Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. One Prairie Province? In 1970, the Lethbridge Herald and The University of Lethbridge hosted a national conference on the feasibility of Prairie union. During the conference, academics, politicians, and members of the business and professional communities came together to discuss Prairie unity. It was noted that panellists were not chosen based on their opinion related to the subject, but in light of their expertise. The purpose of the conference wasn’t to pass any resolutions or make a decision, but to explore the concept, to have open debate of the issues and explore ideas around unification of the western provinces.

proved before it will be accepted by the age now being born. The conference covered everything from Constitutional considerations to sociological, political and economic concerns.

Cleo W. Mowers, editor and publisher of the Lethbridge Herald, noted the following reasons behind the conference in his preface to the conference proceedings: “These are curious times. One generation is frightened by the collapse of the old certainties, the other impatient with their persistence. The Western society we have known is tumbling down, undermined probably by the inexorable forces of the technological revolution, and a newer society for better or worse is taking shape. arts in lethbridge arts feature Centric MusicFest

Since its inaugural festival in 2014, Centric MusicFest, has become a permanent fixture in the city’s flourishing art and music scene. Building upon the success of its founder, Jesse Plessis, the yearly summer classical and art music festival has grown under the stewardship of Artistic Director Ryan Kolodziej to feature a combination of local and visiting world-class Canadian and international musicians from coast-to-coast.

that runs the festival, was granted non-profit status from the Alberta government in January. This recognition, coupled with the generous support from the City of Lethbridge Heart of Our City initiative and participation in the Canada-wide artsVest program, allowed the group to move forward with plans to include local music students in the festival. The lockdown has forced the festival to pivot and move programming online in a series of live-streamed Facebook concerts.

Providing opportunities for local musicians and visiting artists to present their work is at the heart of Centric MusicFest, including opportunities for collaboration. Previous festivals have featured seasoned international artists such as Krzysztof Jablonski (pianist, Calgary/Warsaw), Iliana Matos (guitarist, Lethbridge), and Andrew Wan (violinist, Montreal).

Utilizing technology to share music has become the new normal. While nothing will replace the experience of being present in the acoustics of the performance space, advantages of digital concerts include reaching a wider audience beyond our community’s borders. Concerts on Centric MusicFest’s Facebook page reached thousands of viewers from around the world including those from Highlighting the achievements of Lethbridge’s local the US, France, South Korea and Haïti. Playing Outside All Year Dressing for the weather makes outdoor activities so much better! As fall officially descends on Southern Alberta, it's time to get creative about how to keep spending time outside. With all the limitations around us right now, finding ways to play and socialize outdoors, even as days become colder and darker, can help us stay connected, enjoy being active and help improve our physical and mental health. Fall and winter weather are a fact here, so we just need to find ways to embrace it! The Right Equipment: Toques, gloves, mittens, scarves, balaclavas - keep those necks, ears and fingers toasty! Long underwear, fleece lined pants and snow pants - even for adults, they make time outside so much more comfortable! Windproof and insulated coats - add more layers underneath as needed. Waterproof and insulated boots - Don't let cold feet ruin your fun!

FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS! In our busy, on-the-go lives, many of us focus so much on work and family commitments that we never seem to have time for good old fashion fun. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, we stopped playing. But play is not just essential for kids; it can be an important source of relaxation and stimulation for adults as well.

1) Stress Relief. Play is fun and can trigger the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain. 2) Improved brain function. Playing chess, completing puzzles, or pursuing other fun activities that challenge the brain can help prevent memory problems and improve brain function. The social interaction of playing with family and friends can also help ward off stress and depression.

Public Information & Events

3) Stimulate the mind and boost creativity. Young children often learn best when they are playing—a principle that applies to adults, as well. You’ll learn a new task better when it’s fun and you’re in a relaxed and playful mood. Play can also stimulate your imagination, helping you adapt and solve problems.

36

4) Improve relationships and your connection to others. Sharing laughter and fun can foster empathy, compassion, trust, and intimacy with others. Play doesn’t have to include a specific activity; it can also be a state of mind. Developing a playful nature can help you loosen up in stressful situations, break the ice with strangers, make new friends, and form new business relationships. 5) Keep you feeling young and energetic. In the words of George Bernard Shaw, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” Play can boost your energy and vitality and even improve your resistance to disease, helping you function at your best.

Brene Brown describes play as doing things just because they're fun and not because they'll help achieve a goal. Play is vital to human development and at the core of creativity and innovation. Here are some ways to become a more playful person:
