Hub to open next month
The new Bearsden Community Hub is set to open next month, less than a year after work started to transform the former Burgh Hall. The £3million project to create a new community facility began in April 2016 and as the building nears completion – hitting targets to open “early 2017” – work has now moved to the interior. The Hub will include a customer service area, public meeting rooms, social work facilities and a library, as well as new hall facilities. Council Leader Rhondda Geekie said: "The progress in the build has been remarkable and is testament to all the planning and hard work
96%
that continues to be put in by the council and our partners. "The development of the Community Hub along with the nearby Kilmardinny House will see nearly £6million of investment within Bearsden. This is a key element of our commitment to supporting development within the area. “Community Hubs are also an important element of our longterm vision for effective, efficient, customer-focused services in East Dunbartonshire.”
John Hope, board director for development partner Hub West Scotland, said: “The partnership between East Dunbartonshire Council and hub West Scotland has resulted in some fabulous buildings now in use by the local communities.
to get to this stage given the challenges”.
“Bearsden Hub will be an amazing transformation of an existing building into a bright and modern facility delivering diverse services.”
He said: “I’m sure that the local community will agree with me that the building’s new frontage looks brilliant, creating a welcoming appearance, while the new internal layout utilises space well, something which is typified by the new first floor arrangement that offers stunning views across the town.
Director of construction company CCG, Calum Murray, reports that the Hub has been a complicated build programme but that the site team has “done very well
“CCG, along with our partners East Dunbartonshire Council and hWS are very much looking forward to bringing the project to completion.”

children who already play the instrument. Bearsden Academy Pipe Band is now an integral part of the school’s music group ensemble and has performed at various concerts.
Fraser MacInnes, General Manager of the College of Piping in Glasgow, puts his keen students through some chanter lessons
A forward-thinking schools programme to encourage more children to take up the bagpipes is a fast-growing success in Bearsden. The East Dunbartonshire Schools’ Piping Project was the brainchild of Fraser MacInnes, general manager of the College of Piping in Glasgow. He believed there was a need to engage with a younger generation and to provide the opportunity for children in local primary and secondary schools to learn our national instrument. The project launched in January 2016 after being sanctioned by
the Education Authority and the Instrumental Services, which are responsible for peripatetic instrument tuition.
Like last year, the band will represent East Dunbartonshire at the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships in 2017. Some of the players have also passed SQA exams in the subject at the College of Piping. Fraser said: “I’m delighted by the interest and growth of piping in the Bearsden schools. The project has been endorsed by the Director of Education and the Head of Instrumental Services – and has been highly praised by all the schools involved.” Now there are plans to roll out the project to other schools in the authority, including Milngavie, Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch and Lenzie.
Currently, there are almost 60 P6 and P7 pupils from four Bearsden The College of Piping, a primary schools – Mosshead, Baljaffray, Castlehill and Bearsden registered charity, has raised – participating in chanter lessons. thousands of pounds in grants and donations to help support An after-school pipe band club the project. was also created at Bearsden Academy for secondary school

The botanicals include those that the Hazells have grown or ones foraged locally, such as bulrush, bay, ground elder and blackcurrant. Mike and Alison Hazell inspect their fi rst delivery of their 'Forager Gin'
A local brewer and keen forager has struck upon a creative idea to make a gin that utilises ingredients found in the wild near his home. Mark Hazell, who runs the successful micro-brewery Jaw Brew with his wife Alison, collects wild food ingredients during daily dog walks close to his Bardowie home, The Jaw.
The bottle is also something of a masterpiece with a label that is “fused” on to the glass using a special “heat and melt method”. Mark says: “We wanted to do something a little bit special with the bottle and the fusing method means the label is nonremovable. The design is fused with the glass.
He realised the products would make the perfect basis for a small batch craft gin, which the company has now launched as “Forager Gin by Hazell & Hazell”.
“The idea for producing gin came from the fact that as a new microbrewery, we were encountering small batch gin producers at many of the trade “In addition, our neighbour, artist shows and consumer fairs that we Nikky D’Aiguilar, has allowed attended. us to use her artwork on the ‘watchstrap’ closure. Money raised at Westerton Gala Day has been put to good use with the creation of a newly carved community bench. The beautiful bespoke bench was designed and sculpted by Iain Chalmers of Chainsaw Creations and depicts a pretty woodland setting. An owl and a hedgehog sit at one end of the 8ft cedar bench seat, while a squirrel and a bear sit at the other. The back of the bench features colourful fl owers, ladybirds and butterfl ies. “The bench is a wee spot for people to sit for a while or simply to admire as they pass by or go in and out of the halls. It did take a while for Iain to do the carving because he is so much in demand but we really like what he has carved for Westerton.” Like many people in the local communities, Kim, who is treasurer of Bearsden West Community Council, has long admired the work of Chainsaw Creations. She said: “Many people fi rst saw Iain’s work at Kilmardinny Loch in Bearsden. After that, wood sculptures and benches started popping up in Bearsden and Milngavie and also in Westerton. “They offer a lovely enhancement to the natural environment and also encourage people to take a walk to visit them. We are delighted with the new bench.”

Nina added: “I thought it was really fun, too, and I liked the whole race. It was short but that was good because it was so cold.” 14 year-old Mia Padmanabhan was fi rst female and fourth overall
Nina Padmanabhan came second in the under-nine catagory
Two Bearsden sisters were delighted to win podium places at a junior duathlon event that took place on a chilly New Year’s Day. Fourteen-year-old Mia Padmanabhan, who attends Bearsden Academy, was fi rst female and fourth overall in the New Year’s Day Duathlon, organised by Edinburgh Triathletes in Scotland’s capital city. Her sister, eight-year-old Nina, who is in P4 at Bearsden PS, came second in her under-nine category and 20th overall.
The junior duathlon runs alongside the popular New Year’s Day Triathlon for adults with a base. Aimed at young athletes, aged eight to 15, the duathlon includes a 500m run followed by a 2km bike ride and then another 500m run, all on closed roads.
Dad Neal was impressed by how the girls coped. He said: “Temperatures were only just above freezing and although the race was short the girls found it very cold. Nina ended up running in her bike helmet because her hands were to cold to undo the strap. “The race was well organised and the atmosphere was friendly. I think I might enter the adult triathlon race next year.”
GTC youth coach Wendy Gorman said: “The girls did very well and it was a well deserved win The triathlon is based at the Royal for Mia, who is part of our Commonwealth Pool with a 400m Development Squad.” swim, an 11-mile cycle three times www.glasgowtriathlonclub.co.uk

Grab a Great mortGaGe deal Although the long term impact of Brexit and the recent elections result in the United States on future mortgate interest rates is uncertain, action can be taken now to fix your repayments. Borrowers with fixed rate mortgages ending as far away as July 2017 could consider getting hold of a new deal now before these low rates potentially disappear.
Next to purchasing your home, choosing the right mortgage is probably one of the most important decisions you will make when you are looking for a new deal.
Since the Bank of England lowered the base rate to 0.25 per cent, there have been a number of new two year fixed deals appearing on the market at interest rates never seen before.
Making the wrong choice about your mortgage can result in you having to pay hundreds if not thousands of pounds more than you need to pay.
Although these two year deals may seem attractive and could suit some borrowers, they may not be the best choice for those people whose fixed rate deal ends while the UK may be experiencing potentially difficult times going through the process of leaving the EU.
For further information on how you could potentially save money each month on your mortgage and secure your future repayments, call The Mortgage Advice Service on 0800 011 2827 or logon to www.themortgageadvice service.co.uk

Some twenty years on he is not shaken in this belief which was recently vindicated by the results of a Which report concerning hearing care provision, wherein the independent sector (often small service providers such as ourselves) outperformed both the NHS and all the large national chains. This report is readily available online or in the Which magazine and you can read more about it on our blog. al Clements has been involved in the practice since its inception in 1996 and is a now co director with Greg. February 2017 | What's Up Doc?
Folk star Drever plays Milngavie
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: A GIANT LEAP FOR MEN?
Milngavie Folk Club welcomes Scottish solo artist and songwriter Kris Drever during his 10th anniversary tour. Drever has been described by MOJO, one of the world’s leading music magazines, as a “serious talent”. He will play The Fraser Centre, Milngavie, on March 1 at 7.30pm. Drever’s tour is supporting his new album, his first in six years, called If Wishes Were Horses. If Wishes Were Horses is a collection of semi-biographical songs covering the universal, and not so universal, themes of education, politics, sex, love, ennui, self-employment, social migration and Shetland.
Many of Drever’s songs have been inspired by his move back to the Northern Isles, Shetland this time rather than his native Orkney, and the discovery of new lyrical voices to describe his life, times and wild new surroundings. Helping Kris realise the album are the renowned guitar genius Ian Carr, bassist Euan Burton and Admiral Fallow frontman Louis Abbott on drums and vocals. Drever is hugely admired as a solo artist, collaborator and member of folk superstars Lau. Tickets are £15. See www.tickets.jmsconcerts.co.uk
A recent trial of “multiparametric” MRI scanners to help specialists diagnose prostate cancer has been announced as a giant leap forward in identifying cancerous areas in the gland earlier and more accurately, and may become available in coming years. A quarter of all new cancers in men are caused by prostate cancer, and men have a 1 in 8 risk of developing it. There is no simple test for it, so doctors depend upon men reporting troublesome symptoms.
These include problems passing urine, including reduced flow, dribbling or pain, blood in the urine, or sometimes even persisting back pain. Similarly testicular cancer diagnosis depends upon men checking themselves and reporting lumps early. This can be embarrassing to discuss, but doctors are used to talking about these things and would prefer you discuss things early, to rule out cancer, or if necessary arrange early treatments, which with new advances are becoming steadily more effective.

Milngavie Community Development Trust has been working hard since being founded in April to make a positive difference to life in the town. The non-profi t making limited company is run by volunteers and supported by people who live, or are interested, in Milngavie. Ideas from local people led to a Community Action Plan (CAP) and the group aims to turn these ideas into reality. Here is a round up of some of the MCDT projects. Milngavie Week: MCDT was instrumental in driving forward the return of Milngavie Week, which took place in June. The event was hailed a success and plans are progressing for a “bigger and better” Milngavie week in 2017. MCDT welcomes ideas for the event.
Fund for plots: Responding to a community desire and new laws, EDC have made available capital funding for a new allotment site in Milngavie. MCDT is asking residents to choose a suitable site and register their interest.
Fair of Clubs: In September, MCDT were behind Milngavie’s fi rst Fair of Clubs and Societies. Some 400 visitors visited 30 stalls in just fi ve hours in the Town Hall. More projects: Other ideas include a Community Cinema; Future of lennox Park: Lennox enhancing the reservoir Park is the focus of a programme experience; an Allander Water of improvements thanks to a Corepath; and supporting the partnership between MCDT housebound and vulnerable. and the council. Physicians of the 1800s commonly advised their patients to eat chocolate to calm their pining for lost love.
In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentineʻs Day card. In Finland Valentineʻs Day is called Ystävänpäivä, which translates into “Friendʻs day”. It's more about remembering your buddies than your loved ones.
Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future spouse.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve."

A new national number, 105, has been launched by all electricity network operators that offers a one-stop information hub for electricity information. When you dial 105, you will be put through to your local electricity network operator – the company that manages the cables, power lines and substations that deliver electricity in your area. Ringing 105 is free and everyone can use it, regardless of where you buy your electricity from. You can also call 105 if you spot damage to electricity power lines and substations that could be dangerous.

This month: PRIVATE TENANTS All tenants have the right to live in a property that is fit for human habitation. The expectations for this can be wide ranging. However, at a minimum the structure and services should be in a reasonable state of repair. It is the landlord's duty to ensure this standard is maintained. In the event you have concerns regarding your property you should raise them directly with your landlord and allow them the opportunity of addressing the possible problem. However, thereafter, under S.22(1) of the Housing (Scotland) Act 2006, private tenants have the remedy of applying for a Repairing Standard
Enforcement Order (RSEO). This order, if granted, will require the landlord to carry out the necessary repair work within a specified time scale. The order is registered against the title deeds and will not be revoked until the work has been certified as completed. In circumstances where a landlord simply refuses to comply with the order the local council can be asked to carry out the work. They will in turn recover the cost from the landlord, who will also receive a fine for non compliance. The tenant could also be granted rent relief of up to 90% until the work is completed.
Alzheimer’s Research Studies...You can register now
Do you have Alzheimer’s disease? Are you on treatment with Aricept? Are you worried your memory is getting worse? Are you well but would like to take part in Alzheimer’s research? If any of the above apply and you would like to be considered for a suitable research study contact us on 0141 948 0206 ‘Pioneering New Treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease’ The only centre in Scotland that has conducted research on all of the currently licensed treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.

Run a race with your dog Canicross is a fast growing sport and sees owners running with their dogs. Harley, a three-yearold German Shepherd, was brought in to see locum vet Nikki at Avalon Veterinary Clinic in Milngavie with a 2.5-inch rusty screw embedded in her paw.
Many canicross events now take place across Scotland and this month Canisports Scotland will host two races at Mugdock Country Park. The event on Sunday, February 19 is organised by Karen Connal, the founder of Canisports Scotland. She says: “I fi rst saw canicross about nine years ago when I was showing one of my dogs at Crufts and I thought it looked like a lot of fun. “After trying the sport and then racing I become hooked on it and now I organise training sessions and races.” Karen thinks Mugdock is the perfect place for canicross races. She says: “The trails
are great for runners and for dogs alike so it’s a brilliant venue for putting on a good race.” The races start at 10am and include a 5k Canicross for runners aged 15 and over and a 2.5k Canicross race for kids aged seven-plus. All runners must have a dog tied to them to run the full
distance. The cost is £10 for 5k and £7 for 2.5k and children. Entries for the race close at midnight on Monday February 13. See www.entrycentral.com/ MugdockFeb17. For more details see www. canisportsscotland.com. Also see “Cani-Sport East Dunbartonshire” and “Cani-fi t” on Facebook for local training sessions.
She was sedated for treatment and an X-ray revealed that while the nail had not reached bone it was stuck in soft tissue and rust fragments were seen deeper in her pad. Nikki removed the screw then made the wound bigger so she could fl ush it out to dislodge the fragments. Harley was lucky to make a quick and full recovery.

Amazon EMAIL scam warning Action Fraud has received several reports from victims who have been sent convincing looking emails claiming to be from Amazon. The scam email claims recipients have ordered an expensive vintage chandelier. Other reported examples include: Bose stereos, iPhones and luxury watches. The emails cleverly state that if recipients haven’t authorised the transaction they can click on the help centre link to receive a full refund. The link leads to an authentic-looking website, which asks victims to confirm their name, address, and bank card information. Amazon says it will never ask for personal information to be supplied by email.

Work is forging ahead on a £2.73 million refurbishment at Bearsden’s arts, wedding and events venue Kilmardinny House. Church plot for garden Council-owned space behind a church is proving to be a popular spot for residents to enjoy the pleasures of the natural world. A group called Our Gardens of the Community has been the driving force behind the redevelopment of land, in partnership with EDC, at Bearsden Baptist Church on Roman Road.
More recently a path has been created in the woodlands and it’s hoped that there will be further work to make more paths, as well as adding new play equipment and wigwams.
The area encompasses garden, patio and woodlands and over the past few years it has been nurtured and revamped to create an attractive garden.
Now local groups, such as Maxholme playgroup and Bearsden Primary pupils are using the garden for outdoor play and learning. Bearsden Cross Church playgroup is developing a forest school thanks to the open space and an afterschool session, Come Create, on a Wednesday has started and is open to all primary-aged children.
Part of the project has included the creation of an impressive carving of a Roman Centurion from a Cedar of Lebanon tree that had died. Rachel Tainsh, of Our Gardens of the Community, says: “Iain Chalmers of Chainsaw Creations carved the eye-catching Roman soldier. There were a couple of reasons for choosing this image. The church is located on the site of a former Roman fort and verses in the Bible refer to putting on the ‘full armour of God’.”
Rachel says: “We have been delighted by how popular the garden is and people are welcome to visit every afternoon. We are looking forward to more plans as we raise funds.”

Milngavie bike mechanic Nick Green, of Hammer & Cycle, set up his mobile workshop van on the summit of the Crow Road, offering passing cyclists free coffee and bike checks
Many cyclists were surprised and delighted recently to be treated to free coffee and a quick bicycle check up on a popular local hill summit. Milngavie bike mechanic Nick Green, of Hammer & Cycle, set up his mobile workshop van on the summit of the Crow Road between Lennoxtown and Fintry one Sunday morning. “The Crow” is a staple of almost every Glasgow road cyclist's training throughout the year. It is a stiff climb on both sides, fi nishing on the bleak plateau of the Campsie hills.

In all, more than 20 cyclists stopped off. Some were from the local clubs such as Glasgow Triathlon and the Nightingales, including chairman Ronnie Newton. Others were recreational riders from as far afi eld as Stirling and Hamilton. Nick says: “As a means of promotion for the business it was by far the most personal, direct and enjoyable of all the methods we try to use. “Let's hope all those business cards that I gave out get put to good use.”

kevin to run 1,000km more A Bearsden dad who ran 1,000km in 2016 to raise more than £1,200 for charity has pledged to run the same distance again this year. Kevin Gilfi llan, 37, overcame a number of obstacles during 2016, including a knee injury and a heavy cold close to the fi nish line, to clock up exactly 1,000km over the year.
His longest single run was the Edinburgh Half Marathon, although he ran 25km in one day by completing 10k in the morning and 15k in the evening.
He said: “There was a mixture of great relief and great pride at the end of the challenge on December 28. I was relieved that I’d done it – with three days to spare – and proud that I’d stuck to my goal and been able to raise money for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.” Kevin, a Business Manager in the Operations Department at Morgan Stanley, raised a total of £1,246.08, with donations coming in from friends and colleagues in places as far away as Zurich, New York and Hong Kong. Kevin said the toughest times were when he was physically unable to run due to injury. He said: “It was hard in July when a knee injury stopped me running
Kevin’s highlights included running the Edinburgh Half Marathon, fi nishing the Glasgow Men’s 10K on Father’s Day and completing the challenge.
Kevin’s motivation came from “fear of not completing the challenge”. He says: “I’d told so many people about the challenge and I felt that if I didn’t complete it then I would have had to explain myself to them!”
Bearsden dad Kevin Gilfi llan ran 1,000km in 2016 and has pledged to the same in 2017
for three weeks. In December, so close to the end, a bad cold almost jeopardised the whole year of running.”
ELECTRICIAN
Rather than hanging up his running trainers, Kevin plans to run another 1,000km in 2017. He says: “This time, rather than thinking just about total distance, I’ve set myself a target of running two half marathons and two full marathons, and have already signed up for the inaugural Stirling Marathon in May.” See www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/kevin1000

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
