Red Cross has decided to turn down their involvement in water safety throughout 2022. By January 2023 there will no longer be Red Cross Water Safety Instructor courses or lessons. Standard First Aid will continue. The Lifesaving Society is taking over that responsibility. We are working with them to program our new Swim for Life Instructor courses and lessons. We're excited for this new chapter and look forward to working with everyone! Note: Must bring proof

During Operations:
A day that will live in infamy… Well, maybe not, but 75 years ago, it was the day the last street car operated in TheLethbridge.streetcar system started in 1912. The system was in place for the Dry Farming Congress that October and during the Congress, 5000 visitors came to Lethbridge over the week long event. The street car system had an initial cost of over $250,000 and began with 17 km or 11 miles of track. The city purchased five double track streetcars, followed by five smaller single track cars. The cars were amber and cream in colour and displayed the sign “Lethbridge Municipal InitiallyRailway.”there were five lines serving north Lethbridge, Henderson Lake Park, the south side residential district and a small downtown area. The various lines were known by a mixture of names and colours. They were downtown, orange, white, red and blue. The system as originally built wasn’t sustainable. The downtown line was discontinued soon after. Staff numbers were cut and then staff were dismissed and hired back at a lower wage. In 1917, all cars were reduced to single operators. That same year, one of the south side residential lines was Indiscontinued.1939,buses were added to the transit fleet and in 1947 the city moved entirely to buses.

The Lethbridge Society of Independent Dance Artists (LSIDA) celebrates dance as an artform in Lethbridge by fostering a community of dance artists through education, creation, and performance. LSIDA connects to the greater community throughout the year via dance classes and an annual fundraising dance show. Last year’s successful show was entitled THE GARDEN and was set in the atmospheric Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden. Set outdoors with intimate performances and live, acoustic music, this show allowed choreographers and dancers to create an immersive experience for the audience.

This year’s fundraising show September 16, 5:30pm – 8:30pm throughout Casa. This is not your typical fundraiser, as the audience explores dance as they move through the building and create art with the dance artists. The show will give you a glimpse of the dancer’s mind as choreographers and dancers create and perform new works on the y in the Casa Community Room and Dance Studio. Watch Pause.Art.Play, LSIDA’s public art dance lm on loop throughout the night. Get creative and draw dancers as they move on the patio. Play movement games with us in the Penner Studio. As well there will be a ra e and a cash bar. This event is family-friendly and open to everyone who loves dance. Tickets will be $10 and available at Casa to purchase. Watch for LSIDA’s Fallback 4 Pack Dance Workshops this fall. These workshops provide professional development opportunities for local intermediate and professional dancers. These workshops are also a great opportunity to network with the community and move. Know?YouDid31 Bull Trout Spawn in the Fall Home of the Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society Bull Trout usually reach sexual maturity between five and seven years of age. Although Bull Trout are iteroparous, there is strong evidence that they display alternate year spawning or resting periods between consecutive spawning events. This reproductive strategy, which is often condition and survival dependent, may enable them to accrue sufficient energy for reproduction in colder, less systems.productive Like all char, Bull Trout spawn in the fall, from mid August to late October. Digging of the spawning site, or redd, and spawning is like that of other salmonids. Spawning usually occurs during the day but in some disturbed systems, spawning occurs at night. Bull Trout fecundity depends on female body size; the larger fluvial and ad fluvial females produce more eggs (2000 - 5000+) than the smaller temperaturetheFertilizedfemalesstream-resident(<1000).eggsincubateingraveloverwinterbeforefrytypicallyhatchfromMarchonwards.Theincubationperiodisdependentandcantakefrom35daystomorethan4months. ECONOMIC IMPACT

A REASON TO RALLY
BUILDING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY Sport opens up a social network with the community Participants (and their parents in the case of youth participants) who may not have otherwise crossed paths meet and get to know each other Sport can form long lasting connections between people LIFE LESSONS Important life lessons can be learned through sport at a young, developing age. Sport can teach healthy competition, the importance of strategy, critical thinking, and teamwork Very often we find that leaders in our community were very active in sport as youth, where they learned those valuable life lessons.
Whether it is cheering for Team Canada around an Olympic broadcast, cheering for team Alberta at the Tim Horton's Brier at the ENMAX Centre, or coming out to the stadium on a Friday night to support the local high school football team, sport brings people together to cheer and support our teams and athletes
Lethbridge hosts numerous sporting events every year. Some are small and some are large. They always bring people to town, often to stay for a few days While they are here, they spend their money on hotels, at restaurants, shopping, at attractions, and they fuel up to go home. Every event hosted has a positive economic impact for our city. It was recently released that the Brier generated and estimated $16 8 million in economic activity for Lethbridge. It isn't just the big events though, a local skating club hosts a competition that brings nearly 700 athletes to town each year. When you factor in their families and coaches, it adds up. Recently Tier 2 soccer provincials were hosted in Lethbridge, and 42 of the 47 teams competing were from out of town. If you do the math, that is a LOT of people contributing to the economic activity in Lethbridge..
Besides the obvious mental and physical health benefits of sport, there are many ways sport positively impacts the lives of everyone, whether you are playing, officiating, coaching, or spectating.
HELPS ACHIEVE BALANCE
This is by no means an exhaustive list of the reasons why sport matters. We really could go on and on In fact, we think sport matters so much, we made a magazine to make it easier for you to find ways to participate in sport and active recreation. We invite you to check it out > https://lethbridgesportcouncil ca/sportmatters
In a world where the pressures and stress of life are never ending, sport is a great way to change your pace and distract yourself, even if just temporarily Sport doesn't have to mean organized, and it doesn't have to be competitive. A hike in the coulees, a round of golf, shooting hoops at the schoolyard, joining a game of shinny, playing grounders with the kids on the playground, all those things count, and will have a positive impact on you.
The benefits of sport are vast, and reach far beyond the gains an athlete will experience. The broader community benefits from sport in a variety of ways, including: Why Sport Matters
Anishinaabek First Nation, which is located on Lake Nipigon, Ontario Hunter has been swimming since she was 7 years old, and she just finished her first year of varsity swimming at the University of Lethbridge where she was awarded MVP for the woman’s swim team. Before swimming, Hunter enjoyed gymnastics, dance, and horseback riding. In 2017, Hunter competed in the North American Indigenous Games held in Toronto, where she placed top three in all 9 events she swam The NAIG sees over 5,000 participants from 13 nations competing in 14 core sports. After her success at NAIG she decided to take the sport more seriously and she continued training for the national championships Hunter has always had a passion for swimming; her dedication to the sport and competitive mindset is what made her the athlete she is today.

The City of Lethbridge will be taking action in September 2022 to remove an invasive goldfish population from one of our city’s storm water ponds. Goldfish are extremely adaptable to Alberta’s climate, and readily outcompete native fish species for food, oxygen and breeding sites as well as introducing many parasites. Due to the way they search for food in the mud, goldfish cause murky looking water, increase algae blooms and decrease beneficial plant life growing in the ponds from lack of sunlight.
