. No special equipment or knowledge needed. • Fun. And it isn’t more work for parents. • Essential. Physical literacy used to come naturally, but in today’s world, those natural activities have been replaced by more inactivity.

What skills do kids need? At age 5-8 they should be practicing dodging, falling, balance, galloping, hopping, jumping, rolling, running, skipping, starting, stopping, catching, dribbling, kicking, throwing and volleying. Sounds like fun doesn’t it!
