NAT WINS TOP ACCOLADE Former Boclair Academy pupil, Natalie Berry, has been named as this year’s Scottish Youth Ambassador for Mountain Culture. The 24-year-old, who grew up in Bearsden and now lives in Edinburgh, is only the second young person to win the award, which is presented jointly by Fort William Mountain Festival and Nevis Landscape Partnership. After hearing the news, Nat said: “I'm delighted to receive this award for mountain culture. I am fortunate to be able to work and volunteer within climbing, an activity from which I have personally gained so much over the years.” Nat started climbing at the age of eight and was asked to join the British Junior Climbing Team when she was 11. Over subsequent years, she has had considerable competition success, winning eight British climbing championship titles and many European youth podium places, including a first place at the European Youth Series in Slovenia in 2007. Since then she has

A newly laid and way-marked walking path, close to Milngavie, is due to be ofďŹ cially opened on the Easter bank holiday weekend. The five-mile route starts at Edenmill Farm, near Carbeth, and circuits Burncrooks Reservoir in the expansive Kilpatrick Hills.

The trail is also part of a new extension to the long-distance walking and cycling trail, the John Muir Way, which crosses Scotland from east coast to west

coast. New signs point the way from Carbeth via Burncrooks and across the hills to Balloch as the 134-mile John Muir Way journeys from Dunbar, in East Lothian, to Helensburgh, Argyll. The aim of the ÂŁ500,000 Burncrooks project is to create a more scenic upland link for John

We reported in the Community Magazine last summer about path materials being helicoptered into the project site in the Kilpatricks. Now the path has been bedded in and already looks and feels natural. The path will provide various opportunities for different types of visitor experiences, including the circular route from Edenmill Farm Shop; a longer option from Carbeth to Balloch using the train to return to your car; and an upland experience as part of the longer John Muir Way. Additionally, it’s hoped there will be economic benefits for local businesses with visitors looking for food and drink, while through-walkers will be looking for overnight accommodation. Residents are being encouraged to take part in Local History Week 2016, which this year celebrates engineering and technology. The annual event, organised by East Dunbartonshire Libraries, runs from March 5 to 12 and aims to increase awareness of different aspects of local history. Brookwood Library in Bearsden will be displaying photographs and articles showcasing the Bennie Railplane, which was the brainchild of George Bennie (1891 to 1957). A prototype of the monorail system was installed at the Burnbrae Dye Works over the LNER railway siding in 1930. Also at Brookwood, local historian Bill Black will explore

the use of the River Kelvin and its tributaries as a renewable energy source for past industry in Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire and Stirlingshire in an illustrated talk on Wednesday March 9 at 7.30pm. Milngavie Heritage Centre will be home to an exhibition describing the history of education in the community. The exhibition, on March 5, 7, 8 and 10, 11 and 12 between 10am and 3.30pm, is in conjunction with Douglas Academy, where pupils have been engaged in project work relating to the history of local schools.

FINE VOICE: Members of U3A are looking for people to join in on their choir no matter what level of singing you're at.

Organised through Bearsden and Milngavie U3A (University of the Third Age), Carry On Singing has been going from strength to strength. The group, which meets fortnightly in the hall at Westerton Parish Church, is aimed at “anyone who fancies singing with others but is too nervous to approach a more formal singing group or choir”. As with all U3A

groups it is for people who are retired from daily work. The organiser is Elaine Miller, of Milngavie. She says: “There are many people who really like to sing but they are intimidated by choirs or more formal singing groups. They are put off because they don’t think they are good enough. “We welcome anyone who wants to join us and we are a very good

The sessions on Friday mornings are sometimes accompanied by a piano or guitar. Elaine says: “I think that having an accompaniment can sometimes mean that you do not hear your own voice and we prefer that we can hear ourselves singing. We do all kinds of songs, including part songs and rounds. “Everyone can have a go and people seem to work really hard at it. They often end up with red faces because singing can be quite physical.” Elaine believes there is a huge benefit to mental good health that comes form singing, too. She says: “We have a turn out of between 15 and 25 people and the group, as a whole, has become more confident with time. Singing is wonderful for all and we are always happy to welcome new members.” Contact Elaine through B&M U3A at u3asites.org.uk

We bring you more news and information about pets and animal care from your local vets. We’re happy to hear from more vets at fiona@thecommunitymagazine.co.uk In late April, a vacancy opened up in her foster carer’s own cat family and Kizzy moved in. Julie, a vetinerary nurse at Avalon, says: “Within an hour of moving in Kizzy had disciplined the owner’s alpha male cat and told him who was boss. What a diva!” Since then, Kizzy has had digestive problems and, sadly, she was required to have her right eye removed.

pEt oF thE Month Avalon Vets in Milngavie has nominated Kizzy the cat as their pet of the month. KIzzy, who is aged between 16 and 20, was taken into the care of CatFlap, a Glasgow cat rescue charity, after her owner went into a nursing home in early 2015. KIzzy had to be partially shaved to deal with matted fur and she also had blocked tear ducts.

Julie says: “Amazingly Kizzy picked up quickly and continues to enjoy her life. We’ve chosen Kizzy as our pet of the month because she has shown great bravery and character in her later years.”

Chip sMart Vets4Pets in Bearsden tells a poignant story about two lost dogs. The first dog was brought to the practice and was scanned for a microchip but it turned out she wasn’t chipped.

We will deep clean your Aga, Range, Oven, Grill, Hob, and Extractor until they Gleam.

This meant the vets had to spread the word about the lost dog on social media and by phoning other vets. Eventually the worried owners were reunited with their pet. The second dog did have a microchip but the owner’s address and phone details had not been updated so it took a lot of detective work to also reunite owner and pet. Vets4Pets wants to warn people that as of April 2016, both owners could have faced fines. Practice manager Gemma Lamont says: “New legislation will require all dogs to be microchipped and database information to be kept up to date.”

ROWAN GALLERY GEts sEt fOR 2016 Rowan Gallery kicks off its’ run of shows for 2016 by welcoming back the ever-popular Dronma for her second solo exhibition at the gallery. Dronma, one of a group of contemporary painters described as “New Scottish Colourists” and a past president of the Glasgow Society of Women Artists, has gained a strong following from discerning buyers, both in the UK and overseas. Her expressive style depicts the wild yet beautiful landscapes of Scotland’s rugged coastline. Featuring earthy tones and moody skies her paintings have sold throughout the UK and, in her very successful solo show at Rowan Gallery in April 2014, several pieces found their way as far afield as the United States and the Middle East with many sales coming from repeat buyers. The solo exhibition opens on the weekend of Mothering Sunday

Most people can remember when the Northern Rock collapse signalled the start of the financial crisis , it was October 2007 – which seems like yesterday. Think about this...

(with refreshments served on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th March), so there’s no excuse not to find that special present for your dearest Mum. Paintings can be viewed online from Thursday 3rd March. Anyone wishing an e-invitation to the opening weekend of the exhibition can contact the gallery at enquiries@rowangallery.com. For further information on what’s happening in 2016 you can visit www.rowangallery.com and sign up to the mailing list and you can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.

Sell your home quicker The first ever 3G smart phone sold by Apple in the UK was in July 2008. Since then the iphone has already had 8 upgrades which shows how quickly technology changes. Even in Estate Agency these developments have improved our business for the better and enables our clients to reach more potential buyers and spend less on marketing which has resulted in hugely reduced costs for selling. Before these changes you really had an edge if you sold your house with a larger company as they had much greater profile and could maximise your sales price through enhanced exposure in the press. This is completely different today as houses are rarely in newspapers and are sold by advertising on the internet. The two main property

websites in the UK are Rightmove and Zoopla. Unlike many other agents, we are on both, as well as many other sites and portals. Property Bureau is a private independent company who guarantee the best service, competitive sales fee and quality advice from some of the most experienced people in the business. In our modern world, strong reading and writing skills are crucial to success in order to maximise potential. An estimated 30% of children find reading and writing difficult - despite good teaching and support - and this is often attributed to dyslexia. Dyslexia is one of many barriers to learning which hinder progress and seriously affect selfesteem. Many families struggle to find help, however a unique brain plasticity-based treatment programme is achieving success in helping people overcome dyslexia: Cellfield is a multisensory programme which targets the areas in the brain used by good readers to bring about permanent and sustainable improvements in reading ability. Average gains in reading age of about 2 years can be achieved, although gains in reading age are only part of the story because, in many cases Cellfield proves to be lifechanging

HISTORIC FLOOD What's Up Doc? TREE REMEMBERED with Dr Nick Dunn A tree planted 20 years ago in Balmore village to commemorate devastating local floods will be the subject of a local history group meeting this month Speakers at Baldernock Local History Group will include one of the organisers Professor Niall Logan and his wife Jane, who experienced the Kelvin Valley floods of December 1994. Several residents were forced to abandon their homes and restoration took more than six months. Fifteen months after the floods, in March 1996, an ash tree was planted beside the A807 at Acredyke. The planting was carried out by the late journalist and Balmore resident Magnus Magnusson. An ash tree was chosen to mark the event because Balmore was famous for its “Muckle Ash Tree” in the early 19th century.

This month: ASTHMA ATTACKS

Recently, the 20th anniversary of the tree planting has been marked by a new memorial stone and wildflower beds, courtesy of East Dunbartonshire Council. Prof Logan said: “We hope to offer an interesting evening when we reveal the story of the local impact of the historic flood and also the ash tree planting.” Spaces are limited but people are welcome to attend the meeting at 7.30pm on March 17 at Baldernock Primary School. Contact: blhg@baldernock.org.uk for more details.

“Asthma attack” now describes a “flare-up” or “exacerbation” of asthma. This is designed to promote early action. I initially worried about using this term, in case it would alarm patients. Most people traditionally imagine an “asthma attack” to be very severe, requiring hospital. However I now see the sense in using the term more widely, as it may encourage people to seek help earlier and prevent them requiring emergency hospital care. Using the new definition, many asthma attacks will be managed by GPs or nurses, who can prescribe steroid tablets and review asthma treatment. There are 390,000 people in Scotland affected by asthma.

It affects the “tubes” in the lungs, causing temporary narrowing leading to cough, wheeze or breathlessness. Good control of asthma reduces long-term damage and risk of attacks, mainly through daily use of preventer (usually brown) inhalers, keeping people well. Seeking help early is key. This may be as simple as contacting the surgery for a same day appointment. The earlier an asthma attack is recognised, the simpler the solution. Ideally you should not need to use your blue reliever more than twice a week, so if you are, find out from your Practice Nurse or GP how to get better control! Check out asthma.org.uk for more info.

Local people are being encouraged to put on their wackiest heels this month and join a special walk in aid of a Scottish cancer charity. The second Heel Appeal 2016 takes place on March 20, from 10am to 1pm, and will raise funds for the Cancer Support Scotland Centre, at Gartnavel Campus, Glasgow. The centre provides emotional and practical support on a one-to-one basis and through community-based groups to anyone affected by cancer, including family, friends and

carers, in the west of Scotland. The charity was founded by Sir Kenneth Calman in 1980. Last year, the Heel Appeal attracted more than 70 walkers, wearing a wide variety of heels. They raised over £6,000. This year, organisers hope that even more people will join the event and make it “bigger and better”. A spokesperson said: “The Heel Appeal reflects the saying ‘to

walk a mile in someone else’s shoes’. In this case, it is those who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis. “Fund-raisers can take on the walk in memory of a loved one, wear their wackiest shoes to make it a personal challenge, or just join in with the fun.” The Heel Walk 2016 follows a route in the west end of Glasgow. There will be entertainment with live music, face painting, a raffle, cheerleaders, a photo booth and prizes given for teams and individual walkers. Registration for the Heel Appeal is £5 and all participants must raise a minimum of £30 per person. The event is also looking for a supporter to be the Heel Appeal Champion and to start the walk. Perhaps there is someone you would like to nominate for this? Schools and work places can join in the fund-raising month by hosting a Heel Appeal Day throughout March. Pupils or colleagues who donate money can wear wacky shoes for the day. See www.cancersupportscotland. org/events/the-heel-appeal

FAMOUSLY CONNECTED: MARCO CONSANI Image © Thomas Loehndorf

Acclaimed ultra runner Marco Consani was brought up in Bearsden, but back then it was his brother who broke records in school races. While Paul triumphed in hurdling events at Boclair Academy, Marco, 41, took part in a few cross country running events but he confesses he found them tough. He recalls: “I was in a nationals race for the school and I thought I’d finished all my laps. When I realised I had one more lap still to do I thought I would never make it. It was so hard.” These days, however, Marco is the family’s record breaker and an internationally renowned endurance runner. In his most recent triumph he won the Barcelona 24-Hour race in which he ran non-stop around a track for 24 hours. Marco broke the course record by running 159 miles (256km) and beat his personal best distance of 154 miles (248km).

Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 it is already a legal requirement for dogs defined as dangerous to be microchipped. However, new legislation being introduced requires that all dogs in Scotland, England and Wales will have to be microchipped as of 6th April 2016. Your dog’s details will be registered on a database and it will be the owner’s responsibility to ensure that the details are up to date and accurate. This includes advising if your pet has passed away or been sold to a new keeper. Going forward, all new puppies will be chipped at

the time of their second vaccinations. The idea behind this is to encourage responsible ownership, deter theft and improve control over breading. Local authorities will have handheld scanners which can read the microchips instantly. This will mean all dogs should be traceable and able to be reunited with owners quickly. In the event you do not microchip your dog, then a notice may be served on you requiring you to do so within 21 days. If you choose to ignore the notice then you will be fined up to ÂŁ500 or an enforcer may seize the dog and microchip it at your expense.

B

earsden Golf Club was founded on 3 March 1891 and this year celebrates its 125th year, making it one of the oldest clubs in the area. The course at this time had 9 holes and during the first 3 seasons the Clubhouse was a simple wooden hut, basically a changing room with no toilets. To accommodate the growing number of members, a new pavilion-type clubhouse was built in time for the start of the 1894 season. During the Great War 1914-18, the course was taken over for grazing dairy cows and potato plots to help the war effort. The local Home Guard was based on the course during the Second World War and during the blitz of Clydebank in March 1941, the Unit mounted a Lewis gun on the first tee to fire at enemy planes. Again parts of the course were taken over for food production, this time turnips for the sheep coming off the hills in winter. A new clubhouse was built in 1965 and it was only in 1966 that a full liquor licence was obtained. Various changes to the 9-hole course were made through the years and in the late 1970’s the Committee approved the new layout with additional alternate holes that is still the layout today. In 2007, the new modern clubhouse was built and is the hub of all club activities. In this, the 125th year, it is a time for looking back in appreciation and forward in anticipation. Bearsden’s members continue to value the Club’s special characteristics and traditions and promote

the family spirit within the Club that helps create the friendly ambience evident in the Club. The Club has a history of producing top class golfers at Boys, Amateur and Professional levels, the most recent being Ewen Ferguson. In the past few years Ewen has held the titles of British Boys Champion, Scottish Boys Champion and Scottish Boys Stroke-Play Champion simultaneously and was Captain of the successful GB&I Boys team. Since moving into the senior ranks in 2015 he is the Scottish Champion of Champions, Craigmillar Park Open winner, member of the winning Scottish team in the European Team Championships and played with distinction in the winning GB&I Walker Cup team against the U.S. at Royal Lytham. Bearsden Golf Club prides itself on investing in golf and improving the value for all its members. The Club is currently renovating its practise facilities and installing high quality practise netting. The addition of a new Pro Shop has been much welcomed by the members and this gives them access to all their golfing needs from balls to gloves to clothing. The Committee continue to look at ways they can develop and improve what’s on offer at the Club and it’s 125th Year promises to hold many great initiatives and additions to the services for it’s members. The Club has a professional management structure with their recently appointed

General Manager, David Muir. David is helping to shape the club’s future and brings experience from his background as a Club Professional for over 10 years. The course layout, which comprises of 9 holes and has additional alternate holes, is perfect for those that are looking for a challenge but may not have the time available to play 18 holes every time they are at the Club. The flexibility that the course offers is a perfect fit for all golfers whether they are looking for a great golfing challenge or just an enjoyable stroll with friends. Having such success with Juniors in the past, Bearsden continue to support and develop their Juniors and offer free coaching throughout the year and this year will see the Club host it’s own summer camp. This will be a week long, fun initiative for Juniors new to the game, that want to meet friends and get involved in the great game of golf. The Clubhouse is an integral part of any golf club and at Bearsden it is the beating heart of the Club. It has an unrivalled social scene with numerous social events happening throughout the year. The Club has both Sky Sports and BT Sports being broadcast so you are never short of something great to watch. The comfortable and modern layout of the Club is perfect for those looking to celebrate milestone birthdays, anniversaries and is also a serene place to hold a funeral. Our head chef, Madeleine Valente, comes

from a strong background in the catering industry and worked at the illustrious ‘The Ubiquitous Chip’ restaurant. Madeleine caters for all parties and events and her food is a real special treat to experience. For this coming season Bearsden Golf Club have a great Easter offer in March if you are looking to start golf, get back to golf or if you are just a little disillusioned with your own Club and want to move to a Club that is fresh, exciting and moving forward. Two local veterinary nurses spotted a gap in the market – and have launched a training and activity school for dogs and their owners. Tracy Jones and Lynn Byford first realised the demand for dog training sessions when they organised puppy training classes from their former workplace at Glenbrae Vets in Bearsden.

called TREIBBALL. Tracy says: “TREIBBALL is especially good for dogs that like to herd. It requires dogs to learn the skills to push large balls into goals. It’s great fun for all kinds of dogs.”

Tracy says: “The sessions at Glenbrae were always full and then owners started asking us for follow-on classes. We launched these in the hall at All Saints Church in Bearsden and these became really popular, too. That’s when we decided that there could be a business in our classes and so we left our jobs to launch Best Paw Forward Training.”

There are five training classes for dogs of all ages and breeds at All Saints Church on a Tuesday evening between 6.30pm and 9pm. Tracy says: “We keep classes quite small, between six and eight dogs, and we aim to make the training fun and rewards based. The training is great for improving the bond between dog and owner and for obedience.”

As well as basic training for dogs, Tracy and Lynn have started activity sessions for dogs, such as agility, flyball and a new class

More recently, Best Paw Forward Training has opened a dedicated training and activity unit in Bishopbriggs. Tracy says: “The

demand for our classes keeps on growing and we wanted to find somewhere that could offer a permanent base for our classes. The unit has a non-slip and cushioned floor so we can host all our agility classes there. But we don't plan to stop the classes in Bearsden as they are always booked up. “We both feel really lucky to have been able to start a business that we love. It’s such an enjoyable thing to do every day.” See www.bestpawforwardtraining. weebly.com

WEST IS 150 YEARS STRONG Local rugby club, the West of Scotland, is reportedly delighted with its growth and success during the celebratory 150th season.

KILMARDINNY CLOSED FOR REVAMP Work is underway on a £2.5million development of Kilmardinny House Arts Centre in Bearsden.

A healthy membership across the club, from Primary One aged children to veterans, as well as a “great year of play at all levels” sees the historic club in a buoyant place in 2016. Allan Snedden is the president of the West of Scotland Football Club, to give the West its official name. He said: “We feel like we are in a great place just now and have a lot to offer members and newcomers. We have some 250 junior members and watching those youngsters out on the field on a Sunday morning is a fantastic sight. “We have also restarted our women’s rugby squads with quite a bit of promise, especially in the under-16s and under-18s age groups. “And our senior men are doing

really well in their leagues. We’re hopeful that the 1st VXs will be promoted to SRU National League Division 2. The club also has a men’s veterans' squad, the Burnbrae Bulls, that are occasionally known to play ‘friendlies.”

to the hard work of various members but it was a relief when they found a permanent home again. Our latest news, of note, has been the new synthetic all-weather pitch that has been made possible after the Waitrose land sale.”

It was in 1865 that the West of Scotland Football Club was founded as an open club at Hamilton Crescent, Partick. After World War II the club found itself homeless and it wasn’t until 1953 that the Burnbrae site was purchased. Allan said: “The club still continued to play thanks

The club promotes its community focus, and most members are from the immediate area or nearby. Allan said: “We’re proud that so many members join as youngsters and stay with us through to senior and even vets levels.” See www.westofscotlandfc.co.uk

The Grade A listed house is being refurbished inside and out, with the addition of a garden pavilion extension. The aim is to create a more modern and flexible space for arts, performance and community groups, as well as for exhibitions, conferences and weddings. Kilmardinny will remain closed until the renovation project has been completed. East Dunbartonshire’s arts programme is being delivered in a range of other venues. A date has not yet been given for the re-opening of the popular public amenity.

This month: MONEY SAVING TIPS In this instalment, I will be sharing some moneymanagement tips for seniors to consider. Expert Financial Help. A wisely chosen financial advisor could help answer questions such as how quickly to take money from savings and how to invest in your later years. Develop a spending plan. Consider new ways to cut costs and consider continuing to put some of your income into savings. This will help with budgeting for things like holiday gifts and mini breaks, and can help you avoid a large, sudden withdrawal from your investments. Set up direct debits to pay your bills. This is often a cheaper way to pay bills and it also means you know all your

essentials are covered. Use credit cards cautiously. Accumulating debt can be costly and even small purchases can add up to big credit card bills. Before making purchases using a credit card, ask yourself if you can pay the balance in full when the statement arrives to avoid costly interest charges. Make it easier to manage your money and pay the bills. If you’ve accumulated multiple bank accounts and credit cards over the years, close some you no longer need. Also, for payments you are due to receive, including money from pensions or tax refunds, there are benefits to having them automatically deposited into a low-cost or no-cost checking or savings account using direct deposit.

t HELP THE REFUGEE CHILDREN FROM SYRIA

MINI RUCKSACK PROJECT Help the refugee children from Syria

Inspired by the official Rucksack Project, Art at The Grange is introducing 'The Mini Rucksack Project' in aid of the refugee children from Syria. All we are asking is for you to RECYCLE an old school bag, or equivalent, containing clothes, shoes, a toilet bag with toothpaste, toothbrush, soap and flannel etc., marked for a boy or a girl and the age of the child. This should not incur great expense, as everything, apart from the toiletries can be recycled family items. Art at The Grange will add some drawing materials.

‘The Greatest Sin is Indifference’

Hand in your MINI RUCKSACKS to ART AT THE GRANGE Saturday 2nd until Friday 8th April and leave the rest to us.

by Iain McAulay, Artist & Tutor at Art at The Grange Each of the 400 figures above represents 10,000 people. At the time of creation, there were over 4 million displaced people from Syria. This number has since greatly increased.
