viewpoint

EDITOR J.D. Ney 416-510-6839 jdney@bodyshopbiz.com

Renewable Resources In a recent conversation with a newly minted lawyer (a friend, not a lawyer I required, I assure you), the conversation turned to the various stages of his professional career progression, and how that system works. Suffice to say, it’s intensive and requires quite a lot of hard work and dedication, but something more significant caught my attention. At the time, I was reading through notes from the Montreal edition of the CCIF, and had once again been shocked by the numbers presented by Jennifer Steeves of the CARS Council, which found that some 60% of employers saw a major shortage looming for paint and body technicians, while almost a third (31%) of shops across the country don’t employ a single apprentice. Backing up the CARS research with our own poll, in this issue, you’ll find the results of our annual outlook survey, and I can tell you that a significant portion of our respondents told us that “finding good people,” or some version of that sentiment, was the most serious challenge they faced in 2010, and were likely to continue facing in 2011. Shifting back to my barrister buddy, it occurred to me that this particular issue is completely foreign in the legal world. You won’t find a chorus of law firms bemoaning the lack of quality talent, because the legal profession takes its apprenticeship program very seriously. The bigwigs in the glass towers across Canada know that employees must be constantly replaced simply due to attrition and retirement, not to mention organic growth in business, and so the legal community has a formalized process to deal with its new blood: one summer, mid-law school, spent as a summer intern (coop student), and at least another year articling with a firm before becoming certified and joining that firm as an associate. Most importantly, though, this isn’t a game that some 60% of law firms play. In that community, they all play, because they know the value and

frankly the necessity of training their replacements in the business. In short, you don’t see law firms complaining about a lack of young talent, because they don’t have that problem. Now, some might argue the legal community has a number of advantages that the collision repair industry does not, namely schools pumping out eager employees, along with mountains of cash to develop and deploy these kind of programs, and to a certain extent it’s an argument worth having, but the case isn’t as strong as you’d might think. While Canadian trade programs don’t churn out nearly the same number of painters as law schools do lawyers, most schools will tell you that they’re packed to the brim with eager kids, excited about a career in the industry. They’ll also tell you how difficult it is to get those kids into apprenticeship programs, or to ensure a student has the opportunity to practice the trade once he or she has finished school. In short, while the collision repair industry has taken the attitude that the only employee worth hiring is a 40-year-old technician with 20 years’ experience, the legal profession has placed immense value on ensuring that anyone entering the business, with any firm, has the appropriate core competencies to be a valuable employee. In the end I realize, of course, that a far-reaching “articling”-style program is not likely to materialize in the collision repair industry. It would take a decade to establish, cost millions of dollars, and require the involvement of each and every shop, working together to solve a looming crisis. That’s simply impossible…isn’t it? Happy 25th, Motive Action

O

n Wednesday, November 3, close to 200 guests, alumni, and representatives from the automotive industry and the Alberta government gathered to applaud the work Motive-Action has done in the past 25 years. Motive-Action is a unique, not-forprofit organization that was co-founded in 1985 by executive director Karl Herzog. Karl recalls, “My brother Michael and I observed young people who wanted to work in the automotive industry but couldn’t get or keep a job. We developed our program to provide the means to help.”

Located in Calgary, Motive-Action provides auto repair, auto body, and heavy-duty mechanical training for youth and new Canadians who face barriers to meaningful employment. In addition to workplace automotive skill training, clients receive upgrading in language and interpersonal skills. During the 25th anniversary celebration, Karl Herzog recognized the many people that have helped MotiveAction grow and thrive. Both the federal and provincial governments provide performancebased funding for every student that graduates. Alberta Employment and Immigration representative Caroline Fairbrother spoke about the staggering success rate of the students they support.

Rising in the East Newfoundland’s Collision Clinic has been named Outstanding Business of the Year by the Mount Pearl Chamber of Commerce. Collision Clinic was honoured with the coveted award at the Best in Business Awards Banquet. “We were nominated along with other very fine local businesses, so we were especially proud to be presented with this award,” said Collision Clinic owner Glenn Hickey in his acceptance speech at the banquet. “Collision Clinic evolved from humble beginnings, when I converted my parents’ cow barn into a four-car bodyshop in 1978. I pass on full credit to Sharon Wells and the focused and passionate staff at Collision Clinic. Their relentless pursuit of cutting-edge technology, along with their passion for continuous improvement, has enabled me to far exceed the vision I set out to accomplish in those early days. I am so very proud of them.” 6 Bodyshop l December 2010 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

Instructor John Johnson explained, “Over 75% of our students graduate from the Motive-Action 24-week preapprenticeship program. In the past 25 years, more than 1,000 students have successfully completed this program and have moved on to become journeymen and skilled labourers in the automotive industry.” A number of alumni spoke about the dramatic impact Motive-Action has had on their lives, creating the opportunity to be employed in a field they love. Some now own their own shops. Motive-Action also has an annual fundraising event called Driving Futures, which garners significant community support to cover capital expenses. Sustainable Solvents

he Valspar Corporation is expanding its automotive refinish product platform to include a comprehensive line (from primer to clear coat) of low-volatileorganic-compounds (VOC) solvent-based paint products. “Meeting new air quality standards is a key requirement for many leading bodyshops,” says Jeff Potter, marketing director, Valspar Automotive Refinish. “We are pleased to introduce a full line of solvent-based low-VOC components. Our system allows bodyshops to meet air quality standards while delivering high quality performance.” The Valspar Low VOC System features the company’s signature Clean Air formulation with significantly reduced VOCs. This system allows auto bodyshops to switch to a solvent-based option with an improved environmental profile, without having to invest in new equipment. The new system delivers the same level of performance and ease of application as traditional refinish coatings and helps bodyshops achieve their environmental requirements. Application techniques, time, and coating coverage for the Valspar Low VOC System are the same as traditional solvent-based automotive refinish products.

Auto Theft Laws Get Tougher

C

anada has toughened up auto theft laws, including mandatory jail time for repeat offenders. Bill S-9, the Tackling Auto Theft and Property Crime Act, provides tough action on property crime, including the serious crimes of auto theft and trafficking in property that is obtained by crime. The legislation will receive royal assent in the coming days. “Auto theft costs Canadians over $1 billion each year and helps make organized crime profitable,” said Rob Nicholson (P.C., Niagara Falls), Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, in a

statement. “Our government has taken strong action to protect the property of Canadians, and ensure our communities are not endangered by the reckless driving which often results from auto theft.” Trafficking in stolen property, along with drug trafficking and fraud, has been identified as a primary activity for organized crime. Auto theft affects many individual Canadians and businesses, whether through financial loss or as a result of reckless behaviour and highspeed chases. Once this new law comes into force, law enforcement and the courts will have better tools to tackle auto theft and the entire range of activities involved in the trafficking of all types of stolen or fraudulently obtained property. The new legislation includes provisions that: • create a separate offence of “theft of a motor vehicle,” which carries a mandatory prison sentence of six months for conviction of a third or

subsequent offence when the prosecutor proceeds by indictment; • establish a new offence for altering, destroying, or removing a vehicle identification number (VIN); • make it an offence to traffic in property obtained by crime; and • make it an offence to possess such property for the purpose of trafficking. In addition, the Tackling Auto Theft and Property Crime Act will allow the Canada Border Services Agency to detain suspected stolen property before it is exported from the country, which will reduce the exportation of stolen vehicles from Canada by organized crime. “The best way to combat gangs and organized crime is to tackle the illicit activities which make these groups profitable,” said Minister Nicholson. “This legislation does just that and will play an important part in our ongoing commitment to the safety and security of communities across Canada.” The Tackling Auto Theft and Property Crime Act will come into force at a time to be determined, in order to allow the provinces and territories time to prepare for the changes. For an online version of the legislation, visit www.parl.gc.ca.

AkzoNobel and Toyota Announce Partnership

kzoNobel Car Refinishes Americas and Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. have agreed to combine experience and resources surrounding process improvement methods for collision repair operations. The newly created program will be known as Toyota Production System for Collision (TPS-C). The program is currently being launched in the U.S. only. The endeavour weaves the ProcessCentred Environment methodology, launched by AkzoNobel in 2008, and the experiences of Toyota’s Production System, into a cohesive design. The program was introduced to approximately 100 Toyota collision centre personnel at a preliminary training event in August at the Toyota Certified Collision Centers 8 Bodyshop l December 2010 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

National Performance Group Meeting in San Antonio, Tex. Fifteen pilot locations have been selected. Attendees will go through a series of classes and onsite process improvement activities beginning in November 2010. At full implementation, the TPS-C initiative will deliver training and consulting services to all Toyota and

Lexus Certified Collision Centres to ensure uniform practices. “It is difficult to pick up any publication today without seeing an article as to how Lean, Six Sigma, or Theory of Constraints is being employed in collision repair,” notes Roger Foss, national field support manager for Toyota Motor Sales USA. “Each of these concepts has its merits; but they are just that, concepts. The TPS-C program is unique in that we have transformed concepts into realworld actions and tools, resulting in a clearly defined methodology specifically for collision repair. We have decided that as a longstanding business partner, AkzoNobel had the resources to help us implement our shared vision of process improvement.”

Continued Growth for Fix Auto

ix Auto has announced the addition of three new locations to its network roster: Fix Auto Sarnia, Fix Auto Vars, and Fix Auto Rockland. Fix Auto Sarnia has been in operation since 1991. “We are looking forward to being part of the Fix Auto network,” says Tony Carletti, owner. “Joining the Fix Auto network will allow us to take our values further and be recognized on a higher level. We have always prided ourselves in providing superior customer service; this is what has established us as a reputable shop in our community.” Fix Auto Vars owner Nick Damato is no stranger to the Fix Auto network, as his son, Dino Damato, owns the Fix Auto location in Dorval, Quebec. “Before joining Fix Auto, we were well aware of the advantages that being part of a larger network such as Fix Auto can bring,” says Damato. “I have seen the results at Fix Auto Dorval and am very impressed.”

The latest location to join the network, Fix Auto Rockland, is owned by Michel Vinette, who has worked in the bodyshop industry since 1982. The location features a newly renovated expansion to better service its continuously growing customer base. “We are very proud of our newest three shops,” said Mike Kaplaniak, director of operations for Fix Auto Ontario, Alberta, and Atlantic Canada. “All three shops deliver great quality work that meets Fix Auto standards and are in locations that allow the Fix Auto network to offer its customers complete provincial coverage.”

illennials, those born between 1980 and 1994 and representing the largest generation of car drivers since the 1960s, have been hard hit by the recession and are increasingly turning to do-it-yourself (DIY) maintenance and repair to keep their autos running, according to recent automotive aftermarket research by The NPD Group, a leading market research company. A store-level analysis of sales from over 18,000 U.S.-based auto parts stores tracked by NPD’s Aftermarket Industry Monitor showed that stores in a cluster identified as having a high Millennial population achieved higher dollar sales per store in several key application parts categories. Overall dollars per store for total hard parts in the high Millennial cluster were 11% higher than in the cluster of stores with a low Millennial population. In addition to hard parts, the high-cluster stores did better in light application categories like filters and spark plugs. The analysis, which was based on retail channel sales reflecting higher levels of DIY activity among Millennials, also found higher sales of hand cleaners and hand tools in high Millennial stores. “Having lived through tough economic times and being one of the age groups most impacted by it, Millennials may remain cost-conscious for a long time and, as a result, could represent a new era of DIY repair,” says David Portalatin, industry analyst for NPD’s automotive aftermarket business unit. “Gaining a better understanding of what Millennials are likely buying today will enable marketers to position their brands, stores, and services for what could be a lifetime of car care purchasing by 65 million influential young drivers.”

AkzoNobel on sustainability

Trusting

the Process

A step-by-step approach to a sustainable future By J.D. Ney

W

elcome to the third installment in our ongoing series on sustainability, in partnership with AkzoNobel. Over the past two issues, we’ve explored the early stages of the program, and spoken to shop owners like Ron Reist in Kitchener, Ontario, and Doug Roberts in Barrie, who have taken their first steps along the road to a more holistic approach to sustainability. However, after many conversations across the industry, it’s increasingly clear that many shop owners and managers still ascribe to a relatively narrow interpretation of the term “sustainability.” Sustainability is a term that’s been co-opted by the go-green movement primarily to define environmental stewardship and eco-friendly practices. However, as both Reist and Roberts intimated in previous articles, “going green” is only part of a much broader equation that, according to AkzoNobel, also must include sustainable social and profitability elements as well. To help expand on the notion of an allencompassing definition of sustainability as defined by the program champions at AkzoNobel, Bodyshop magazine turned to Michel Guerette, Market Services Manager – Canada, Akzo Nobel Coatings Ltd., to clear up some of the misconceptions surrounding his company’s sustainability mission. Guerette offers a more complete look at the inner workings of the company’s robust program, from its previously mentioned sustainability scan, to the continuing goal to establish a Process-Centred Environment. “AkzoNobel’s sustainability initiative is broader in scope than simply the environment and our own sustainability. Without sustain10 Bodyshop l December 2010 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

able customers, how can we expect to be sustainable ourselves?” asks Guerette. “The Bodyshop Sustainability Scan we have developed focuses on three categories: People (Social), Profit (Economic), and Planet (Environment)—the same categories measured in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index that we as a company strive to excel at.” According to Guerette, the first category, People, is about teaching owners and managers that attracting, developing, and maintaining talent is a cornerstone of a sustainable business. The program focuses on areas such as encouraging cross-training to handle the variability in work demands, creating a career path to minimize turnover and sustain the business for the long term, and applying 5S principles (outlined in Bodyshop’s October edition), “where the environment works for you,

not against you, so that employees can work in a better and safer workplace.” In terms of the all-important Profit category, Guerette notes, “Without satisfied customers there is no profit, nor a sustainable business. Tracking CSI is unquestionable, but more important is the desire to understand both the stated and unstated needs of customers. Another key element in the process is our focus on a broader definition of ‘customer’ that incorporates all stakeholders, internal and external—which is impacted by, and influences, the efficacy of the repair process. Waste reduction initiatives within the four walls of a repair centre are foundations to sustainability, but waste reduction throughout the entire value stream offers breakthrough sustainability for all stakeholders.”

AkzoNobel on sustainability

Finally, the “Planet” category, the area most commonly linked to the general notions of sustainability, is about much more than blue boxes and waterborne conversions. “Waterborne paint brings a positive impact on environmental sustainability, but in Canada, it’s no longer a competitive advantage, but a legislated requirement to be in the game,” says Guerette. “[Our program] brings to the forefront other areas of environmental sustainability, such as streamlining material assortments, abiding by equipment maintenance schedules, and investing in more efficient equipment. A good example of the latter is the recent trend towards higher-efficiency lighting, which not only offers energy efficiency but creates a better working environment, where defects can be minimized, leading to reduced costs and improved cycle time and quality.” Most importantly to all three categories, Guerette says the Process Centred Environment plays an important role in helping shops not only to improve their sustainability score, but also to provide for their overall sustainability. “The fact is, there are more shops in the marketplace than there is business volume to sustain them all,” he says. “The continuing trend towards collision avoidance and prevention systems will constrain demand, while on the supply side, the increasing complexity of vehicles and emphasis on the need for streamlined operations is putting added pressure on shops, such as increased training expenses and capital investment, which threatens profitability and sustainability. Shops with the passion, desire, and drive to adjust their business to the ever-changing environment need to re-assess their business model. AkzoNobel’s Process Centred Environment (PCE) Program is a continuous improvement initiative developed to enable our key customers to create a sustainable competitive advantage focused on increasing customer satisfaction, reducing waste in the repair process, and enabling sustainable profitability. Our customers transform their business into a Process Centred Environment by utilizing a series of interlocking building blocks, meant to assist them in expending the right amount of energy, resources, and materials to allow them to deliver the remanufactured vehicle at the right time, quality, and cost.” According to Guerette, those building blocks are based on five critical phases,

which the team at AkzoNobel will help shops navigate. “Typically, a shop will start with the Explore phase,” he says. “It’s basically an opportunity for owners and managers to think about what challenges they face, and make a go-or-no-go decision on moving forward with the program. We do this in a classroom or a conference setting, where they have an opportunity to get some feedback from shops that are already working though the process. It then becomes a matter of getting started on the 5S journey, which serves as a great way to quickly measure a shop’s ability to introduce and adapt to change. It assesses the culture of the organization.” Once a shop has cleared the first phase of the Process Centred Environment conversion, with its 5S guidelines, Guerette says the next step is Expand. “In this step, shop owners choose to move forward with particular building blocks in specific departments. For example, if you find a group of painters is really enthusiastic about the process, then you move forward by getting them more involved and work on details in that area.” The next step in the AkzoNobel program is Integrate, a process through which an owner ensures that any department that has forged ahead with the PEC program isn’t doing so at the expense of the ultimate goal. “This step is really looking at the idea that there are no department or local optimums, but that any changes you make are to the advantage of the entire organization,” says Guerette. “At the same time, it’s also about empowering staff to champion some of these programs, and take ownership of them.”

Finally, says Guerette, comes the Continue phase. “PCE is really a journey, so the process of improvement never really ends, and that’s what the Continue phase is all about. At this stage, it’s about learning, and finding new ways to improve on what you’ve already accomplished, and also to expand outside of your own four walls. It’s great to start, but we get better results when we start to involve our business partners too.” But can this process work? Well, Guerette is convinced that it does, and not just quantitatively, where he says shops that are midstream are showing marked improvements in the key metrics of cycle time, velocity of sales, and profitability, but also in qualitative terms as well. “I think even more important for our bodyshop partners are the qualitative aspects of the equation as well, which we don’t pay enough attention to,” he says. “We’ve got some customers who are three or four years into the process, who started with the thought that they were going to have to get out of the industry, and because the process pushes things like employee empowerment and a defined process for every aspect of the shop’s operation, their stress levels are way down. They’re actually spending time with their families, instead of micromanaging their business.” Clearly more than recycling programs and new paint, sustainability as defined by AkzoNobel is about much more. With a focus on your employees and your community, your profitability and yes, the broader environment, the AkzoNobel program is sustainability, version 2.0.

hile we’d like to start this year’s edition of the outlook survey article with an exuberant “what a difference a year makes,” after polling the industry from coast to coast, the numbers and the responses simply don’t warrant enthusiasm. While technically speaking, the recession is a distant memory, many shop owners are still feeling the effects of a dour economy. damage, insurance companies being faster to hit the writeoff button, or even something as simple as weather patterns, the overall mood of the industry appears to be cautiously optimistic at best. What’s more, shop owners continue to feel the squeeze of tight profit margins for the year, particularly as the final

stages of the government’s ban on waterborne paint comes into its final stages of implementation and the capital expenditures of a 2010 conversion act as an anchor on the ledger. Our annual Outlook Survey seems to reflect those moods. But on the positive side, when asked whether owners and managers thought 2011 would be better than 2010, a slim majority (51.7%) felt that it would be (Fig. 1). However, as is becoming common these days, there is no clear, overwhelming consensus, as the survey also showed that 48.3% felt that 2011 would be no better, or even worse, than an admittedly difficult 2010. Perhaps more telling in terms of confidence levels throughout the industry, however, comes when the question is shifted to capital expenditures. Much like the broader consumer confidence surveys circulated by Stats Canada, shop owners’ plans to make capital investments in 2011 Continued on page 14

appear to be something of a “money where your mouth is” proposition. As in years past, the results are conflicting. While almost half of respondents said that they predicted brighter times in 2011, only 8.6% of those who took the survey said that they would definitely be upgrading their equipment in 2011 (Fig. 2). Now, there are a number of possible explanations for that low result, not least of which is the fact that many shops have significantly upgraded their paint equipment over the last 18 months in order to comply with the new waterborne legislation. However, over 63% of respondents say that they will either take a wait-and-see approach, or simply make do with what they’ve already got in 2011. In the end, it appears that the collision repair industry remains in flux in the first post-recession year, and moving forward into the next decade. While attitudes certainly were not as dour in this year’s edition overall—last year, some owners suggested “quitting the business” as their strategy suggestion—this year’s crop of responses revealed some significant and lingering concerns. Employee attraction and retention remains a constant challenge; accelerating vehicle technology means continuous training demands; and when the surveys were anonymous, the opinions expressed regarding the insurance business were decidedly less cordial than during the discussion sessions at a recent CCIF meeting. However, there is also a marked sense of optimism, with owners encouraging industry colleagues to improve customer service, go the extra mile, and modernize business practices. It’s that positive outlook and constant drive for improvement that drive the industry’s potential for a rebound in 2011. Well, that and some snow in Eastern Canada.

All Smiles as ASRW

Takes First Solo Flight By Andrew Ross

n the weeks since Automotive Service & Repair Week (ASRW) concluded its first freestanding event, organizers say it continues to receive positive reviews from participants across the industry, retaining its position as a bellwether and benefactor of the industry. ASRW, consisting of the International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) and the Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS), was held Oct. 10-13, 2010, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. “We extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the loyal vendors, attendees, speakers, participants, and supporters for a solid 2010 event,” said Ron Pyle, ASA president and chief staff executive, at the conclusion of the event. “Thank you for the team effort that went into this year’s event. We look forward to another great event in 2011.” “I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of attendance. Monday was a rush of people who were really interested in seeing and purchasing our products, and the rest of the show continued to bring serious buyers improving or adding facilities,” said NACE exhibitor Tim Morgan, CELETTE/Electron, Inc. “Both 16 Bodyshop l December 2010 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

Celette and Elektron made sales on the floor, and have quality leads that will turn into sales right away and in the coming months. Plus, it is always good to network and spend time with existing customers and other vendors. After all the hype over the date changes and timing format, I believe NACE was a success for us.” “What a wonderful show! Coming back to NACE allows our Preval Spray Team a chance to reconnect with bodyshop owners all over the country,” commented NACE exhibitor Sammy Averbuch, Preval Sprayers. “Being a ‘Made in America’ product, we appreciate a trade show like NACE, particularly in a city like Las Vegas.” In spite of the recession and the uncertainty that repairers and their suppliers are facing, NACE and CARS have survived and will continue their contributions to the industry. ASRW 2010 brought a total attendance of 16,289 members of the automotive repair and service industry together for its week of events. “Allstate Insurance Company and Sterling Autobody Centers led several NACE educational seminars throughout the week because of our strong desire to give

back to the industry,” stated Dan Risley, staff claims analyst, Allstate Insurance Company. “I have been attending NACE since 1990 and have always enjoyed the inspirational general session speakers. However, this year was different. Kelly McDonald was not only a terrific speaker, but she gave real-world information and tactics about running one’s business in today’s diverse marketplace. I left the session with quite a few takeaways and a breadth of knowledge,” said ASRW speaker Karen Fierst, KerenOr Consultants. The Automotive Service Association (ASA) will also continue its contributions to the industry. Just since 2004, more than 85,000 hours of instruction have been delivered to collision, mechanical, and service repair professionals. Additionally, organizations such as the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF), the Collision Repair Education Foundation, the Women’s Industry Network (WIN), the National Auto Body Council (NABC), and the Automotive Management Institute (AMI), as well as important initiatives like the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) and the Database Enhancement Gateway (DEG), are worthy recipients of financial support in recent years, with funds made available through revenues generated by NACE and CARS. Preparations for ASRW 2011 are well underway, with commitments for the following key events at next year’s show: ASRW Industry Forum, a general session with relevant business content; a NACE Town Hall meeting; and an Association Leadership Summit. Additionally, NACE and CARS expect to release new show websites within the next few weeks.

insurer survey 2010

The 2010 Insurer’s Report Card

Hostile Environment Our annual audit of the insurance industry finds the two sides farther apart. By J.D. Ney about alignment, cooperation, and mutual respect, private attitudes amongst many owners and managers across the country have clearly soured over the course of the past year. And why might this be? Well, the survey stats, along with its expanded written responses, show that some of the age-old issues are a lingering concern. Trouble over door rates, appraiser overrides, and DRP arguments are still prevalent; but more than anything, collision repair professionals are citing a perceived lack of dialogue as their chief concern. As the warden in the 1967 classic Cool Hand Luke famously opined: “What we have here is a failure to communicate.” The chart also bears this out. While most of the companies in our survey—and by definition, the insurance industry as a whole—receive solid if not universally exemplary marks in a majority of categories, most of the lower marks seem concentrated in the areas that After receiving an overwhelmingly positive review from the collision repair industry in 2009, it appears this past year that a different sentiment has overtaken the relationship between insurers and repairers. While 2009 was not a pretty year in the financial services sector, it wasn’t an easy year for the collision repair business either. But, despite the economic challenges, the two sides appeared to play nice, said the right things about one another at industry forums, and the scores on our annual survey were higher than they had been in the past. However, a marked shift in attitude took hold in 2010. Across the board, scores were significantly lower, with many companies registering the lowest marks in years, and only a handful of outfits registering straight As. What’s more, at a time when all of the popular rhetoric surrounding this critical relationship seems to be 18 Bodyshop l December 2010 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

deal with direct communication with individual shops. Interestingly, the question that received the lowest overall marks (by number of shops that scored below an A rating) asked: “How would you rate each insurance company on clear, consistent communication with repairers?” In fact this category was only matched by the results on payment practices, which one might assume would be the perennial handsdown champion of repairer grief. Whatever the reasons, the shift in sentiment over the course of a year is significant. With insurance companies and collision repair shops inexorably linked, a working relationship based on mistrust and simmering hostility is clearly not the ideal way to enter the next decade. And, while it should be duly noted that there were some insurers who received a stellar report card in 2010, there is also, quite evidently, room for improvement.

Getting the Message

Just like last year, we asked you what you thought insurance companies could do to improve the relationship between the insurance and the collision repair communities. Here are some of your suggestions: “If insurance companies started to believe that repairers are interested in quality repairs first, then profit, they would be less suspicious of every little suggested repair.” “Adapt estimating and repair procedures / guidelines that will work for all insurance companies; this would help the DRP shops to write a cleaner, more accurate sheet.” “Schedule regular meetings to find ways to collaborate and improve two-way communication and service to our joint clients.” “Have consistent communication with repair shops. We are the eyes when doing appraisals, and we appraise based on what we see. There is always a lack of communication, in terms of deductibles, for example. If deductibles are waived, please just let the shop know, before the vehicle is [released] for pickup. It makes shops look like fools for trying to collect it. Those adjusters need to be in constant communication with the shops.”

software

Get With The Program Bodyshop asks the experts about business management software By J.D. Ney

F

or many shop owners, the newfangled world of shop management software can be daunting. It’s a complicated salad of programs, updates, training, e-training, and general computer literacy. However, while some owners toss up their hands at the whole process, software makers have been hard at work making their programs not only more intuitive, but also more focused on helping you boost profitability and efficiency. To help clear up some misconceptions as well as some of the potential pitfalls, Bodyshop magazine turned to Mike Jerry, vice-president and general manager, Mitchell Canadian Operations, and Dan Esperson, senior program manager, Alldata for their take. Bodyshop Magazine: What features should I look for in a software system?

It’s also important to find a flexible solution where you can add needed functionality as your business evolves. Your business needs are continually changing, and one size typically does not fit all when it comes to collision repair software. The solution you choose should adapt with your business as it grows, and make your life easier, not more complicated. It’s also vital that your solution choice integrates with other commonly used software applications within your shop, like your accounting system and estimating system. These critical integration points will help improve operational efficiency and accuracy by eliminating the need to repeatedly re-key data into separate systems. Solutions that offer focused choices accessible within a single workspace provide the user with more control over the repair process, customer satisfaction, and business management.

Mike Jerry: Many of today’s software solutions designed to improve operations and financial profitability for bodyshops contain a similar set of features and functionality. However, there are several key areas you want to pay particular attention to when choosing a solution. First of all, the solution needs to offer the functionality that’s important to you, whether your goal is to improve and measure customer satisfaction, or to provide your technicians with a fast and easy way to access repair procedures. The more choices the solution offers, the more likely it is that these choices will align with your unique needs.

Dan Esperson: The ability to accurately pull complete information from any or all estimating systems; the ability to accurately compile/view/print business metrics; the ability to print/view accurate business and production reporting, individually, grouped and trended; the ability to provide the end user with a comprehensive production management tool; the ability to provide OEM repair procedures based on individual estimates compiled from all estimating systems; and finally, the ability to link to outside software packages such as parts locators, salvage locators, OE repair providers, etc., are all critical.

software

BM: How can my software provide a solid ROI and increase my profitability? MJ: In order for a solution to provide a solid return on investment, it needs to substantially increase performance in an area that needs improvement. For example, if you currently lack an organized and automated method of ordering and receiving parts, the solution you select needs to provide functionality to increase your parts profitability, by helping you to manage vendor discounts, send parts price changes electronically to your estimating system, and keep track of parts-returned credits. The solution needs to drive enough of an increase in performance to justify its cost. This is one reason why it is so critical that you are able to easily select and implement the functionality that aligns with your business needs. This will enable you to experience a faster return on your investment, and allow you to implement positive change in the areas that have the greatest room for improvement. Once you start seeing an improvement in one area, you can then move on to the next area you wish to focus on. Implementing functionality little by little helps ensure that you will see the payoff of your software investment. DE: Software accomplishes its ROI by allowing the end user to monitor business metrics/KPIs on any and all repairs performed at the shop, and by allowing the end user to capitalize on provided business metrics and develop strategies for improvement. BM: What features does your software have today that it did not have a few years ago? MJ: With the introduction of Mitchell RepairCenter, we now offer a hosted Workspace solution that allows shops to choose functionality that meets their unique needs and grows with their business as it evolves. RepairCenter offers more choices and integrates with more commonly used software applications than competitive offerings, giving shops more control over the way they run their business. We now provide our industry-leading estimating data, integrated OEM repair procedures and specifications, customer satisfaction indexing, and full-fledged business management functionality—all from a single Workspace. We offer a free version of RepairCenter that includes our online repair status feature and OEM repair procedures from Ford, GM, and Chrysler that can be downloaded at www.mitchellrepaircenter.com. We also offer a mobile version of RepairCenter that can be accessed using an Apple iPhone or iPad.

DE: We now offer complete and accurate OEM repair procedures—both mechanical and collision; an estimate integration enhancement program that provides specific, line-by-line repair procedures obtained from an estimating product; and a quotes tool that provides the end user with the ability to create mechanical repair invoices for the customer. BM: How often do I have to pay for upgrades? How does the updating work? Is it automatic? MJ: Mitchell RepairCenter is a hosted, subscription-based solution, so all software and data updates are pushed automatically to users with a current subscription. Invoicing is typically handled on a monthly basis for all Mitchell customers. DE: There are no fees to the end user for product upgrades, and all of our updating is done automatically online. BM: Is software piracy still a problem for shop software? How can I protect myself from a pirated product? What can I do if I discover that my software is not genuine? MJ: While piracy seems to be decreasing, it does occur from time to time—where someone will attempt to sell a Mitchell solution online via a website like eBay or Craigslist. Mitchell takes software piracy very seriously, and aggressively pursues those who pirate Mitchell software. To protect yourself, simply be sure that any Mitchell purchase is made via an authorized Mitchell dealer and not through an online marketplace site not affiliated with Mitchell. If you discover or suspect that you have mistakenly purchased pirated software, simply call our headquarters at 800-238-9111, and we will work with you to help resolve the issue. DE: Piracy is a problem for shop software due to the fact that complete and accurate piracy business practices/monitoring tools may be outdated and need to adapt continually. To protect your shop from pirated software, you should ask yourself: Have you signed a contract? Are you paying for the product? Do you have communication between the vendor and yourself continually? Are you provided updates to the product you are using? Are you suspicious that the product is pirated? Have you been provided a terms and conditions agreement?

ccif report

CCIF Lands in Montreal Latest edition finds industry insiders talking estimating accuracy, labour, accreditation, and much more

T

he Canadian Collision Industry Forum (CCIF) held its most recent meeting in Montreal in October, where a myriad of topics was on the table, and attendees were given a broad snapshot of the industry’s top trends as well as challenges. Tom Bissonnette of Parr Auto Body got things underway with an informative and thought-provoking presentation demonstrating wildly divergent strategies used across the industry when it comes to estimating. After canvassing for repair estimates using a photograph of a collision repair job, Bissonnette highlighted some of the wide variations in those estimates and how they were constructed. For example, hourly labour rates varied between $52 and $85, paint rates ranged from 1.5 to 6.5 hours, and materials costs from $0 to $95. The lowest total repair time was four hours, and the highest 11.6 hours. As for the total estimates, the lowest was $464 and the highest $1,710. 32 Bodyshop l December 2010 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

While discussion on compensation often focuses on hourly labour rates, Bissonnette’s presentation made it clear that complete and accurate estimating plays a significant role in achieving suitable compensation for the tasks performed. If current practices and processes defined in the insurer-mandated estimating systems were included in both the estimate and the work carried out, then there would be greater consistency of quality, fewer comebacks, and a maximization of revenue at the prevailing labour rate. Speaking of labour, Bissonnette was followed by Jennifer Steeves of the CARS Council, who presented the results of the Labour Market Study. The recent CARS Council study of the automotive aftermarket, “Performance Driven,” looked at the issues of attracting/retaining staff, training, and remuneration/working conditions. Steeves explained that the study included mechanical repair shops and jobbers, as well as the collision repair

industry segment. The most optimistic outlook on the future came typically from the 25% of shops with an HR plan and budget in place to address attracting/ retaining staff, training, skills assessment, and hiring apprentices. However, almost one-third of employers (31%) do not employ any apprentices, despite a proven return on investment and government programs and tax incentives for doing so. Of those that do hire apprentices, almost a quarter have difficulty in retaining them, while those who provide a formal orientation process fare somewhat better in keeping them. What’s more, the survey indicated that currently the national labour market is tight, and that over the next few years over 60% of employers foresaw modest or major shortages of paint and body technicians. Other presentations included a look ahead to the 2011 National Skills Competition (presented by Leanne Blackborow), in which the collision repair industry is slated to play a major role; an in-depth look at accreditation standards—once a front-burner issue—that CARSTAR Automotive Canada’s Larry Jeffries argued was of vital importance if the industry is to standardize its final product offering in any meaningful way; a look at the Clé Verte (green wrench) program in Quebec by Robert Comtois, Nature-Action Quebec; the future of “Lean” from Ron C. Kuehn, DuPont Performance Coatings; and finally, waterborne convergence news from Patrice Marcil, DuPont Performance Coatings. In all, attendees were left with some words of inspiration and motivation, but were also given some concrete, actionable suggestions with which to return to work. The federation’s next meeting takes place in Toronto, January 29th, 2011.

New Liner Chief Automotive Technologies introduces the EZ Liner Express collision repair system, a compact, in-bay solution for the majority of collision repair jobs, affordably priced at less than $10,000. “Traditional frame racks are large, expensive, and absolutely necessary to correctly return vehicles with major collision damage back to pre-accident condition,” says Mike Cranfill, Chief Automotive Technologies vice-president of collision. “But when a shop relies on a single rack to repair all frame damage, bottlenecks can occur, slowing cycle times and reducing profitability. Since not all collision repair jobs require a full-size rack, installing the smaller EZ Liner Express in a few bays frees up the big rack for major jobs, while at the same time improving bay productivity and profitability.” With a constant five tons of power at the hook and lifting capacity up to 5,500 lbs, the EZ Liner Express is a versatile pulling system for reversing light hits, as well as an all-purpose service lift/ workstation for improving bay ergonomics and productivity on other collision repair tasks, including dismantling, sanding, and painting. The EZ Liner Express comes complete with Chief clamps, anchors, and tower. The pivoting tower attaches to the deck in 10 different locations to create a true 360-degree repair system. Its unique telescopic design means the tower can be retracted or extended in just seconds, as needed. The EZ Liner Express has a minimum footprint of just 14 feet by 17 feet, so it can fit comfortably in small, narrow bays and provides more workspace for the technician. TIG Torches

To help provide precision TIG welding performance on thin materials and limited-access joints, Weldcraft offers its WP-50 and WP-125 Micro-TIG torches. Both TIG torches feature lightweight, shorttorch bodies that allow pen-like control on even the most complex applications, including those in aircraft and aerospace industries, artistic metalworking, and welding applications using extremely thin base metals. The WP-50 air-cooled TIG torch provides 50 amps DC (40 AC) of welding capacity at 60% duty cycle. Its miniature 80-degree torch head is only 5/8 inch long and 3/8 inch in diameter, allowing it to be manoeuvred in even the tightest of spaces. Plus, the entire torch is only 8-1/2 inches long and 3/4-in. in diameter at its widest point. This torch is also available in a valved version (WP-50V) for use with power sources that lack a gas solenoid. Similarly, the WP-125 water-cooled TIG torch is available in three models. The WP-125S features a 2-inch torch body, while the WP-125M torch body is 3.5 inches long. The largest of the mirlontotal_ad.pdf 11/9/10 4:14 PM models, the WP-125L, features a15-inch torch body. New Welding Duds Miller Electric Mfg. Co. has introduced WeldX, a new apparel line for personal welding protection that is lightweight and breathable, yet provides exceptional flame and spatter resistance. Sixty percent lighter than most leathers and also lighter than many flame-resistant cotton garments, WeldX represents the next generation in protecting welders from the hazards of heavy-duty welding, while also reducing the potential for heat stress-related injuries. Flame resistance is inherent to WeldX—laundering will not degrade its performance over time. WeldX is based on a fabric technology that has proven its performance and durability in iron production, racecar driving, high-voltage electrical work, firefighting, and other potentially catastrophic applications. The fabric consists of a blend of oxidized acrylic fibres and modern strengthening fibres, which are then treated with a proprietary compound that allows the resulting material to “shed” spatter and sparks upon contact. The proprietary compound is embedded into the individual fibres rather than being applied topically, allowing the garment to retain a high degree of pliability and manoeuvrability. In even the most extreme environments, WeldX will not burn, melt, ignite, or shrink. The newest addition to Miller’s popular Arc Armor line of welding protection, WeldX garments are available as standard welding jackets, sleeves, cape sleeves, bibs, and aprons, offering a range of protection options for a variety of applications and industries. For most applications, WeldX will deliver the highest level of welder protection required without a corresponding increase in heat stress, keeping your welders safe, comfortable, and more productive. New Scissor Lift The Hunter RX10 lift features a 10,000-lb. lifting capacity and a choice of runway lengths to accommodate everything from passenger cars to the longest crew cab pickup trucks. The scissor design requires minimum bay space and can save further space with a shallow-pit installation that sets the runways flush to the floor when fully lowered, eliminating the need for long approach ramps. Surface-mounted models provide a best-in-class lowered height of only 8.75 inches, providing clearance for vehicles with low ride height or low-hanging spoilers. The RX10 improves productivity with timesaving features like the optional PowerSlide system, which automatically controls turnplate and slipplate operation, and the optional Inflation Station feature, which speeds service and ensures more accurate alignments by automatically setting a predetermined tire pressure for each wheel simultaneously. Extra-wide 24” runways with louvred ramps make positioning the vehicle on the lift rack easier, and open access at the front and rear create an unrestricted workspace underneath the vehicle. Optional 6,000-lb. capacity swing air jacks add the capability of lifting vehicles off the runways during alignment procedures and other service operations. The RX10 also offers an integrated air line kit for tools and an optional runway lighting kit to illuminate the workspace under the vehicle. Hunter www.hunter.com

Work Cloths Kimberly-Clark Professional has introduced its highestperforming wiper to date. New Wypall X90 Cloths provide 75% more oil absorption and 35% more water absorption than WypAll X80 Wipers. The product is ideal for heavy wiping, prepping surfaces with solvents, and cleaning metal shavings and rough surfaces. Wypall X90 Cloths are more absorbent than other industrial wiping solutions—especially shop towels and rags. “These new wipers are so absorbent that fewer wipers are needed for cleanup tasks,” explains David Hoeller, category manager, Kimberly-Clark Professional. “In addition, because the wipers are reusable, you get even more mileage out of every sheet.” This translates into 35% less product waste versus other industrial wiping solutions, as well as greater efficiency and productivity. Disposal and freight costs and required storage are also reduced when compared to other types of wipers. Wypall X90 cloths are also portable, so wipers can be taken wherever they are needed. Wypall X90 Cloths were created by a unique manufacturing process: hydro-entangling polyester fibre for softness and oil absorbency, and wood fibre for water absorbency, with an ultrastrong spunbond material via Kimberly-Clark Professional’s Hydroknit fabric technology. These two plies are then bonded together to create an extremely efficient and absorbent cloth. WypAll X90 cloths are available in Pop-Up Box, BRAG Box, and Jumbo Roll formats. Kimberly-Clark Professional is offering a 60/20 guarantee, offering 20% guaranteed savings if customers replace cloth rags or shop towels with WypAll X90 Cloths for 60 days. APPLES AND ORANGES Last issue I communicated how warm and fuzzy I was feeling at the prospect of bringing some real science to the crash parts quality question. The commitments from a number of parties to do some real analysis gave me a very solid feeling of confidence that the rhetoric and emotion that has dominated the topic for years might, if not eradicated, at least be relegated to the fringes of the discussion. As I hope we have all learned by now, the issue of safety is not one to leave to alchemy and sorcery. We have powerful engineering tools at our disposal now; we should use them. In fact, with pronouncements by NSF International about the approvals logged for several bumper parts, in addition to the generally less well-publicized work by CAPA (the Certified Automotive Parts Association), I thought that’s where we were headed. And even when, during the International Autobody Conference and Exposition, I stood transfixed by the looping video of a new report showing the gulf in structural rigidity between OE and aftermarket parts, I chalked it up to picking the worst of the worst to compare against the OE. I was unfazed and unwavering in my belief that aftermarket parts can be of good quality. So it is hard to come to terms with my profound state of disappointment that the very demonstrations I viewed from the television news report might not only have taken liberties to demonstrate how poor some aftermarket parts can be, but went a step further to tamper with the parts, compare apples to oranges, and indict an entire industry as a result. What was perhaps even more disappointing was that this deception—at least that is what it has been called—was not done at the behest of an OE, but appears to have been by one of us, a bodyshop. At issue, as accused by CAPA, is the purported comparison by Performance Auto Collision of Alpharetta, Ga., and the FOX 5 News I-Team of the “bend-ability,” and thus strength, of a BMW-brand radiator support with an aftermarket counterpart. The test was invalid because the two supports were, in fact, completely different parts made to fit on different models of BMW 3-Series vehicles. In this case, the OE part was a cast-aluminum structure, while the aftermarket part it was compared to was a wrought-aluminum part for a different car, and relatively easy to bend. Furthermore, and even more disturbing, is the assertion that the bodyshop modified the wrought-aluminum part to make it more closely resemble the cast part, which to my mind removes any presumption of innocence by ignorance. So, they not only compared apples and oranges, they coloured the apple orange, too. This is the worst kind of deception I can imagine. Taking a scientific view of the quality question means not only doing the testing, but accepting the results. Recent reports by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said that CAPA and quality certified parts do perform as well as OE, and also reminded us that making a part stronger than OE is not necessarily a good thing. Frankly, the kind of behaviour alleged in the case put forth by CAPA is the last thing this industry needs. Despite the generally outstanding behaviour and work of the collision industry across this continent, it remains tough to gain the trust and respect of the public at large. That gets all the tougher when we do damage to our own reputation. And it should also serve as a reminder of how much damage just one bad apple can do to this industry.
