Welcome the October
Recreation & Culture Guide
A from Mayor Blaine HyggenAs the leaves fall it is Mother Nature’s reminder that our sports and rec activities are about to change. We can enjoy every last day of sunshine and outdoor activity that the weather allows but it’s time to start planning for staying active as Winter approaches.
This month’s Recreation and Culture Guide has many great options for you to choose from. Maybe this is the year you learn to curl with the fun introductory programs at the Lethbridge Curling Club, take up cross country skiing, learn how to snowshoe or just stay active at a local gym or pool. If you weren’t aware, check out our local library as they offer free “rentals” of many outdoor sports equipment options like snowshoes.
Fall is also the time to enjoy some great local sports. Our local High School football programs are in full swing, our Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge Pronghorns are on the courts and, of course, our hometown Lethbridge Hurricanes are back for another exciting season of WHL hockey.
After the success of last year’s Mayor’s Hockey Challenge, I am happy to announce this year’s game will be November 27th, 4-6pm at the ATB East arena. Join us for a fun hockey game featuring many local community leaders. Entry is free, but we encourage a donation to our local foodbanks. They will be on site to accept food or cash donations as you see fit.
See you at the rink, pool, gym or game. Stay healthy and happy,
Mayor Blaine HyggenOpen Swim

75 Years Ago, Lethbridge Board of Trade Renamed
In 1947, the Lethbridge Board of Trade was renamed the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce.
On 22 October 1947, C.A. Bryant presented the following resolution to the Board of Trade at its regular meeting.
“Whereas in the past this association has been known as the Lethbridge Board of Trade, Inc.
Commerce’ and ‘Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Incorporated’, respectively.”
The resolution was endorsed unanimously by the members present.
Following the meeting, a petition then was sent to the Governor General requesting that the Lethbridge Board of Trade be permitted to change its name.
In December 1947 permission was given and the name formally changed.

Greater Sage-Grouse: Endangered
Source: globalchange.gov

Did You Know?
The Greater Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) status is "endangered" in Alberta (COSEWIC 2021).
They are commonly known as Sage Hens or Sage Chickens and their scientific name means "Spiny Tailed Pheasant." It refers to the long pointed tail which is fanned out by males during mating displays on leks. Members of this species are true grouse and not pheasants.
Greater Sage Grouse are the largest Canadian grouse and are sexually dimorphic.
Females average 56.1 cm long, and males average 74.7 cm long.
in Canada's southernmost native prairies where sagebrush grows. They are dependent on sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata and/or A. cana) for nesting and wintering habitat and do not exist beyond the range of the plants. This polygamous species concentrates at leks located in flat areas near creek valleys.
Their populations are affected by parasites, predation, weather, pesticides, and habitat alteration. Historically the conversion of Sage Grouse habitat into farmland played a major role in its early decline. Nowadays industrial disturbance has been a particularly major factor.

HOW TO TEACH KIDS TO CATCH CORRECTLY
Because Catching is a Fundamental Movement Skill
This article excerpt was published in the Lethbridge Sport Council online magazine > lethbridgesportcouncil.ca/sportmatters
Catching is a fundamental skill for many games and activities. Does your child show an interest in baseball or basketball? Do you imagine introducing them to cricket, football, or Frisbee someday? Catching is essential.
Like all fundamental movement skills, catching isn’t a skill that just “happens” on its own. It needs to be learned and developed. Children need to be introduced to catching and have opportunities to develop their skill until they can feel confident catching in a variety of games, activities, and situations.
Basic movements of catching
To catch an object such as a ball or a disk in flight, these are the movements your child needs to learn:
Move your body into the object’s flight path. We often say “get your body behind it” so you aren’t reaching sideways to catch it (If you get your body behind it, and you miss your catch, your body will still stop it.) Make sure the palms of your hands are facing forward
If the object is arriving at chest height or higher, your fingers should point up and your thumbs should be almost touching. If the object is arriving below your chest, your fingers should point down and your two pinky fingers should be almost touching. Keep your eyes on the object and watch it all the way into your hands As you receive the object with your hands, bring the object to your body.

Operations staff numbers drop from nearly 200 workers to under 20 from October until the following Irrigation workers blow out irrigation lines to prevent damage to
