Exciting 75th year concert Milngavie Music Club is celebrating its 75th anniversary year with a “very special and ambitious event” this month.

players come from the orchestra of Scottish Opera. Kemp will conduct his Milngavie Tales against the backdrop of a commissioned film. Hugh added: “Last summer the Waitrose store in Milngavie nominated the project for national funding from the John Lewis Partnership’s ‘Music Matters’ fund and against stiff competition from other community music projects all over Britain, Milngavie Music Club’s application was awarded a grant of £1000.

The final concert of the 2016-17 season on April 21 will take the form of a collaboration between the club and Music Co-OPERAtive Scotland (MacOpera), with East Dunbartonshire Children’s Chorus and East Dunbartonshire Youth Choir. The starting point for the project is the classic spoken drama-withmusic, The Soldier’s Tale, by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, which was first performed in 1918. The Soldier’s Tale is a Faustian parable about an itinerant fiddle-playing soldier who meets the devil and trades his violin for untold wealth.

called Milngavie Tales, created for the event by local composer Peter Kemp.

Stravinsky’s drama forms the second half of the programme. In the first half, the two children’s choirs will be accompanied by the professional musicians of McOpera in a new series of songs

Hugh Macdonald, from the music club, said: “The tales told by the songs are about episodes from Milngavie’s history, from the Antonine Wall to the 1930s with the Bennie Railplane and the 1950s with the Craigend Zoo.

So, there’s a strong educational element for the young people, not only in learning and performing the music, but also in learning about the history of their own community.” Renowned conductor Sian Edwards will conduct the Stravinsky work with professional actors and McOpera, whose

“This was one of only 36 projects in the country to be successful. The project is also being supported by East Dunbartonshire Arts Council, and Enterprise Music Scotland.” The Soldier’s Tale and Milngavie Tales is being performed at Cairns Church on Friday April 21 at 8pm. Tickets are on sale at The Iron Chef in Milngavie and at the door on the night, but early booking is advised as demand is likely to be high. Call: 0141 942 3102 or see www.milngaviemusic.org

Bearsden Academy will benefit from new opportunities after being named an ambassador for the national qualifications framework. The top ranking secondary school was recently welcomed on to the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) School Ambassador Programme. At an inauguration event at the school SCQF Consultant Brian Keegan presented headteacher George Cooper with the school ambassador plaque. The SCQF is Scotland’s national qualifications framework, which supports lifelong learning of

Vice-convener of the Council’s Education Committee, Councillor Manjinder Shergill, said: “Once pupils begin to explore the opportunities the SCQF offers they will start sharing their experiences with friends and family until more and more people within the community gain a better understanding of the fl exible learning pathways available to them.”

people of all ages. It also assists employers, learners and the public to understand the full range of Scottish qualifications, how they relate to each other and how different types of qualification can contribute to improving the skills of the workforce.

Mr Cooper added: "The school’s status as an SCQF Ambassador School is something we are taking very seriously. Our next step is to promote wider pupil and parental engagement with the framework. The aim is to provide yet more opportunities for our young people in order that they may succeed both now and in the future.”

One of the ways in which this work is carried out in the community is through the SCQF School Ambassador Programme.

Last year, we reported on Bearsden Academy’s award by the Sunday Times as Scotland’s highest ranking state school.

Bryan Marshall, centre, with accompanist Gillian Daly and members of the Westerton Male Voice Choir

New Kilpatrick Church, Bearsden

Some 50 members of the Westerton Male Voice Choir will come together for an exciting concert to celebrate their 60th anniversary. The special birthday event, entitled Brothers Sing On!, will take place on April 22 at New Kilpatrick Church, Bearsden, and will be led by their charismatic conductor of 18 years, Bryan Marshall. The choir dates to 1957 when a few members of Westerton Bowling Club were unable to enjoy their sport on a wet afternoon and instead they gathered around the club’s piano for a sing-song. Alistair Angus, from the choir, says: “The men discovered the enjoyment of male voice singing and the rest, as they say, is history. Now we are about to

celebrate our 60th anniversary and it feels like a very special occasion.” The concert is described as a “nostalgic trip down memory lane”. Bryan says: “We will be singing a selection of the choir’s favourite songs from over the last six decades, including traditional songs, show tunes and male voice standards.

Residents and volunteers took part in a tree planting event recently in a bid to encourage greater biodiversity in Westerton Park. The Community Tree Planting project is part of East Dunbartonshire Council’s Green Space Strategy Action for 2016/17 and has been funded by the council’s Streetscene programme. Despite wet weather, many people turned out in February to help with the planting of a number of fruit trees, including apple, plum, damson and cherry, alongside cobnut and hazel trees. Several ornamental species, including acer and ironwood, were also planted.

It is hoped the trees will encourage biodiversity and provide interest in the popular park.

Kim Kilgour, treasurer of Bearsden West Community Council, said: “It was fantastic to see many members of the Westerton community, Cairnhill Woods Group, the Community Council and Mugdock Park Volunteers come out to help on what was a rather dreich day.

In other news in Westerton, local people are being encouraged to attend Bearsden West Community Council meetings in the Community Hall on Maxwell Avenue at 7.30pm on the last Wednesday of each calendar month (except July and August).

Westerton Tennis Club aim to build two new 'red courts' incorporating a 'practice wall', supplementing their tennis offering to the local community.

A local tennis club has launched a fund-raising scheme in the hope of installing two new mini courts for players aged under 10. Westerton Tennis Club aims to build two new “red courts” to supplement the tennis offering they already provide to the local community. John Moore, from the club, says: “The courts are mainly for budding players under the age of 10 and the intention is to encourage more parents and children to come down and play and develop their game at Westerton. “It will be a great advantage to youngsters to know they have

Ormond Design, owned by Jennie Ormond, worked with Julia Grant Interiors, of Glasgow, on the fourmonth project to create a unique open plan office for travel firm Macs Adventure, which is owned by a Milngavie businessman, Neil Lapping. The offices, in Glasgow’s iconic Skypark building, are a quirky take on the traditional workplace. The brief was to reflect the company’s core values of adventure, fun and innovation while providing a vibrant space where people want to come to work. The vast one-floor office space includes meeting rooms, a large break out area, informal spaces and an oversized kitchen. Some of the eye-catching features include upholstered meeting coves, a moss

NEW Date AND SPECIAL PRIZES for BABCOCK 10k

Household Tips COOKING #1 SPAGHETTI

The date of the Babcock Helensburgh 10k has been moved from Thursday 4th May to Wednesday 3rd May, at the request of the Police and Council. This is to avoid the local Council elections on the Thursday and anticipated higher volumes of evening traffic. The race will still start at 7.30pm. Anyone unable to run on the Wednesday can apply for a refund. Organisers will be writing to entrants shortly. The prizes in each of the Babcock 10k’s in Helensburgh on Wednesday 3rd May; Dumbarton on Thursday 11th May and Glasgow Sunday 28th May will

reach record levels this year, with nearly £2,000 in cash, Start Fitness Vouchers and running accessories on offer to category and team winners. These will include: the first ten overall finishers for both men and women; the first three men’s and women’s teams of three; and the first over 40; over fifty and over sixty, male and female finishers. The Community Advertiser will be offering six special prizes of £50 in Start Fitness vouchers to the first male and female ‘local runners’ in each race. In addition each series entrant will receive a special More Mile technical t-shirt, designed for the Babcock 10k Series; every finisher will receive a unique medal at each race, together with a goody bag containing Start Fitness running accessories and Strathmore water from AG Barr.

Whilst cooking spaghetti, rice or noodles, add one teaspoon of cooking oil or one teaspoon of butter to the water in the pan. This will prevent the water from boiling over and help to stop the grains or strands from sticking together.

WATERPROOF #2 SHOES Spray wd40 on a cloth and wipe over leather shoes or leather boots, then buff with a soft clean cloth to shine and make them waterproof.

Jog Scotland Milngavie are appealing for people to support the bid to keep jogscotland going

Local people are being called on to back a growing campaign to help to reinstate financial support for jogscotland. The country-wide jogging initiative has suffered cuts as part of wider funding shortfalls at Scottish Athletics. Amazingly however, that’s exactly what the human body does in response to regular use, especially when it is pushed beyond its limits. Exercise: we all know it’s supposed to be good for us, but do we stop and wonder how it is that the body can adapt so well? In people of all ages, regular exercise trains the body to get more out of the

heart and lungs by increasing lung capacity, strengthening the heart and improving blood flow. It strengthens muscles and bones, fine-tunes our hormone levels, boosts immunity to infection and possibly some cancers, and gives us greater stamina and reduces tiredness. As the days get longer and brighter over the next few weeks, consider improving your body’s performance by giving it some exercise. It’s just a pity that cars haven’t quite got to our advanced level yet!

vote labour on 4th may We are standing as Scottish Labour candidates in Bearsden North, Bearsden South and Milngavie, confident in the knowledge that the Labour led administration in East Dunbartonshire Council, despite year on year substantial cuts to its budget, is delivering a programme that has focussed on: • Providing support and services to our elderly residents that is tailored to their own specific needs • Supporting families and the vulnerable across Bearsden and Milngavie • Providing better quality housing and accommodation • Maintaining high quality nursery, primary and secondary education that will equip our young people for the world of work • Promoting enterprise and prosperity Through our Primary School Improvement Programme and with further investment in our secondary schools we have delivered improved environments for our young people. In 2018 a new school for the children of St Andrew’s Bearsden and St Joseph’s Milngavie will be opened on the present St Andrew’s site which reflects a £10.5 million investment for our communities. We have expanded provision of “early years” nursery provision at Baljaffray & Milngavie nurseries and introduced “wrap-around” nursery provision for 50 weeks a year to support employability and our families across our different communities at: • Castlehill Nursery, Bearsden • Clober Nursery, Milngavie And finally we’ve seen 925 New affordable houses across East Dunbartonshire. That’s just some of our great achievements we have done over the past 10 years as a Labour led administration. We can achieve more. We want to see more investment in social and affordable homes in Milngavie and Bearsden which will encourage young families to come and live in our communities. We want more companies to set up businesses in our communities who will work with our schools to ensure our young people have the skills to meet the employment needs of the 21st century. We want to engage with the people in our communities to ensure they have the support to take forward community projects

Help us to achieve the best for Bearsden North, Bearsden South and Milngavie by voting for us on 4 May Promoted by Eunis Jassemi Zargani of 1 Coronation Way, Bearsden, Glasgow, G61 1DG

fun is close to home Go back to nature and show the kids how to do bark rubbings. Use white paper and a soft pencil or crayon to rub over the bark. It’s lovely to see the texture and all the pits and bumps of the bark. You can also identify the trees as you rub the bark. Go trig bagging by looking for trig points on a local map (marked with a small triangle) and then setting off to walk to the trig. There are plenty near Bearsden and Milngavie. Have a Go Longbow takes place at Mugdock Park on April 2 at 2pm. Find out how to shoot an arrow with the Green Hollow Bowmen in the Walled Garden. It only costs

£1. Also in the park on April 16 you can join the Easter Eggstravaganza from 2-4pm. Remember to bring decorated eggs for the competition and hard boiled eggs for the rolling race and egg assault course. It’s a free event.

Having a celebration? Why not hold it at goals! The hall can hold up to 120

You could also try painting your own eggs, since it’s Easter time. And how about Urban Birding? You don’t need to leave the house to spot birds, especially if you have a bird table. Start a family competition to see who can spot the most varieties over a week. There are plenty of bird guides online for identification of garden birds.

Legal Matters | April 2017

Bigger and longer Milngavie Week

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: WHAT IS STALKING? Under the terms of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010, the offence of stalking is a course of conduct which causes fear or alarm. The conduct itself is wide ranging. Section 39 of the Act provides that it can include following someone; contacting, or attempting to contact a person; publishing a statement relating to, or purportedly originating from, someone; monitoring electronic communication, including e-mails; spying; giving unwanted gifts and generally acting in a way that may cause fear and alarm. Many people wrongly assume that the alarming conduct must have taken place over

a prolonged period of time in order for it to be viewed as stalking. However, it really only has to have taken place on two occasions. The crime is taken seriously by the Scottish courts and, if convicted, could result in the accused receiving a prison sentence of up to five years, together with a significant fine. No person has to put up with this type of behaviour and as well as criminal sanctions there are also civil remedies available to anyone who requires to be protected from a stalker. Anyone who considers they are being subjected to this type of abuse should contact the police or their solicitor for further advice.

Following the revival of Milngavie Week last year, after an absence of 10 years, the organisers are planning to do it all again. Milngavie Community Development Trust will host the popular event, from Saturday June 10th to the 17th or 18th, with an even greater variety of events and activities to last year. The week will start with the Highland Games and may finish with the Classic Car Show on the 17th. However, organisers believe there may be events that “spill over into Sunday”. Wilson Blakey explains: “There are already so many events – and more being planned for this bigger and better Milngavie Week – that we are probably going to add an extra Sunday to the week.” Almost all of last year’s events will be back, including the cat and dog shows, treasure hunts,

guided walks, duck race and art and photography competitions. There are also many organisations offered to put on something new, from music concerts to sporting events such as golf and football. Ruth Blakey, another organiser, says: “We are still looking for activities to slot into the busy week so If any local organisation has an idea please get in touch.” Contact w.blakey@sky.com

Cheers to BEER FEST

Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman

We are delighted to announce that your community magazine has launched a Facebook page.

This month: Dementia Awareness Dementia is a subject very close to our hearts at Home Instead Senior Care. The majority of our lovely clients have some form of Dementia and our specially trained CareGivers bring comfort and peace of mind to the many families we provide care for. This year Dementia Awareness Week 2017 takes place from May 29th till 4th June. We fundraise regularly for dementia charities and this year we are organising two major events in partnership with our fantastic CareGivers to raise money for Alzheimer’s Scotland. The first event is our ‘Raise the Roof Party’ which is being organised by our Senior Caregiver Lisa Blackburn. The party will take place at Hayston Golf Club in Kirkintilloch on Saturday 22nd April from 7pm onwards. This will be a fun filled night with DJ, Raffles, great auction prizes and a hot buffet all included in the

ticket price of only £10. All proceeds from this event will be donated to Alzheimer’s Scotland. For tickets please contact Lisa directly on 07547 634737. We are also proud to announce the return of Memoryfest this year. Last year’s hugely successful classic rock event raised over £2,000 which was donated to Dementia UK and Alzheimers Scotland. The special event was the brainchild of Stephen and our Caregiver Cathy Dodgson, a local couple from Chryston, who both have first-hand experience with dementia after Stephen’s father was diagnosed in 2013. This year Memoryfest will take place at Club Bliss in Kirkintilloch on the evening of Sunday 30th April. The event will again be themed around classic rock with local bands and for more information on tickets please call our office on 0141 942 8684.

A local festival will celebrate an array of lesser-known beers and ales this Easter The Burnbrae Beer Festival 2017 takes place at the popular pub and restaurant on Milngavie Road, Milngavie, from April 7 to 17. There has been a very fast growth in the number of smaller breweries and the production of craft beers and ales across the UK and this 10-day event offers the opportunity to sample a variety of drinks. To keep track of the event see Burnbrae Beer Festival 2017 on Facebook or contact www.eating-inn.co.uk/house/ burnbrae-bearsden.

The Community Magazine page will allow you to be updated with events, information and stories on a more regular basis and simply by going on-line. To stay informed you should “like” and follow the page at www.facebook.com/Community MagazineBearsdenandMilngavie. BoWs and arroWs fUn Eight staff at your Community Magazine enjoyed an archery session with the Clyde Arrows at Milngavie & Bearsden Sports Club. They discovered it’s a fun and highly accessible sport with challenges and rewards for all ages and abilities. The have-a-go archers played in pairs, shooting a 60-inch target face on the outdoor pitch at a distance of 10 metres. The knock-out competition was won by Stuart Mainland, the magazine’s Director. He said: “It was a great afternoon and something new and different to try. It worked really well as a staff afternoon trip.” The Clyde Arrows was founded almost 30 years ago in Clydebank and has since moved to the local sports club. The nonprofit, volunteer club now has a membership of around 80 members, including senior, junior and disability sections. There are two indoor ranges and an outdoor range where

Boclair House now lines up in the national awards competition later this month. The highly regarded Scottish Hotel Awards is operated by Paragraph Publishing, publishers of Scotland Magazine and organiser of awards and events nationally and internationally. The hotel, on Milngavie Road, also added another accolade to its growing list of awards when it was named Wedding Hotel of the Year at the Prestige Awards. Boclair House fought off strong competition against such acclaimed venues as Sherbrooke Castle Hotel in Glasgow and Brig O’Doon House Hotel in Ayrshire.

Fallon Cowley, group operations director of Manorview Hotels and Leisure Group said: “Boclair House Hotel only opened last year after a massive refurbishment programme and I’m delighted to see it winning awards already. This is welldeserved recognition.” Now Boclair House Hotel has further reason to celebrate with its first birthday party taking place on April 1. A Great Gatsby themed event will be held in the Grand Ballroom starting at 7pm. A percentage of proceeds from the party will support Glasgow-based charity Cure Crohn’s Colitis. Tickets are £49 per person or a table of 10 for £450 and include a three-course meal, a welcoming glass of Prosecco and entertainment. See www.boclairhousehotel.co.uk

'Seems like

we're in

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
