CCIF Report: Edmonton Meeting

The 2013 editions of both SEMA and ASRW proved to be more successful and well attended than in previous years, proving that the collision repair and automotive aftermarket industries are on a very promising upward trend. Here’s a wrap-up of the highlights of both shows.

The AAIA’s 2013 Digital Collision Repair Trends Report provides a fascinating snapshot of trends and changes affecting the American and Canadian collision repair industries. Here’s a synopsis of some of the information in the report, with a focus on the Canadian market.

I-CAR is highlighting three new courses in its 2014 curriculum of particular relevance to today’s bodyshop technician. Here is a synopsis of the new courses on offer.

The Canadian Collision Industry Forum held its fall meeting at the Fairmont Macdonald Hotel in Edmonton, Alta., on Saturday, September 28, 2013. We present excerpts from the reports presented at that meeting. The next CCIF meeting is scheduled for Toronto on Saturday, February 4, 2014.

Cover 14 Smarten Up Your Systems: Embracing Today’s Total Shop Solutions There are many excellent software systems on the market today that streamline every aspect of the day-to-day running of the bodyshop, from systematizing the estimating process to running the minutiae of a successful business. Some of these systems are so powerful and multifaceted that a surprising number of shops simply aren’t aware of how much they can do to improve productivity.

Bring Passion, Reap the Rewards It is a reality of the human condition that some people are better at some things than others. And, while our coddling-at-all-costs society may be breeding a generation of young people who feel they’re all special at everything, there is no escaping this basic human fact. I will leave it up to others who think far more deeply than I do about the prospects of our future over the long haul under the leadership of youth raised in this age. I will say this, however: as special or un-special as any individual may feel – as talented or untalented an individual may be in any particular endeavour – what is far more important to their success is whether they have a passion for what they are doing, and whether they can direct that passion to fuel the hard work that goes into making a real career out of what they love to do. While it can be imagined that there are some minimum attributes to be taken into account – it would be difficult to be a really accurate painter if one were colour-blind, for example – the world is full of exceptions to any rule I try to think up. If 5-foot-3 Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues can play in the NBA, if a diabetic kid from Flin Flon, Manitoba named Bobby Clarke can captain his Philadelphia Flyers to two Stanley Cups and score a bunch of goals along the way, if Alex Zanardi can lose his legs in a crash and can come back to win not one but two Paralympic Gold Medals, virtually anything is possible. If you have the will. If you have the passion. In fact, I submit to you that even those who have tremendous talent really succeed because they have passion, too. And while you might take from these examples the lesson that the challenges you face in business somehow pale by comparison (and on one level, I suppose they do), I hope that you also take the lesson that the passion you have for the business you have built in this industry runs just as deep and the accomplishments you have made are far more significant to your family, your staff, and your community than any of the admirable accomplishments you may read in the sports pages. It is that passion for the business which has sustained you, and those who are part of your team, through the thick and thin of the market, the increasingly complex nature of your business relationships, and the challenging financial circumstances that you have seen year in, year out. And, as we look forward to 2014, I suggest you exercise another take on the topic: when you look at potential hires of any age, look beyond the skills they might bring to your operation. Look, if you can, beyond their body of work, and see if they bring a passion to your meeting. If a candidate already lacks passion when you’re meeting for the first time, you’re sure to be on a downward trend that may even spread to others on your team. Look for passion. Listen for it in their tone of voice. See it in how excited they get when they talk about the prospect of coming to work for you. The rest can be taught, and the passion they bring will make even that so much easier. And lastly, work to keep that passion alive in your own world. It will sustain you and help sustain those around you too. It is what will set you apart from the competition and make you a winner, every day. B Andrew Ross aross@bodyshopbiz.com

White Continues as Top Global Car Colour for 2013 P

PG Industries has released its annual automotive colour trend data, which shows that white continues to be the most popular car colour globally based on 2013 automotive build data. According to PPG’s global data, white ranked first (up 3% from last year to 25%) and silver and black tied for second (18% each). These were followed by grey, red, natural hues, blue and green, all of which maintained the same share of popularity as in 2012. In North America, white remains most popular (21%), followed by black (19%), grey (17%), and silver (15%). These were followed by red, blue, natural hues and green. In South America, however, silver leads in popularity (33%), followed by white (29%), black (13%), grey (11%), red (8%), natural (3%), blue (2%), and green and other colours (1% total). “While white continues to be the most dominant choice in car colour, we see growth in the variety of whites being offered to consumers,” says Jane E. Harrington, PPG manager, colour styling, automotive (original equipment manufacturer) coatings. “Car manufacturers are seeking ways to create variations of white, silver, black, and grey that are specific to their brands and that complement different vehicle types. Distinct effects such as

micas, glass flakes, fine bright aluminum, and hue-shifting pigments help them achieve this.” In fact, across North American vehicle types in 2013, PPG found that: • Sport models are most likely to feature shades of red and blue; • The largest percentage of gold and beige vehicles is in the minivan segment; • Luxury vehicles, 57% of which were grey in 2013, are most likely to feature effect finishes in black metallic and white pearl;

• Colour varies most across sport utility vehicles (SUVs), with relatively equal distributions finished in shades of white, black, blue, red and grey. Looking ahead, Harrington says drivers may see more blue in 2014 models. PPG’s data has shown increases in the popularity of blue for certain regions and vehicle types, such as an increase in North America this year and more than double the popularity in sport models there between 2011 and 2013.

What Youth Think About the Skilled Trades

T

he Canadian Apprenticeship Forum – Forum canadien sur l’apprentissage (CAF-FCA) provides fresh insights into the way youth across Canada perceive the skilled trades in its latest report, Apprenticeship Analysis: Youth Perceptions of Careers in the Skilled Trades. Current and anticipated skills shortages, combined with a demographic crunch as baby boomers retire, have raised expectations around recruiting the next generation workforce. An important element of attracting young people to the skilled trades is under-

standing how their perceptions and attitudes affect career decisions. In this report, CAF-FCA documents the findings of a national survey with more than 800 students across Canada in spring 2013, and compares the results to findings from a parallel investigation in 2004. “CAF-FCA members have placed a high priority on raising awareness among young people about apprenticeship, trade certification and career opportunities in the skilled trades. Apprenticeship remains a first-choice

solution to addressing skills shortages,” says Sarah Watts-Rynard, executive director of CAF-FCA. “Over the last decade, the apprenticeship community has expended tremendous resources on this effort. Gauging how youth perceive the trades today tells us where we’ve seen successes and provides a roadmap to inform future initiatives.” Survey results indicate youth are more open to considering a skilled trades career than they were in past, are Continued on page 8

more aware career options, have better access to information and value the contribution of tradespeople. “We can definitely see improvement in youth awareness and attitudes,” Watts-Rynard said. “At the same time, we’re seeing the need for stronger messages around opportunities for women and better outreach to parents and others who provide career direction to students.” Read the full report at www.caf-fca. org.

AYCE, CIIA Announce Funding

N

imo Abdulkadir of the AYCE Employment Services and John Norris of the collision repair trade association, CIIA, recently announced two new initiatives to help the industry and young workers. The first is an opportunity for shops to access up to $6,800 in employment incentives and a further $1,000 in training subsidies on the successful hiring of a young person into the industry. Because most of those new employees become apprentices in the compulsory licensed trade of Auto Body and Collision Damage Repairer, the employer is also eligible for a further up to $10,000 tax credit per year in the form of the Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit. Employers simply contact AYCE in Toronto or Mohawk College’s Employment Services in Hamilton or CES Fanshawe College in London to enroll, find their young worker and participate in the incentive funding. Workers with any interest in the industry or secondary school experience are invited to also submit their names with these publicly funded agencies to be available for hiring. In addition, AYCE Employment Services will help employers prescreen qualified candidates in the GTA. Employers can call AYCE at 416 491 7000 x 203. AYCE Employment Services will match available workers to the needs of the collision repair industry and help

handle the incentive grants providing continuing monitoring and support. Workers looking to enter industry apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship, auto painting, detailing or any collision repair career are welcome to register with AYCE in the GTA area. In the Hamilton and London area, applicants can check in with their local College employment service.

Enterprise Adds Self-Service to Priority Pass Program

A

n enhanced version of Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s Priority Pass program lets replacement rental customers enjoy the benefits of technology while experiencing a new level of personalized service. Priority Pass simplifies and expedites the process of arranging for a replacement rental car after a collision, a process that can be daunting and time-consuming for an inexperienced renter. As first launched, Priority Pass allowed an insurance company or bodyshop to send Enterprise an authorization for a replacement rental

using Enterprise’s Automated Rental Management System (ARMS). Enterprise would then contact the customer to complete the rental authorization and schedule a time to pick up the customer at the body shop and drive him to the rental branch to complete the reservation process and be on his way. Introduced more than two years ago, the Priority Pass program led immediately to improved customer satisfaction scores and continues to do so, not only for Enterprise but also for its insurance and bodyshop partners.

Now the enhanced Priority Pass, which also is mobile enabled, further expedites the rental transaction by adding a self-service option so customers can complete the reservation process online. Enterprise sends the customer an email with a link that enables him to pre-register for Priority Pass so that he can get into his rental car and drive away almost immediately upon arriving at the branch. Rather than spending time on paperwork, the Enterprise representative now can focus on familiarizing the customer with his rental vehicle and answering his questions.

Ontario Drivers’ Love-Hate Relationship With Winter

0

ntario drivers have a love-hate relationship with snow tires – they love how they make winter driving so much safer, yet they hate putting them on their cars, suggests a new survey commissioned for Centennial College’s School of Transportation. Seventy-nine per cent of Ontarians who drive say snow tires create a safer winter driving experience, with 87% correctly understanding that even allwheel-drive vehicles need them. But only 53% of drivers in the province install them on their own cars. The usage rate of winter tires is similar between the sexes: 52% of men versus 55% of women. However, 47% of women say they get nervous and stressed about driving in the winter, while only 28% of men admit they are uneasy driving in snow and ice. Eastern Ontario drivers are the most likely to install winter tires, with 69% installing them each year, by far the highest rate and perhaps influenced by the fact neighbouring Quebec is the only province to legally require drivers to use winter tires. “The vast majority of Ontario drivers know they should use winter tires, but only half do so,” says Centennial College automotive professor Stephen Leroux. “This truly is a conundrum for all road users.”

Other survey results include: • To avoid driving in snow, 43% stayed home from work or school, 38% cancelled a social engagement and 20% missed a medical appointment; • 40% of male drivers strongly agree they are confident in their winter driving skills, compared with 16% of women; • 42% of drivers whose personal income exceeds $100,000 a year are strongly confident in their driving skills;

• 44% of drivers 18 to 34 say winter driving makes them stressed, dropping to 31% for those 55-plus. “In addition to installing four matching snow tires, Ontario drivers ought to have licensed mechanics ensure their cars are ready for winter,” says Leroux. “This is a small price to pay for potentially saving your life and the lives of your passengers, not to mention other motorists.” Continued on page 12

Fix Auto Adds Ontario Locations

ix Auto is proud to welcome two new strategic partners: Frank Keseru from Fix Auto Kingsville and Dan Lorbetskie from Fix Auto Ottawa Airport. Located at 1717 Division Road N. in Kingsville, Ontario, Fix Auto Kingsville first opened its doors in 1979 and moved to its current location in 1983. Founder Frank Keseru started the company on a simple principle: “Take care of your customers and they will come back. Through Fix Auto Kingsville. this principle, we have grown from a one-car garage operation to one of the largest car repair facilities in Essex County,” says Keseru. It is on this approach that the bodyshop has been through an expansion and upgrade four times to be able to service local customers, fleet repairs and insurance collision claims. Located at 2638 Mac Street in Ottawa, Fix Auto Ottawa Airport is the second most recent location to join the Fix Auto network in Ontario. Owner Dan Lorbetskie has been in the collision trade for close to 20 years, starting his collision repair career while still in high school. It is during these years where Lorbetskie learned all aspects of the production side of the business ultimately leading him to an auto body apprentice licence from Algonquin College. He then went on to work in a custom shop gaining experience in high end painting and attention to detail and later working in a flat rate shop learning the in’s and out’s of collision repair in a fast paced environment. Lorbetskie’s passion for the industry also led him to take a teaching position at a local college to share his passion for the industry with young people. Husband and wife team, the Lorbetskies are also the owners of Fix Auto Gloucester. The separate experiences of the Lorbetskies over the years have made them great business partners in this industry. Their endless energy and commitment towards their business and staff continues to drive their success as a team.

Appointments Jon Arnett has been appointed as general manager/managing director, Carfax Canada. Arnett brings over a decade of automotive experience in Canada to Carfax, including time in the vehicle history industry. Arnett will oversee efforts to continue expanding the scope of information reported to Carfax and the availability of Carfax Reports throughout the provinces. Arnett has worked extensively with dealers as well as senior executives at auto manufacturers in both Canada and the U.S during his time in the auto industry. He also is fluent in French. Mirka Abrasives Canada is pleased to announce the addition of Yves Roy to its team as National Sales Director. In his new position, Yves will be responsible for managing the activities of Mirka’s sales team. He can be reached at 514-618-9379. T

here are many excellent software systems on the market today that streamline every aspect of the day-to-day running of the bodyshop, from systematizing the estimating process to running the minutiae of a successful business. Some of these systems are so powerful and multifaceted that a surprising number of shops simply aren’t aware of how much they can do to improve productivity. We chatted with some of the major collision repair industry software providers to explain how these systems – including, possibly, the system already in place in your shop, as it operates now or with a few key enhancements – can make life in the bodyshop better. Terry Allen is president of Speedy Collision, a chain of nine repair shops in Alberta. Whereas many collision repair professionals are experts at collision repair rather than computer technology, Allen is unique in that he is a former entrepreneur in the information technology field, so he is more aware of what technology can and can’t do for bodyshops than most. “We’ve all experience the wait times with getting vehicles repaired and when you have a collision, the backlog to get an estimate – let alone the repair completed – [can be] lengthy,” observes Allen. “Our technology and consumer backgrounds allowed us to look at this industry in a different way. We analyzed the industry, including the consumer and supplier components. We immediately realized that a revised process driven with technology could influence the customer experience with collision repair.” At the heart of any good system today is its ability to make communications among stakeholders – the shop, the insurer, and the consumer – better. As Mark Fairhurst, marketing director at Audatex Canada, points out, “Experiencing an accident and going through the repair process is an anxious time in a vehicle owner’s life. Anything that can help shops better manage their customers’ expectations will pay off immediately. At the same time, shops need to keep insurance partners informed as to the progress of the repair.”

In the modern world, the ways that we all communicate with each other are proliferating. Being able to communicate with the customer in their preferred medium is crucial, not only for the consumer but for the shop. A good shop system will be able to communicate with the customer in whatever way they feel most comfortable: text, email, online, instant message, or even Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.” Fairhurst continues, “Consumers benefit from these options as it provides transparency into the repair and lets them share their experience with friends and family. Repair shops benefit with fewer phone calls, enhanced customer service, and greater marketing exposure via social media.” Mike Jerry of Mitchell Systems points out that a lot of communications can be agebased; while an over-50 person might still reach for the phone to call the shop and check on the status of the repair, many younger people consider that to be equivalent to writing with a chisel and stone tablet. They much prefer communications by tweet, BBM message, email, text, online and social media communications. Web-based solutions (like Mitchell’s) can send updates to all stakeholders simultaneously. Furthermore, these systems remove the difficulties of multiple insurer platforms as well. “Various insurance companies will have their own SOPs in the ways they receive data,” Jerry points out. “Mitchell was one of the founding companies to utilize the CIECA standard, which means the shop can write an estimate in Mitchell, and any shop management system can receive the information efficiently no matter what the insurer’s preferred platform.” Frank Terlep of Summit eMarketing Sherpas explains that Summit’s emarketPlace platform provides the collision repair facility with virtually every type of Web, social and mobile communication, sales, marketing and customer service solution the consumer or insurer would use at every stage before, during and after the repair. “The platform includes a standard and mobile website, an automated unsold estimate sales and follow-up system, email/text/social media and mobile vehicle status, photo Continued on page 16

and video sharing, two-way email and text messaging, social media integration (Facebook, twitter, Google+, LinkedIn), module apps for both Android and Apple smartphones and tablets, email, text- and social-mediabased CSI, reviews and ratings, online reputation management, integrated CRM system for consumers, brokers, insurers and dealers, plus an automated customer referral and retention system that keeps the collision repair facility connected with the consumer automatically for up to 10 years after the accident.” Progi president Diane Chaine agrees that streamlining and making the communications process easy and transparent for all interested parties is a key part of doing business today. This applies not just to keeping the consumer (and the insurance company) completely up to speed on the repair as it progresses, but starts right at the beginning with the estimating progress. A key feature of Progi’s just-introduced ProgiSync is its Web-based calendar format, which starts with allowing interested parties – whether it’s the claims adjuster, the appraiser, or consumer – to book estimate appointments with a few keystrokes. Then a related product, ProgiLog, lets the consumer or insurer go online whenever they like and check the status of the repair as it goes through the process. The system is configured slightly differently for insurers and consumers, but both achieve the same goal: to make the entire process from first notice of claim to the completion of the repair easy, transparent, and efficient. “What the bodyshop does is define the steps,” explains Chaine. “Each time there’s a change, it’s uploaded, so the consumer can actually ‘see’ the shop working on their car. It’s reassuring to consumers to see how the repair is progressing, and saves both the shop and consumers time in phone calls.” While communications are a key component of these systems, some new offerings go beyond the ability to make communications among consumers, insurance partners, and the shop easy and productive to transact.

While communications are a key component of these systems, some new offerings go beyond the ability to make communications among consumers, insurance partners and the shop easy and productive to transact. As Anthony Giagnacovo, managing director, Audatex Canada, explains, “We’ve addressed the number-one complaint [from shops], which is double-keying. From the estimating process, you can analyze entire parts procurement requirements, real-time inventory (i.e., parts sourcing), right into shop process via AudaShop Manager software, to the consumer through our AudaWatch program.” Giagnacovo points out that the integrated nature of the various components of the Audatex platform provides a straight-through process that is unique in the marketplace. Giagnacovo points out that another important component is being able to track data, manage feedback through CSI scores and actually provide analytics that can help guide future business decisions and allow the shop to see where it stands in relation to the industry at large, for example, information that can be utilized in a host of ways. “Our InsightPlus solution is an analytic business tool that extracts information from any system, and can provide a wide range of measurements to provide data analysis for the shop. It also incorporates industry comparative data, which enables the shop to measure

its performance not only in relation to its own data [i.e. over several quarters, for example], but in terms of the industry in general.” Knowing this information, says Giagnacovo, provides a context of sorts: a drop in sales may indicate a weakness that needs further investigation, for example, or just a reflection of overall softening in the local industry as a whole. “Data alone is nothing,” says Giagnacovo. “But being able to use it to produce results is everything.” In the case of Speedy Collision, Allen and his associates embarked on an extensive mission to find software that allowed the company to manage all aspects of the collision repair process and ensure that it integrated seamlessly into their existing estimating software. The company ultimately chose Audatex’s AudaShop Manager because of its versatility and the integration not only with other products in the Audatex family, but with other interfaces used by insurers, accounting systems, and parts suppliers. They also liked features such as the intuitive graphical user interface of the system and its breadth of platforms with which to communicate with customers. Ultimately, the goal of a great shop software system should be its ease of use, versatility, power, and ability to enhance the customer experience as well as shop efficiency. Being able to communicate with the consumer and the insurer in whatever platform they choose, as well as employing estimating software that sets this important initial step into motion efficiently, are the key considerations for many shops. But the best systems today can provide a lot more for the shop, from streamlining shop processes, to keeping up with changes to vehicle technology, to enhancing marketing activity, to providing business data that the shop can apply directly to future decisions. Being able to make the best use of these tools is more than optional. Increasingly, as the collision repair industry becomes more and more competitive, it could be the key to survival.

Representing mostly small businesses, the exhibitors were able to connect with more than 60,000 buyers from around the world. “We’re seeing more exhibitors take part in programs such as the New Products Showcase,” says Kersting. “This is an indication to us that exhibitors are looking for and taking advantage of ways to get the most out of their show experience. They are actively looking to connect with new and existing buyers. More than 2,000 entries were submitted into the Showcase, with the best-of-thebest receiving special recognition.” The SEMA Annual Market Report, available exclusively to SEMA members at www.sema.org/automotive-aftermarket-research, estimates there were $31.32B in retail sales in 2012, up from less than $28B during the height of the recession in 2009. Based on the excitement and attendance at the 2013 SEMA Show, this year promises to continue that upward trend.

MIRKA’s Optimized Surface Preparation System (OSP) is truly unique thanks to an innovative combination of high-tech abrasives, tools and processes. The OSP system is simple, provides stable quality and significantly less rework which increases productivity and efficiency.

ASRW 2103:

New Format Wins with Attendees, Exhibitors A

utomotive Service & Repair Week (ASRW), consisting of NACE and CARS, was held Oct. 16-18, 2013 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, and proved to be a success with both showgoers and exhibitors. While final attendance figures were still being tallied at press time, over 170 exhibitors representing a wide cross section of the automotive service and repair industry were on hand for the show part of the conference. New for the 2013 event, Automotive Service & Repair Week (ASRW) shifted to a two-day expo, with three days of education. The change came in response to feedback gathered from loyal exhibiting companies as well as attendees, and allowed participants to enjoy the same number of expo hours as in the past, but streamlined into two action-packed days. Among the highlights of this year’s event, the ASRW Industry Forum panel discussion (always a popular and significant part of the ASRW line-up) and the creation of a new on-floor networking event were well received by attendees. According to Ron Pyle, ASA president, this year’s modifications to the ASRW structure reflected feedback received from both exhibitors and attendees. “After diligently compiling, researching and examining feedback from our loyal participants, these changes reflect the culmination of months of work,” Pyle said. “This new show structure was carefully crafted to foster a deeper level of networking and community among attendees and within the industry, and provides a solution to a longtime industry need identified through our research.” New format, large crowd dominate festive event The annual Welcome Party for attendees and exhibitors was held on the show floor immediately after the expo closed on Wednesday. All exhibitors and attendees were invited and encouraged to attend. “ASA was thrilled with the turnout of the Welcome Party, and excited to see exhibitors and attendees continuing to network throughout the evening – even after the party ended,” said Dan Risley, ASA executive director. “We’re so pleased at the numerous positive comments we’ve received about the changes we made to this event.” Mike Anderson Headlines Opening General Session/Collision Industry Forum The Opening General Session/Collision Industry Forum was held on Thursday, Oct. 17. Sponsored by Axalta Coating Systems, it combined the powerfully motivating message of a traditional keynote presentation with the industry-specific focus of a forum. The session, “The Future is Not Set in Stone,” was led by wellknown industry expert Mike Anderson, the second-generation

bodyshop owner and consultant, who charmed the audience with anecdotes, humour and real-world advice for their businesses. At the conclusion of the session, Anderson was presented with the prestigious 2013 Joe Jackson Industry Champion Award, by Axalta Coating Systems. The award recognizes individuals in the collision repair industry who reflect admirably on the industry through outstanding leadership, charity, or humanitarian works. Third Annual MSO Symposium Back By Popular Demand Returning for a third year to the ASRW lineup, the MultiShop Operator (MSO) Symposium was held October 16 to a sold-out crowd of 275 MSOs with two or more locations. The day-long event featured high-end content specific to collision repair MSOs and an evening networking reception. “We had the combined benefit of collision repairers and capital market leaders, as well as expert speakers on leadership and decision-making contribute to our interactive event that focused on the current and future state of the U.S. collision repair industry,” said Vincent Romans, The Romans Group, producer of the MSO Symposium. Designed for MSOs who aspire to improve their skills and knowledge, the symposium featured six sessions on topics of interest to the MSO market segment, ranging from industry consolidation to the nature and secrets of great leadership. The MSO Symposium was so popular with attendees that the event was full from start to finish. Several attendees commented it was the main reason they came to Las Vegas to attend ASRW. The 2013 MSO Symposium was produced in memory of Matthew Ohrnstein, who produced the event in 2011 and 2012. Classes at ASRW 2013 A broad range of courses covering a wide variety of both management and technical subjects brought together NACE and CARS attendees with experts from within the industry and beyond. ASRW’s educational sessions also included I-CAR supplemental training and the annual MSO Symposium for qualified collision shops. Planning for ASRW/CARS/NACE 2014 is already well underway, with the conference planned for July 31-August 2, 2014 and the Exposition for July 31-August 1. Both events are planned to take place during Industry Week 2014, at the Cobo Center, Detroit, Michigan.

AAIA’s Collision Repair Market Outlook

T

he Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association’s (AAIA) 2013 Digital Collision Repair Trends report, an online 67page descriptive analysis of data compiled from primary AAIA research, (U.S.) federal government, and independent research data sources, highlights the size and scope of the U.S. collision industry, including the paint, body and equipment (PBE) aftermarket, with a brief analysis of the Canadian collision industry. It also includes analyses of factors influencing the collision industry, automotive collision insurance coverage, and the Direct Repair Program (DRP). According to this year’s report, collision repair-related sales by aftermarket repair shops grew 2.3% in 2012 to $39.7 billion. This growth was driven by several factors such as increased number of registered vehicles, increased road congestion causing a higher frequency of accidents per year, and increased collision repair cost per vehicle. The report also reveals an optimistic statistic as well, showing that despite a significant increase in vehicles on the road, vehicle crashes that caused injuries or fatalities has declined steadily since 1990. What follows are excerpts from the report, with an emphasis on trends in the Canadian collision repair industry. Copies of the new 2013 Digital Collision Repair Trends report are now available – cost is $125 for AAIA members and $250 for non-members. To order, visit www.aftermarket.org and click “Market Intelligence,” or call AAIA market intelligence at 301-654-6664. The Collision Repair Industry in Canada The Canadian collision repair industry is a diverse mix of organizations that operate in every part of the country to repair roughly one million vehicles with claimed collision damage per year. The industry includes collision repair facilities, PBE suppliers, automobile insurance companies, educators/trainers, and other related industry segments. Collision repair bodywork in Canada varies with vehicle age. Based on available data, close to two-fifths (38%) of Canadian vehicles receiving professional bodywork (DIFM) are

between eight and 12 years old. Another quarter of DIFM bodywork is attributed to vehicles more than 12 years old (25%). Canadian Bodywork Suppliers: Market Breakdown The Canadian DIFM bodywork market is driven by three major entities: independent repair shops, new car dealers, and specialty shops. Based on available data, independent repair shops (38%), specialty shops (20%) and new car dealers (17%) comprise threequarters (75%) of professional bodywork in Canada. Auto parts stores, service stations, tire, and other types of retail outlets in Canada account for the remaining one-quarter of the professional bodywork market. The Canadian collision industry generally comprises automotive repair and maintenance services. The number of bodyshops remained nearly consistent from 2005 to 2009 with a dip during the recession of 2007-8, ranging from a low of 21,869 shops in 2008 to a high of 22,856 shops in 2005. In 2009, the figure was 22,561 shops in operation in Canada. Canadian Bodywork Market Revenues The Canadian automotive repair and maintenance services industry earned $14.2 billion in 2011, up 4.2% from 2010. During that time span, operating expenses grew by 3.3% to $13.2 billion. Salaries, wages, and benefits accounted for 29.3% of the total operating expense. Average annual operating profit rose from 6.3% in 2010 to 7.2% in 2011. Automotive Aftermarket: Employment Figures A total of 460,263 people were employed in the Canadian aftermarket industry as a whole in 2012, up 1.6% from 2011. The largest employer was the automobile dealer sector, accounting for 28.8% of total employment. Six out of seven sectors experienced job growth, with motor vehicle parts manufacturing posting the highest job growth (4.6%). The growth was offset by a job loss of 1.9% in the tire dealers sector. OEM Vs. Aftermarket Parts Demand Analysis of the Canadian collision industry by

Mitchell International shows that parts accounted for 44.9% of the average value per repairable vehicle appraisal. It also noted that while the prices of aftermarket, remanufactured and Like Kind and Quality (LKQ) parts have been increasing, OEM parts use has declined significantly. Canadian parts suppliers, like their U.S. counterparts, have been reducing their collision parts inventories in response to the declining trend in OEM parts use. Research indicates a gradual increase of OEM parts from 2011 through 2012, culminating in a decrease of 75.9% in Q4 2012 to 74.2% in Q2 2013. Aftermarket parts used in collision repairs shows an upward trend from 12.7% in Q4 2012 to 13% in Q2 2013. While remanufactured parts showed a slight improvement from 2.8% in Q4 2012 to 3.1% in Q2 2013, it is below the percentage of parts used during the same quarter in 2012. Used parts accounted for 9.7% of the total market in Q2 2013, compared to 11.1% in Q2 of 2011. Collisions and Casualties 1990-2010 Analysis of collisions and casualties from 1990 to 2010 show that fatal collisions, defined as vehicle crashes that resulted in at least one death, have been steadily declining since it peaked at 3,963 in 1990 and reached its nadir in 2010. The number of fatal crashes has declined at an average annual rate of 2.8% between 1990 and 2010. In 2010, there were 2,227 fatal crashes compared to 3,963 in 1990, representing a 43.8% decrease. (Accidents that involved personal injuries were also significantly reduced during this time period, from 178,515 to 123,141.)

-CAR Canada is releasing three new courses over the coming weeks, designed to cover full and partial replacement and sectioning, as well as a view of upcoming vehicle technologies. Replacement of Steel Unitized Structures (SPS10) Replacement of Steel Unitized Structures delivers information on removing and

replacing spot welds and OEM laser welds, when to replace at factory seams, and when to fully replace a steel unitized part. It deals with considerations for disassembling an assembly in the absence of vehicle maker specifications. Students will understand the removal and replacement of spot welds – different options for replacing spot welds, such as repair spot welds, GMA (MIG) plug

the COLD

It’s no secret that your current paint system was designed in a lab to work great at 75 degrees with 35% humidity but the reality is many shops never get close to 75 degrees in the winter. SPI’s Polar Accelerator is the answer to a lot of cold shop’s problems in the winter. Use Polar Accelerator at a rate of 1-4oz per mixed quart in ANY 2K primer, clear or single stage paint. Being a non-acid product say goodbye to the brittleness, solvent popping and dieback problems associated with acid accelerators. Many shops even choose to pre-accelerate their entire new gallons of 2K primer as they buy them. Turbo Primer is a collision shop favourite in part because it can be sanded in 30-45 minutes @ 60-70 degrees. Turbo Primer is a sealer grade 2K primer that can be mixed 4:1 for high building or 4:1:1 for typical building properties. Of course our Polar Accelerator can still be added to speed up the sanding time if needed. Available in Black, White and Gray.

welds, and MIG brazing, which is gaining in popularity among vehicle makers. The class continues by using actual vehicle maker procedures for replacing parts at factory seams and also explores some of the reasons why some parts need to be completely replaced. The class will also discuss situations that technicians may encounter, such as materials other than steel and how to work around, and with, sensors. Sectioning of Steel Unitized Structures (SPS11) Sectioning of Steel Unitized Structures begins by explaining why I-CAR has adapted its position on sectioning and why general sectioning guidelines no longer apply. Students will understand the various types of sectioning joints used by vehicle makers and deal with considerations for sectioning versus part replacement. Students will participate in a classroom-based vehicle-specific sectioning activity. This portion of the class contains information on how to begin sectioning repairs, including what to do before sectioning repairs, preparing the vehicle, understanding adjacent part removal, and verifying the correct replacement part. Information will also be presented on measuring for cut line, cutting techniques, welding, and working with adhesively bonded joints. The class continues by examining the various types of sectioning joints used by vehicle makers. Props and discussions will better help students to understand the similarities and differences between these common joints. The instructor will also discuss what is involved with finishing a sectioning repair. Vehicle Technology and Trends 2014 (NEW14) Vehicle Technology and Trends 2014 describes features and technologies that distinguish newer model vehicles from their predecessors. The class covers recognition of new vehicle materials and designs, safety features, collision-warning systems, and alternative fuel systems. Technicians will gain insights into repair procedures for technology trends such as aluminum structures, ultrahigh-strength steel, and carbon fibre. Each of these four-hour courses is available at a cost of between $100 (Gold Class) and $135 (non-Gold Class) per student, plus tax. Book your training today by visiting www.i-car.ca.

The special tools packaged with the OSP system can shrink the repair area by well over 20% compared with conventional repair techniques currently in use. This results in reduced labour and in a significant saving of subsequent paint consumption (because of the smaller repair surface) resulting in a car repairer improving his profit significantly. CCIF Edmonton Meeting Report The Canadian Collision Industry Forum held its fall meeting at the Fairmont Macdonald Hotel, Edmonton, Alta., on Saturday, September 28th, 2013. The following are excerpts from reports presented at that meeting. The next Forum will be held in Toronto on Saturday, February 4, 2014.

Chairman’s Remarks

Tom Bissonnette (Parr Auto Body) Tom opened the meeting with some positive comments about the co-operation between collision repairers and the principal insurer in his home province of Saskatchewan. The provincial trade association representing collision repairers had engaged an agency to study the industry and had used the resulting report to support discussions with government representatives on how to sustain a healthy industry capable of meeting insurer and vehicle owner needs. This led to further discussions with the insurer and agreements to work together on critical issues, such as improving the ability of collision repairers to attract and retain staff.

Changes at CCIF and New Ways to Take Action

Larry Jefferies (CARSTAR Automotive Canada) Larry explained that since CCIF was designed as an open forum, it had not wished to develop a formal organization and structure. However, in order to provide consistency and direction, a Chairman had been appointed by the key people involved in establishing CCIF, who helped form what later became known as the Chairman’s Council. The time has come for CCIF to evolve in order to keep meeting the needs of the industry. At the start of 2014 the administration of CCIF will be taken on by the Automotive Industries Association (AIA), through which CCIF was originally created, and which already manages the national training body, I-CAR Canada.

The Chairman’s Council will be renamed as the CCIF Steering Committee and will comprise: 4 collision repair representatives, including networks; 2 supplier representatives; 2 insurance representatives; 2 OE manufacturer representatives; AIA’s director, collision programs /director, CCIF Skills Program; and AIA’s senior director, industry programs. The role of the CCIF Steering Committee will include: guiding the establishment of priority areas for action and ensuring the continued success of industry networking events and projects; representing all CCIF stakeholders; operating a succession plan with members serving staggered terms of two years, renewable upon the recommendation of the Committee; setting term limits of four years to ensure turnover; being run on a consensus model. Criteria for membership and a formal selection process have been established. Applicants must apply in writing and will be selected by CCIF’s current Chairman’s Council members by early December.

Choose to Use Recycled Parts

Ian Hope (Alberta Automotive Recyclers and Dismantlers Association) AARDA members recognise the importance of the collision repair industry as a major customer, said Ian. He proposed closer collaboration with repairers and insurers in order to better understand their needs and how they make their choices on which parts to use. Recyclers play a key role in the collision repair industry and Ian suggested they should become more involved with CCIF, promoting recycled parts as the right

and responsible choice, as well as the economic choice. Collision repairers should have confidence that when dealing with AARDA members, they can be sure that correct processes are being followed in the dismantling and storage of all parts and fluids. Since vehicles are so large and consume so much resources, there is clear recognition that it makes sense to recycle as many of vehicle components as possible. Ian looked forward to collaboration between all stakeholders that would increase acceptance of recycled parts as the green and ethical choice.

CCIF Skills Program Attracts Thousands with Onsite Painting at National Skills Competition

Leanne Jefferies (CCIF Skills Program) Leanne spoke about the continuing success of the CCIF Skills Program and why it matters. Canadians are being made increasingly aware of the many different skilled trades career opportunities. Other skilled trades are paying attention and increasing their own promotional activity through TV commercials, radio, billboards and magazine articles. So as the competition from other trades intensifies, it is vital that collision repair continues to maintain the high profile that it has achieved at Skills Competitions, standing out from the 40+ other trades fighting for the attention of young people. Leanne acknowledged the success of the program as an outcome of the tremendous team work between Skills Canada, industry stakeholder groups and educators. Just a few years ago there were no provincial painting Continued on page 38 www.bodyshopbiz.com l January 2014 l Bodyshop 37

competitions, but now eight provinces hold them and over 300 industry volunteers work to ensure that they run smoothly and showcase the industry in a positive light. In 2012 the breakthrough was made in bringing the car painting competition onsite and making it a big draw for the 10,000 students attending the National Skills Competition in Edmonton. Leanne then showed a video of the 2013 National Skills Competition held in Vancouver, once again with the fully transparent onsite spray booth that provided the thousands of visitors with a truly close-up and personal view of the young people working under pressure to demonstrate their painting skills. They were also able to see the related bodywork competition alongside the painting activity. In addition to thanking CCIF Skills Program sponsors, Leanne thanked ARA’s Rene Young for demonstrating his skills as a videographer in producing the Vancouver competition video.

Making the Most of Apprenticeship

Doug Harbak (Apprenticeship and Industry Training, Alberta) Alberta has 50 trades, of which 19, including Autobody, are compulsory, meaning that an individual must be a registered apprentice or a certified journeyperson. As an apprenticeship consultant for collision repair and several other skilled trades, Doug shared some of the feedback he had picked up from apprentices leaving the industry. The most common reason for leaving was that their employers either did not encourage them to attend technical training for advancement, or didn’t allow them to attend training due to workload. The second most common reason for leaving or contemplating it was employers promising to indenture individuals, but then procrastinating in the process of signing and submitting the application. Doug mentioned that one of the main reasons collision repairers are facing challenges in recruiting and retaining employers is that, at least in Alberta, the industry is competing with

other trades that are paying secondyear apprentices in excess of $30 per hour.

Conversation with New Industry Entrants

Mike Bryan (CCIF) As a follow-up to Doug Harbak’s presentation, Mike Bryan invited two young industry entrants to share their perspective of the industry. He spoke with Lisa Little, a second-year painting apprentice, and Cecile Bukmeier, a certified painter and Gold Medal Winner of the Alberta Skills Competition and National Skills Competition. Mike asked what had prompted both these young ladies to get into collision repair. They replied that it was their love of cars and their fascination for the artistry involved in returning a mangled vehicle into its pre-accident condition. While they enjoyed using their skills as painters, both saw their future as business owners and hoped it would be possible for them to stay in the industry. Their realistic view of why that might not happen was their uncertainty about earning enough to be able to buy a home and live a reasonably comfortable life. When asked what advice they would give to employers taking on apprentices, they echoed the comments of Doug Harbak regarding technical training and treating apprentices with integrity. They also advised employers to pay pre-employment students for their work and allocate time to mentor young entrants. As females in a traditional male environment, they recognized that there could be a certain amount of negative attitude, but had been surprised at the extent of it. They felt it essential that owners take action on inappropriate behaviour; otherwise young females would leave and take their skills and energy to an industry where attitudes are more progressive.

The Future of CCIF and the OEMs

David Adams (Global Automakers of Canada) David explaining how OEMs in Canada have come to recognize the value of

involvement with CCIF, as vehicles have become increasingly complex and the use of advanced technology has created new repair issues. These issues have drawn attention to the disconnect between the collision repair industry and OEMs and raised concerns about the potential ramifications of improperly repaired vehicles. With collision repairers, insurers and OEMs all having a vested interest in their common customers, it was essential that they work together to overcome the disconnect, said David. OEMs would seek to cultivate a better dialogue with insurers and collision repairers and they would be looking more closely at repair capacity and the use of correct repair information and practices. The OEMs’ goals would be to ensure correct repairs to OEM specifications, to help retain vehicle values, and to work with the industry to ensure the utmost safety in collision-repaired vehicles. David concluded by recognizing that these goals must be compatible with repairer profitability, access to repair information / standards and training. He looked forward to building relationships and working together on mutual goals.

I-CAR Canada’s Gold Class Gaining Ground

Andrew Shepherd (Automotive Industries Association) Andrew reported that I-CAR live seats were at 4189 ytd, compared with a total of 6204 for the whole of 2012. Among those, Gold Class seats numbered 2116 ytd, compared with 3263 for the full year 2012. Over 51% of trainees came from Gold Class shops. Current I-CAR developments included work on the re-establishment of I-CAR training in British Columbia. There was other work underway in the U.S. to update I-CAR’s welding qualification and also to develop 8-10 new courses to support OEMcertified repair networks for Chrysler, VW, Honda, Nissan, Infiniti, Toyota, BMW, Porsche, and Jaguar. Andrew was also pleased to announce delivery partnerships with NAIT and Color Compass.
