Prepare Today For The World Of Tomorrow As we look forward to the winter and the year ahead, it is easy to fall back on the old clichés: we can’t predict the future, and the fortune teller isn’t taking any new clients. Add to this the promising start to a hard winter experienced by some parts of the country, and you might just start to believe that the experience of early 2012 was but a mere blip on the screen and that everything is back to the way it was. Of course, everyone knows that this is not true. There has been too much fundamental change in the business landscape over the past few years for anyone in the collision industry to assume that the next few years are going to be a replay of any part of our history. Take the vehicle population outlook, for example. The demographics of the current vehicles in operation are not, at least in the short term, in the industry’s favour. The proportion of younger vehicles is at its lowest point in my memory—the growth in one- to three-year-old vehicles over the past couple of years is almost non-existent, while older vehicles have been rising as a consequence of strong sales before 2008—and this has and will continue to have a negative effect on collision repairs. Not only are vehicles more than five years old more easily written off, but when they do get repaired, the price pressures are considerable. So what we have been seeing, and what we will probably see over the next little while, is a “weeding out” of the inefficient and ineffective players. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. While I have always believed that there needs to be a good mix of large, medium, and small players, this is not the same as suggesting that any business, of any size, has a right to stay in business. I won’t belabour the point here, but every business should take the opportunity to continue to improve processes and performance. And, of course, to look for opportunities to gain market share. You’re probably already doing those things, of course, so this is really just a call to continue doing them because the job is never really done; it’s a journey, not a destination. This is also a call to everyone in the industry to try to have a little collective amnesia, if you will—forget the past and build a new more positive set of relationships with each other and with your insurance partners. Yes, relationships can be strained, but at some point somebody has to put history behind them and start talking about tomorrow. It is in everybody’s interest to improve the level of dialogue to build a better customer experience (let’s not forget the customers, the main reason we’re in business at all). All this is necessary to set the stage for the coming boost in younger vehicles. Despite the doldrums that the segment is in right now—or maybe because of it—there is a whole new crop of newer vehicles on the way. Current numbers put Canadian vehicle sales for 2012 on pace to reach their highest level in a decade: 1.72 million. This is up some 5% from 2011, and even though this growth rate is expected to cool in 2013, it is a welcome change from the decline in sales that marked the period following the 2008 economic crisis. So there’s good news on the horizon. The job at hand is to make sure you, your business, and your business relationships, are positioned to take advantage of it. B Andrew Ross aross@bodyshopbiz.com

SN Collision & Glass will be partnering with Quebec-based Carrossier ProColor to create Canada’s largest national collision network. This new strategic alliance will create the largest network of collision repair facilities in Canada, with over 265 locations. CSN COO Flavio Battilana says, “The cultures and synergies of our two networks are an excellent match, and this alliance will not only help to strengthen and grow both CSN and Carrossier ProColor, but will also allow us to provide a complete national solution to our national insurance partners.” “This alliance will allow us to grow our market and give us the power of a major network,” adds Michel Charbonneau, CEO of Carrossier ProColor in Quebec. “Consumers will also be happy with the fact that all businesses making up the new network are collision repair facilities selected for their high levels of performance and their standards of excellence, which provides a superior quality of service. Customer satisfaction is the highest priority for both networks, and we will continue to offer a high standard of service across the country.” A national network of collision repair facilities is excellent news for insurers,

according to the spokespersons. Increasingly, insurance companies are becoming national in scope, and with this new alliance the same standards of quality

BASF sponsors auction at Autoshow Charity Gala

ASF Canada’s coatings division sponsored the Canadian International Autoshow’s 40th Anniversary Charity Gala on Nov. 16 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. This year’s charity auction featured a limited-edition Camaro ZL1 that has received a professional BASF custom paint job with Tribute graphics designed and applied by renowned artist Ron Gibbs. In celebration of the show’s 40th anniversary, the event included special presentations from celebrity guests Dan Aykroyd and Mike Bullard, as well as Canadian racing greats Scott Goodyear, Alex Tagliani, and Paul Tracy. R-M, a BASF Coatings paint brand, will showcase CARIZZMA Colors, a premium special-effect paint system. In addition to offering custom painters an exciting new range of colours, this product provides a spectacular tuning finish and its waterborne properties help make it environmentally friendly. Before the event, Harry Dhanjal, business manager, refinish solutions, BASF Canada, said, “Visitors to the auction will be captivated by the car’s distinctive colour and finish.” Dhanjal said the total value of the unique graphics and paint alone on the car is more than $30,000. He added, “The high-quality pigments and other materials used in R-M’s Onyx systems create some of the cleanest and brightest colours imaginable.” Proceeds from the event were pledged to further the works of the Toronto Automobile Dealers Foundation (TADF), in support of causes such as the Ronald McDonald House, the Trillium Gift of Life Network and the Canadian Safe Schools Network.

New York Appeals Court Denies Summary Judgment to Auto Insurance Company

A

Connecticut bodyshop has won an important victory against an insurance company and several of its affiliates, paving the way for deceptive acts and practices claims against auto insurance companies that divert policyholders away from repair shops outside their favoured network. North State Autobahn, Inc., a Westchester-based auto bodyshop, launched a lawsuit against Progressive Insurance Group Company and several of its affiliates under New York state’s deceptive acts

and practices statute, for misleading consumers into taking their damaged vehicles away from North State to competing bodyshops within Progressive’s “network.” North State’s suit alleges that the insurance company coaxed customers away by maligning the shop’s work and pricing. In North State Autobahn v. Progressive Insurance, the New York Second Department’s ruling, denying Progressive’s motion for summary judgment and allowing North State’s suit to go forward, confirmed a business’s standing to recover

for direct harm caused to it by another business’s deceptive acts and practices— even if that business is a competitor. Justice Robert Miller, writing for a unanimous panel, held that North State’s allegations concerning Progressive’s acts depriving consumers of their choice of bodyshop satisfied the statute’s requirement that the deceptive acts at issue have an impact on consumers at large. The court further held that the law does not require that North State identify specific consumers who were harmed.

speaking at the 65-guest ceremony. “Now, 35 years later, we’re embarking on that same mission in China. I’m very optimistic we can succeed here as spectacularly as we have at home.” Also present were Craftsman Executives; Vice President David Cant and General Manager of Real Estate Greg Hatswell, as well as British Columbia Government Trade Director

John McDonald and Wuzhong District Mayor Xu Feng, along with industry representatives. Festivities were temporarily interrupted by a torrential downpour complete with thunder and lightning only to have the clouds part and sun shining again minutes later, which according to Chinese tradition, is a very good harbinger for success.

ith dancing dragons, Chinese folk music and a little help from nature, Wedge Clamp Systems opened a sparkling new 20,000-square-foot bodyshop in Suzhou, China. The shop includes a modern reception area, classroom, boardroom, and training rooms. Chan approached Wedge Clamp’s customer, Craftsman Collision, the largest independently owned bodyshop chain in Canada, about joining forces. Alex Zenardi is my hero also (“Go Ask Alex,” Bodyshop, October 2012). I have read his book, My Sweetest Victory; I am a race fan also (although mainly NASCAR). However when Alex came on the Indy car scene I was taken by his personality, his zest for life, his donuts, and his infectious smile. Although it is amazing how he overcame his injuries, I said to my wife shortly after his accident that he would survive and probably race again because of his positive attitude. After reading that he set a goal to walk on the beach with his son on his shoulders, I am not surprised that he accomplished it. He has such a positive attitude that has helped him throughout his life. I knew when I first saw that he was going to be in the Paralympics, that he would succeed and be a gold medal winner because that is what he saw in his own mind and set a course to accomplish his vision. Thanks for reminding me and all who read your article to be passionate about life, your business and your family, and put in the effort to accomplish your goals. As our teams travel across the country, the equipment sees all kinds of harsh conditions, and in the motorsports entertainment business our vehicles have to look perfect every time. Thanks to the durability and unparalleled quality of Matrix System products, that impression is easy to maintain.”

Widespread Damage from Hurricane Sandy Results in Thousands of FloodDamaged Vehicles

Did you know that when you are spraying a catalyzed paint product in a spray booth or prep deck, the proper personal protection equipment is an air-supplied respirator? Air supplied respirators must be supplied with Grade “D” Breathable Air. Quality Air Breathing Systems are designed to provide Grade “D” Breathable Air from your existing compressed air system, for compliance with current CSA Standards when using an air supplied respirator. Systems sized from one person to twelve persons at the same time. We offer complete systems, with proper filtration and carbon monoxide monitors, panel mounted, and ready to use. Available in belt mounted, wall mount, and portable versions.

T

he staff and members of the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) send their thoughts and prayers to the thousands of people directly impacted by Hurricane Sandy. In the wake of historic damage produced by the storm, ARA is once again urging the U.S. Congress to review implementation and enforcement of the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) to ensure all flood-damaged vehicles are appropriately tracked and not sold to unsuspecting automotive consumers. NMVTIS, a national electronic system that provides consumers with valuable information about a vehicle’s condition and history, must be fully enforced so that it can play its crucial role in helping to ensure that these flood-damaged vehicles are not sold to unsuspecting consumers in the used-car market. “According to the [U.S.] Department of Justice, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, law enforcement and insurance crime experts reported truckloads of flooded vehicles being taken out of Louisiana to other states where they were dried out, cleaned, and sold to unsuspecting consumers in other states,” says Wilson. “NMVTIS must be fully implemented and utilized to prevent this activity from happening again.”

IBC Warns Canadians of Flooddamaged Vehicles in Aftermath of “Superstorm” Sandy

A

s the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region recover from “Superstorm” Sandy, which hit between October 29 and 31st, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) warns Canadians to be vigilant of stormdamaged vehicles being resold to unsuspecting consumers. Bodyshops and others in the automotive aftermarket industry are warned to be on the lookout as well. Authorities estimate that thousands of vehicles have been damaged from flooding in several U.S. states. IBC is working with National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) and law enforcement to identify these storm-damaged vehicles to reduce the potential for consumers being taken advantage of. Rick Dubin, Vice-President of Investigative Services at IBC, says, “This is a case of buyer beware. When considering a private purchase, you should consider doing a history search of the vehicle and have the vehicle fully inspected by a known mechanic to ensure it is not a storm- or flood-related or even stolen vehicle. The consumer can also go to the NICB’s web site and run the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through NICB’s VIN search to see if it comes up as a branded vehicle.”

A substantial collision and repair component joined automotive refurbishers and suppliers, who were brought together in a series of halls and outdoor booths, including many lining a makeshift outdoor exhibition area in the adjacent parking lot, to demonstrate rebuilt vehicles. “It’s sensory overload,” said a wide-eyed Mitch Peacock of Edmonton-based Just Cuz’ Customs, of the hundreds of rebuilt specialty vehicles on display, many at booths of sponsoring suppliers. “We are a small niche shop, so attending is a major investment. But the creative ideas we get here will fuel us for the rest of the year.” Gary Gallant, VP sales at FBS Distribution, which will be sponsoring a vehicle that Peacock will re-work for next year’s show, agrees. “[SEMA] is a splendid platform to showcase products. For example, this year we are introducing an innovative line of specialty tapes here, in order to get feedback from top industry professionals.” The new tapes will feature better elasticity, lower tack, and other features that will enable painters such as Peacock to produce finer and more subtle artistic offerings. The new line will compete with 3M’s masking tapes,

but Gallant claims not to be worried. “We are a targeted niche player,” he noted. “All we want is a small part of the market we specialize in.” AkzoNobel is making similar efforts to develop new niches, says Laura Costollo, North American director of marketing (automotive and aerospace coatings products), by launching the StickerFix paint-strip line, a do-it-yourself solution, which it was displaying at the show. As the description implies, the strips enable users to mask defects by covering them with a small tape-like strip that matches the initial paint colour. The company will be offering the strips in the most popular automotive colours each year, as well as a base strip that users of specialty paints can paint on to create a backup supply for later use.

Norton: a great showcase “When we have new technologies to introduce we often do it here,” says Biagio Pellegrino, senior product manager, automotive aftermarket, at Norton, a 33-year industry veteran who has been attending SEMA longer than he can remember. “But the event also serves as a great source of industry news and developments. If you want to find out what’s new in the trade, this is the place.” Pellegrino used his time at the show to talk up improvements to Norton’s Paint System with SpillGard. The company, which is already one of the world’s largest marketers of abrasives, introduced the new product four years ago to try to elbow into the growing reusable paint (can) market. The new system offers a variety of features, including triple-seal protection, a unitized lid/liner, quick-connect lid, self-sealing valve, actuated adaptor, and an extended filter area and space between the tower and filter for additional flow. “Innovation is key,” says Pellegrino. “In a changing industry such as ours, even small improvements when made consistently can make a big difference down the line.” Networking, sponsorship announcements, catching up with trends Many SEMA participants also leveraged the show to reconnect with industry peers, to share tips and to discuss business trends, which continue to diverge on both sides of the 49th parallel.

That said, BASF continues to innovate, said Dhanjal, and is developing new technologies that will help reduce stops in bodyshop workflows. The company is expected to announce a variety of initiatives such as new clears and primers later this year. The massive media coverage that SEMA 2012 generated was another indicator of the event’s success. More than 100 national and international print, radio, television and online reporters jammed the site’s press room, and coverage at all levels was considerable. SEMA exhibitors competed fiercely to attract booth traffic, by displaying exotic rebuilt vehicles that had conference-goers swooning. www.bodyshopbiz.com l January 2013 l Bodyshop 15

New Software Options:

Build Profit,

Save Time Many bodyshops are missing out on profit from continuous improvements to productivity-enhancing purchasing, estimating, accounting, and workflow management software. By Peter Diekmeyer

odyshops face greater challenges and opportunities today than at almost any time in the last two decades. Heightened competition, pressure from insurance companies shrinking the number of outlets they do business with, and increased pricing pressure are forcing collision and repair managers to look at new ways to boost productivity. According to one industry veteran, one of the best is to tighten back-office workflows. “Bodyshops that aren’t using the right management information systems and software are leaving money on the table…it’s as simple as that,” says Mike Jerry, general manager and vice-president, Canadian operations at Mitchell International, which has been helping collision and repair shops computerize their workflows for close to ten years. “The people that I meet daily are among the best craftsmen anywhere. However, once they put a sign up they become businessmen. Doing that profitably is a whole different ball game.” Jerry should know; he grew up in a familyrun bodyshop and has seen how paperwork can bog down operations. Yet while most outlets have already implemented software modules to speed up purchasing, accounting, word processing, billing, communications, and other functions, new options are increasingly becoming available.

Know who your most profitable clients are “When I walk into a bodyshop I always ask staff who their most profitable client is, and I inevitably get the name of their largest,” says Jerry. “However, large-volume clients often ask for big discounts. If you don’t have an effective job-costing software package to estimate profit on each job, you may actually be losing money on large-volume accounts.” Mitchell International markets more than 50 software modules ranging from purchasing, to repair and work order programs, to estimating, billing, and production functionalities. The company also supplies close to 30 of what Jerry semi-jokingly calls “apps.” These are partner applications such as accounting packages (from vendors such as SAGE 50 [Simply Accounting], QuickBooks and Dealer Management Systems), which integrate with Mitchell products. Sales of Mitchell Inter-

national products are made using a “software-as-service” (SAS) model where usage is billed monthly depending on which modules customers choose.

An electronic purchasing agent Other companies such as EZpartorder.com, which bills itself as an “electronic purchasing agent” designed for collision repair shops, specialize in just one main application. The EZpartorder.com purchasing system enables you to generate orders from your estimating system using your own supplier list, then confirm data such as pricing and delivery dates, and review pending orders and parts status. Data is stored on EZpartorder.com servers that the company describes as secure and can be accessed at any time. Electronic purchasing systems are said by many users to be particularly attractive because they enable collision and repair specialists to spend more time with their customers, and less with suppliers, all while maintaining productivity in the procurement process.

Advances in estimating software According to one industry veteran, some of the greatest software advances have been made in packages that assist in the completion of collision and repair estimates. “When I started in the business in 1979, many shops were doing estimates by hand,” says Rick Tuuri, a software expert at Audatex. “It was a laborious process that involved searching out part numbers and calculating labour time manually and then adding it all up. These days it’s much easier.” The latest estimating systems operate seamlessly. The estimator merely enters the Vehicle Identification Number of the car being repaired and a three-dimensional graphic of it appears. He can then manipulate the part representation, turn it around and so on, to get a better view of the individual elements and how they fit together, so that he can identify which ones he needs to order. The estimator then clicks on those parts, and the estimating program provides a list of OEMs or aftermarket producers that supply it. The program also estimates the amount of time it will take to replace the part(s). Continued on page 19

SCALING THE

E-MARKETING HEIGHTS by Leslie C. Smith

N

ot sure what digital media can do for your business? How does an extra $64K in annual sales sound to you? In order to understand what digital marketing can do for your business, Summit Software Solutions president and CEO Frank Terlep, whose company recently launched a new digital marketing service called Emarketing Sherpas, presents a few simple facts and figures to ponder. “The age group most likely to be in an accident is 18 to 35,” says Terlap. “If you’re going to market your business to that prime segment, you have to know that they use this technology all the time; they’ve grown up with it. If you only use the phone for customer communications, you know that you get voicemail 50% of the time. Email is far more efficient, and text-messaging gets through to the client virtually every time – 98% of people receiving a text look at it within the first three minutes. Properly performed digital marketing will generate additional revenues for you.”

Summit’s “esherpas” offer solutions for three main worries. “Number one is getting customers to purchase new things. Let’s use a $2M-per-year business as a typical example. This company will repair 870 to 900 cars on an annual basis. Customers who come back for other service expenditures pay, on average, an extra $250. If we can get a conservative 2% increase in return through email, text, Web, and social media reminders, that generates $4,400 per year in extra sales. “Number two is getting unsold estimate clients into the fold, improving your closing ratios. The typical shop ratio is about 65% completed sales. That means 470 customers leave the business without closing. In 90% or more of cases, shops do not have an unsold estimate follow-up system. We automate that, using personalized email and text messaging to contact everyone right after their visit. Think of it – the consumer is most likely shopping around. If you’re the only

bodyshop following up with them, you have a much higher chance of standing out. Again, a conservative increase of 2% would generate over $20,000 additional revenue per year. “Finally, number three involves increasing the number of customers who refer your business to others. By automatically following up after the initial service visit and then every quarter for the next 10 years, by keeping your brand in front of people through electronic ‘face time,’ you can increase referrals. The typical person will forget a bodyshop’s name within two years’ time. Yet accidents generally happen every seven to 10 years. “By implementing a digital marketing platform and services with a minimum lifespan of 10 years, you’re well ahead of the game. Another 2% referral rate to family and friends, with an average repair order amount of about $2,300, that means over $40,000 in revenues on a yearly basis.”

Continued from page 17

The estimator has the option of either accepting or rejecting the suggestion. The software then sends copies of the estimate to insurance companies, vehicle owners, and other related parties and can export the data to other workflow tracking programs that follow up. That said, the collision and repair estimating software market is also extremely competitive, and providers such as Audatex need to constantly innovate to stay ahead. For example, during the past few years, the company has introduced a variety of improvements designed to turn its products into critical applications. These include the threedimensional graphics capabilities noted above and the identification of colour-coated substrates on parts drawings, so users can tell at a glance what materials they are made of. Audatex’s latest advance is AudaVin, a software plug-in that enables users to tap into selected manufacturers’ databases to access data that is unavailable using traditional VIN searches. These include special navigation, premium or other packages included in the sale, as well as other options such as radios, brushed aluminum trim, and the like. So far, Audatex has managed to sign up BMW, Audi, and Mercedes into the program. And according to Turri, the company is expected to make further announcements in this regard shortly.

Are small shops being left behind? One of the biggest challenges that the rise of information-based workflows has created has been the pressure that they are putting on small shops to keep up. Unlike major players, one-, two- and three-person garages often cannot afford to dedicate someone full-time to handle the paperwork and IT implementation burden, not to mention the cost of the software itself. Tuuri notes that software providers are now coming up with increasingly flexible and scalable solutions that can accommodate a growing number of players. The degree to which collision repair shops introduce these innovations will continue to be decided at the outlet level. However, according to Mitchell International’s Jerry, one thing is clear: industry competition is increasingly being won (or lost) not just in shop floors, but in back offices as well. “You can’t manage what you don’t measure,” says Jerry. “So at a certain point, it is less important just what information system you use, as long as you are using one of them.”

“Bodyshops that are not using the proper management information systems and software are leaving money on the table…it’s as simple as that.” Mike Jerry, Mitchell International

Paint Delivery Systems

Go High Tech by Leslie C. Smith

H

igh Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) compliance, Reduced Pressure (RP) alternatives, nozzles and cups, contamination and cleaning—there’s a lot to consider when outfitting your paint booth. This season, three brand-new, top-of-the-line products are vying for your buying attention. Allow us to check them out in depth for you.

Speedier Paint Delivery The new Hybrid LS400H SuperNova spray gun from Anest Iwata boasts HVLP conformation twinned with conventional speed. While it maintains the standard of 10 psi dynamic pressure at the air-cap, the Hybrid’s patent-technology nozzle uses a series of special air slits at its tip to initiate the paint shredding process. The liquid begins to break up as early as 0.7 psi and is already pre-atomized within 4.4 psi—all without any extra air-cap assistance. Add in more air pressure, and you have compliance at a speedier delivery rate, something that highproduction bodyshops would surely welcome. And the good news doesn’t end there. The easy-to-clean guns are available with either plastic or anodized aluminum cups, making

them capable of holding both waterborne and solvent-based paints. The nozzles—gold for coarse atomization and platinum for fine atomization—come in multiple sizes but use only one needle and one air-cap, so there’s no need to buy a whole needle/nozzle matched set. They are also friction-fit, metal to metal, which means no extra gaskets to worry about. Finally, the innovative design offers technicians a “tulip” spray pattern with broader coverage than the normal triangulated pattern of other guns. “The increased speed and productivity of this technology delivers a flatter finish, more evenly dispersed atomization, and less material waste,” says Mark Hebbeler, marketing and sales director for the West Chester, Ohiobased Anext Iwata USA. “This guarantees significant material savings. In the course of a year, our guns will decrease your paint usage by 20 to 30%.” One more thing to get excited about: The Hybrid LS400H SuperNova’s body has been re-styled for improved ergonomics by none other than Pininfarina S.p.A., the same Italian firm that designs for Ferrari, Maserati, and Rolls-Royce. The new gun has a fatter grip and trigger so that it fits comfortably in the

hand, as well as recalibrated balance points and reduced weight to lessen operational strain.

Self-Sealing Paint Cup If you’ve had your fill of spills, then Norton Paint is prepared to come to your relief. Its new Torq Paint System with SpillGard is the only unitized and self-sealing cup in the industry. The unitized system features just three parts—a disposable lid, ring, and liner—that can be easily assembled in a reusable hard mixing cup (complete with preprinted measurements, so no need to keep track of inserts) and then attached sans cup as a single entity atop the gun. Proprietary SpillGard technology includes triple-seal protection that ensures paint stays in the cup and thus helps you avoid costly rework, actuated adaptors to fit any model gun, and an extended filter area

h

that leaves extra space between the tower and the filter for optimal flow capability. The self-sealing, springloaded valve releases paint only when attached to the gun, eliminating the need for plugs for transporting, storing, or shaking. As well, the unitized lid/liner assembly won’t accidentally come apart, so say goodbye to spilled paint and hello to paint that keeps fresher longer and remains in storage without springing a leak. “The pot life of paint is brief,” says Biagio Pellegrino, product manager for Norton. “You’ve only got a couple of hours storagetime till it hardens, maybe a couple of days if the paint has no hardener in it. Our sealed unit extends the life of the paint—and this is what saves the technician money.” Torq also has Quick-connect built into its system. A push and a turn lets you both feel and hear the click of notches on valve and lid that tells you without any further safety checks that the unit is engaged and sealed, the valve is opened, and you’re ready to paint. As for cleaning, the disposable system eliminates everything but washing the gun; there are no gunked-up threads to laboriously swab out, simply because each unit comes with a fresh set. “That’s the beauty of the system,” Pellegrino continues. “It’s going to save you time and money, because you don’t have to rewash bits and pieces and the hard cup. You bring a completely clean system into the booth every time, eliminating the possibility of contamination. There’s less rework because of the best practices involved. “You also buy only what you need, so if you use more lids than liner rings, you’ve got just the right amount with no overages. We don’t sell in large kits, just 24-count, ready-touse, self-dispenser boxes that can be mounted right on the wall, which keeps the dirt out of them, unlike reusable plastic boxes.” Shops thus get an edge on efficiency because technicians can prep paint in advance and then grab and go as needed, with minimal cleanup. “Clean parts, less contamination…You do away with the situation where a technician suits up with mask and gloves, carefully wipes down the vehicle and parts inside the paint booth, and then does something foolish like

taking parts out of a dirty box or bringing in reusable paint cups.”

High Transfer Efficiency The new SataJet 4000 B ‘Super Speed’ RP model from Sata Spray Equipment lays claim to a superior soft-spray pattern, perfected ergonomics, and outstanding atomization, thanks in part to the high transfer-efficiency rates of its low-pressure technology. Speaking from his Calgary office, Thomas Gierens, sales manager for the Canadian distributor Eurotech, states that the gun’s state-of-the-art, Reduced Pressure air-cap allows for more thrust while still hitting the 65% or more standard, allowing for faster application and a higher transfer rate. “The droplets are more even and closer together. This means less paint and less strikes needed to complete the job.” Along with improved precision, the gun’s ergonomic design—a lowered centre of gravity, a 15% reduction in weight, and a specially formed gun handle “that fits like a glove” – offers lighter, improved handling that keeps its stability at a 90-degree angle. Noise levels have been reduced by up to 50%. Even the adjustment knobs are built bigger, to accommodate glove-covered hands. And the innovative round/flat fan control has been brought down to a quarter-turn, so that a technician can change from an open to needle-fine spray with the flick of one hand. The SataJet’s new nozzle guarantees a uniform and perfectly shaped spray fan, with the material laying down softly and evenly. Thanks to chrome-nickel plating and an interior specially coated against corrosion, it’s easy to clean too. “Where the cup connects to the gun we have a patented Quick Cup Connector, which has no threads, so no cleaning worries,” says Gierens. “A quarter-turn and the cup is tight. Our air-cap takes only one revolution to connect, and its coarse thread makes it much easier to clean.” To cut right to the chase, the SataJet 4000 B ‘Super Speed’ RP provides low maintenance, high performance, technicianfriendly design, and an atomization process for both colour-matching precision and uniform paint distribution that ensures a brilliant finish at rapid application speed.

Insurance Relationships In Focus

at September CCIF

Canadian Collision Industry Forum • Hotel des Seigneurs, St-Hyacinthe, QC Friday, September 28th, 2012

T

he Canadian Collision Industry Forum’s quarterly meeting convened in St-Hyacinthe, Quebec on September 28. Though the Forum, as always, covered a lot of ground, some of the most interesting—and most lively—discussions at the September event had to do with the sometimes rocky relationship between the collision repair and insurance industries, and how the best results happen when both parties accommodate the business realities of the other. CCIF’s next conference is scheduled for Toronto on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Register now at www.ccif.net. Insurer Co-Operation: The Role of Quebec’s Automobile Insurers Group (GAA) Johanne Lamanque, Automobile Insurers Group, (GAA), noted that auto insurers in Quebec are members of GAA, an agency funded by Quebec insurers to ensure straightforward and fair regulations, provide helpful and pertinent information, and to work with all stakeholders. With regard to the subject of appraisals, Johanne explained that GAA was responsible for drawing up standards and procedures, for training and qualifying appraisers, for producing appraiser guidelines and for overseeing the profession. Through a committee comprising insurers and collision repairers, GAA continues to study all issues regarding appraisal and auto repair, making recommendations on changes and new practices. Through accessibility, teamwork and transparency, GAA succeeds in providing a service valued by industry stakeholders and consumers alike, added Johanne. Quebec Industry Action As the trade association representing Quebec’s collision repairers, CCPQ (corporation de carrossiers de Québec) maintains four lobbyists and a lawyer to support its members and protect their interests. An example of the association’s agenda was the replacement vehicle cost issue, said CCPQ’s Michel Bourbeau. A committee has been established to find a

solution acceptable to all parties. Another key issue demanding ongoing attention was the attraction and retention of staff. Michel provided some statistics showing that 6,644 people were engaged in collision repair in Quebec, and that 68% of them worked in facilities with less than five employees. Studies showed that the industry would need to recruit about 1800 skilled staff over the next few years to maintain capacity. A Look at Intact’s Latest Program In the “private insurance” provinces the insurance industry is as competitive as any other, said Intact Financial Corporation spokesperson Wendy Hillier. Like any other business, insurers seek ways to improve efficiencies, increase customer satisfaction, and increase profitability. Sometimes changes are incremental or relatively minor, but occasionally there are innovations that merit the attention of the whole industry and require it to consider the implications. The Intact Rely program is one such example, since it involves the procurement of parts by the insurer and there was interest in the impact of this on different stakeholders. In this session, Remy Rousseau moderated a conversation between Wendy Hillier of Intact and CCIF chairman Tom Bissonnette. The purpose was to clarify the key points of the Intact Rely program and to address concerns and gather feedback. Concerning the selections of shops to participate in the program, Wendy advised that the total number of shops was determined based on Intact’s projected volume of claims to assure a steady volume of work. The network size would be a function of the number and location of shops necessary to handle the volume of claims processed by Intact. Currently, 60-70% of Intact claims are handled by Rely program shops. Tom was concerned that Intact might select shops from the 80% of repairers that had not invested in their business, but Wendy suggested the objective was to select from the best—which would likely come from the 20% of shops that had invested.

When asked about the potential impact on shop profitability, Wendy replied that with the combined buying power of Intact Rely on parts, the margin it allowed to shops, and the reduction in their parts procurement administration, there should be no adverse effect on profitability. Indeed, some shops would enjoy higher margins for less effort. The choice to select one aftermarket parts supplier out of two would simplify and reduce administrative costs for all involved, claimed Wendy. In a second session on this topic, Vasco Rebuli of Toyota Canada, France Choinière of CARSTAR Arsenault, and Frank Notte of the Trillium Auto Dealers Association expressed their views on the program. Vasco was concerned that a Toyota dealer shop on the program might have to buy parts from another dealer, but Wendy explained that in such a case, there would be no interference in the current situation if a pre-existing ownership or contractual relationship was in place. France, a Carstar franchisee who had been on the program for some time, asked what future program developments might be expected from Intact. Wendy replied that Intact’s Quebec team had set high standards and would be driving volume based on each shop’s CSI levels. France felt it would help to have access to CSI survey results and learned that this would happen as soon as the surveys become electronic. Frank Notte, whose trade association represents 850 dealers in Ontario, stated his dislike for the program and objected to the business model, because it would limit the number of dealers from which Intact shops could buy parts. Wendy understood the view, but commented that to include all dealers in the program would reduce price competition. She did, however, acknowledge that the program was still going through its implementation phases and that these discussions at CCIF had opened up new dialogue and lines of communication. Intact would be pleased to continue discussions, she said, with a view to understanding the needs and concerns of interested parties.

I-CAR Champions Online Training Programs

I

-CAR’s Virtual Classroom is a new online training program that allows students to learn in a “live,” classroom-like setting, without the need to travel. Virtual Classroom offers select courses that require scheduling and advance registration just like regular, offline courses, and offers interaction with a live instructor as well as interactive, (virtual) hands-on training in a variety of subjects. The program joins a growing body of online training videos being presented by I-CAR starting in December and continuing through 2103, which can be accessed according to the student’s own schedule. Among the topics covered are courses addressing the special techniques and tips associated with working with aluminum, as well as carbon fibre panels; the ins and outs of collision avoidance systems, and keeping them properly calibrated; and continuing to improve and diversify the offerings in the Professional Development Program, through which I-CAR works with auto manufacturers to offer training and certification in marque-specific techniques, repairs, and standards. The videos, says I-CAR’s Andrew Shepherd, present a new, more tech-friendly alternative method for offering training. “It continues I-CAR’s trend towards more hands-on applications,” explains Shepherd. “In the past, there had been some criticism that the courses had become more theoretical, and most of our audience tends to learn better in a hands-on setting. So the videos are designed to be more hands-on as a result.”

Celebrity Welder Jessi Combs Launches Welding Gear Line For Female Metalworkers

New Disposable Paint Cup System

Norton, a brand of Saint-Gobain, announces the launch of the TORQ Paint System with SpillGard. Norton TORQ Paint System is manufactured with the company’s proprietary SpillGard technology, comprised of a quick-connect lid, innovative self-sealing valve, and triple seal. Because all components are disposable, paint technicians bring a completely clean system into the booth every time, eliminating the possibility of contamination. Paint Coating Packaging Innovation AkzoNobel Automotive & Aerospace Coatings Americas announces the introduction of click&go—a patent pending “pouch and frame” packaging solution designed for bodyshops, designed to enable the refinish process to become less complex, more efficient, and more sustainable. The North American introduction of click&go will initially be designated for use with Sikkens clearcoat products. Packages will be offered in multiple sizes with products that provide choices suitable for a variety of application needs. The unique design enables painters to simply open the package to combine the clearcoat and hardener. Once the package is closed and given a quick shake it is immediately ready to be secured on the paint gun. AkzoNobel www.AkzoNobel.com

AFTERMARKET – OEM PARTS SURVEY

here is no question that the decision between aftermarket and OEM, between new and recycled, comes into play every day, at every shop across Canada. Overall, our Aftermarket – OEM Parts Survey, responded to by 80 shops in the first 72 hours, found that the proportion of aftermarket parts usage had increased in the last year, although comments suggested that OEM suppliers are fighting back. “Insurers have increased the usage, but with OEM manufacturer programs we are able to price-match OEM part to aftermarket. So in a lot of cases, even though the estimate calls for aftermarket, we install OEM,” says one of the respondents. Shops generally put pressure from insurers at the core of the push for aftermarket parts, with some 36% of respondents stating that they had been asked to use aftermarket parts on a vehicle as young as one year old. “It used to be two years old and 20,000 km was the rule for OEM parts. Now some insurers don’t care if there is 10 km on the car. Use the cheapest available – used, OEM, aftermarket or repair,” says one shop. There was, however, evidence of increasing confidence in aftermarket parts at the top of the quality spectrum. One shop actually gave a ringing endorsement. “CAPA-certified [is] a non-issue for us. We will not use unless they are CAPA. As for OE, we’ve had more issue with the quality of parts than CAPA-certified.” “My opinion is in the last few years the aftermarket quality has really improved since, say, 10 years ago. Most late-model vehicle parts are just as good, or better in some cases, than the OEM ones. Obviously the OEMs are seeing the same thing; otherwise they would not be offering programs to try and cut out the aftermarket.” Our survey also revealed that while CAPA certification has a high level of awareness – 85% said they are “very aware” – it is the flipside for the newer NSF program, of which more than 75% said they were not aware. Clearly NSF has some work to do here. But the variability of aftermarket parts seems to be the key issue. While some respondents said they have even had issues with OEM parts, it’s generally accepted that they meet a consistent quality level, whereas “aftermarket” can vary greatly in fit and finish.

And a number of respondents expressed concern about the impact of consolidation in the aftermarket and recycled parts sector, with some respondents saying it has caused discounts to dwindle. Still, overall it continues to be an issue of education. “The issue has and seemingly continues to be the lack of knowledge with respect to insurance policy provisions so we may properly advise our clients and insurers regarding

appropriate usage of these parts. As a large portion of collision repairs involve an insurance claim, it is crucial that shops properly understand the provisions of the applicable insurance policy. Also, it is of greater importance to be able to properly advise the customer of the pros and cons to aftermarket parts usage and articulate it in a manner that is clear and comprehensible by a layperson. Our industry really needs to step up in this regard.”
