Milngavie artist Ruth Tillyard, a member of the Outdoor Painting and Sketching group sub-committee, says: “It’s a lovely idea to hold an exhibition for the members of the three local art clubs. It gives members a great focus to create art for the display. “It is likely there will be between 40 and 50 pieces of art in the exhibition. For many people, it will be the first time they have exhibited their art to the public.” There will be a range of art styles on display and for sale, including paintings, sketches and linocut prints. The latter is Ruth’s speciality. Having graduated with an art degree in her 50s, Ruth enjoys the process of creating linocuts and prints of the local landscape.

Three local arts groups are coming together this month to create an exhibition of their work that will be showcased in Glasgow.

The arts clubs are part of the University of the Third Age (U3A) organisation and are very popular among Bearsden and Milngave residents. Two of the groups meet regularly in the CE Centre in Milngavie while the other, the Outdoor

A story written by local author Leela Soma has been published as part of a special anthology to raise money for the charity War Child. The story Pavilion, which describes the contribution that Indian soldiers made to the World Wars, has been included in the book, Joe Stepped Off The Train, which was published last month. The anthology features a collection of stories on the theme of war and how it affects people and changes lives. All money raised by author royalties will go to War Child, which supports the most marginalised and vulnerable young people and children in confl ict-affect parts of the world. Leela, of Milngavie, says: “I’m both honoured and humbled to be invited to write for such a worthwhile charity project. “I urge as many people as possible to buy the book so that it can raise as much money as

GardEN ClUB HOSTS SalE Scottish natural skin care products from organic herbs to essential oils 0141 776 1218 • www.caurnie.com

SOVEREIGN BLINDS

Members of a popular local gardening club are busy preparing for their annual – and much anticipated – plant sale this month. In fact, Nancy Stevens, one of the Baldernock Gardening Club event organisers, describes activity as “feverish”. She says: “We have been holding this sale for almost 20 years and it’s the event that allows our club to be financially independent so there is a lot being done behind the scenes to make sure it is another success in 2016.” The plant sale takes place on Sunday May 15 at West of Scotland Rugby Club, Milngavie Road, Milngavie, between 2pm and 4pm.

Nancy adds: “Customers will be able to choose from a wide selection of plants, from the triedand-tested old favourites to the much more unusual – and all at good prices. “People shouldn’t worry about whether they know the geranium from the astilbe because the club members manning the plant tables will be able to advise on their suitability for your purpose.” Additionally, there will be a colourful selection of professionally grown bedding

plants and shrubs, plant supports and other willow products sold by Scottish Willow, secondhand garden miscellany from books to tools and Silver Birch from Milton of Campsie (www. silverbirchscotland.org.uk) will be selling their range of compost and bark. The tearoom will also be back by popular demand with a popular home-baking table and the rugby club’s newly refurbished bar will be open “in case anyone is in need of anything a little stronger”! Admission is free, including plenty of car parking and the plant crèche. For more information see www.baldernockgarden.org

In a new and occasional series we tell the story behind various monuments, statues, plaques and signs that you might come across when walking around the Bearsden and Milngavie area. This month, the focus is on a war memorial plaque located at Prescott Bridge, which crosses the Allander Water in Milngavie.

plaque to be installed on a bridge built by the regiment in Milngavie and later renamed after Sgt Prescott.

on the 42nd anniversary of Sgt Prescott's death. It was attended by his family and members of his regiment.

The bridge remembers Sergeant John Prescott who lost his life in the Falklands Campaign in 1982. The new plaque was installed in 2014 after the previous one was stolen by metal thieves

The original plaque was sadly stolen and when former squadmate Warrant Officer John Phillips DSC, who lost an arm in the bomb blast, heard about this he organised for a new plaque to be inscribed and attached to the bridge.

Sgt Prescott was posthumously awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal for his bravery, the only one handed out during the war.

Prescott, of Auchinleck, served as a bomb disposal expert. He was killed in action as he tried to defuse an unexploded 1,000lb bomb that struck the Royal Navy warship HMS Antelope during the war with Argentina. In his honour, comrades in the Royal Engineers paid for a bronze

He contacted members of the regiment's association who helped to raise more than £2,000 for a replacement to be created.

WO Philips told the Herald at the time of the rededication ceremony: “When we heard that the original plaque had been stolen we quickly got together and decided to do something about this.

The new plaque, made of granite, was officially dedicated during a ceremony in May 2014

"We were really pleased to be able to install a new plaque in memory of Jim.”

SaY pIYO TO a NEW ClaSS From the American creators of the popular Insanity workout comes a gentler, but no less results driven, exercise class called PiYo. Launched last year in the UK, the dynamic session that is influenced by both Pilates and yoga, has now made its way to Westerton. At the local tennis club, personal trainer and fitness instructor Brenda Glancy leads 50-minute PiYo workouts for both members and non-members on Wednesday evenings. The aim of the class, which is set to music, is to increase flexibility and lengthen and tone muscles while maintaining a sufficient pace to burn body fat. PiYo includes many set moves and holds that flow together and build up in choreographed sets. If you have attended a yoga or Pilates class, many of the movements and postures will be familiar but the sequences feel new and fairly fast flowing. I recognise warrior one and downward dog yoga poses but

the curtsy lunges and side plank flips are new to me. Each sequence or set focuses on a different area of the body and specific muscles, such as lower or upper body, core and glutes. Brenda kindly shows us easier, modified versions of the trickier exercises when we struggle and adjusts the sets to suit the level of fitness of the participants. But while this class is not the usual high impact, cardio style fitness class, such as Insanity and MetaFit, it still offers an excellent all-over-body workout. The first time I do the class I ache for days afterwards in muscles I haven’t used or stretched in a long time. The

next time, the after-effects last only two days. The third time I feel as though my body has adapted to the session. The time passes quickly in a PiYo class and Brenda's instruction is clear, specific and done with a smile on her face. PiYo is at Westerton Tennis Club at 7.30pm on Wednesdays. See www. westertontennis. org.uk and Westerton Tennis Club on Facebook.

Avalon also posted a notice on Facebook about Gizmo and thanks to sharing Gizmo was reunited with his owner.

cHipping alerT Avalon Vets in Milngavie has chosen Gizmo the cat as their pet of the month. Gizmo was 16 weeks old when he was brought into the surgery as a stray. The vets scanned the cat to see if he had a microchip but he hadn’t been chipped and so he was taken to local cat charity, Catflap.

Highly skilled, friendly and professionally qualiďŹ ed (highest in the UK)

However, Avalon believe this is a poignant case. One of the nurses said: “If Gizmo had been chipped it would have been far easier to trace the owner. As of April 6, 2016, all dogs in the UK must be microchipped and registered to an official organisation.

because they appear to show little or no clinical symptoms.

“While it is not also mandatory for cats, they are notorious wanderers and a microchip means they can be quickly identified and reunited with their owner if they go missing.

Glenbrae Vets advises that there are some signs that pet owners should look out for including, breathlessness, tired pets, coughing, faster breathing, inactivity and collapse.

Avalon offers microchipping for pets.

However, the best indicator of heart issues in pets is through clinical examination. Angela, of Glenbrae, says: “There are several ways we can properly check the health of a pet’s heart through a variety of tests and if you are in any doubt about your pet’s health you should contact your vet.

HealTHy HearTS We all know about keeping our hearts healthy but what about our pets? Sadly, cardiac disease is common in pets and many heart conditions can go unnoticed

Big band fun for all Milngavie Precinct is set to swing to the fabulous sounds of the 20-strong Metro Big Band as it visits Scotland from America. Acclaimed for its passionate and exciting music, from Jazz, Swing and Motown to Blues, Rock and Pop styles, Metro Big Band will play the precinct on Saturday June 4 from 1pm onwards. Milngavie Town Centre BID is behind the band’s town date. Co-coordinator Ania Surma, says: “We are thrilled that Metro Big Band will stop off in Milngavie during its summer tour of Scotland. “This is a great opportunity for anyone who likes music and dancing to come along for this live, open-air show. It will be a great event for all.”

Metro Big Band features musicians, including saxophone, trombone, trumpets and rhythm, and vocalists from across America. Their sounds consist of strong soloists and solid ensemble playing to offer a hugely entertaining experience. One reviewer has said of the band: “Playing the extremes, from luscious ballads to full sounding shout choruses to delicate shuffle music, the band captures the audience and takes

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

A carers’ support organisation wants to hear from entertainment acts that could help with an upcoming community concert. Carers Link East Dunbartonshire is organising a Carers Community Concert in June as part of Carers Week. The concert will be free for unpaid carers to attend but the organisation needs acts to perform. Amrit Kaur Bedi, a Community Support Coordinator, says: “Carers week celebrates the hard work that unpaid carers do in supporting a family member or friend. “We want to put on a community concert for the benefit of carers and we are looking for a mixture of different acts to perform, from primary school groups to opera singers.

“If any readers of the magazine would like to get in touch to perform that would be fabulous.” Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring and to highlight the challenges that carers face. It also recognises the contribution that carers make to families and communities throughout the UK. Last year, Carers Link East Dunbartonshire hosted a successful Summer Picnic. The Community Concert will take place on June 9 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at Eagle Lodge, Bishopbriggs. To offer support email Amrit@ carerslink.org.uk and see www. carerslink.org.uk

You can rest assured it’s the same for everyone because in Scotland the winter weather does not create an attractive – or agreeable – environment for maintaining your property. Now, however, with the warmer weather, longer days and the chance of drier conditions, it’s important to get on top of that list of things to do.

Baldernock Gardening Club

2-4pm

It’s at this time of the year, when the sun comes out, that you suddenly notice all the things that need to be done to your home and garden

Start by taking a critical eye over the inside and outside of your house. Look for leaks, cracks, rough paintwork, drainage issues and general wear and tear. Take a note of any jobs that require a professional and another list of those that you can tackle yourself. It’s worth considering how much time it would take you to do a

job compared to a trusted expert, who will be skilled in the task and also have the right tools. While it can seem like a big outlay to get the experts in, in fact it is likely to save your own precious time and give a far better and longlasting finish. Projects that are ideal for the summer months include decorating inside and outside. While some people enjoy decorating for a better finish and improved safety – for example where walls are double height or the outside of a two-storey home

THAN NEVER... – it’s worth calling in professional decorators.

After a winter of bad weather, your roof should be check over. Re-roofi ng or roofi ng repairs are best done when drier weather is more likely. Gutters should also be cleared of leaves and you should pay attention to any places where water outflows, or goes into a drain, to ensure there are no leaks. Cold and icy weather can lead to cracks in gutters and pipes, especially if they are not the modern plastic style.

The outside of a home needs to be maintained to ensure it keeps out the wind and rain. If in doubt, ask a builder or plastering company to take a look at your property. When enquiring about work to your home make sure you seek at least two or three quotes for any suggested work. You can ask friends and family for recommendations, too.

Your garden will also require attention. Winter plays havoc with trees and plants and the grass will need to be cut regularly.

You could enlist the regular help of a gardener. To make you garden easier to manage or more attractive, why not consult a landscaping company? They will know all the tips and tricks for creating a beautiful outdoors space that is easier to look after.

If you ensure that your home, inside and out, and garden are well-maintained you will enjoy them in the longer term without need for costlier emergency repairs and professional assistance.

Public funding is available through the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) for individuals to receive legal advice and assistance or representation on a variety of civil and criminal matters concerning Scots law. Legal Aid is available to individuals over the age of sixteen and also those under sixteen years of age who are deemed to understand the legal scenario in question and able to provide legal instructions to a solicitor. There are, of course, restrictions to financial eligibility. These depend on any savings you may have and also your weekly disposable income. There are certain state benefits which will automatically qualify the applicant for Legal Aid. According to SLAB, 75% of Scottish adults would qualify for civil legal aid. It may be that this would be with a contribution. However, that contribution is usually paid by way of monthly instalments and ensures that access to legal advice is affordable to those who require it. We would advise that it is always worth asking your solicitor for further advice regarding your own particular set of circumstances and whether you would qualify for Legal Aid.

Business Sparks | May 2016

BUSINESS SparkS: three sisters Bake Renfrewshire.” While the sisters from Bridge of Weir all worked part-time in food and hospitality while still at school and at university, when they graduated they set out to pursue their own careers. Gillian went into PR and marketing, Nichola worked in the pharmaceutical industry and the youngest Linsey studied English at university.

The Three Sisters Bake café, located 15 minutes from Killearn, really is the creation of three sisters, Gillian, Nichola and Linsey Reith. “People always want to know if that’s the case or if it’s just a name,” says the eldest of the siblings, Gillian Reith. “But it’s

true. There are three of us and we all own the café, as well as the original Three Sisters Bake at Quarriers Village in

Then, one by one, each returned to working in hospitality. Linsey trained as a pastry chef, while Nichola’s cake baking passion became a wedding cakes and cup cakes business. Gillian left PR to work front of house at Cafézique in Glasgow. The idea for the Three Sisters Bake café came after a few bottles of wine 10 years ago. Gillian says: “It occurred to us we could make a successful catering business from all of our skills. We

all love food and hospitality and it made sense. It took five years for this to come to fruition but in 2011 we opened in Quarriers and 18 months ago came Killearn.”

We all love food and hospitality and it made sense. While the sisters have stepped back from the day-to-day operation of the two cafes they offer in-house training to their staff. It’s important to the sisters that they have the right staff to look after their cafes. They also run an events catering branch of the business. The Three Sisters Bake café in Killearn has recently launched a Seasonal Hero menu. See threesistersbake.co.uk

This month: NEVER TOO OLD TO CARE! A caregiver from Milngavie has just celebrated her 73rd birthday, proving that you’re never too old to care. Cathy joined, Home Instead Senior Care 2 years ago and is proof positive that older caregivers can bring something very special to our lovely clients.

Cathy epitomises the very essence of exceptional caring, bringing to each and every relationship her natural empathy and with the ability to share many of her life’s experiences.

Home Instead have long believed that the over 50s offer a largely untapped and highly effective care resource and Cathy is testament to this belief. Many of our clients would like to be cared for by someone closer to their own age. It’s why we already employ many people who are over 50.

Cathy, said “I love working with Home Instead and I relish my special times with all of the clients I care for. Fortunately my outlook on life and good health allows me to care for those people who are

Get the best care for your ears... Husband and wife team Greg and Val Clements of Clements Earcare Services tell us about about their fantastic business. reg Clements launched the practice in partnership with his wife, Val, in 1996. At the time he had been working for a large national hearing aid retailer and was motivated by the strong belief that he could do a better job for the clientele as an independent practitioner. Some twenty years on he is not shaken in this belief which was recently vindicated by the results of a Which report concerning hearing care provision, wherein the independent sector (often small service providers such as ourselves) outperformed both the NHS and all the large national chains. This report is readily available online or in the Which magazine and you can read more about it on our blog. al Clements has been involved in the practice since its inception in 1996 and is a now co director with Greg. Self effacingly, she is often heard to say that she is not the "technical one" and in so doing she is deferring to Greg. This is not at all a true

reflection of her abilities and she is a frequent and keen co-participant (with Greg) at educational events and seminars, Recently notable were her attendances at the Unitron professional development events in Vienna and at the Unite University in Manchester, with specific interest in a seminar on small business branding. The most important thing to Greg and Val is good customer service and it must remain personal. In this respect they believe they have a competitive advantage over some of their larger rivals. It's only Val and Greg so you will only ever be dealing with either or both of us. You get to know them and they get to know you.

Organisers of a local appeal for aid rucksacks to send to refugee children from Syria have been overwhelmed by the response from the public. Art at The Grange, Art School and Gallery in Milngavie launched a Mini Rucksack Project after being inspired by the nationwide Rucksack Project. Over one week in April, people from Milngavie, Bearsden and much further afield handed in 120 bags of clothes, shoes and toiletries. A team at Art at The Grange then loaded the rucksacks into a van kindly loaned by Ferrymill Motors in nearby Torrance. The next stop for the bags was the Scottish Refugee Council, which has been helping refugees for more than 60 years, and who gave thanks to Art at the Grange. A spokesperson said: “Many refugees have lost everything

and their lives will never return to normal. We thank Art at The Grange for offering a helping hand. The bags were then taken to Maslows Community Shop in Govan, Glasgow. Refugees are referred to Maslows from agencies such as Migrant Help and Red Cross and turn up with just the clothes they are wearing and often wearing flipflops.

Many refugees have lost everything and their lives will never return to normal... Sharon McCahill, who owns Art at The Grange, said she has been “absolutely overwhelmed by the response to their appeal. She said: “Every time I opened the door it seemed that there was another mini rucksack. This has been an uplifting experience. If you have been inspired to help further, Maslows Community Shop is on Shaw Street in Govan and open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. NEW ACTION SPORTS store Comes to Clydebank At Scotland’s biggest action sports store, Librance, which has newly opened in Clydebank, teenager Jenny Atkinson has her first try of a Hoverboard. Already a Swegway fan, the 14-year-old from Helensburgh has heard great things about the one-wheeled Hoverboards and persuaded her mum to take her to the large showroom. Jenny is impressed by the store and also the Hoverboard. She says: “There is so much to see and try in Librance, including the Hoverboard, and also Swegways, skateboards, stunt scooters and Heelys.

FUN SPORTS: Jenny Atkinson tries one of the new hoverboards in stock at Librance in Clydebank

Jenny enjoyed her trial of the Hoverboard, which is like a onewheeled Swegway and the latest must-have action sports gadget.

“I really like the cool lay-out of the shop, too, and the amount of floor space. I felt like the staff were friendly and relaxed yet they know lots about their products.”

She says: “The Hoverboard was quite tricky to do at the start but

felt brilliant once I got the hang of it. I like my Swegway and now I’d really like a Hoverboard to go out on with friends in the summer.” Mum Debbie, who reminds Jenny she’ll need to save up for her own Hoverboard, said she felt reassured by Librance about the safety of the products. She says: “I was worried about the likes of Swegways and Hoverboards but I felt like the staff put safety first. “They told me that their products had all passed stringent tests – more so than others on the market – and this gave me confidence about letting Jenny use them.” Librance is the partner store of another in Edinburgh. It has recently moved from Xscape Braehead to Unit 14, Clydebank Business Park in South Avenue. It’s open from 10am to 6pm daily. They sell brands such as Evolution, Speedstar, Arbor, Penny, Sacrifice, MGP and many more. See www.librance.com or pop in to find out more.
