100 Years of Peace Ceremony, 1921 On 6 September 1921, Lethbridge residents participated in the Hands Across the Border celebration to honour a century of peace between Canada (Great Britain) and the United States. Mayor Hardie along with members of the Board of Trade, Rotary Club, Good Roads Association and other organizations traveled to Sweet Grass-Coutts to participate in the ceremony. Approximately 500 people from both sides of the border were in attendance and representatives of both countries lined up along the border.

During the event, David Elton noted that he hoped that the “clasping of the hands across the border today would be a bond of everlasting friendship…. He pleaded for a better understanding between the two English speaking peoples, and for the squelching of little Americans and little Canadians who were forever stirring up trouble.” After the ceremony, everyone was welcomed to the American side of the border for a baseball game.

The national anthems of both countries were sung. Then Ella Crawford, representing America, and Vera Haskell, on behalf of Canada and Britain, clasped hands across the border (as shown in the photograph). Both of the young girls were draped in their national colours and flags.

Bull Trout Spawn in the Fall Did You Know? Photo: oldmanwatershed.ca

Photo: thestar.com

Photo: letsgooutdoors.ca

Like all char, Bull Trout spawn in the fall, from midAugust to late October. Birds of Prey Centre in Coaldale

Daily Hours Open, 9:30 to 5:00 p.m.

Digging of the spawning site, or redd, and spawning is like that of other salmonids.

For more information: https://www.alberta.ca/ bull-trout.aspx

Spawning usually occurs during the day but in some disturbed systems, spawning occurs at night. Bull Trout fecundity depends on female body size; the larger fluvial and ad-fluvial females produce more eggs (2000 - 5000+) than the smaller stream-resident females (< 1000).

https://letsgooutdoors.ca /blogs/item/307-fightingfor-our-provincial-fishbull-trout-in-the-tay-river https://naturecanada.ca/ news/blog/no-bull-nativetrout-threatened-inalberta/ https://cpawssouthernalberta.org/bulltrout-and-westslopecutthroat-trout/

Fertilized eggs incubate in the gravel overwinter before fry typically hatch from March onwards. The incubation period is temperature dependent and can take from 35 days to more than 4 months.

Did You Know?

Bull Trout usually reach sexual maturity between five and seven years of age. Although Bull Trout are iteroparous, there is strong evidence that they display alternate-year spawning or resting periods between consecutive spawning events. This reproductive strategy, which is often condition and survival dependent, may enable them to accrue sufficient energy for reproduction in colder, less productive systems.

“Parks are good for our environment”

Parks and open space provide multiple environmental benefits to a community including the provision of space for wildlife habitat, native plants and public trees.

Did You Know?

Public trees in Lethbridge provide many benefits for the environment and sustainability of our City including: •Storing over 128 million kg of CO2 and sequester over 4 million kg of CO2 from the atmosphere. •Protecting infrastructure through the prevention of erosion and the reduction of rainwater through storm sewers. •Intercepting over 331,000 cubic metres of rainfall feach year. •Creating a significant neighbourhood cooling effect whichresults in increased comfort and energy savings for residents. •Removing particulates and pollution from the air.

48

Parks also provide habitat for wildlife. Birds, deer, rabbits, coyotes, porcupines and skunks are just a few of Lethbridge’s wild residents making their home in our parks and river valley spaces. Each play a key role in the function and balance of the natural ecosystems that are our parks. For references and more information please visit: https://www.lethbridge.ca/parkbenefits
