Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Family Change Room Guidelines We sometimes get comments about patrons using change rooms of the opposite sex. Generally this involves younger children and sometimes special needs patrons. The fact that Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik pools were built many years ago at time when accessibility was not as big a consideration is the major factor creating this issue. Some family change rooms have been added to both Nicholas Sheran, Stan Siwik and most recently Henderson Pool that have helped to alleviate the problem. The general guideline that we use is that we ask patrons with children in the age range of 6 years & up to use the proper public change room or the Family change rooms (if the parent is incomfortable with them changing alone). If someone does use opposite sex change rooms with a child that is “older” we will suggest alternatives as our goal is not to be confrontational but rather to find a solution that works for everyone. The best is to try to work with each other to make it as comfortable as possible for everyone.

Aquatics

Some suggestions include but are not limited to: 1) Only use the Family Change rooms if you need to - this will keep them open for those that do need to use them a) If you use the Family change room please take your belongings with you so someone else can use the room 2) Use change stalls with the curtains if available in the public change rooms 3) Ask the staff for other alternatives for pools like Fritz Sick that don’t have Family Change rooms 4) Be tolerant of other peoples feelings 5) Be tolerant of the staff - likely they are asking because another patron has raised their concern and they are caught in the middle of a difficult situation.

Lethbridge Sugar Kings The Sugar Kings were created in 1963. Some of the early organizers of the team were Syd Hall, Leo Harrold, Joe Green and Bill Nugent. The team played as a Canadian Junior A hockey team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) between 1966 and 1973. The Sugar Kings were one of the five original member teams of the AJHL.

The team, under different ownership, redeveloped for the 1973-74 season as the Lethbridge Longhorns. The Sugar Kings best season was 1968-69. That year, they won the Alberta title and

advanced to the Memorial Cup, losing to the Regina Pats. In March 1971, the Sugar Kings lost their arena when the Lethbridge Arena was lost to fire. Disaster struck 35 second into the third period of a game against the Edmonton Maple Leafs. Incredibly the 1800 fans in attendance were all able to get out safely.

A few players who played for the Sugar Kings were: Larry Bignell, John Davidson, Len Frig, Lanny McDonald and Russ Walker.

Libraries are all about stories – but we’re also all about community!

As part of our 100th anniversary celebrations we are collecting YOUR stories about Lethbridge. We want to capture the experience of living in Lethbridge up to and including the year 2019 to create our version of a time capsule. The stories gathered will be vetted by a team of story experts – including Lethbridge Public Library’s Writer in Residence – and up to 100 stories will be chosen to be included in a bound copy of Letters for Lethbridge to be made available on the shelves of the Lethbridge Public Library.

AFTER OVERCOMING HARD TIMES, KEN GIVES BACK TO HELP OTHERS DO THE SAME. “The recession hit and I was laid off. I thought I’d be able to find a job anywhere, but that didn’t happen. I ended up getting a job pumping gas. I was making $8.25 an hour, which worked out to just $1,000 per month. At the end of the month I would think: “I’ve paid the babysitting costs. I’ve paid the rent. Now how do I feed and clothe these kids?” I didn’t have any money for groceries. One of my neighbours took me down to a United Way-supported food bank. I had the kids with me, and I’ll always remember that little red logo. I was able to feed my children...”

November marks the start of mating season for deer and moose – during this time their behavior is unpredictable! Alberta Transportation report collisions with animals are most likely to occur between November and March and most commonly take place between midnight and dawn!

Did You Know?

Stay safe on the roads: Slow down! Do not overdrive your headlights Watch for animals in both rural and urban areas Watch for deer crossing signs as these usually indicate traditional migration routes Deer travel in herds; if you see one, watch for others Be extremely vigilant near treed areas!

BE FIT FOR LIFE Immune System Health 6 Ways to Boost your Immune System to Stay Clear of Cold and Flu

For more information, call 403-382-6919 or go to lethbridgecollege.ca/befitforlife

Did You Know?

Try as many of the following: 1. Get your flu shot! It is scientifically proven that the flu vaccine decreases hospitalization. Just about everyone older than 6 months are recommended to get one, but the flu vaccine is especially important for people 65+. 2. Get enough sleep! Usually 7 to 9 hours for an adult - is key for good health. Not getting enough sleep can lead to higher levels of a stress hormone and inflammation in your body. 3. Exercise! Try to get regular, moderate-vigorous exercise for 30-minutes daily. It can help your immune system fight infection. 4. Eat well! Decrease your sugar intake, fruit sugars are okay. Increase fruit and vegetable consumption. Studies show that garlic and some mushrooms will also boost your immune system. 5. Chill out! Chronic stress exposes your body to a steady stream of stress hormones that suppress the immune system. So please - learn to meditate, connect with people, exercise to blow off steam, and slow down to take time for what matters most! 6. Laugh! Laughing is good for you. It curbs the levels of stress hormones in your body and boosts a type of white blood cell that fights infection.
