Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada

Welcome to the October 2020 Recreation & Culture Guide

A Message from Mayor Chris Spearman

The change in weather is a sure sign that winter is just around the corner and means a shift in how we spend our leisure time. Enjoy perusing this month’s Recreation and Leisure Guide and find some inspiration to fill your leisure time with enjoyable activities at any of our recreational and cultural facilities. As we look forward to a gradual re-opening of some of our recreation facilities after the COVID-19 slow down, I want to thank everyone for your patience and individual efforts to keep us safe. We encourage you to continue to do your best to adhere to the guidelines in place to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community. This year, Thanksgiving and our ability to share the holiday with family and friends will take on special meaning, and we can be thankful for all we have done as a community to keep each other safe. The great outdoors are calling for an invigorating walk with the family in the river valley or in any of our beautiful parks to help ease the transition into winter. Be sure to take advantage of these beautiful fall days before the snow flies. If you have swimmers in your family, you’ll be glad to learn that some of our pools have or will soon re-open. If you have questions about pools, arenas or other City of Lethbridge facilities, please visit: www.lethbridge.ca/thingstodo for the latest information. Schedules at our facilities may change on short notice so it’s always a good idea to check ahead. And remember, if you have questions about any City of Lethbridge service or programs, you can call 311 during business hours for all the answers. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Chris Spearman, Mayor City of Lethbridge

Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. 1870 Battle of the Belly River Known by various names, including the Battle of the Belly River, the story of the 1870 battle is a complicated one. The battle is the culmination of a series of events and for the full story to be told, many perspectives and personal stories need to be shared. This short article cannot in any way tell the complete story and is simply a short summarization. Readers are encouraged to find more narratives to complete their understanding of the event.

City Council of the time chose the name submitted by J.B.R. ‘Bert’ Staddon – Indian Battle Park. The battle has been named a National Historic Event and the photograph shows Chief Jim Shot Both Sides, left, shaking hands with Lieutenant Governor Ralph G. Steinhauser while Leonard Stephen Marchand, MP, looks on, at the unveiling of the 1870 battle monument.

In the late fall of 1870, the area that is now the Lethbridge river valley and west Lethbridge was the scene of a battle between the Kainai & Aamsskáápipikani (Southern Piikani) against the Nakoda (Assiniboine) & their Cree allies. The battle started near the original Fort Whoop-Up site and ranged across the area of west Lethbridge until it ended in what is now Indian Battle Park. In 1960, when the park was being developed, 47 names were suggested.

Lethbridge Artist Club - Going Strong Since 1936, the Lethbridge art scene has flourished and has included the presence of an enthusiastic art club. Over the last 84 years, members of the Lethbridge Artist Club have created art, taught others the skills to make their own art, exhibited and sold their work throughout Lethbridge. This tradition continues to this day.

have taught various forms of art through Casa’s Artist Partnership Program, the Galt Museum’s community outreach sessions, Helen Schuler Nature Centre’s Community Gallery and at private gatherings. Teaching, education and self-improvement are part of members’ practice. The annual fall Art Retreat allows for a weekend focused on creating, connecting and learning from one another.

Exhibiting artwork in the community has always been part of the goals of the club and members have shown their work at Casa, Arts Days, the Joan Waterfield Gallery in The Yates, Coaldale Library, Galt Museum & Archives and at many other locations in southern Alberta. They participate, as a group, in the annual Christmas at Casa sale. As well, members show and sell individual pieces on the club website, lethbridgeartistsclub.com. This has allowed members to exhibit their work throughout the months of the lockdown.

Due to the current pandemic, members are working independently but are connecting through technology. Members share their newest works and have the opportunity for constructive critiques via email. This September and October, day trips will be held where artists will gather, at a safe distance, in various locations in and around Lethbridge to enjoy working outdoors. Weather permitting these excursions will allow for physical distancing and lots of creating followed by a gentle critique. Get involved and see the full schedule of autumn painting trips on the website lethbridgeartistclub.com

Education and a devotion to improving one’s art practice has also been a constant throughout the club’s history. Members

Similar to Will Scarlet, looking soft while walking slowly through the forest when he encountered Robinhood, porcupines prefer to avoid combat: unnerving their opponents by erecting quills, turning their back, ominous teeth chattering, and even screaming during mating season. Urine scent also provides vital information.
