CCIF Montreal Report: A Glimpse Into The Future

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) expo, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from November 4 to November 7, 2014, just gets bigger, bolder, and a little more outrageous with each passing year. This year’s event drew over 60,000 international and domestic attendees from all sectors of the automotive and collision repair industry. And of course there were many cool kustoms on show.

Vehicle technology, telematics, and training took centre stage at CCIF Montreal on September 26, 2014. Speakers shared their expertise and offered a glimpse into how technology might impact the future of the industry. It was a meeting packed with valuable information, great networking, and the opportunity to speak directly with industry experts.

YOUR FIVE-POINT PLAN FOR 2015 With the dawn of every new year there is always lots of talk about resolutions. “What’s your New Year’s Resolution?” will be the most asked question over the next month or so. Most people have an answer at hand, too: “lose weight,” “get into better shape,” or the classic “quit smoking.” As admirable as all those promises are, I’m going to suggest a different approach that has little to do with the change of the calendar and more to do with a change of thinking. Rather than picking one particular, personal focus for the year, have a plan. A five-point plan to be exact, covering personal, professional, and “spiritual,” if you like, over the next year. The only rule is that you can’t combine what you do for one point to cover another, so you will actually have to come up with five initiatives. Do something for yourself: At the risk of sounding selfish, you need to take care of yourself, both physically and psychologically, or you’ll never get to the other points. So if there is something that will help on those levels, make a commitment to do it. It could be something small like taking a few minutes regularly to play that guitar that’s been leaning up in the corner, taking that long-delayed trip, or maybe it is to lose weight and quit smoking. The only rule is that it has to make you feel better about yourself and your life, so you can be in a better place to take on the world. Do something for your family: Don’t just buy something, do something for them. Maybe it’s helping a grown son renovate his home; perhaps it’s regularly taking your toddling grandkids for an extended stay so their parents can recapture some adulthood. Maybe it’s organizing a family reunion. It could be big or small, but should be experiential, rather than material. It’s about building memories, not buying stuff. Do something for your staff: Without a solid group of employees, your business would be a mess. Make sure you do something for your staff to improve their lot. It could be recommitting to training, improving their working conditions, getting a benefits plan (or a better one) in place, or doing something to improve working conditions. Maybe it’s something small like a regular employee lunch, which is nice, but try not to cop out and just do the easy thing; if you know something that needs doing, this is the year to do it. Do something for your business: Take a look around your shop, and your ledger, and decide what you need, not just what you feel you can easily handle. You should be looking at where you should invest in the future of your business, and like any investment there is an element of faith. What’s important here is that’s it’s about taking control and building capabilities for the future. If the load feels a bit much for you to bear at times, remember you have staff and family to help too. Do something for your community: This is a no-brainer for most in this industry. For this one you can get everyone involved, or just go solo. Maybe you make a donation to a food bank, maybe you do something with your church, or maybe you support community events. You likely already do something, but try to add one for 2015 that involves your time and not just your pocketbook. It will be good for your soul. Together these five areas will make you feel better about yourself and those around you, and they will feel better about you. And that makes it all worth the effort. Axalta Releases 2014 Colour Report and Future Trends A xalta Coating Systems’ Global Automotive 2014 Colour Popularity Report has been released. The report, which has annually tracked regional automotive colour preferences since 1953, is the most comprehensive in the industry. This year’s report offers an introduction to Color Matrix, Axalta’s automotive colour forecast for use on future production vehicles. “Our Colour Popularity Report data not only allows us to see the colours most favoured by consumers but, more importantly, it enables us to forecast future trends. Every year, designers from our OEM customers depend on our advanced forecasting to make critical decisions regarding colour choices for their vehicle lineup two to four years in advance,” states David Fischer, vice-president of marketing for Axalta’s global light vehicle OEM business. The 2014 forecast includes a wide variety of colour types that will influence the global automotive market. The upcoming trends showcase four colour groups: pale hues, bright colours, muted versions, and dark shades. The matrix of colours is shown in fine or coarse metallics, solids, tintcoats, tricoats and pearlescent varieties. Advanced colour technologies from Axalta’s global research and development teams add further to the breadth of colour style

combinations. “Our global colour specialists formulate the next generation of coatings colours, as we continually aspire to meet the needs of the constantly changing market,” says Axalta colour marketing manager Nancy Lockhart. “At Axalta, we are committed to partnering with our customers to provide the best possible coatings, combining our perspective on future trends with manufacturers’ knowledge of their customers and markets. The result we continually strive for is an ever-evolving colour palette for automotive designers.” Global Automotive 2014 Colour Popularity Report Highlights The world colour data shows that white, at 29%, remains the most popular shade on vehicles for the fourth year in a row, though colour is showing signs of coming back with red, blue, and yellow each increasing by one percent. Black, at 19%, is still strong overall in the market, but has dropped one percent since last year. More 2014 colour popularity data and information on the Color Matrix trend categories can be found at www.axaltacs.com.

I‐CAR Launches Two All-New Refinish Courses

CAR has announced that two new courses are available to refinish technicians: Refinish Materials and Application Blending (REF08e) and Colour Theory, Mixing Toners, and Tinting (REF09). Refinish Materials and Application Blending (REF08e) is an interactive online course, worth two credit hours. It includes demonstrations on conventional blending and reverse blending, as well as using a blending additive and a blending bed. Other key topics are material application, including sealers, basecoats and the array of clearcoats available today. Colour Theory, Mixing Toners, and Tinting (REF09) will provide knowledge on how to evaluate colour, as well as discuss if and when tinting should be done. There are several interactive classroom activities throughout the course where students can apply and reinforce knowledge learned. This live, instructor‐led course is worth three credit hours. Both courses meet training requirements for refinish technicians, estimators and auto physical damage appraisers in I-CAR’s Professional Development Program (PDP). To register for either course, visit the I-CAR website at www.i‐car.ca, email collisiontraining@aiacanada.com or contact I‐CAR Customer Care through the AIA at 1‐800‐8082920.

Axalta Colour of the Year: Radiant Red

A

xalta Coating Systems launched the Axalta Automotive Colour of the Year 2015, Radiant Red, at SEMA in November, with the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet SS driven by four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon. The special paint scheme made its debut at the Phoenix International Raceway on Nov. 9, when Gordon competed in the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Eliminator Round. Radiant Red is made from Axalta’s Cromax Mosaic paint line. It also contains Axalta’s Vermeera high chroma technology and a sparkle effect. Axalta chose a red hue for several reasons. Axalta’s annual Global Automotive 2014 Color Popularity Report’s research indicates that the colour red is a growing trend in the marketplace. It’s been one of the top five most popular colours since 2010 and last year it grew by 3%.

CarProof Unveils New Vehicle Valuation Tool

arProof hosted its second annual Client Advisory Board Meeting in October in Muskoka, Ontario, to welcome key dealer, auction, corporate, lender and insurance partners to see the beautiful fall colours in this resort region and to offer insights into the company’s vision and strategy for 2015. The meeting highlighted CarProof’s commitment to adding value by becoming a multi-product, multi-vertical force in the automotive sector, the result of more than two years of strategic planning and investment. The company also revealed plans to launch a vehicle valuation tool that is anchored in using actual retail and wholesale transaction data to provide VIN-specific analysis. This critical data is information that until now hasn’t been available and will completely change the way vehicles are valued and ultimately bought and sold in Canada. In addition, CarProof officially announced the acquisition of Canadian Red Book, the leading valuation brand in the government and insurance verticals. CarProof plans to materially expand the Canadian Red Book solution over the next year. “What really matters in vehicle valuation is what cars are selling for and we have that data,” said Paul Antony, president and CEO of CarProof. “We’re entering into valuation because of the significant gaps in accuracy that exist right now. It’s a natural extension for CarProof and we’re approaching it from the same angle as we do our vehicle history reports: we want to use real transactional data to produce the most accurate and comprehensive valuation tool available in Canada.”

Fraud Charges Laid Against Toronto Towing Owner/Operator

nsurance provider Aviva Canada is applauding the Toronto Police Service for investigating alleged crimes by a Toronto tow company and bringing charges against the accused. “Fraud continues to hurt the insurance system, particularly in Ontario,” states Gordon Rasbach, vice-president of Aviva Canada’s Anti-Fraud unit. “Until we start seeing those trying to steal from the system hit with more serious consequences, insurance prices will continue to be higher than in other provinces.” On June 27, 2014, a dump truck registered to a commercial business insured by Aviva Canada was involved in a collision with two other vehicles in the west end of Toronto. Ontario Provincial Police attended the colli8 Bodyshop l January 2015 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

sion scene and directed all drivers involved to a nearby Collision Reporting Centre. The collision damage claim made to Aviva Canada included an invoice for $4,250, presented by Kam’s Towing & Recovery of Toronto. Following witness interviews and expert examination of the collision damage, it was determined that the towing services being claimed by Kam’s Towing & Recovery were completely fictitious. On November 13, 2014, police investigated and charged Jainauth Sounauth of Kam’s Towing & Recovery with False Pretence, Forgery, Uttering a Forged Document, and Fraud Under $5,000. He was scheduled to make his first court appearance in Toronto on December 19, 2014.

Says Rasbach, “Most major insurers are having a hard look at towing operators as part of their fraud prevention efforts. Historically, the towing industry has not been well regulated. Bill 15 – Fighting Fraud and Reducing Automobile Insurance Rates Act, which is currently in the Ontario Legislature, will increase oversight of the towing industry and provide more consumer protection. Aviva Canada urges the Government to pass Bill 15.” Help protect affordable insurance premiums for all Canadians by reporting potential fraud to Aviva Canada’s Fraud Information Centre — open 24/7. State Farm’s Bob Smart Remembered

A

gathering to celebrate the lives and mourn the loss of Robert Charles Smart of State Farm Insurance, Aurora, Ontario, and his sister, Lynda Mary Ann (nee Smart) Baynton, was held on November 1st. Bob and Lynda were tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident on Saturday, Oct. 18. They were en route from Toronto to Montreal to celebrate the birthday of their granddaughter and

niece, Chloé. A colleague and friend, Bob Porter of Fix Auto Aurora, wrote to Bodyshop magazine on his behalf. His letter reads, in part: “For those of you that didn’t know Bob on a professional level, he was a straight shooter, knowledgeable, patient with explanations when necessary, and above and beyond all, didn’t play the game others in his shoes did.

“Most relationships grew into friendships, and he was always willing to help you out. Bob touched a lot of our lives and will be sadly missed both by all who knew him.” The family is grateful for the superb level of care at scene of accident through care of family by the O.P.P. and medical personnel. Flowers to any Senior Home or donations in support of diabetes or heart charities are welcome.

ix Auto has launched a national advertising campaign featuring fresh creative and a broad media distribution strategy that it believes will help Canadians, um, swear less. “We wanted to be bold and clear,” says Carl Brabander, Fix Auto vice-president of marketing. “Anyone who’s been in a fender-bender knows how easy it can be to express our frustrations out loud – but when minor collisions occur, we want the first words out of your mouth to be ‘Fix Auto.’” In the creative for the campaign, dubbed “First Word,” unexpected collisions cause a visceral reaction in participants, but just before any word is articulated, the scene switches from a chaotic collision site to the peaceful interior of a Fix Auto body repair centre. The campaign will run in both French and English with a 12month outlook that will roll out across the country.

PPG Waterborne Shop Conversions Exceed 10,000

PG has now converted more than 10,000 collision centres in the United States and Canada to its waterborne systems, with the majority of these conversions taking place in National Rule areas rather than in low-VOC compliant regions. The announcement was made by PPG waterborne segment manager Tim Jones. According to Jones, more than 10,000

collision centres in North America are now using PPG waterborne products, with more than 50% of these shops in National Rule markets. This means most PPG customers choose to use waterborne products and systems even though they are not required to do so to meet low-VOC regulations. They do so voluntarily because they want to improve their productivity. www.bodyshopbiz.com l January 2015 l Bodyshop 11

New software systems that cater to the customer’s needs.

12 Bodyshop l January 2015 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

Maintenance and growth for today’s bodyshop depends on a heavy diet of digital solutions. Yet shops still find that some of these systems can prove overly complex and difficult to digest. Other programs may seem just right, but don’t react well with à la carte components. And, at times, the menu of options proffered by service providers appears overwhelming, not to mention expensive. The developers of business software are aware of these hazards, and are working hard to improve digital intuitiveness, ease of use, and cross-platform communication skills. We spoke with industry leaders about their latest offerings, focusing in on all these factors, as well as enhancements in productivity, efficiency and marketing. We also asked what trends might lie ahead. by L.C. Smith

ProgiSync / ProgiLog Progi Inc. Trois-Rivieres, Que. www.progi.com

Progi’s new Web-based tool, ProgiSync, allows shops, insurers, and customers to quickly and easily combine to book inspection appointments. Rolled out last year in the West, the system now covers all of Canada, and is already available in more than 700 shops. According to Ian Ward, performance consultant for Progi Inc., ProgiSync can integrate fully with current insurance claims software. Now, when a customer calls to report damage, the insurer is able to quickly view its list of preferred shops and, accessing shop calendars, book an estimating appointment while the customer is still on the phone. Once the appointment is booked, the system sends an immediate confirmation message to all concerned. “The First Notice of Loss is critical,” Ward says. “ProgiSync means less time on the phone, and communication with the insured and the shop is improved. Overall customer service is enhanced considerably.” When the estimate becomes a work order, ProgiLog takes over, updating the customer and the insurer throughout the entire repair process. More than simply sending out notifications, ProgiLog allows customers and claims reps to log in to the file at any time to view the status of the repair – at a level of information controlled by the bodyshop. Electronic messaging is one aspect of ProgiSync that Ward would like to see utilized more by shops. “More and more people are looking for text messaging. We have a solution in development now that addresses this concern. A customer will be able to report their claim and schedule their own inspection appointment using the app, without making a phone call. This kind of service wows the customers.”

Audatex Estimating powered by AudaNet Audatex Canada Toronto, Ont. www.audatex.ca

Audatex Canada’s next generation of Audatex Estimating, powered by AudaNet, is available for free to current users, and offers a variety of innovative and intuitive features, including easier access to claim information, faster and more intelligent search, a new Consolidated Vehicles section with dynamic 3-D graphic display capability, enhanced damage-capture imaging, and advanced claims-sorting and work-list management. Jamie Watters, Audatex Canada’s director of product management, calls it “a Canadian success story – built by Canadians for Canadians, with all the data driving this new platform stored in Audatex’s private cloud hosted in our new Canadian data centre. By hosting our customer data and backups locally, we are ensuring the highest levels of security and reliability for our next-generation private cloud platform. “We’ve made it quicker by reducing the amount of screens, and designed the solution to be more intuitive. Having access to the right repair information at the right time helps bodyshops estimate the entire repair package faster and deliver better service to their insurance partners and customers.” In addition, it integrates well with other systems. Audatex Canada marketing director Mark Fairhurst says, “Bodyshops today may use up to 15 or 20 systems. We want to reduce that amount, and the complex experience that comes with using multiple solutions. Being able to provide a greater degree of integration makes their job easier and makes them more effective.” Watters adds that such inter-operational software is a trend destined for major growth. But he says shops are going to have to help move it along, by insisting that their vendors build systems designed to easily exchange information with those of other vendors.

Production Management / Hub – RepairCenter Mitchell International San Diego, Calif. www.mitchell.com

Difficulties tracking the repair process increase exponentially with a bodyshop’s size. Medium and large companies will therefore appreciate Mitchell’s new Production Management feature, available as a free upgrade to its RepairCenter program. The new feature follows a car’s repair progress from start to finish, helping shops streamline and speed up their teams’ workflow. Says Jim O’Leary, Mitchell’s vice-president of product and marketing, “This feature provides a very visual way for managers and other staff members to see the flow, find bottlenecks, and get customers back on the road as soon as possible.” Production Management offers improved visualization tools that let any shop employee view reports and analyze repair process data. A mobile version of the new tool will soon be available through the RepairCenter Mobile app for iPad. Another new build-in to the Mitchell RepairCenter is Hub, a centralized view that handles all internal shop communications – with staff, colleagues, and other shops on the Mitchell network – easily keeping everyone in the loop. Hub allows users to document all communications, from phone calls to emails and faxes, storing them securely for future reference. The user can control the conversation, making it as inclusive or private as desired, and can set up instant group messaging via the Network function. There is also a handy Subscription function that lets you follow a repair order and proactively manage the amount of repair-critical and info upgrades you want to track, plus an Alerts and Notifications tool that flags new assignments, tasks, and other vital bits of information.

Sometimes a relatively simple idea, wedded to new technology, can prove invaluable to a business. “Recently, I walked into a shop,” says Frank Terlep, “lead sherpa”of Summit eMarketing Sherpas, “and I saw all this dusty stuff on the wall – certifications, plaques, and so on. I started thinking, ‘Consumers aren’t going to study it all, see it all, take it all in. So what if the shop could make this neat and easy?’ “ShopRep.tv takes that shop wall and digitizes it. All this material is aired on a flat-screen TV, and much more. You can include and integrate online reviews, special promo offers, your own videos, or repair videos from suppliers – anything you want. And you can place it literally anywhere you want it shared: in your lobby, on your estimator’s desk, on a website, whatever. All you need is an HD flat-screen TV and an Internet connection. That’s it. We set it all up, integrate all the materials, and take care of changes, updates, and improvements.” The system is currently in the process of rolling out on a beta test to 50 shops across North America, including about a dozen Canadian venues, with availability to the rest of the industry slated within a few months’ time. This is all part of a trend Terlep sees towards digital signage in both bricks and clicks environments. Clean, affordable, and a good way to showcase a business, he says it provides a better retail experience for the consumer as well as better marketing for the shop.

SEMA 2014:

Bigger, Bolder, Cooler – and Kustom The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) expo, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from November 4 to November 7, 2014 just gets bigger, bolder, and a little more outrageous with each passing year. This year’s event drew over 60,000 international and domestic attendees from all sectors of the automotive and collision repair industry. And of course there were many kool kustoms on show. Here are just a few of the highlights for collision repair professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Kyle Tucker was crowned the winner of the first-ever SEMA Battle of the Builders competition featuring more than 125 vehicle customizers from throughout the country. The competition represented an elite group of individuals who have demonstrated extreme talent, creativity, and craftsmanship in modifying cars, trucks, and SUVs. The competition was the foundation for a nationwide television special filmed at the inaugural SEMA Ignited, where hundreds of vehicles exited the Las Vegas Convention Center after the SEMA Show and made their way to the LINQ near the strip in Las Vegas. SEMA Ignited gave attendees and the public a chance to preview many of the industry’s latest in automotive accessories on many of the show vehicles on display during SEMA. At the Axalta spray booth, attendees watched celebrities spray, or actually suited up themselves to spray, Cromax Pro waterborne basecoat and Cromax Premier LE UVA primer-surfacer in an IntelliMist climate-controlled spray booth. SEMA attendees also entered a draw to win a private meet and greet with Axalta-sponsored NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Jeff Gordon. Several show cars coated with BASF’s Glasurit and RM paints walked off with awards at the show, including the Chevrolet Design Award for the Best Chevy in Show for the 1966 “Recoil” Chevelle from the Ringbrothers, painted in a custom Sand Storm colour from the Glasurit 90-Line; Ford Motor Co. Best in Stand Design for the 2015 Ford Mustang convertible styled by designer Chip Foose, Glasurit ambassador, featuring light green metallic paint with orange accents from BASF’s Glasurit 90-Line; Autobytel’s Best Paint Jobs at SEMA, for the Chip Foose 2006 Ford Mustang GT in the Magnaflow booth featuring Tungsten Grey paint from the Glasurit 90-Line; and the 1972 Buick Riveria “Rivtile” from Juergen Book that was painted snake-style to represent an ”automotive reptile.” Matrix Automotive Finishes debuted its newest products and featured several celebrity appearances, including autograph sessions with Danny the “Count” Koker, Kevin Mack, 14 Bodyshop l January 2015 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

and Ryan Evans, stars of the History Channel’s hit TV show, Counting Cars; and Nub, from Nub Grafix, showing off his pinstriping skills with the new FX Series Striping and Lettering line. Live demos and competitions with the Striping and Lettering line were featured daily inside the Matrix booth, led by well-known custom artist and striper Ron “Flea” Fleenor. Pro-Spray Automotive Finishes teamed up with The Custom Shop to display designer and builder John Wargo’s ’62 Corvette Roadster, known as the “Copper Topless.” The Roadster was a barn find located on the second story of a barn scattered in pieces. Over three years, the vehicle was finally completed and given a number of cool modifications: Chevy Big Block 598 cubic inch motor with Vortech supercharger, dual side scoops, motorized hood and trunk lid, two-tone custom interior, Cray wheels, rear view cameras, and of course an amazing paint job. Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes announced its partnership with Richard Childress Racing and displayed the first of 25 Off-Road Signature Series custom pickTop: SEMA Ignited, a proup trucks. ccif conference

CCIF: Montreal A Glimpse into the Future Vehicle technology, telematics and training took centre stage at CCIF Montreal. Speakers shared their expertise with 214 attendees, and offered a glimpse into how technology might impact the future of the industry. It was a meeting packed with valuable information, great networking, and the opportunity to speak directly with industry experts. 2015 Ford F‐150 Collision Repair Program CCIF attendees were provided with a comprehensive overview of the F-150 Collision Repair Program, including specific repair procedures, training and equipment requirements, and insight into the design of the vehicle. Larry Coan, damageability product concern engineer, customer service engineering for Ford Motor Company, spoke about the changes in design to the new F-150. The most significant change was the conversion from steel to high-strength military-grade aluminum, which decreases the overall vehicle weight by 700 lbs. and improves fuel economy and handling. Larry outlined the tools, equipment, and repair procedures required in addition to showing photos to illustrate sectioning, riveting, and welding requirements. It was clear that Ford has invested a great deal of thought in the planning process, to take repair costs into consideration when designing the F-150. He also gave the audience an opportunity to ask questions. It was a phenomenal opportunity to get questions answered directly by the expert about aluminum equipment, infrastructure requirements, parts purchasing, tools selection, and training requirements.

Haiti ARISE Technical School Leanne Jefferies, director of collision programs for AIA Canada, was joined by Tom Bissonnette, owner of Parr Autobody, to provide an update on the CCIF charitable project. The industry has started to make donations to contribute towards the intro16 Bodyshop l January 2015 l www.bodyshopbiz.com

duction of collision repair training at the Haiti ARISE technical school. To date, I‐ CAR Canada has donated its entire course library, Sherwin‐Williams has donated $35,0000 in paint products, and Tom Bissonnette has pledged $10,000 in financial contributions. The committee is asking industry to consider contributing supplies, tools, and equipment to be shipped overseas in a container that is currently located in Burnaby, B.C., or provide a financial donation to be help construct the dedicated classroom and workshop. More information is available on the CCIF website.

CCIF Skills Program Leanne Jefferies, director of the CCIF Skills Program, shared 2014 results including the program’s latest video from the 2014 Skills Canada National Competition. She highlighted that the CCIF Skills Program helped to introduce Car Painting in B.C., found an industry‐provided location for the New Brunswick competition, and introduced a “student training day” at the Ontario event. She thanked industry, noting that the 11 competitive events in 10 provinces wouldn’t be possible without the financial support of sponsors and industry volunteers to help run the events. Looking ahead to 2015, the program will continue to raise the bar. Leanne expects to introduce onsite car painting in B.C. and Alberta, bringing the total number of 100% onsite events to four. The implications for this are significant: increasing industry’s ability to market career opportunities in‐person to tens of thousands of additional students. To become a 2015

CCIF Skills Program sponsor, contact Leanne at ljefferies@bell.net.

I‐CAR Canada I‐CAR Canada has seen significant growth in the uptake of training by industry. The number of gold‐class collision repair facilities has nearly doubled since 2010. Andrew Shepherd, executive director of I‐CAR Canada, shared program developments for the past year, including a look at the latest training courses being offered. Some of the exciting new courses available are NEW15 – Vehicle Technology and Trends, FOR06 – Ford F150 Structural Repair Training Course, DOC01 – Documentation and Digital Photography, DAM15 – Advanced Steering and Suspension Systems Damage Analysis, and APR01 – Aluminum Exterior Panel Repair and Replacement. I‐CAR remains the primary delivery agent for much needed, up‐to‐date technical training in Canada. Andrew also provided an exciting update on the I‐CAR Repairability Portal, which will provide industry with a wealth of information about repairs, including common questions and answers, online. ccif conference cars. The tools and training required to repair vehicles properly are changing as fast as vehicle design. BMW recently introduced the i3, the first mass-produced carbon fibrereinforced plastic (CFRP) vehicle. Chris shared information about the repair of the vehicles, explaining that BMW has already certified five collision repair centres in Canada to complete these repairs. It’s a clear sign that there is more collaboration between OEs and repairers today than ever before. Chris also shared some very important information about repairing CFRP vehicles. There are special tools and techniques required – specifically, a scratch tool to assess damage, and tools for carbon milling. Training required to certify technicians includes a total of 152 hours of hands‐on training. He stressed that the small details are of major importance, and that completing an improper repair can actually result in a vehicle becoming a write-off. Chris explained that BMW will continue to utilize CFRP as a key material in the construction of its vehicles in the future.

Telematics & Predictive Analytics: The Future Is Here Paul‐Andre Savoie, president and CEO of Baseline Telematics, shared how usage‐ based insurance (UBI) has taken hold around the globe, with over 80 insurers worldwide who have entered UBI in the past 36 months. This is a fast‐growing trend that has major implications for both insurance and collision industries. To date, Baseline has gathered over one billion km of auto driving data. By 2020, UBI is expected to account for 17.4% of North American insurance policies. In Canada, Desjardins and Industrial Alliance are currently operating in this space. Paul‐Andre noted that UBI devices are changing rapidly as well – ten years ago, they were very expensive, hard‐ wired black boxes. Today, the devices are

inexpensive, and can even work with a mobile app. For example, in the mechanical side of automotive repair, the “My NAPA” app is being launched, and it essentially gives consumers a dashboard on their smart phone that monitors speed, RPM, tire pressure, braking habits, and error codes. For the collision industry, Paul‐Andre noted that there can be several benefits with telematics. First, young drivers can afford newer cars due to lower insurance premiums. Second, some insurers have simplified the claim process by eliminating the estimate – these insurers have noted that the cost savings of removing most of the administration outweighs the cost of managing or controlling the front‐end process. And finally, telematics will bring the ability for predictive analytics to make accurate diagnoses of damage in just seconds.

The Power of Predictive Analytics & Actionable Data Anthony Giagnacovo, managing director of Audatex Canada, shared a presentation on the “Power of Predictive Analytics.” He explained that by 2015, the auto industry will be the second-largest data producer of any industry. What does this mean? With the massive amount of information available, our industry needs ways to manage the data and make it actionable. By leveraging historical data and predictive analytics, accuracy of damage analysis is improved, and better decisions can be made during the repair process. This removes the “gut feeling” from the process, and replaces it with fact. Anthony explained that vehicles will continue to evolve, becoming more personalized to consumer preferences from the factory. More advanced materials, electronics, connectivity, and a multitude of safety features (self‐braking, crash avoidance, self parking) continue to be included in new models. The result? Repairing a vehicle correctly contin-

ues to become more complicated. Having the right information in a usable format makes it possible for repairers to repair vehicles properly. It makes it possible for insurers not only to understand the repairs required, but also evaluate risk better when writing insurance premiums for a vehicle. These technologies and software exist today. The future of our industry will definitely be impacted, as telematics and predictive analytics are being implemented by companies across the globe at an increasing rate.

CCIF Roadmap: 2014 Results: Where Are We Headed? Larry Jefferies, CCIF chairman, provided an update on the status of the CCIF initiatives that have been undertaken in 2014. In less than a year, CCIF has been re‐energized, and has sharpened its focus on pressing business issues, all with the management support of AIA Canada. Larry explained that the role of CCIF is to share information on things that matter, create the opportunities for national support on specific industry projects and initiatives, and deliver results on projects that will have a positive impact in the industry. The results produced this year include: introduction of a director, collision programs, with a full time commitment to delivering great results; a newly‐ structured CCIF Steering Committee that includes engagement from repairers, OEs, suppliers, and insurers; establishment of the AIA Collision Council; and an agenda targeting profitability, vehicle repair complexity, and people. In addition, the VOICE (standing for Vote On Industry Change and Evolution) voting mechanism is ensuring that CCIF meetings are fully interactive. Looking ahead to 2015, Larry expects that the Business Conditions Survey participation will continue to grow, and as more metrics are added to the reports, industry will have an increasingly valuable tool for analysis and measurement of the business. Another exciting project, the Insurance Harmonization project, will move forward and engage insurers and repairers to gain broad support for creating a standard approach for the pre‐repair component or estimate submission. The goal is to reduce costs for both repairers and insurers, decrease cycle time, and improve NPS/customer satisfaction scores. CCIF and the AIA Collision Council will work together to create solutions that improve the profitability of the industry for all stakeholders.

i-car report

I-CAR Repairability Portal Goes Live I-CAR’s new tech-support website makes obtaining the precise answers you need quick and authoritative, in one location. By Martha Uniacke Breen

I

- CAR’s comprehensive clearinghouse of the latest and most thorough technical support information for collision repair went live at the end of September. The I-CAR Repairability Technical Support Portal provides the collision repair industry with an easy-to-access source for virtually every kind of collision repair issue, and can be found at rts.i-car.com. According to Andrew Shepherd, senior director, industry programs, with the Automotive Industries Association of Canada, the need for a user-friendly, authoritative and comprehensive portal like this has become imperative today, and the obvious choice to host such a site is I-CAR. A single source that can provide a liaison between the OEM and the tech to disseminate needed information quickly and reliably, updated in real time, was conceived to meet a real and ever more pressing need in modern collision repair. “There’s been a massive rise in the amount and complexity of information from the OEMs, and they are intentionally channelling it through I-CAR,” he explains. Updated daily, the portal features a number of point-and-click tabs that focus on several key areas. The most comprehensive section, Technical Knowledge, provides a complete encyclopedia of repair issues and information in one place, organized by manufacturer logo for easy and intuitive access. Here you will find OEM information, provided directly by every major manufacturer, on a huge variety of issues. Resources include tech articles and bulletins, position statements, and detailed repair information. Video howtos, also produced by the manufacturers, are included where available to help effect foolproof and accurate repairs. Other links in the Technical Knowledge section include OEM Partial Part Replacement Search; Uniform Procedures for Collision Repair (UPCR); the latest collision repair news; OEM Restraint System Part Replacement Search; and Ask I-CAR. The Educational Programs link leads visitors to a complete catalogue of I-CAR (U.S.) training and education resources, and also conveniently features tuition and registration information and application forms. Registration for individuals or groups, such as members of one facility, can be easily implemented through this area. The third tab, labelled Solutions, details other ways I-CAR can help industry professionals, through technical support and liaison with OEMs, repairability consulting, custom training programs, and more. Along with the Technical Knowledge section, the heart of the site is Ask I-CAR, a convenient way to get questions answered by I-CAR professionals using OEM resources. One interesting feature of this section is its regularly updated Top Ten FAQs, divided into two lists: Top Ten Vehicle Specific Questions and Top Ten I-CAR Specific Questions. You may find your question answered here, or

learn more about common issues you may have wondered about – or never knew existed. Many of the answers to questions include links where you can find further information if required. Ask I-CAR can be accessed at several points on the site, including a banner on the home page, to make it easy to pose questions quickly and receive fast and authoritative responses. The portal also has a number of frequently updated features that make it worthwhile to check back regularly. Daily posts highlight subjects such as the latest releases from the OEMs, daily collision repair news items, and the most recent questions posed by other visitors to the site as well as to I-CAR professionals. A survey of recent posts included questions about the new Ford F-150, reports from OEMs on specific repair issues, and more. “Even ten years ago, industry could do well with a certain amount of training, and looking up issues when they were needed; automotive design and repair information was fairly static,” says Shepherd. “But there’s just been an explosion in the number of types, standards, procedures, kinds of designs and kinds of repairs on modern vehicles – from tens or maybe hundreds of items, to thousands now. Much of the tech’s job is really about researching procedures, even before picking up a tool.” And now, with the I-CAR Repairability Portal, finding needed answers, when you need them, is convenient, reliable, efficient – and easy. www.bodyshopbiz.com l January 2015 l Bodyshop 19
