Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada

Welcome to the October 2017

Recreation & Culture Guide Although the weather is changing, you can still get out and explore many aspects of our community in new ways! Enjoy perusing this month’s guide and find some inspiration to fill your leisure time with enjoyable activities at any of our recreational and cultural facilities. Arts Days at CASA and Alberta Culture Days at City Hall take us into October in fine style. Meanwhile, the Lethbridge Hurricanes are heating things up at the ENMAX Centre and promise an exciting season of WHL action! You’re probably looking forward to Thanksgiving weekend - a great time to enjoy an invigorating walk with the family in the river valley or in any of our beautiful parks to help ease the transition into winter. As a year of celebration draws nearer to a close, you might want to think about purchasing a Canada 150 commemorative tree for yourself, your family or a loved one in the new Watermark Park in West Lethbridge. Visit www.lethbridge.ca to learn more about the program. Monday, October 16th is Election Day. I hope everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to participate in electing the next Mayor and Council who will guide the City of Lethbridge for the next 4 years. Additional advance polls and mobile voting stations now make casting your vote easier than ever. Best wishes to all the candidates!

Chris Spearman, Mayor

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Registration

What is the process to register my child(ren) for lessons? We utilize a staggered registration process for lessons at Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik Pools. Registration will open for one facility first. When registration opens for that pool you can call in or go to any one of 3 pools (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran or Stan Siwik). All locations will be taking registration for that particular facility. The following week registration will open for the other facility and again all locations will be taking registration for that facility. Registration for the Winter 2018 Sessions begins as follows: Nicholas Sheran Pool - begins on Tuesday Nov 7, 2017 @ 9:00am Stan Siwik Pool - begins on Tuesday Nov 14, 2017 @ 9:00am Registration can be done in person and/or by phone. Neither form of registration takes precedent over the other - it is first come first served. If registering by phone please do not leave a message. Additional staff are added at both locations to speed up the process as much as possible. Please note that registration is an ongoing process and does not necessarily need to be done on the first day. On-line Registration is coming A new software provider has been selected and the City has begun the process of transitioning to this new software. Stay tuned for more information.

Northern Bus Lines In 1927, 90 years ago, Northern Bus Lines was started by S.F. Kotch.

Lethbridge Northern Bus Line’s initial route was through the communities of the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District. This connection is reflected in the company’s original name. The bus company connected the mining and farming communities north of Lethbridge, providing an essential service to people in the area. The company began with a Chrysler Limousine Touring Car but grew from there, adding more and larger buses. From the bus pictured above, it can be

noted that transportation from Lethbridge, Iron Springs, Picture Butte, Diamond City and Shaughnessy was part of the service of the company.

The company continued to grow and change its service. Through various name changes, the company became known as Kotch’s Exotic International Travel & Tours.

Mule Deer Did you know? 

 

Mule deer can often be found in the coulees of Lethbridge foraging among the hilly terrain of our river valley. If you startle them be sure to take note of their distinct, stifflegged, bouncing gait as they run away. Closer observation of the antlers of a buck will also reveal another distinct trait of mule deer—the beam of each antler divides into two equal lines.

Bucks average weight is about 100 kilograms; does weigh about 70 kilograms Get their name from their mule-like ears Look for seasonal colour variations— greyish brown in winter and reddish-brown in summer Found throughout Alberta, more commonly in Southern and Western Alberta More common in mountainous areas compared to white-tail deer The Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society

Healthy Eating in the Workplace The typical Canadian spends almost 2,000 hours at work each year. Considering all the time that is spent in the workplace and commuting to and from, the food intake choices we make during these times can have a major impact on our health and wellness. Just like any good habit, it takes time and commitment to develop a routine and a healthy approach to properly fuel our bodies for the day. Here are a couple tips on how to enhance your healthy lifestyle solely on our dietary choices. Planning is key! - Stock up on healthy foods - Bring nutritious meals & snacks - Avoid buying pre-packed lunches or cafeteria food - Make healthy eating a priority at home and at work - Balance is key Plan a day to go to the grocery store with your family and cook meals together. This will be one of the easiest ways to not only teach your children about healthy eating but to prepare for the school/work week. Remember! Think outside the lunch box – spice up leftovers, have breakfast for lunch or go green with a super-food salad.

The Sugar Bowl, formally known as Ravine Park, is the premier tobogganing spot in Lethbridge. The action on the hill doesn’t slow down during summer, often entertaining several groups of slip and sliders on hot days. The updated playground at the top of Ravine park includes exciting obstacle course style fitness equipment suitable for children aged 5 - 12 and also a smaller adult focused fitness loop. This park is a hub for physical activity, utilizing natures steep slopes and wide open spaces for endurance training as well as its scenic regional trail connecting with the river valley to the west via the tunnel under Scenic Drive, as well as to Henderson to the north east. Bring a picnic lunch and your sense of adventure for a fun filled experience at the Sugar Bowl!
