Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Admission Policy Why is there an Admission Policy at the pools?
As “the Lifeguarding Experts” the Lifesaving Society has been setting the standard for Lifeguarding for over 45 years. The Lifesaving Society helps to set Aquatic Safety Standards in Canada in an effort to fulfill their Mission Statement : To prevent drowning and water-related incidents for all Canadians by providing: - lifesaving, lifeguarding, and leadership education - public education - water safety research In the Public Aquatic Facility Safety Standards manual it is stated that Admission Policies shall be established as part of the facility rules including items such as minimum age and requirements for supervision of children. As an affliate of the Lifesaving Society Recreation Excellence follows the standards set out by the Society and their efforts to prevent drowning.
Aquatics
Secondary to the safety of the child is the risk management issues that could arise should any orgranization involved in Lifegaurding choose not to follow these standards. As a responsible company Recreation Excellence makes every effort to ensure the safety of the patrons that come to the facilities we operate. The Lifesaving Society continually reviews and makes changes to standards and such items like Admission Policies can change as standards change. The current policy at the Lethbridge Pools is: “Children under the age of 8yrs and those that can’t swim must be within arms reach of an Adult” If you are not within arms reach you have gone too far - it only takes seconds for the unthinkable to happen and even though pools are supervised it is everyone’s responsibility for the safety of a child.

Libraries are all about stories – but we’re also all about community!
As part of our 100th anniversary celebrations we are collecting YOUR stories about Lethbridge. We want to capture the experience of living in Lethbridge up to and including the year 2019 to create our version of a time capsule. The stories gathered will be vetted by a team of story experts – including Lethbridge Public Library’s Writer in Residence – and up to 100 stories will be chosen to be included in a bound copy of Letters for Lethbridge to be made available on the shelves of the Lethbridge Public Library.

Prairie Rattlesnake The Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society Join us to learn more about your natural world! Next meeting: LNS Potluck September 8 5-7pm at Popson Park Picnic Shelter Photo: Ken Moore
As fall draws closer you may encounter migrating snakes on your walks in the river valley. In the month of September it is common to find rattlesnakes making their way back to den sites in preparation of the changing seasons. You may find groupings of snakes near den sites as they soak up the remaining summer sun.
Did You Know?
Rattlesnakes are master of camouflage. Make sure you remain alert and be aware of your surroundings when hiking in the coulees, especially when you are in the natural areas of southwestern Lethbridge. Stay on established trails. Keep your dog on a leash!
32
Your first indication of a nearby rattlesnake may be the rasp of its rattle. This is the snake’s way of getting your attention to warn you of its presence. Be especially careful on windy days when you ability to hear the warning might be reduced. Rattlesnakes are not aggressive and given a choice will retreat rather than strike. However, if surprised, stepped on or cornered, they can strike up to a distance about half of their length. Source: ”Living with Rattlesnakes in Lethbridge” brochure
Everyone is welcome to attend the Potluck to meet other naturalists and share recent sightings! We will have boiled water so people can make coffee or tea. People are invited to bring a casserole, salad or dessert to share with everyone; people are also instructed to bring their own plates and cutlery.
We enjoy a social meal together, them usually go for a short hike along the edge of the river before sundown.

BE FIT FOR LIFE School Lunches
Eat well, live well, with a little help from the Canada Food Guide Going back to school will be a little more enjoyable when you are feeling good and eating foods with high nutritional value as healthy foods help our brain, energy levels, and body. Things to consider when making your lunch: - Choose foods that have little to no added sodium, sugars or saturated fat. -Compare the nutrition facts table on foods to choose products that are lower in sodium, sugars or saturated fat and higher in fiber and protein. - Use healthy fats to keep you fuller for a longer duration, protein to build up muscles, and smart carbs for energy. - Add vegetables to every plate - Canada Food Guide recommends that half your plate is full of vegetables and fruit Our BFFL September Challenge: 1. Choose one food item that you know is not good for you and cut it out of your diet for 30 days 2. Water - take half your body weight and drink that amount of water in onces, daily. For example, if you weigh 100 lbs, you will drink 50 oz at minimum, daily 3. Try new healthy recipes weekly!

Book an appointment with your optometrist and have the comfort of knowing an eye health or vision problem won’t prevent your child from reaching their full learning potential. Children’s eye exams are covered by Alberta Health. Find an optometrist at: optometrists.ab.ca/findanoptometrist
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT! • 80% of classroom learning is visual. • 1 in 4 children have some form of vision problem. • More than 43% of children who have a vision or eye health problem can pass a basic vision screening or sight test. An eye exam by an optometrist is accurate, and will check for a number of possible vision problems. • Children with vision problems are often misdiagnosed as having learning or behavioural disabilities.
Eye See . . . Eye Learn® is a program that provides kindergarten students (or those going into kindergarten in September) with an eye exam by an optometrist, which is covered by Alberta Health. If required, kindergarten students also receive a FREE pair of eyeglasses. Visit optometrists.ab.ca/esel for more information.
