The vehicle was said to require an entire bedside replacement. That job was fixed in two days by a dent repair expert using KECO glue products and techniques. While experts are humming and hawing over whether the results are up to spec, what is not up for debate is the fact that this Rivian looks about 99 percent better.

ASTECH RULES ENGINE BY REPAIRIFY The patented and proprietary asTech Rules Engine provides shops with the ability to select an aftermarket diagnostic scan that will read all of a vehicle’s OEM modules correctly, equivalent to that of an authentic OEM tool. With the Rules Engine enabled, asTech customers can be confident with the accuracy and cost of the recommended scan type. AR

asTech, a Repairify company, has been using its Rules Engine platform to reveal a plethora of data in the collision repair industry. Recently, the asTech engineers behind Rules Engine conducted thousands of tests scanning vehicles in the North American car parc using aftermarket OEM scan tools. In several cases, aftermarket scan tools failed to throw critical codes that only OEM-branded scan tools picked up. In one instance, an aftermarket scan tool missed a procedure calling for an entire airbag module replacement—a critical, life-saving operation, in some cases. With Rules Engine at a technician’s side, any shortcomings involved with using an aftermarket scan tool are noted by the program. So, in the event an aftermarket scan tool is used and a DTC is missed, Rules Engine will notify you that something is missing. It has your back—and your business’s best interest in mind.

dditive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, has become an increasingly viable tool within the automotive industry as a strategy for efficiency and ease in manufacturing. According to a recent report made by the Task Force group, “the integration of 3D printing into the collision repair industry presents exciting possibilities that can revolutionize vehicle restoration.” Made up of prominent entities such as IBIS Global, HP’s Barcelona Facility, Thatcham Research, ADAC Automotive, Carhart Products, Boyd Group and I-CAR, the Task Force group’s report focused on “engaging with industry stakeholders [to conduct] research on 3D printing applications” as well as “identifying key areas for improvement.” Of specific focus was the potential benefits for different levels of the industry as well as the rising concern of the “risks associated with using poor quality 3D printed auto parts.” In terms of the possible benefits of integrating 3D technologies, the report identifies that additive manufacturing offers OEMs several advantages. produce complex geometric and intricate designs with expediated ease as well as the ability to help enhance performance while also reducing the overall weight and fuel efficiency for vehicles. With the rise of EV technology and an environmental push to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the automotive industry, having the ability to improve fuel efficiency and vehicle weight helps contribute to these future goals. Moreover, in terms of sustainability and future conservation goals, the environmental impact of manufacturing is substantially reduced through 3D printing. The technology minimizes material waste by utilizing only the necessary amounts of raw materials and recycling excess material, also reducing the logistics footprint. There is also the ability to “salvage parts that were once discarded due to missing or damaged plastic components” and this “empowers vehicle salvage and parts recyclers to diversify their offerings and to contribute to a more sustainable automotive supply chain.” Other OEM benefits highlighted by the report include the potential for “a significant

reduction in lead times and inventory costs [because] manufacturers can produce parts on demand, eliminating the need for extensive warehousing.” When it comes to the production of smaller short-run plastic components, the report also found that the use of 3D printing was more efficient for production when compared to traditional large-volume injection molding manufacturing. Specifically, smaller short-run plastic components would include the production of repair kits for headlights, sensor cradles for bumper covers, and high-value clips. 3D printing could also be viable to produce discontinued or out-of-stock-parts. The report further highlighted potential benefits for automotive insurance companies by providing the opportunity for “reduced claim payouts, expedited settlements and heightened customer satisfaction” through the result of quicker repairs and cycle times. In order to facilitate some of these benefits, the report documents the possibility of how “these innovative solutions could be distributed through an OEM or aftermarket supply model”

which would provide the opportunity to “enhance aftermarket offerings and align supply channels and repair parts with OEM standards in certain models.” In turn, this could “potentially pave the way for in-house desk-top printers in larger collision centres or those that support a huband-spoke model.” However, despite these potential pro’s, the Task Force group also outlines a series of challenges that could potentially harm the future growth of 3D printing in the automotive industry. Of primary concern for the Task Force Group is the “influx of substandard, unregulated parts from unverified or unlicensed sources attempting to capitalize on 3D printing” channels. The report outlines one instance in which an unnamed USA-based MSO used 3D printing to make replacement vehicle parts but provided no information regarding the types of materials or printers used. When further investigated by the Task Force group, the report found that “this MSO was not an isolated case, and another overseas-based MSO is also using similar lower-grade materials and printers to repair prestige headlights.” Ultimately, for the Task Force group, “the short-term uncertainties outweigh the potential opportunities, especially when it comes to ensuring that end parts meet a yet-to-beestablished standard for vehicle repairs.” The primary risks that can come from using low-grade 3D printed parts include safety concerns regarding structural weakness; incompatibility and ill-fitting parts that reduce 18 BUYERSGUIDE.COLLISIONREPAIRMAG.COM

vehicle functionality; reduced longevity in vehicle parts; warranty and insurance violations potentially resulting in higher costs for the owner; and legal liabilities for OEMs and collision repair centres in the event of an accident or failures caused by poor parts. For OEMs and collision repair centres specifically, there is also the risk of reputation loss as faulty parts would decrease consumer confidence in these businesses’ ability to produce vehicles and make successful repairs. There is also continued risk to legitimate and recognized 3D printing providers such as the creation of market confusion, price pressures and difficulties maintaining reputation. On this note, the Task Force offers possible future solutions to protect the legitimacy of automotive 3D printing. The group suggests recommendations such as creating a regulatory body “responsible for

overseeing the use of 3D-printed auto parts.” Other suggestions include developing industry-wide quality standards and validation protocols for 3D printed parts; creating certification programs for 3D printing materials; implementing a rigorous material testing process; encouraging OEM and 3D printing provider collaborations; creating education opportunities; and enforcing penalties for non-compliance. Overall, while there is still room for continued growth when it comes to the future development of 3D printing procedures, the Task Force group feels that despite developing difficulties, 3D printing has a bright future in automotive manufacturing and repair. If frameworks can be fashioned, then the industry can successfully “harness the benefits of 3D printing while ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and reliability.”

he automotive industry has been making significant strides towards sustainability in recent years. As concerns about climate change and environmental impact continue to grow, automakers are embracing innovative solutions to reduce their carbon footprint and minimize resource consumption. Four areas where automotive manufacturers are working on driving the industry toward a greener future include the use of recycled and bio-based materials and light-weight materials, the use of sustainable interior materials and sustainable metals. On this note, one automaker that continues to push the environmental envelope is Kia. The South Korean automaker has continued to develop its “10 must-have sustainable items” in its cabin construction using bio-based materials such as mushrooms, hemp, corn and sugarcane.

Kia offers interior materials made from sawdust and ‘bio-polyurethane’ leather as well as floor carpet made from 100 percent recycled PET bottles and recycled fishing nets.

In a press release regarding its upcoming EV3, Kia says these natural fibres can also be used to help reduce vehicle weight and to add a natural tone to vehicle interiors. In regard to the use of sustainable metals, according to Lithia Motors Inc., the global steel industry reclaims and reuses over 14 million tonnes of steel from retired cars every year to make over 8.5 million new vehicles. Similarly, the use of new steel made from recycled cars can reduce a vehicle’s structural weight by 25 percent and cut CO2 emissions by 15 percent. The increased use of recycled aluminum in automotive designs has also allowed for a more sustainable push for lighter vehicles. Aluminum is the material of choice for many EV manufacturers because of its capacity to reduce vehicle weight and offset often heavy battery packs. In an announcement made earlier this year, BMW Group declared its intention to source aluminum with significantly reduced CO2 emissions from Rio Tinto’s hydro powered operations in Canada beginning in 2024. As such, while it can be easy to feel stuck in rising climate change news, it’s important to remember that positive developments are also being made. As knowledge, policy and material awareness continue to develop, the automotive industry likewise continues to ensure that the grass can truly be greener on the other side of change.

emember, back in 2015, when Ford swapped the F-150 to an aluminum body? It shook up the industry. Now, imagine that on a way, way larger scale. That’s what we’re in for. Electric vehicles, along with efforts in sustainability, vehicle longevity and always-advancing technologies, will bring a world of change to unprepared collision repairers. We’ve outlined some of the new materials popping up on the automotive scene—here are eight emerging materials that could soon be rolling into a bay near you.

CARBON FIBRE REINFORCED POLYMERS Also known as CFRP, carbon fibre-based materials are favoured in automotive applications due to their impressive strength-to-weight ratio. They are often used in body panels such as hoods, roofs, fenders, and trunk lids, helping to reduce the overall weight of a vehicle. CFRP was first used in limited applications in the 1980s and 1990s, primarily in high-performance sports cars and race cars. Its use became more widespread in the 2000s with advancements in manufacturing processes and materials technology, making it more affordable and practical for mass-produced vehicles. CFRP is also used in chassis, frames and interior components. Technicians working with carbon fibre need to be familiar with the material as it differs from traditional alloy repairs, requiring specific tools and materials. Thorough inspection for damage is crucial, including non-destructive testing methods to identify hidden damage like delamination or internal fractures. Repairers must ensure compatibility between materials used for repair and the existing structure, considering factors such as weave, resin system, and curing process to maintain structural integrity.

NEW MATERIALS

GLASS FIBRE-REINFORCED POLYMERS GFRPs are very similar to CFRPs, but are made with glass fibres as opposed to carbon fibres. It has been used in the automotive industry for even longer than CFRP, dating back to the 1950s and 1960s. GFRP is commonly used for body panels, as well as in a variety of other applications, including engine components and interior trim. Like CFRP, GFRP materials may require specialized tools to repair; that is, if the damage is repairable at all. One of the main concerns with CFRP and GFRP is that they can be more brittle than traditional materials, meaning that they are more likely to crack, fracture or shatter when subjected to impacts or stress. This can make them more difficult to repair than traditional materials, as it can be challenging to make repairs that are both strong and flexible enough to withstand further stress or impacts. Another concern with CFRP and GFRP is that they can be more sensitive to temperature and humidity than traditional materials. Exposure to high temperatures or humidity can cause these materials to warp, delaminate, or degrade over time, which can compromise the strength and durability of the repair. PROPYLENE AND ACRYLONITRILE BUTADIENE STYRENE If you’ve ever repaired a bumper, you’ve probably heard of propylene. It’s a thermoplastic used in trims and engine components. It is known to be lightweight, durable and flexible; it can be moulded into complex shapes with ease. Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is another type of thermoplastic, used in trims and dashboard instrumental panels. Like propylene, it is lightweight and flexible, with heightened impact resistance compared to traditional plastics. Polypropylene and ABS, while more easily repairable than composites, can still be challenging to repair because they require specialized adhesives and techniques to ensure a strong and lasting repair. Depending on the repair, ABS and polypropylene materials can be welded or bonded—but only by a professional that’s keenly aware of their temperature limits. Overheating these thermoplastics can be detrimental to their integrity.

Propylene is a type of plastic commonly used in automotive parts, including bumpers and fuel tanks, due to its lightweight, durable, and impact-resistant properties.

BIO-BASED MATERIALS While bio-based products—also known as au natural materials— are not commonly used for the outer bodies of cars at present, there is ongoing research on how humans can further combine Mother Nature and sustainability with the modern automobile. This includes exploration in the use of materials like natural fibres and bio-based resins which, like carbon fibres, offer high strength and stiffness, making them potentially suitable for use in the outer bodies of cars. Cellulose nanofibers are also being explored. Made from the naturally-occurring cellulose polymer found in the cell walls of plants, cellulose nanofibres are lightweight, biodegradable, and have excellent mechanical properties, making them an attractive alternative to traditional materials. Once extracted, cellulose fibres can be processed into a variety of different forms; spun into yarns or threads, woven into fabrics, or moulded into various shapes and forms. Cellulose fibres can also be chemically modified to alter their properties, such as by adding cross-linking agents to improve their strength or by introducing hydrophilic groups to make them more water-absorbent. There are also ongoing projects in how bioplastics made from renewable resources—like corn starch or sugarcane—could be used to make outer bodies of cars, and in the potential use of cork or bambootype materials for unique aesthetic and structural properties.

ADVANCED HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL

The addition of alloying elements modifies the characteristics of aluminum. For instance, pure aluminum is a relatively soft metal; addins are needed to provide higher strength for structural applications, like in modern vehicles. There are three main types of aluminum alloys used in electric vehicles:

Advanced high-strength steel, also known as AHSS, is a type of steel that has been specifically developed to offer enhanced strength, formability, and performance compared to traditional steel. AHSS is designed to provide high tensile strength while maintaining good ductility, allowing it to withstand higher levels of stress and deformation without failure. AHSS is typically characterized by its high strength-to-weight ratio, meaning it can provide significant strength and stiffness while being relatively lightweight. This makes it an attractive material for automotive applications where weight reduction is desirable without compromising safety and structural integrity. You may find AHSS applications in electric vehicle chassis, frames or in the battery enclosure, which requires super-strong protection for high-grade crash resistance. AHSS can sometimes be found in side impact beams; front and rear impact structures; b-pillars and even in roof rails. Like the aforementioned materials, AHSS can be repaired—but special considerations must be taken. AHSS has different metallurgical properties and can be sensitive to heat; care must be taken to prevent distortion in the “heat-affected zone,” or HAZ. Further, some instances of AHSS in automobiles may require a post-weld heat treatment to restore strength. It’s a process that involves controlled heating and cooling of the welded area to relieve residual stress. Like a massage for your car—which obviously needs it after a stressful collision incident.

Aluminum welding is much different than welding steel, as anyone that’s worked on a recent model-year F-150 may know. In fact, Ford has worked with aluminum sheet suppliers to create its own unique alloy mixtures that are ideal for automotive applications and closed-loop recycling efforts. Alloys have different physical properties than steel, which can affect their repairability. For example, aluminum can be more prone to cracking and distortion during the repair process than steel due to its lower ductility and higher thermal conductivity.

NANOMATERIALS Nanomaterials refer to teeny tiny parts that have been engineered or manipulated at the nanoscale, typically with dimensions between one nanometre and 100 nanometres. The use of nanomaterials in EVs allows advancements in energy storage and overall efficiency. They are used in battery tech for EVs; operations in lightweight vehicle development; fuel cells and—hugely important to EVs—thermal management units. The repair of nanomaterials in the context of collision repair for electric vehicles (EVs) is a complex and evolving area. Currently, the repair of nanomaterials in collision repair processes is not widespread or standardized, and it largely depends on the specific components and materials involved. Repairing nanomaterials requires specialized knowledge, equipment, and techniques due to their unique properties and structures at the nanoscale. In many cases, when nanomaterials are damaged in a collision, it may be more practical and cost-effective to replace the damaged components rather than attempting to repair them. For example, in the case of damage to CFRPs that contain nanosized carbon fibres, repair can be challenging and may require expertise in composite repair techniques. These repairs often involve precise curing processes and the application of specialized resins and adhesives to maintain the structural integrity of the repaired component.

HOW-TO, ON GLUE USING GLUE PULL REPAIR TO GET THE DENTS OUT By Sarah Perkins

ith the ever-increasing advancement of technological change within the automotive industry, and the growing advancement of parts and features within vehicles, sometimes, it’s just better to get back to basics. At least, this is what the growing trend of glue pull repair suggests. While not a brand new technique—having been initially developed in the United States in 1999 and commercialized in the early 2000s— increased awareness of the possibilities for dent repair that does not compromise advanced vehicle panel systems has brought glue pull repair into the spotlight. Glue pull repair is not paintless dent repair, however, it does offer many similar applications. According to Yves Robichaud, the Regional Director for Quebec at CARSTAR Canada, “dent removal using glue saves time by reducing the surface preparation stage.” Fix Network’s Regional Vice President for Quebec, Yves Roy further reflects these sentiments stating that glue pull repair is “a very interesting approach because it preserves the integrity of the parts and allows for faster execution.” The process itself involves a series of simple steps. A panel needing repair is first cleaned with a 95 percent alcohol solution before activating the glue gun to the correct temperature needed for the specific repair. Next, a flashlight blast is used to remove dust and moisture before applying the glue. Here, reusable blocks are

positioned where the dent is located (and this is much like using welded wrenches without having to remove the part or bare the surface). When the glue has dried, the process becomes a simple matter of pulling with the same type of bar used with welded keys. Once the dent is released, the glue can then be dissolved with the same alcohol solution used for the initial cleaning. Referred to by supporters of the process as the “least invasive collision repair technique,” glue pull repair offers many potential advantages over traditional systems. Since a vehicle’s original siding is left untouched throughout the entire process, the use of glue pull repair can make it easier for auto body technicians overall to detect and correct other dents in panels and siding. Similarly, because the paint and finish are preserved, and since the paint is only slightly heated during cleaning, glue pull repair can help to protect a vehicle’s anti-rust coating and e-coating applied by the vehicle’s manufacturer. While studs and wires are traditionally welded on to correct dents and often pull or rip holes into aluminum leaving additional work for auto body technicians, using glue pull repair on steel and aluminum can allow for no extra metal work areas or holes. This change is in comparison to the early development of the process in which the adhesives and tabs used were often too weak and broke during repairs.

Another potential advantage of glue pull repair is the reduced use of body fillers and paint since the process can be done without creating additional fixes. With the increasing technification of vehicles as the automotive industry races to reach electrification, glue pull repair also offers potential EV benefits and room for future growth. Vehicle panels now contain more wiring, electronics and insulation on the back, and sensors and e-coatings on the front than ever before. Through the use of glue pull repair, the delicate electronic systems found in electric vehicles can be preserved and technicians could be saved from having to open up parts of the vehicle that could otherwise interfere with computer or high-voltage systems. While there is still a ways to go in terms of testing and technique, for supporters, the current most obvious opportunity for glue pull repair is small, shallow dents on forgiving panel materials. This includes potential work on roof panels, doors, interior dashboards, hoods, deck lid flanges, among other applications. As with anything, it will take time, practice and patience before the full potential of glue pull repair is seen. However, with the use of adhesives expanding overall in the automotive industry as vehicle weights decrease and electric vehicles demand more diversified parts, the use of glue pull repair seems to be one that’s going to stick around, at least for the near future. t’s no secret that electric vehicles present a new learning curve for the automotive industry. Look at recent reports on EV adoption and repair (or even better, check out the details from Collision Repair mag’s EV Tour, supported by Fix Network) and you’ll see that electric vehicles present both a mixed bag of fear and anticipation. While the technology itself may not be new, increase in global demand and developments in said tech means that auto shops increasingly need to adjust their practices when it comes to facilitating safe repairs. However, regardless of advances in technology, the start of a decent repair job always comes back to the basics—having the right tools in your toolkit to ensure that you can get the job done. Here are some must have tools and gear if you want to have EVs in your shop, and to electrify your repair potential without putting yourself at risk of otherwise shocking safety violations.

1. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) Before getting into the heart of a repair on an electric vehicle, it’s important to make sure that your technician is properly outfitted. Because of the high-voltage systems included in electric vehicles, regular ICE vehicle PPE will not do, and instead, your technician should have access to insulated gloves rated for high-voltage systems as well as safety glasses or goggles, and other rubberized materials such as protective clothing to reduce the risk of electric shock. 2. E LECTRICAL VEHICLE SERVICE EQUIPMENT (EVSE) Alongside having the necessary safety equipment, your technician should also have access to the right tools. Using a regular hand-tool on an EV is like giving your technician a kite to fly in a thunderstorm. Instead, it is important to have access to insulated tools designed for working on high-voltage systems such as electrically insulated wrenches and sockets. Other important EVSE to consider includes an electrical metre (multimetre) for voltage and current measurements and insulated voltage detectors, as well as isolation mats and barriers to ensure that any electrical discharge does not travel to other areas of the workspace.

A fire blanket is a critical tool for any bodyshop planning to touch EVs. EVs have been known to ignite even days post-collision.

4. BATTERY COOLING SYSTEM EQUIPMENT

Alongside item number three in this list of essentials, when it comes to an electric vehicle battery, it is also necessary to have equipment for the handling and discharging of refrigerant. Since EV batteries utilize a cooling system of mounted plates to help absorb heat generated by the battery, being able to properly handle this so that the battery is not damaged by incorrect temperatures is paramount.

Ultimately, having all of the tools in the world means nothing if you don’t have the correct training and certifications. To ensure the safety of both technicians and for the vehicle itself, make sure to always follow manufacturer guidelines and recommended procedures. As Canada pushes for increasing electrification, there are more and more opportunities to seek out the training needed to become EV aware. In British Columbia, for instance, one such training outlet is EVFriendly, a program designed to help ensure that “only trained and qualified industry professionals are selling, servicing, repairing, and recycling” electric vehicles in a responsible manner. Like any vehicle, EVs come with their own set of hurdles. However, staying up to date and open to changes, and equipping yourself with both the necessary tools and knowledge will help ensure that your EV tool kit is prepared to take on any repair.

B ATTERY ISOLATION TOOLS AND BATTERY HANDLING EQUIPMENT Even though the high-voltage battery system is separate from the chassis of an electric vehicle, it is important to ensure that it has been disconnected before beginning any repairs—the same way that you would take certain precautions with the engine and batteries of an ICE vehicle. Some tools that your technician will need in order to do this step safely include, a battery service disconnect tool or high-voltage service disconnector, battery discharge tools, lockout or tagout equipment designed to isolate the high-voltage system, specialized lifting equipment for safely removing and installing high-voltage batteries and a battery caddy or cart.

It is also no secret now that when a lithium-ion battery burns, it burns long and hard. Damage to the cells in an electric battery or any leakage can allow an EV to spontaneously catch on fire days after a collision. As a result, being able to contain any and all fire risks is important not just for the repair of the individual vehicle, but also for the overall safety of a repair shop. There’s no sense seeing hard work go up in flames. Some equipment to help battle a potential blaze include having fire extinguishers rated for electric fires, fire resistant blankets or curtains for containing fires and proper ventilation and exhaust systems within a work area—specifically to disperse potentially hazardous fumes and remove exhaust gases from the repair area.

t’s no secret that electric vehicles have sparked concerns in the automotive industry when it comes to manufacturing, distribution and collision repair. From fears of electric shocks to repair preparedness, electric vehicle adoption has caused a real shockwave. One such concern that is recircuited by consumers and the industry is the belief that EV repair is more expensive than ICE models. While EVs can initially wrack up bigger repair estimates (a new Tesla can sustain more dollardamage than a $30,000 Toyota), failsafes exist to cushion costs. According to the American Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) in a 2020 study, gasolinebased cars are 3 times more likely to be totaled after an accident than an EV. ICE models were also written off after 18.4 percent of collisions versus 6.1 percent for electric vehicles.

But what happens when an EV does incur hefty repair estimates? This is what one Rivian driver asked after receiving a whopping US$41,000 repair quote for what was—in the driver’s words—a “minor fender-bender.” The answer: seek out the experts. After receiving the $41,000 quote, the Rivian driver sought alternative solutions in the form of Matt “Dent Slayer” Boyette, a dent removal expert. Upon inspection, Boyette saw that the damage to the EV extended beyond the visible dent to also include the bed, car, roof and A-pillar. Using glue-pull repair techniques to eliminate needing to remove the back glass, panoramic roof, windshield and battery pack from the vehicle, as well as having to repaint a significant portion of the vehicle’s side, Boyette was able to

successfully restore the vehicle’s original form over two days. Unlike the initial repair quote received by the driver, Boyette noted that similar repairs to the one he completed typically range between just $4,000 and $7,000. The take-away from this story? While electric vehicles may present some costly challenges, knowing how to employ strategic repair strategies such as dentless paint repair (DPR) can show that EVs are not as costly as initial fears may suggest. Even as technology rapidly changes, so too does the knowledge and skill of the automotive industry so that technicians can continue to provide smart, quick and cost-effective solutions to consumers that will leave them truly electrified.

t’s a fact—collision repair is often dangerous work. As a result, it requires the proper safety equipment to ensure that the process remains accident free. With the rise of electric vehicles and greater initiatives being made for an eco-friendly landscape, it is more important than ever for automotive technicians to be fitted for the future. Collision repairers should possess and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as approved respirator, coveralls, gloves, and eye protection. They should also refer to Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and follow

precautions for all the products they use, especially isocyanates. The area where products are used should be well ventilated. It is important to ensure that the PPE fits properly, is not torn, ripped, or defective. In addition to these precautions, it is important to remember to keep all motors inside the shop turned off and avoid using compressed air to remove dust from clothes or surfaces. If collision repair workers do not wear the proper PPE or follow proper safety protocols, they may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and materials that can cause serious health problems such

as respiratory issues, skin irritation, and cancer. They may also be at risk of accidents such as fires and explosions. When working with electric vehicles, it is important to have high-voltage gloves and to ensure that all PPE has been approved for working on high-voltage systems. Safety is first and foremost when it comes to doing repair right, and some steps that can be taken to bring awareness to workplace hazards include fostering a culture of open communication regarding safety concerns so employees feel comfortable reporting any safety hazards or issues they

The company is also working in collaboration with Dutch company, Black Bear, to create an alternative to carbon black—a material that can be used in the manufacturing of powder coatings harvested from used car tires. AkzoNobel is also continuing to work with the Dutch Advanced Research Center Chemical Building Blocks Consortium

(ARC CBBC), to develop a technology to make sustainable resins using bio-based monomers, rather than the more traditional oil-based. The future is here, and it’s earth-toned. At least, according to BASF’s most recent 2023 coatings report which revealed that the continued emergence of earthtone hues from a consumer perspective speak to an ongoing sustainable push in the world of car colours and colour systems. While automotive paint products may continue to change, and coatings may continue to become more environmentally conscious, their purpose does not—creating a full colour spectrum of cars that consumers can’t wait to drive.

One area where PDR has seen extensive growth over the last few years is in hail damage repair. While previous hail damage assessments were once done manually, today, hail-related PDR is a storm of growing and changing technologies. In a report made by Dented.ca, they note that between 2002 to 2019, “Hailstorm Alley” produced 181,030 damage claims and over $987,527,902 in damages. ith global demand for environmental awareness continuing to grow, auto recycling has had to keep pace. While the stereotypical image of the scrap yard may be a place for parts past their prime, auto recyclers know that the potential for resource conservation, energy savings and waste reduction is nothing to shake a wrench at. According to the Automotive Recyclers of Canada, an estimated 1.6 million vehicles are taken off the road each year. On average, 85 percent of a vehicle’s weight can be recycled or reused. Even with just 15 percent of that volume

going to landfills, that’s still roughly 408 kilograms of wasted material. Clearly, there’s more work to be done. Luckily, auto recyclers and the automotive recycling industry are up to the task. This year alone, the growth of electric vehicles on the road has led to an increased effort in battery and parts recycling. During Collision Repair magazine’s Toronto EV Repair Tour, Joseph Chung from Call2Recycle outlined how the notfor-profit organization is equipped to pick up and transport hazardous materials and can take steps to provide “safe logistical transport and removal.”

Similarly, in September, Li-Cycle has continued to advance its efforts in creating a continuous economy of resources. While 2022 may have presented challenges for the continuing implementation of the EASR regulation for auto recyclers (as according to the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association), horizons are a little greener as automotive recycling continues to develop. After all, it’s been nearly two million years since humans first invented the hammer. Hand tools are just as important in today’s collision repair industry as high-tech systems; they are an essential foundation for any technician and represent an extension of the technician’s handiwork.

According to this year’s U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, service technicians still rely heavily on tools such as wrenches, pliers and sockets and ratchets even as they also embrace computer-based diagnostic and electrified systems. Collision Repair magazine recently sought the opinions of Canadian shop owners, managers, apprentices, technicians and painters to get their insights on the continued use of hand tools in automotive repair. Of the auto shop owners and managers

polled specifically, 50 percent said that it was reasonable to expect a new apprentice to purchase their own tools, and only a third of those polled said that hand tools would be provided to new technicians. As a result, hand tools remain an asset. While there is a need for speed and efficiency when it comes to automotive repair, there is also a need for traditional knowledge and skill. While resistance spot welding may still be a time-tested and favoured method, advances in welding technology and tools continue to propel the industry forwards and prove that welders have both a long history of being in demand, and an equally bright future. Today, welding technology continues to evolve with advancements in materials and automation. Robotic welding systems have expanded where precision and consistency are needed in the automotive industry. With advances in ecological standards, welding has had to develop unique solutions and processes to clear environmental hurdles. One area where this is most seen in today’s market is in the continued push towards automotive electrification.

According to I-CAR, taking precautions when welding an electric or hybrid vehicle is paramount. When performing welding work on an EV, remember to disconnect both the 12-volt battery and the high-voltage battery service to avoid damaging internal battery cells (as well as a potential shock). In this regard, laser welding can help provide the speed and precision required for delicate electrical work. This year, I-CAR and the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) have joined forces to further expand welding training across Canada so that technicians are prepared for continued future changes. Through this partnership, CWB will lend the use of its training facilities in Milton, Ontario and Nisku, Alberta while I-CAR Canada will offer its nationwide training instructors.

The goal of this initiative is to ensure that welding training from I-CAR Canada will be accessible to all Canadians in a timely manner. Other training initiatives have seen augmented reality programs offering improvements in the efficiency, efficacy and safety of welding training. According to CWB’s “State of the Industry” Report released early this year, “augmented reality training and programs are thought to deliver a 34 percent increase in the number of certified welders, when compared to traditional methodology.” Change is inevitable, but as an industry that has weathered over 50 centuries, welding is one that continues to embrace and grow with the times. s I sit down to write this, I have only just returned from the spectacular SEMA Show in Las Vegas. This year was not my first time—it was my second, in fact—but it sure felt a lot different from last year. This year, the SEMA Global Media Awards team reached out to ask if I would be a judge for their annual program. The team selects a panel of international journalists—Canada, Chile, Finland and South Korea were just a few of the countries represented—who then each select a list of ten products they believe would create the most impact in their home markets.

The Global Media Awards were held the following evening, but the award recipients received manilla envelopes with the news of their victories the morning prior to the event. It was like Christmas morning hearing the buzz from the winning booths; one of my colleagues returned to our booth all giddy that one of my selections had received the envelope right in front of her eyes. We were all excited, to say the least. At the actual awards, I was pleased that almost all of my selections stopped by for a chat. It was incredible to learn of all the trial and error behind these products; the
