1921 Houses of Lethbridge Based on the information provided in the Historical Resources Inventory (Survey), all of these homes were constructed in 1921 and so celebrated their 100th birthday this past year. This provides us an opportunity to look at residential designs of a century ago. What do you notice about these 100 year old homes? How do they compare to new homes today?

The Majestic Snowy Owl Did You Know? Credit: G. Romanchuk
Credit: Dr. Gordon Court
Photo: JasperWildlife.com
Like most owls, they have excellent distance eyesight. Snowy Owls can see for up to a kilometre really well. A mouse half a kilometre away scurrying across the snow, that's lunch! They also have thick pads on the bottom of their feet. Nature Lethbridge on Instagram
Follow Us & Tag: #naturelethbridge
These feathers and pads act like snowshoes to prevent the owl from sinking into the snow. Sharp talons are used to grab prey. Snowy Owls have an abundance of feathers to keep them warm, which adds to their weight of around 4 pounds. This thick feathering makes Snowy Owls the heaviest owl species in North America; they're a pound heavier than a Great Horned Owl and double the weight of North America's tallest owl, the Great Gray Owl. Female Snowy Owls are larger than males, as they're over 2 feet tall and have wingspans of up to 6 feet.

Did You Know?
Did you know that you can tell the Snowy Owl's (Bubo scandiacus) age by its colouring? The whiter they are, the older they are. These magnificent creatures breed in the Arctic and migrate to Alberta during the winter. Unlike most owls, the Snowy Owl is also most active during the day.

KEY BENEFITS OF PARKS AND OPEN SPACE IN LETHBRIDGE
“Parks are a good investment”
While wellness, environmental and quality of life reasons are often used to justify a continued investment in parks and natural spaces, these spaces are also a worthwhile economic investment. Great park spaces increase neighbourhood value, attract visitors and new residents.
Research also supports that park spaces increase property values for residents that live in close proximity to them. Preserving land for parks and open space can be more financially beneficial in the long term for a municipality than developing that same space. For references and more information please visit: https://www.lethbridge.ca/parkbenefits
Did You Know?
The annual net benefit of public trees in Lethbridge is calculated at over $3.9 million dollars. This includes estimated energy savings provided by trees: CO2 storage, improvements to air quality, storm water retention and the aesthetic value of the City’s tree canopy.
