romy’s miss uniVerse challenges
Romy McCahill, 22, will be one of 40 women taking part in the 2016 Miss Universe Great Britain in south Wales this July. The young musician teaches piano at Art at The Grange in Milngavie and is also a successful model. She gained a place at the Miss Universe Great Britain contest after winning the Miss Earth Scotland pageant. It was her first pageant. Romy says: “I'm so excited to have made it through to the Miss Universe Great Britain final. I hadn't told anyone I was thinking about entering or even when I was invited along to the interviews because I didn't want to jinx anything. Of thousands who had interviews, only 41 girls made it through to the fi nal.” Romy hopes that the Miss Universe experience will help to raise awareness of various charity projects that she is involved with, including The Mini

Rucksack Project, which is being organised by Art at The Grange in Grange Road, Milngavie, this month. The new initiative aims to help refugee children from Syria. Romy has volunteered as a co-ordinator for the Mini Rucksack Project and recently assisted a local Primary 7 Advanced Art Class with sorting out some of the donated rucksacks. Bearsden and Milngavie residents can contribute to the Mini Rucksack campaign by donating a recycled rucksack or old school bag and filling it with clothes, shoes, and a toilet bag with toothpaste, toothbrush, soap and flannel. The rucksack should be marked as suitable for a boy or girl. Art at the Grange will add drawing and art materials to each rucksack, which should be handed in between April 2 and 8. Last year, Romy raised £2,500 for the charity, Alzheimer Scotland. She says: “This is a cause very close to me and my family's heart. This year I’d like to raise more than I did in 2015.” In the run up to the Miss Universe

Members of Milngavie Football Club are delighted to have received two important awards from the Scottish Football Association. The club is now recognised as a SFA Quality Mark Disabled Club and a SFA Quality Mark Disability Inclusive Club. Caroline Diaz, the club’s secretary, says: “We are so pleased to be given these two accolades. The
first, the SFA Quality mark, comes thanks to our team of 16 coaches who work incredibly hard to provide the right environment for disabled children. “The second award, the Quality Mark Disability Inclusive Club,

The club wants to thank the coaches Derek Glass, Des Spence and Iain MacDonald, and the children and helpers, Sandy Christie, Ben McManus, Archie Spence, Connor Bayers, Angus McIver, Pat Spence, Stuart MacDonald, Campbell Justice and Elliot McLeary. Caroline’s ambition has been to encourage more people of all ages and abilities to join in regular sessions at Milngavie FC, formerly known as Milngavie Boys’ Club. It was after seeing the first-hand frustrations faced by her disabled nephew in finding a football club, that she decided Milngavie FC would also welcome people with a range of disabilities. help make parkrun local The worldwide running phenomenon parkrun is calling for volunteers to assist in the set up of a regular event in a nearby community. The goal is to hold a Saturday parkrun in Drumchapel, which would offer runners in Bearsden and Milngavie their closest event to date.

Every Saturday thousands of runners turn up at more than 800 parkruns in communities spread across more than a dozen countries. The aim of the parkruns, which started in London in 2004, is to offer a free 5k – 2k for juniors – timed run for all types of people. But each parkrun requires a dedicated team of volunteers to make it sustainable. Liz Corbett, Lead Ambassador (Scotland) parkrun UK, is keen to see the launch of a Drumchapel parkrun. She says: “We would very much like to start a Drumchapel parkrun but until we know we can keep it going every Saturday at 9.30am we can’t launch it. “The current situation is that we have the start-up funding, which is great, and there is a
group looking at the details of the course, so that just leaves the volunteers. “We need people who are willing to be Run Directors, that’s the person who will take charge of the event on the day, timekeepers, marshalls, tail runners, bar code scanners, results processors and more. Volunteers don't need to help every Saturday just whenever they want which means that we need lots of people to help.” Currently the closest parkruns for local residents are at Victoria Park, Pollock and Tollcross. Alistair Haydock, leader of Jog Scotland Milngavie, says: “It would be great for people in Bearsden and Milngavie if there was a parkrun in Drumchapel.” If you can offer help or you would like to know more contact Liz at liz.corbett@parkrun.com or you can call her on 0141 427 7914. Trail race returns IN 2016
Entries have opened for the Milngavie Trail Race on Saturday June 5, with the start and finish at the HQ of the 20th Glasgow (1st Milngavie) Scout Group in Lennox Park in Milngavie. The race, which incudes 500ft of ascent, will head along the trails of the West Highland Way and Mugdock Country Park. It is an official Scottish Athletics race. The route will be fully waymarked and marshalled and finishers will be rewarded with a medal and
refreshments. Any funds raised from the event will go towards improvements and repairs to the Scout hall and its grounds. Milngavie Trail Race is the brainchild of Graeme Reid, a runner of more than 30 years and a Cub Scout leader. He says: “The idea for the race came about because I’ve enjoyed taking part in lots of different events and I thought our local trails would be ideal for a race. “I also thought the trail race

would be a great way to get our Scout group, across all the different ages, involved in something together. We’ve about 150 members and it’s a rare opportunity to get everyone involved in one event.” Graeme was delighted with the success of the first race. He says: “It was a sell out, which was fantastic. Another great outcome was the home-baking that was provided by family and friends of our Scout group. It has already become legendary among local runners.” The Milngavie Trail Race includes chip timing and all runners will receive a race number. Prizes will be awarded for the first three male and female finishers and the overall male and female winners. There are 250 places available this year. Jaw Beer, a local craft brewery will be supporting the race this year and in addition to a medal and more cake than you can eat, finishers will be presented with a bottle of Jaw Brew beer. An historic and iconic Grade B listed building in Bearsden has reopened as a luxury hotel after an extensive £3 million refurbishment. Owners, the independent Scottish hotel group Manorview Hotels, believe Boclair House Hotel will become one of the country’s most prestigious wedding venues. The first wedding takes place this month (April) with a further 67 weddings and special occasions booked before the end of 2017.
It has 12 individually styled suites, a stand-alone restaurant and a grand ballroom.
Steve Graham is managing director of Manorview Hotels & Leisure Group. He said: “We are delighted to be opening Boclair House Hotel. It is a stunning venue and we expect to host Located at the foot of Boclair Hill many happy occasions over and set in two acres of landscaped the years. gardens, Boclair House Hotel will “The fact that we already have bookings for 67 weddings and be available for exclusive-use weddings, special occasion dining, special occasions shows the level of interest in this new venue.” celebrations and afternoon tea.
The building was constructed in 1890 in a Tudor gothic style, commissioned by three Buchanan sisters of Bellfield. It was called the Buchanan Retreat and provided accommodation for poorer members of the Buchanan clan in their declining years. Latterly, it became a home for elderly gentlemen until acquired by the Burgh of Bearsden and opened as the Municipal Buildings by Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon in 1962. Its most recent use before being turned into a hotel was as the council’s educational department headquarters. Further information from enquiries@boclairhousehotel.co.uk

DIET DANGERS A small dog was treated at Glenbrae Vets after suffering kidney failure. The dog had been fed "natural" high-protein treats. Vets advise that treats should always be fed with caution and they should never form a major part of a dog's diet.
VETS VISITS Bearsden Vets4Pets were recently visited by the 11th Bearsden Brownies. The children are working towards their Friends to Animals badge and the trip allowed them to look at the role of the vet in the community. The girls enjoyed an interactive tour of the practice. Vet John Sheppard says: “It was fantastic to show the Brownies what we do and to hopefully inspire a future generation of vets.
In addition, the word "natural" is not an indicator of quality. Treats are often high in fats and some have added sugar and colourings and are rarely healthy. There are some good ranges of holistic treats available but they should be kept as “treats. If you require dietary help or advice ask to speak to one of Glenbrae's veterinary nurses.

body and have the potential to grow into certain cell lines. It’s now possible to harvest these cells and then grow them in a laboratory. Once grown, the cells can be implanted to areas of the body that require healing. Glenbrae Vets is offering this therapy to help pets with arthritic problems. Vetinerary nurse Angela, says: “The cells are harvested from fat and blood and injected into arthritic joints. This can help to heal damaged areas of the body and improve pain and mobility. “In future, it’s thought that many other conditions may be cured with this treatment.

new hQ For nursery
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn This month:
Mosshead Pre-school has settled in well to their new premises at Bearsden Ski Club on The Mound, Stockiemuir Road. The nursery was based at Mosshead Primary School nearby but due to logistical reasons it was required to move location last August. The children now benefit from a large, bright playroom and a lovely natural outdoors environment at the ski club, which means they have plenty of opportunities for playing, exploring and discovering. Susan Miller, the nursery manager, says: “The new establishment offers the youngsters the opportunity to become confident learners as they make friends and have fun. We are delighted with our new premises. "We also use the local community to support and extend the children's learning and have established good community links with local services." In partnership with East

Dunbartonshire Council, the pre-school nursery accepts funded and non-funded children from their third birthday until school age. Sessions are in the morning and parents can request additional childcare of 50 minutes at lunch-time.
The new establishment offers the youngsters the opportunity to become confident learners... The group offers an excellent staff-to-children ratio and is rightly proud of its good Education Scotland and Care Inspection report. TOO SWEET TO BE WHOLESOME?
Last month the Chancellor’s announcement of a sugar tax was met with negative headlines in Scotland, including “The Irn Chancellor”, “Shares in Irn Bru plummet” and “Irn Brute”. The suggestion was that this would penalise Scots unfairly, focussing on Scotland’s “other national drink”. Unfortunately, it seemed that the real message was lost! In Scotland we eat or drink three times the recommended amount of sugar, increasing risks of obesity and tooth decay. Scotland has the second highest rate of obesity in Europe, and can lead
to diabetes, heart disease, premature death and even some cancers, costing the NHS around £500 million every year. Sugary drinks are a common source of sugar intake, and research shows that taxing these drinks could reduce the numbers of obese people in Scotland by 27,000. Sugar taxes have already been introduced in many other countries such as France, Australia and America. When the carrier bag charge was first introduced it was criticised, but it has been very effective in reducing wasteful use of bags. The sugar tax may seem a small step, but may help us create a healthier image of Scotland!

alking in the Scottish mountains is my favourite way to recharge my batteries – and a recent trip with MMC proved to be the perfect antidote to a stressful week of work. With snow still thick on the ground, I joined eight members for a winter’s hike to the summit of two Munros, Ben Cruachan and Stob Diamh, in the west Highlands. The two peaks had been on my Munro bagging radar for a couple of years and I could hardly believe my luck as we walked in calm, sunny conditions
beneath a blue sky. Any worries about being accepted by the club members were quickly dispelled. I felt welcomed and enjoyed getting to know two of the walkers during the drive from Milngavie to the Falls of Cruachan railway station. I had been concerned, too, that I might not be able to match the pace of the experienced hikers. Many members of the club have walked at least one full round of Munros, the mountains in Scotland with a summit of at least 3,000ft. Yet, I discovered that the outing was meant to be

enjoyable and easy-going rather than record-breaking. As we walked, we also talked and I found I had common interests – and even mutual friends – among the eight hikers. A long day in the mountains always goes by much faster if you have interesting people to chat to. Thankfully they are also a kind group. When I realised I’d stupidly left my lunch in my vehicle they each offered me some of their lunches. When I stepped up to my knee in a burn of cold water, Steve gave me one of his spare socks.

Our chat also included lots of oohing and ahhing at the fabulous views. This area of the Highlands is beautiful at any time of the year but with a thick blanket of snow lying on the ground above 450m the vistas were spectacular. Luckily, the snow had been well consolidated thanks to low temperatures and hiking over a hard-packed top layer was a joy. Sometimes it can be easier to hike to a summit on hard snow than on rough and stony terrain. The amazing weather had brought out many walkers for
this nine-mile circuit with more than 4500ft of ascent. Almost 20 of us enjoyed a communal lunchtime picnic on the summit of Ben Cruachan at 3694ft. A hike along a lofty and snowy ridge saw us descend more than 700ft before we climbed again to reach the lower Munro summit of Stob Diamh at 3274ft. Our group had split into two to suit the different walking speeds and five of us stopped on the top to take in yet more fabulous views and another bite to eat. The walk out of the glen was long and tiring but with so many
new people to talk to I was never bored. During this stretch I enjoyed chatting with the club founder Dave Kingswood. He formed MCC some 30 years ago and today there are many long-standing members. The club offers a busy year-round programme of hikes, climbs and weekends away. Dave told me he would like to see more younger people joining MCC. I can thoroughly recommend the group as welcoming, experienced and great fun. See milngaviemountaineeringclub.org

helensburgh geTs local cinema March 25th, 2016: The Tower Digital Arts Centre today announced that it is opening a cinema in Helensburgh on the 15th April which will show the latest cinema releases. The Tower, a local charity which was formed in 2014, will be opening two digital cinema screens inside the converted church complex building which is located on the corners of Sinclair and West King Streets in the heart of the town. The Centre, which recently opened the only Apple Authorised Training Centre in the West of Scotland as well as becoming the home for University of the Highlands and Islands (creative industries courses commence April 18th) in Helensburgh, was recently reclassified as a class 11 site (Entertainment centre) enabling it to offer the latest films. Helensburgh which has a long and strong association with film makers and actors (Deborah Kerr, The Clyde Family, Mary Ure & Tom Vaughan to name a few), had its last cinema ‘La Scala’ close in 1980. Over the years there have been unsuccessful
attempts to raise grants and secure government funds for a new cinema. The Tower has raised all of the funds required from corporate sponsorships and social loans. Over the past 12 months the new arts centre has hosted live theatre, national orchestras, ballets, traditional musicians and bands, and created new events as well introducing streamed live events from the National Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, Met and Royal Opera and in doing so built up a local following of over 8,000 who've come through its doors. The Tower is the main supplier of cinema services to the Royal Navy and will offer special screenings for mothers and babies, retirees, seniors and silver screeners and will operate weekend matinees for children. The Centre plans to be open seven days 10 until 10 and is recruiting ushers and front of house staff to coincide with the official cinema opening.
For details about employment opportunities see www.facebook. com/TheTowerHelensburgh. The Tower recent signed its first exhibition agreement with Walt Disney films and will be screening their latest blockbuster ‘The Jungle Book’ from its international release date the 15th of April. The Gala opening of these new community assets will also be the start date for ten new employees at The Tower who will be joining the volunteers and Friends of the Tower at the opening. A full schedule of the films on offer can be seen at the www.TowerCinema.org. ‘We will be scheduling the latest films and are working with the groups in the town to deliver appropriate content to all groups in the area’ said Nicola Jamieson The Tower’s General Manager. ‘The Tower is evolving into a hub for the town’s digital, cultural & learning organisations and the new Cinemas are a very important part of that’ she added.

GOLF’S THE TONIC... With nearly everything being a young person’s game these days, this bus pass equipped hack would like to sing the praises of senior golf (writes Nick Cowie) It may not keep you looking younger - but you’ll certainly feel it. Older members may not always be the best players but they are keen and nobody says anything when you completely miss the ball. I read an excellent golf feature by my former colleague Colin Dunne recently. A late recruit to the game himself, he memorably described his playing pals as: “A shambling tribe limping up the hill. It’s hard not to laugh. Helmets with ear-flaps like Russian generals, padded jackets like Michelin men, trousers that end just before the knee, the odd tantalising glimpse of long-john and waterproofs that would see you round the Horn in a force 10. ‘They look like the Light Brigade,’ I heard one man say. ‘On the way back.’

“Seniors, they are called in the world of golf or, as the less generous put it, old gits. Old gits we may be but I think our time has come.” Your playing companions may once have been powerful men of business, teachers, electricians, even the odd politician or judge. No one cares, you stand united in the ever frustrating obsession of guiding a wee ball into a hole. It is certainly well proven that golf is good for your mental health. We seniors can forget where we put our spectacles, car keys and occasionally our children’s names, but that round five years ago when we came in ten under par, we can, and believe me given half a chance, we will, recount every

shot in loving detail. You’ll also have something in common with the President of the United States of America..Mr Obama told an interviewer: “It’s a game that I keep on thinking I should be good at but somehow the ball goes this way and that way and never goes straight.” Well Mr Prez, this extraordinary ability of a golf ball to start off in the right direction and then start to turn like an airborne banana may be one of the lesser known facts of the laws of aerodynamics, but it is intimately known by every hack golfer, it is a great game whether you are eight or eighty. April 2016 | Legal Matters
Parking banner is a winner Milngavie Primary School pupil Ethna Murry has designed a winning banner to encourage parents to think of alternative ways to take children to school. The Primary 6 pupil’s design included the strap-line: “Please be a star and don’t come in your car.” The school competition was part of a project, organised by the school and in partnership with East Dunbartonshire Council’s Community Safety team. Ethna’s banner is now displayed on the school gates. Convener of Education, Councillor Maureen Henry, said, “I hope this banner makes parents think twice about driving to school and prompts them to consider all different options available for the journey to school.”
Household Tips Legal Matters COLOUR CODED KEYS
If you find that in your household you have a lot of keys that you tend to mix up, why not colour code them? With a bit of paint or even nail varnish you can paint the top of the key so you can find the right one quicker. Another bonus is its cheaper than buying already coloured ones.

This month: PRE-NUPTIAL AGREEMENTS The idea of entering a prenuptial agreement is not necessarily the most romantic notion. However, as more people are entering second marriages or marrying later in life there are often assets in their own name they would wish to protect. In Scotland, ‘pre-nups’, also known as ante-nuptial or marriage contacts, are generally accepted as legally binding contracts and are useful in allowing individuals to ‘ring-fence’ certain assets from forming part of the matrimonial pot. A marriage contract may be of interest to someone who runs their own business or has property or savings

Clements Hearing is excited to launch HyperSound Clear™ A first-of-its-kind directed audio system designed to help you hear the TV better. This breakthrough hearing solution offers a fundamentally new way to deliver sound, and has the potential to revolutionize the home listening experience for individuals with hearing loss and their families.

in their own name. It can also be useful to regulate financial provision for one of the parties in the event of separation or divorce. Like any contract, it can be challenged at a later date. However, so long as it can be shown to have been fair and reasonable at the time parties entered the agreement then the terms should be upheld. It is therefore important that both parties seek individual legal advice well in advance of the ceremony date. An open and honest conversation with your partner prior to marriage can allow parties to enter into an agreement and subsequently reduce protracted and emotionally difficult litigation in the event of divorce.

This month: Senior Skin Care Tips As we get older, our skin tends to get more sensitive and thus needs extra care and protection. Eat the Right Foods: Eat foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These foods help the skin look and feel good. Helpful foods include: green vegetables, melons, berries, walnuts, salmon, and avocados. Stay Hydrated: The sensation of thirst decreases in seniors. Drinking lots of water helps hydrate skin from the inside out, so remember to drink plenty of fluids daily to prevent dehydration.
Blair Johnstone, of Boclair Academy, won silver in the 50m backstroke.
Sun Protection: The sun dries out skin faster than anything else. Wear protective clothing when going out in
The swimmers earned their place at the competition by recording competitive times at the East Dunbartonshire heats last October.

Avoid Harsh Soaps: Most seniors do not lead an overly active life and so do not need to vigorously scrub the skin on a daily basis. Washing the face with water or a mild soap is sufficient and ensure the bath water isn’t too hot! Use a Good Skin Cream: Choosing a good moisturizing skin cream with natural ingredients such as: vitamin A, vitamin E, aloe cucumber extract and natural antioxidants. Air Condition: Using a humidifier will help prevent the damaging effects that cold dry air can cause to your skin.

A befriending support project is looking for new volunteers to help meet a rise in demand for their service in our local communities. The East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action (EDVA) Befriending Project wants to hear from people aged over 18 who can commit to giving at least two hours of their time every fortnight or month to being a befriender. Catherine Buchanan, of EDVA says: “We have a growing need for befrienders in the area, especially because we have an ageing population. Many of the people who use our service are elderly, but they might also be disabled or housebound for a range of reasons. “These are people who have
become isolated and would benefit hugely from having regular social meet ups with befrienders.” Befrienders might meet with their "befriendee" in their home for a coffee and a chat or take them out to a café or to do an activity, such as going to the cinema or for a walk in a park.
“The benefi t to befrienders and befriendees is often mutual. The aim is for both people to have fun Catherine reveals that befrienders and we think that the Befriending Project is a very rewarding thing also benefit from their volunteering. She says: “Although to volunteer for. We hope to befrienders do need to be able to hear from people who might be interested.” give their time for free they are never out of pocket and they can To fi nd out more contact EDVA gain personal rewards from on 0141 578 6680 or email their befriending. info@edva.org

“Our service offers training for the befrienders and pays for the required disclosure certificate. Any travel or costs incurred while befriending are covered as well. And we find that many befrienders gain a lot of satisfaction from their volunteering. In some cases, they enjoy improved confidence and well-being and also a better sense of purpose.

“However, we had noticed that there had been some erosion He says: “The Mugdock paths and and weather damage and we approached the ranger service to trails are popular with our club and we often ride them when we volunteer our help.”
“The work with the mountain bikers has been on-going over several years and this time they have also been assisting with new systems to keep water and rain off the West Highland Way. The work is of benefit to all users of the park.” In partnership with the rangers, GMBC members have spent four sessions in 2016 on various park projects, with another one planned for this month. Graham says: “The work can be quite tiring but it is rewarding. It’s also a sociable activity and we have met new people through the sessions. We feel that it’s our way to put something back into the park with some good, honest graft.” The next path maintenance session is from 10am to 3pm on April 16. See www.gmbc.org.uk for more details.

Business sparks: PARK COTTAGE DENTAL PRACTICE
and know the patients very well. Gillian has been with Park Cottage since she graduated from Glasgow Dental School more than 10 years ago and has built up a very loyal patient base. Barry moved to Park Cottage four years ago after a decade working in the west end of Glasgow. Barry said: “We are proud to be part of a historic and respected dental practice in Bearsden. Our focus is very much on offering a family friendly service and we make it our priority to build lifelong relationships with patients. While myself and Gillian are now taking the practice forwards we want patients to know that it is business as usual.
Family orientated dental care has long been at the heart of well-respected Park Cottage Dental Practice in Bearsden. And this is exactly how the two principal dentists now at the helm of the community-based practice plan to continue. While the popular practice has been established in the community for more than five decades, and run for 25 years on Roman Road by Rod Renton, the future of the business is now in
the safe hands of Barry Simpson and Gillian McAlindon. Rod has stepped back from his role at the helm of Park Cottage – although he still practices parttime – and experienced dentists Barry and Gillian have stepped up. Both Barry and Gillian have been with the practice for many years
EMPATHY CAN CHANGE LIVES
Empathic coaching isn’t about ‘being positive’ or using self affirmations, it’s about working with reality and developing the skills you need to live a deeply satisfying life. It’s been a major tool in helping me reveal the support and guidance that I need. I’m happier with my choices and able to find compassion for myself when I make ones I regret. It isn’t a magic wand, change takes time and effort. I want to live in a world where everyone can experience this level of support and trust in life. We cannot do it alone.
Park Cottage Dental Practice offers a full range of dental care for all ages including preventative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and implants. It takes on new NHS patients and also has private options with a practice plan on offer. See www.bearsdendentist.co.uk.

The Milngavie mum-of-four was attracted by the opportunity to audition for a role in the 2015 production, Top Girls, and was delighted to land the character of Pope Joan.
