viewpoint
Crashing and Burning A good friend of mine who works in and around the insurance business and I were recently having lunch when the topic of conversation quickly turned to television, and in particular, a new cable program called Crash and Burn. While I won’t bore you with an in-depth plot or character summary, suffice to say that the show revolves around the insurance business, and dramatizes the shady decisions that much of the public assumes to be the modus operandi of the industry. Because the entire show revolves around the life of what appears to be a caricature of a greedy insurance adjuster, it inevitably involves a few members of the collision repair business as well. This is where the show gets interesting, and frankly disturbing, for those in this business. Far from a professional operation, the shop depicted in the show is run by members of the Russian mob, who appear to have only a passing interest in the business of collision repair. In fact, in the first half of one episode I watched, the shop crew was shown taking part in money laundering, racketeering, coercion, assault with a deadly weapon (a car), general unpleasantness, and obvious insurance fraud. I don’t want to be alarmist and suggest that this one program, whose popularity and longevity have yet to be proven, represents a clear and present danger for the collision repair business. It’s bad public relations for sure, but it would be premature to sound the alarm bells. That being said, some of the more industry-related dialogue between the insurance rep and the shop owner does play up a certain public perception about the industry that is worth confronting. I don’t think I’m going too far out on a limb when I say that the collision repair business does not enjoy the most stellar of reputations. Despite the huge strides in professionalism that the industry has seen in the last decade or so, the broader public can often be difficult to 4 Bodyshop l December 2009 l www.bodyshopbiz.com
convince. (Trust me, I know. As a journalist, I think my profession ranks somewhere between politician and snake oil salesman.) But a tough battle for hearts and minds should not be seen as a losing proposition. In fact, poor customer impressions of the industry could be your shop’s greatest advantage. Picture yourself as a customer who is brand-new to the collision industry. All you know is what you’ve seen and heard on television. When you walk into a shop for the first time and deal with its staff, one of two things will happen. Either your suspicions and prejudices will be confirmed and solidified, or they will be debunked. Take a quick look around your shop, your operation and your staff. Do they reinforce the negative stereotype, or do they bust the mould? Thankfully, a lot of shops I’ve been to of late seem to fall into the latter category, and that can only mean more positive things in the future. And, as discussed, it doesn’t take much to create that surprise experience, particularly when a first-time customer’s expectations are so low. A pleasant waiting room, a hot cup of coffee, and a genuinely friendly staff who can help sort through the process is likely all it’s going to take. It’s hardly a tall order when you think of it that way, yet it’s surprisingly lacking in some operations. In the end, if customers leave your shop feeling like they received friendly, professional service in a clean, modern, and comfortable environment, and feel as though they were treated fairly (or even a little better), their impressions of the industry as a whole might not change all that much. But, it might change enough to start chipping away at the stereotype. There’s a new year’s resolution in there somewhere. From all of us here at Bodyshop, I wish you a safe and happy holiday season. Winter Wonderland
A
lthough it hardly comes as a surprise to Canada’s drivers each year, winter’s arrival generates a considerable increase in automotive claims, says insurer Aviva. According to historical data, Aviva sees an average increase of over 38% in customer claims during the winter months compared to the rest of the year. Slippery roadways and whiteout conditions accounted for more than $38.5 million in auto-collision claim payments for Aviva Canada between December 2007 and February 2008. The first snowfall of the year historically accounts for the highest instance of collisions. “While Canadians are traditionally very experienced winter drivers, the first snowfall of the year can be extremely challenging even for the most apt motorist, says Jim Haskins, executive vice-president of claims and procurement for Aviva Canada. “Icy road conditions result in vehicle sliding and skidding, which are the most common causes of collisions particularly at the start of the season.
Results also show that of those insured, an average of 5.6% file claims in winter, compared to 4.1% filing claims during the rest of the year. Snow, sleet, and black ice often force drivers to focus on the road straight ahead. With drivers being less conscious of their surroundings to the left and right, vehicle collisions and fender-benders are far more prevalent.

Paint cars faster than ever before. DuPont was pleased to be the Gold Sponsor 2009 of the WorldSkills Car Painting Competition. We celebrate Daniel Green’s achievement, as the representative for Canada in the Car Painting Competition. Harold Then, Canadian Expert, mentored Daniel. The sixteen competitors used leading edge Cromax® Pro basecoat with a one-visit application. All results were excellent! With 1.5 coat coverage, wet-on-wet application and no flash time between coats, it’s easy to see why leading shops are making the switch to DuPont™ Cromax® Pro. BASF Automotive Refinish has announced that it has launched a new and improved website design with the same familiar name: www.basfrefinish. com. The first thing users will notice is that the new design offers a clean appearance and streamlined content. BASF also made major changes to the site navigation structure, which provides users with improved communication and greater ease of navigation. The site continues to be multilingual, featuring English, Spanish, and French language choices to better serve all North American customers. Another new feature to the site is an upgraded search interface, providing an interactive results grid allowing for column sorting and resizable columns. The company says the new site design and functionality is part of BASF’s ongoing effort to help make its customers more successful.

hat a year it has been. While it was certainly a difficult haul for many in the collision repair business, we would be remiss if we neglected to mention that 2009 was also the year that some insurance giants nearly evaporated, casualties of the sub-prime crisis in the United States. However, despite the economic turmoil, the general public kept on driving—and inevitably, kept on running into one another, which meant a steady if not overflowing stream of work for shops across Canada. That steady flow of vehicles means a steady flow of paperwork and communications between collision repair facilities and the various insurance partners they work with. While it is usually the prerogative of the insurance business to analyze the various shops looking for the top KPI scores, we here at Bodyshop Magazine feel as though there should always be some reciprocity, which is why we are proud to unveil the results of our second annual Insurer Report Card. 10 Bodyshop l December 2009 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

The Grading Process
The list of insurance providers included in the survey includes both public and private companies, and represents the companies with the largest amounts of auto insurance business in Canada. In some cases, subsidiaries and brands have been included, when it was felt the brand or subsidiary had a strong identity separate from that of its parent organization. So, for instance, you’ll see Johnson/Unifund separate from Royal & Sun Alliance. To determine the final mark in each category, each letter was assigned a numerical value on a scale of 1 to 5, and then the average (median) value was calculated. From there, the letter that corresponds to the median value appears on the report card. The survey was emailed to bodyshops during November 2009; 135 people responded. The majority of respondents were owners, presidents, or managers.
Feedback from respondents How could insurance companies improve their relationship with repairers? “Communication with the shop regarding when or if a deductible has been waived. Often the customer arrives to pick up the vehicle and tells us it’s been waived, but all the paperwork says otherwise. Now it’s a wait to call the insurance company to verify! Time frame after a supplement has been submitted.”
“Take full responsibility for all the costs associated with EJXIVQEVOIX TEVXW XLEX IMXLIV HS RSX ¿X SV JEMP TVIQEturely. Then hold the aftermarket manufacturers responsible for those costs, keeping it revenue-neutral for the shop and insurance company, and maybe the quality control for a/m parts manufacturers will improve.”
“All shops should be able to keep all their customers. It is the customer’s choice and they need to be educated on how the system works, not scared into doing something they don’t understand. We all know why certain shops are DRP, and unfortunately it has nothing to do with quality of repairs or experience. I think we have all had enough of this garbage going on.”
“Be more aware of what the independent appraisers are telling their customers. Some put down certain bodyshops or tell the customer there are extra charges if they choose a certain shop. Also it is not being made very [clear] to the customer that it is their choice where to take their vehicle, and many customers feel bullied into taking it where the insurance company says to. This creates bad blood with shops not on the preferred lists.”
“Help creating partnerships with smaller community bodyshops. We have closer relationships with local people, ensuring quality consistent repairs. We need the insurance companies to help build relationships with us.” “Bring door rate up so we can keep up on training equipment and bring in younger staff to learn the trade.” “Keep the procedure simple. Don’t hassle shops over XVMZMEP MXIQW 7LSTW NYWX [ERX XS ¿\ VITEMVEFPI ZILMGPIW and be compensated fairly.” 12 Bodyshop l December 2009 l www.bodyshopbiz.com
“Insurance companies should understand that most collision repair shops are a small business and that one person may do many jobs. We cannot function like a large corporation where each person has one or two WTIGM¿G XEWOW µ ´0IX GYWXSQIVW [LS LEZI E ¶GIVXM¿IH· WLST MR QMRH KS XS that business. THE WAY OF THE
Is Your Spray Gun Equipment Ready for Waterborne? By David Halpert
W
ith regulation deadlines looming for collision repairers to convert their facilities from solvent-based paints to low-VOC-compliant paints, you might think that many shops are scrambling in preparation for the switch. However, according to most spray gun manufacturers, it’s quite the opposite. On the whole, Canadian repair shops are more than prepared for the transition. And while some are still relying heavily on solvent-based paint, the process of converting your spray guns from one to the other is not as difficult as you might think.
Considerations and Concerns About Waterborne
The SATAjet 3000 RP spray gun with RPS cup complies with all VOC regulations with regard to solvent reduction. It contains a newly developed nozzle concept for even higher colour-match precision and homogeneous material distribution. 26 Bodyshop l December 2009 l www.bodyshopbiz.com
When word first hit that collision repair facilities in Canada would have to either upgrade or replace their existing equipment in order to be waterborne-compliant, feelings likely ranged from caution to outright panic. However, underlying this fear was a misconception that conversion meant investing large sums of money into their shop’s equipment. “[The economy] has softened, but not to the point where [collision repair owners] are not willing to make any investment in guns or equipment for their shop. The timing is kind of interesting; they all need to make the investment, they all need to get upgraded to meet the new low-VOC laws, but at the same time we’re in the middle of a depressed economy,” says Vito Gallo, a CMAX store manager in Edmonton.
Waterborne certainly has its advantages from a financial standpoint. In terms of product savings, an estimated 40% less material is required during application compared to solvent-based paints. Also, low-VOC compounds provide better coverage during application, thus requiring fewer coats overall. “Years ago guys had one gun, and then they started with a proper primer gun. Now we’ve gone from a primer gun to a basecoat gun, and now we have a clearcoat gun. Now you’ve got guns that are waterborne-specific. Again, a good painter is not going to hesitate to put [down] $500-600 just for that application,” says Tim Walker, service coordinator for White & Peters in Coquitlam, B.C. Simply buying new has its advantages (and savings) in your spray gun equipment over a more outdated model. Better atomization, more functional control on the better models, and greater advancements in nozzle technology specific to waterborne are just some of the benefits that can increase efficiency on the job. Similarly, an older-model spray gun used over hundreds, or in some cases thousands, of paint jobs can lead to poor atomization, which can result in stripping in the metallics or sagging, where one end is applying more product than the other. “The major paint brands have introduced their waterborne materials to many collision shops around Canada. Different spray guns are required for spraying solvent-borne versus
N
waterborne materials. The retrofitting of present spray equipment and/or getting new spray guns has been ongoing. We have been training painters, distributors, and paint company personnel on the subject of waterborne spraying and drying equipment for about three years now,” says Bill Burns, eastern sales manager for Eurotech Spray Products Ltd., the exclusive and independent importer and distributor of SATA Products in Canada.
The Waterborne Process
When it comes to purchasing the right spray gun equipment, the choice largely depends on the specific needs of your shop. Spray gun manufacturers have been consulting with paint companies to come up with the best recommendations for a wide variety of shop conditions. For Canada, that means working in hot dry weather, cold dry weather, as well as issues when it comes to humidity and temperature. “To get the best performance on clearcoat, that’s going to require a certain type of atomization, and that certain type may vary on the relative humidity in the shop and also the temperature. So the tech needs to be more educated on how the products perform with the nozzles that he’s putting together with them,” says Ray Odette, North American sales manager and managing partner for Anest-Iwata USA. Different waterborne paints feature different formulations, leading paint manufacturers to tailor their own application processes to enable collision repair technicians to get the best results possible using their product. Similarly, the nature of waterborne makes lowVOC compounds thicker—and, in turn, heavier—than solvent-based paints. This has led many spray gun equipment manufacturers to create and adapt their own lines of waterborne-specific guns, and some are finding it a challenge in making them compliant to as many formulations out there as possible. “On the solvent-borne you get away with an HVLP basecoat very well, but once you go to the waterborne basecoat, because it’s so viscous, it’s heavy material, the paint companies are going, ‘We don’t even want to see you using an HVLP, you have to use either “highefficiency” or what other manufacturers call a “reduced-pressure” spray gun,’ because [wa-
terborne] is thicker,” says Jeff Parker, Canadian sales manager for DeVilbiss.
Spray Gun Equipment and Technology
In the wake of many collision repair shops currently evaluating their equipment needs, Bodyshop asked major spray gun equipment manufacturers what’s new in their product lines to help ease the transition from solvent-based to waterborne. “The SATA RPS (rapid-preparation system) as a disposable cup system has really been the newest advancement from SATA in the past three to four years. That’s geared specifically for waterborne, because it’s always much easier to work with a disposable cup system when dealing with [waterborne paints] as opposed to a hard cup. Secondly, nozzle technology has advanced and evolved over the last several years as well. We’re at the point now where there are specific nozzle setups designed for certain manufacturers to spray their material in the best possible manner,” continues Burns. Anest-Iwata devotes an entire set of products to waterborne conversion, specifically the W400-LV Compliant Spray Gun, the LPH400-LV HVLP Spray Gun, and the ADG-1 Aquadry gun with adjustable dryer stand. “Firstly, the air blower ADG-1 gun is an air amplifier, [which] creates an air entrainment, essentially a tornado that comes out of the opening of that blower. And by creating that tornado we can direct the air to the surface, rather than just purely amplify it. Our reasoning for that is mostly for spot repairs. If you can direct the air at the repair area, you get the most velocity, [which] causes rapid dry,” continues Odette. “The other one is the W400-LV. That gun can be used two ways. [It] is used primary as a clearcoat gun and a waterborne-basecoat application gun when the humidity is high or medium-high and the temperature is low. “The LPH-400 creates a coarser atomization; in areas where the humidity is low and the temperature is warm you need a bigger droplet to go to the surface. The difference between waterborne paint and solvent-borne paint is with solvent-borne you have the abil-

Combined with the adjustable dryer stand, guns are easily oriented and are provided with quick couplers for fast disassembly. ity to change the reducer selection to affect the evaporation (or dry rate) of the paint, [while] with waterborne you change the evaporation rate by the atomization and the air flow.” Jeff Parker, Canadian sales manager for DeVilbiss, also noted one of the more popular products when it comes to waterborne conversion. “We’ve recently brought out the SRI-Pro, which is a high-efficiency spot repair gun. We were the first on the market with a high-efficiency spot repair gun for small damage repairs. As the paint companies have gone through their conversions, they’ve taken a liking to the high-efficiency guns, as opposed to the HVLP guns, because they break the paint up better. The waterborne materials have a viscosity that’s closer to clearcoat.” If you haven’t begun the preparations for converting your shop to waterborne, it would probably be a good idea to begin soon. Contact your local paint manufacturers and suppliers to ensure the spray equipment you get best serves your shop’s needs. B

ith the topic of waterborne paints playing such a critical role in this issue and the industry at large, we thought it would be a good opportunity to check in with the experts at I-CAR to get their take on the topic of supplemental air movement systems, and how the drying and curing game has changed with the onset of waterborne painting systems. According to I-CAR, turbulent air movement is a key to efficient drying when applying waterborne finish material. What is turbulent air? With regard to drying waterborne refinish materials, turbulent air allows moisture to rapidly escape from the surface of the panel. In a typical spray booth environment, “laminar air” is what is commonly created along the length of the panel. This type of airflow traps moisture beneath what is called a boundary layer. This is a layer of air between the fast-moving air and the painted surface of the vehicle (see Figure 1). Air movement systems add turbulence to the airflow, breaking up the boundary layer and allowing moisture to escape. To generate the turbulent air, supplemental air movement systems are needed. These systems are available as wall-mounted blower towers, hand-held venturi blowers (air multipliers), or ceiling fans. Each system is uniquely designed to create turbulent air. The system chosen depends on personal preference and budget.
Wall-Mounted Systems
Figure 3
Wall-mounted systems typically have a total of four towers, positioned in each corner of the spray booth. The tower is equipped with multiple venturi-style nozzles that direct forced air onto the vehicle surface. The nozzles are adjustable so the air can be directed toward various locations along the vehicle’s surface to achieve the most efficient drying (see Figure 2). For this article, we will use the QAD system
from Junair as an example of a wall-mounted air movement system. While this subject was covered in the Waterborne Products, Systems, and Application (REF07) program, I-CAR has recently installed a QAD system with the help of Junair, providing a more detailed look into the installation and operation of this system. The Junair QAD system now joins the AcceleCure ceiling fan system by Garmat, and the SATA hand-held venturi blowers as supplemental air movement systems in the I-CAR Tech Centre spray booth.
QAD System
This particular system uses filtered, ambient air to create forced air in the spray booth. The filters are located in the intake plenum where they provide the system with clean air (see Figure 3). The air-supplying units distribute the forced air using a blower motor located on top of the spray booth. The forced air is transferred to the towers via four air ducts, one for each of the towers. On this system, the blower nozzles on the towers are located behind an automatic door that opens for operation and closes when the system is turned off. This allows the nozzles to be protected from overspray during painting operations, as well as reduce the dirt buildup that can contaminate finishes. There is also slight positive pressure when the doors are closed to prevent contaminants from getting behind the closed door. The doors are pneumatically operated through the control panel and the speed at which the doors open can be adjusted on the bottom of the air cylinders. The system can also be used during the spray booth bake cycle to ensure heat is evenly distributed throughout the spray booth, similar to a convection-type oven.
Installation
The installation procedure for this type of air movement system is fairly straightforward. As

ionizes the airflow directed at the vehicle. This system uses a Static Neutralization bar that is fitted to the tower between the two columns of nozzles, to reduce the static charge.
Proper Use of Wall-Mounted Systems
Figure 6
mentioned earlier, the towers are mounted at or near the corners of the spray booth. Through-holes must be drilled into the side of the spray booth to accommodate the ductwork that transports the filtered air to the air supplying towers (see Figure 4). The motor assembly is mounted on top of the spray booth and draws air from inside the spray booth. The air filter is installed in the spray booth between the ceiling filter and the roof of the spray booth. The filter is designed to remove particulates up to 10 microns. Almost all spray booth designs can be retrofitted with this type of air movement system. One common issue is where to locate the towers. Personnel doors, lights, and equipment can hinder the location. The most common solution is to simply move the location of the tower away from the hindrance, but still keeping it near the corner of the spray booth. The nozzles can be adjusted to compensate for the tower position. Common installation time is about 10 to 20 hours. To help accommodate the collision repair facility’s working schedule, some installation crews work when the facility is closed for the day for minimal workflow disruption.
Static Neutralization
A vehicle carries a relatively high static charge, particularly plastic parts such as bumpers. Static electricity in the form of electrostatic attraction or repulsion generates dust contamination and other paint defects. To compensate for this, this system is equipped with an option that 30 Bodyshop l December 2009 l www.bodyshopbiz.com
To use the wall-mounted system, the spray booth must be turned on. When the power switch on the control panel is engaged, the system will open the doors to the units and engage the blower (see Figure 5). The air velocity may not be adjustable. Depending on the options, the system may include a feature that can be used to control the spray booth temperature while in flash-off mode. This feature turns on with the power switch. For this feature to be operational, the bake switch for the spray booth must be wired into the control panel.
Maintenance
Like every forced-air drying system, maintenance is key to optimum performance of the wall-mounted system. Some key maintenance items include replacing the air intake filters periodically to ensure proper airflow. Junair recommends that the filter tubes be changed at the same time as the intake filter. Other periodic maintenance items include but are not limited to: • wiping down the nozzles and tower. • functionally testing the system. • cleaning pneumatic systems related to the door opening system. • calibrating the temperature controller. • verifying nozzle velocity. Check with the manufacturer for specific service schedules. In addition to wall-mounted air movement systems, other types of systems include hand-held air multipliers and high-speed and adjustable ceiling fans.
Hand-Held Air Multipliers
Hand-held air multipliers may be available with adjustable stands (see Figure 6). They employ the venturi effect to multiply volume/ velocity, which can be up to 12 times the air-
Figure 7
Figure 8
flow from the compressed air system. This particular system is generally a less expensive option compared to ceiling fans and wallmounted towers. Hand-held air multipliers make use of compressed air, and therefore may require a compressor upgrade to handle increased cfm depending on how many multipliers are used. If the compressor is able to handle the increased cfm, the compressor may run longer to keep up with the increased demand.
Ceiling Fans
Spray booth ceiling fans use clean ambient air to brake up the laminar airflow around the vehicle (see Figure 7). This system consists of bladed fans with safety cages, which are mounted through the ceiling in the centre of the spray booth. The fan motors are mounted outside of the spray booth and may have to be routed around the fire-suppression system in the spray booth. During installation, the fans are evenly spaced in the spray booth, which may require modification of the air plenum in the ceiling. During operation, the fan speed can be adjusted using the control panel located outside of the spray booth (see Figure 8). Proper fan speed depends on the technician’s preference. Additional information on ceiling fans, hand-held air multipliers, and wall-mounted units is available through the I-CAR live Waterborne Products, Systems, and Application (REF07) training program.
Conclusion
For the refinishing department to run efficiently, quick dry time of a waterborne finish is key. There are a number of options available including hand-held air multipliers, ceiling fans, and wall-mounted air movement systems. Each of these systems can be installed with little to no change in the design of a spray booth, and little disruption to workflow. Which system will work best for a collision repair facility depends on the needs of each repair facility. For more information on each of these types of systems, contact your local vendor. B

Promise Ahead In 2010 At the end of a turbulent year like 2009, it is easy to get pessimistic about the future. But from my vantage point, there is actually much to be optimistic about in the coming year. For one—and it is a big one—we can finally look forward to an end to the great conversion debate. It has been, for some, an excruciating period both in terms of decisions to be made and money to be spent. To mangle an old phrase, “Never before have so few given so much for so little.” Essentially, while there is much in the way of benefit from the conversion to waterborne systems in terms of health and safety and an inescapable lessening of the environmental footprint, from a business and technical aspect it’s really a zero-sum game: shops that were great and effective before are great and effective now, while those that struggle will probably struggle in the future. The industry may smell better, but it is not a changed industry. The issues of profitability, door rates, technical and business training, customer relations, and the ever-changing vehicle landscape remain much as they did before. Or, at least, the changes that we have seen have been precipitated less by the greening of the products we use than by the shock that financial markets took more than a year ago. The impact of this is seen in consumers’ reluctance to make a claim for small repairs and, paradoxically, in their increasing need to make the big claim. In both cases, the downward pressure on prices and the dreaded deductible negotiation have made life on the front counter, the back office, and on the shop floor tougher over the past year. Still, as I said, there is much reason for optimism. The drop in new car sales and the need to seek business has caused a necessary shift in the decision-making of at least some players. In a sense, the gap between production shops and smaller, more acutely customer-paid shops is growing. Big shops get bigger, but smaller shops can get more profitable too, if they’re going after the right customers. Not long ago I was reminded of the fact that it is the bottom line, not the top line, of a business that really matters, and this was in the context of not always knowing just how the “other guy” is doing. If you saw a bodyshop down the street from you shrink in size, and take in only a few cars a month, it would not be unreasonable to assume that the business was struggling. But what if you found out that the owner had carved out a healthy little niche in specialty cars, with little in the way of staffing and overhead to carry, leaving him with a better monthly operating profit and little in the way of headaches when business got light? Not that getting big and profitable isn’t good too, but it is different. And, while I always have a soft spot in my heart for the small shop since they’re often the home of real artisans who will amaze with their skill and creativity, the larger shops will continue to be innovators in their own way, because they are driven by necessity and because they have the resources to. Together though, the entire industry has placed itself in a better position to handle the changing market than it did when it entered 2009. Less panic and more determination is clear in every conversation I have had recently. So in this spirit I wish a Happy New Year to you and yours. Be good, be safe. B Andrew Ross aross@bodyshopbiz.com
