HIGH STREET IS BEST ON MAINLAND
Milngavie has won a podium accolade in a prestigious competition to highlight Scotland’s Most Beautiful High Street. The town took third place in the contest run jointly by Scotland’s Towns Partnership, the national body for towns in Scotland, and Keep Scotland Beautiful, the environmental charity which campaigns to keep Scotland green, clean and sustainable. And Milngavie’s High Street can now claim to be the most beautiful in mainland Scotland. Votes were cast on-line and Milngavie won 15% of those cast. Kirkwall, in Orkney, came first with 21% of the votes, while
Lerwick in Shetland was runner up with 18% of the votes. The other shortlisted towns included Ayr, Innerleithen, Linlithgow, Lanark and Rothesay. Graeme Ross, the chair of Milngavie BID, said: “We are delighted that Milngavie has been highlighted as having one of the top three most beautiful high streets in Scotland – and the best one on the mainland." Graeme also visited Orkney recently and added: “Kirkwall is a vibrant and interesting place
to visit, and not what you would expect from a trip to the Scottish islands. “On behalf of Milngavie, we would like to offer our congratulations to Kirkwall and all participants. The competition demonstrates the strength of our towns in Scotland, that we all must build on for future generations.” Chief Officer of Scotland’s Towns Partnership, Phil Prentice, said that the competition recognises the work and effort of local people to make their high streets the best they can be. He added: “It’s not just an award for a high street, it’s an award for
the people who occupy it. “I’ve seen first hand just some of the innovation and forward thinking used and it is a real demonstration of what can be achieved with creativity and determination. “I want to warmly congratulate all of the worthy towns who were shortlisted.” Katie Murray, Communities and Place Manager at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “Every participant in the competition deserves recognition for the benefits that they are delivering across Scotland - helping everyone to enjoy cleaner, greener and more beautiful communities.”

GREEN SHOOTS AT STATION Milngavie Railway Station has been given a revamp thanks to the hard work of a greenfingered teenage apprentice. Christopher Donnelly, 17, is a Modern Apprentice with East Dunbartonshire Council’s Streetscene Environmental team. At the start of the summer he was tasked with making improvements to the planted area around the railway station. In addition to planting new shrubs, Christopher cleared the wooded area of debris and put fresh soil down, which was sown with woodland wild flower mix. Bins were replaced with larger capacity ones and the area was cleaned and tidied with bark chips put down in the planted
Billy Hendry, Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “The results of Christopher’s hard work are obvious for all to see. The area is much improved and I’m sure the attractive layout will be appreciated by locals and visitors alike to the Milngavie Travel Hub. “The planning which has gone into his design will ensure that

the area will continue to look good for many years to come.” Christopher started his apprenticeship in August 2018 with EDC at Langfaulds Cemetery in Bearsden and attends Daldowie Training Centre two days a week. He said: “I applied for this apprenticeship when still at school as I felt strongly that I wanted to get out and work in a job like this. “This project was to revamp the area and make it welcoming and eye-catching as it is where tourists start their journey on the famous West Highland Way. “I have really enjoyed doing this and watching the plants bloom and develop.”

A new walking and cycling map covering East Dunbartonshire has been launched to guide residents and visitors to local gems.
Some 6000 maps have been printed by the Council with support from the Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme.
In addition, the map includes tips on safety checks before setting out, details of cycle parking and local walking groups, the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and contacts for useful organisations. It also makes it easier for people to plan everyday journeys, whether you’re travelling to work, shops, leisure centres, Community Hubs, libraries, cultural venues or accessing local facilities.
The aim is to encourage residents and visitors to be more active, whether for work or pleasure, and to improve their health and fitness.
You can pick up the maps at Community Hubs, libraries, cycle shops, community centres and leisure centres, as well as local establishments, such as
The new-look fold-out map details 17 routes of varying distances – many are family friendly – as well as key buildings and places to visit, such as Roman remains; the Auld Wives’ Lifts at Craigmaddie Muir, near Milngavie; Mugdock Country Park; and Lenzie Moss.

Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said: “The previous East Dunbartonshire Cycle Map was incredibly successful, with 8000 copies distributed since April 2018. "The new-look Walking & Cycling Map incorporates a range of useful feedback from people across our communities. It really is an invaluable resource and will help people to go places, whether they live locally or they are visiting." The next phase of the project will include accompanying signage along the local routes.

CHURCH PROJECT FOR TEENS Rejuvenate in Milngavie, founded by Gordon Thomson (inset), offers teenagers a 'safe haven' with activities, fun and friendship
£38
Howel Jones, a member of the church, said: “I think it’s an excellent idea to make provision of a ‘safe haven’ with positive ingredients for young people, such as friendship and communication, and even counselling. “It addresses the needs of two sets of people. Firstly, the many concerned parents of teenage youngsters and, secondly, for the young people themselves in providing a context to share their anxieties.

Rejuvenate in Milngavie is a venture founded by church worker Gordon Thomson. It is aimed at teenage children and those at secondary school age – and will offer an opportunity for fun activities, talks, food and friendship. Gordon was a troubled youth before becoming a Baptist minister in Drumchapel for 15 years. He has since branched out to become a freelance worker linked to local churches.
He said: “I know from personal experience what it is like to be affected by confusion and surrounded by unhelpful influences. Having found help from God, I want to be able to share that message of hope with the next generations.” The project is being hosted at Allander Evangelical Church, Douglas Street, Milngavie, on the last Saturday of each month from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
“This is all so important in the current climate of concern over mental health and corrupting cultures. “While it is essentially Gordon’s initiative, he has the full backing of those of us in the churches that support and make use of his work” It’s hoped that the monthly sessions will be developed and extended in the future to become more frequent. For further information call Gordon Thomson at 07871 497061.

Sister and brother Erin and Brodie Burnett took third places in their respective age groups, the female Tristar 1 (age nine to 10) and the male Tristarts (age eight) in the Triathlon Scotland You Can Sport Ranking Series 2019 Youth Triathlon Series. Talia Padmanabhan was second in the female Tristarts, while Fraser Donaldson was third in the Tristar 2s (age 11-12). They each competed in three junior triathlon events across Scotland, scored points for their finish places. At the end of the season the points are added up to give the series rankings.

Brodie added: "I'm so happy that I came third. The racing is hard, but it is good fun too.”
The children are regular members at the busy junior section of Glasgow Triathlon Club.
Glasgow Triathlon Club also did well in the rankings. Both the adult and youth sections of the club won second place in the Scottish large clubs awards. Several other GTC members took podium places in the rankings as well.
Erin said: "I really enjoy racing and I feel great when I win. I'm so pleased that I came third in this series in my first year of racing.”
The You Can Sport Ranking Series recognises and rewards consistent participation in various events throughout the 2019 season.

Members gain points while competing in You Can Sport Ranking Series events and these points lead to overall and/or age group prizes. A combined Triathlon Scotland annual awards and You Can Sport Ranking Series awards ceremony took place in Dunfermline in Fife in November. Players of Milngavie FC's 2009s showing off their new strips, courtesy of The Bathroom Company Glasgow
A generous Milngavie business couple has signed a deal to sponsor a young team at a popular local football club. Jennifer and Richard Bremner, who own The Bathroom Company Glasgow, are sponsoring the “2009s” team at Milngavie FC. They have provided new strips for the 29 players, who form three seven-a-side teams.
“Primary school boys grow fast and with our previous strips being well over two years old there were a few tight and torn strips among the players.
“It’s such a great local club and we know that they need the support of volunteers and local people to keep doing their great work.”
Jennifer said: “We wanted to do something for the local community and we decided to support a team of youngsters at Milngavie Football Club.
The Bathroom Company Glasgow, which is based in Hillington, offers bathroom design, fitting and installations, as well as plumbing, joinery and tiling work, to ensure all works are completed on time and to the highest standard.
“Two of our own children, sevenyear-old Claudia and five-year-old Sasha, also play at the club so we know lots of the parents there.
Alan Chambers, one of the coaches at Milngavie FC, said: “The sponsorship of the 2009s players means a great deal to us.
Abbie Bathrooms
The smile on the faces of the boys when they saw their new strips was a great sight.
“The only issue we have is getting the boys to save their kit for the games rather than wearing it at training, but that is a nice problem to have. “We can't thank the Bathroom Company enough as it was a substantial financial outlay to kit out the 29 players.” See www.thebathroomcompany glasgow.com and Milngavie Football Club on Facebook.

A kind-hearted Bearsden yoga teacher organised a festive foodbank collection. Last month, Claire Marwaha led two classes on a Wednesday evening without charge to participants. She also asked her yogis at The Wee Yoga Hut to donate food items and bags of products to her charity cause. The food collections were handed to the Drumchapel Foodbank. In November, a Facebook message pleaded: “We are in desperate need of toy donations and cash donations to see us through the Christmas period. “This is the first year since we opened that we have seen a significant lack of donations at this time of year.”
Claire said: “When I spotted that Drumchapel Foodbank was in need of items over the Christmas period, I decided I wanted to do something to help.
The team, comprising Raj Bhaumik and Eoghan Connolly, who are in fourth year at the Milngavie secondary school, won the Scottish final of the English Speaking Union's Junior Debating Championship.
“The people who come to my classes were really generous and I am pleased we could all make a difference to the lives of people who have a lot less than we do.”
Eoghan and Raj successfully argued that candidates in elections should stand as independents and that political parties should be banned.
Drumchapel Foodbank is a community organisation run by KCEDG in partnership with Drumchapel L.I.F.E working to support people facing financial crisis.
They beat stiff opposition from St Columba’s in Kilmacolm, Mearns Castle High School and Broxburn Academy in the final.

BOUNCE BACK TO NETBALL

“Then, a few mums said how much they also enjoyed netball at primary and they asked if I would start an adult group. We are still going strong today.

“Some faces have changed but we do have a core group that have been coming for many years.”
A Bearsden netball player is keen to welcome new people to join a weekly session that is “all about having fun while getting fit”. Tamara Kennedy organises the Bounce Back to Netball group at the Donald Dewar Sports Centre in Drumchapel at 8pm on Wednesdays. She said: “We are a bunch of ladies, plus an occasional male, of all ages and abilities and we play for about an hour. The aim is to have fun while we get fit and I’d liken it to the equivalent of friendly five-aside football.”
Tamara launched the group some seven years ago after setting up another netball club at her daughter’s primary school. She said: “I really wanted my daughter to have a taste of playing netball because I used to love it at primary level and it was the only time I got picked to play for a school team. At secondary level it can become quite competitive.
NEED IT DONE RIGHT?
No experience is necessary to join the sessions although players must be aged over 16. Tamara says: “We play according to the netball rules, but we don’t blow the whistle for every fault during the training. We really just want to have fun and play a slightly competitive game – but we do not keep score. “We occasionally take part in friendly games against other teams and we usually participate in the Bounce Back to Netball Christmas and summer festivals. “But there is no pressure and competition is a secondary element. We would love to see more people come along to join our weekly sessions.” Each session costs £5 and there is an annual Bounce Back Netball Scotland registration fee of £10. See “Bounce Back to Netball – Bearsden” on Facebook.

MUM BAGS FIREWORKS DEBRIS
SIX TO JOIN GB ORCHESTRA in and performing in the Royal Albert Hall in London.” The NYOGB comprises the best young players from across Britain. The pupils from Douglas Academy are Mari MacGregor (cello); Raj Bhaumik (clarinet/principal bass clarinet); Libby Hunter (French horn); Erin Black (piano); Louisa Buchan (clarinet); and Chun Yi Kang (violin).
A Milngavie woman was so annoyed to see the debris of used fireworks in the local countryside that she returned to collect it. Alison Paterson, a mum and primary school teacher, spotted the pile of rubbish while she was enjoying a run with friends in November in the Campsie Fells. The debris was left in a layby on the Crow Road and was enough to fill three bin bags. Alison said: “It annoyed me that this fireworks rubbish was left. I returned the next day with bin bags and filled three of them.” There has been a growing campaign in recent years for the Government to ban fireworks for public sale.
Six pupils from Douglas Academy have been selected to join the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain
A local secondary school is thrilled that six young musicians have been picked to join a prestigious national orchestra. Douglas Academy reports that it is the largest number to be chosen for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYOGB) in one year from the Music School at Douglas Acadmey. Mark Evans, who is Music School course director, said: “Six of our pupils have been offered places
in the NYOGB. This is incredibly significant for us and is by far the highest proportion of Music School who have been awarded places in the same year. “It is a great opportunity for the players who will have the chance to play in some of the best concert halls in Britain, including taking part in the BBC Proms
As well as the NYOGB success, two of the musicians, Raj Bhaumik and Chun Yi Kang, have won through to the second round of the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2019 competition. The Grand Final will be held in May 2020 in Manchester, where finalists will have the opportunity to perform a concerto of their choice with the BBC Philharmonic. The Music School of Douglas Academy was established in 1979 as a national centre of excellence. The school provides tuition for secondary school pupils in a suite of specialist rooms. Applications for entry are received from throughout Scotland and further afield. See www.douglas.e-dunbarton. sch.uk/school-info/music-school.

NEW FORMAT TRAIL RACES A popular trail running series is launching with a new format and new races this year. The Solstice Trail Series 2020 will include Saturday races and there will be a choice of three distances over three consecutive months. The new races, which all play out at Mugdock Country Park, include a 5km, 10km and 15km race. The first three races are on Saturday April 18, the next three will be on Saturday May 16 and the final three will be on Saturday June 13. Ryan Scott, the founder of the Solstice trail Series, said: “We have kept popular elements of the original series format, such as evening start times to make the most of the light and different race routes across the
series, so you will never run the same route twice. “However, we hope the new Saturday dates will enable runners from further afield to reach the start line on time.” Runners can enter individual races or receive a discount for entering the full series. Ryan added: “The Solstice Trail Series is a celebration of trail running, so people can expect a warm welcome, a great race atmosphere and our awesome race marshals.” See trailfestscotland. com/races. com/races
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: BEST FOOT FORWARD… Physical inactivity is the greatest public health challenge facing the Western world. A British Medical Journal editorial recently argued that doctors should be more active in trying to address any limiting factors to exercise. One such condition is plantar fasciitis. Plantar fascia is a band of connective tissue connecting the heel to the small bones near the toes. Repeated “microtrauma” caused by pulling of the fascia from the base of the heel causes pain from the heel to the sole, limiting walking or running. It tends to affect people as they get older, but people who work on flat surfaces are more
commonly affected. It is easy to diagnose, with localised tenderness on the base of the heel. For the most part, doctors often reassure patients, as it will often settle after 12-18 months. However there are some treatments thought to help. These include biomechanical measures such as splints or shoe modifications by Podiatrists, steroid injections, shock wave treatment and occasionally surgery. Unfortunately none of these treatments are especially successful, but even if they help a little, we are encouraged to consider them. So don’t let foot pain stop you exercising – try to get it sorted and put your best foot forward!

group is to introduce all runners to different types of training sessions, such as Fartlek, tempo and intervals.
Fiona said: “The goal for the first training programme was to take part in a parkrun. For some of the runners, it was their first 5k, while for others the Drumchapel event was a chance to achieve a personal best.

NEW YEAR Just like every other January, many of us will make a New Year’s resolution, or two. But while research shows that in the first few weeks, more than three-quarters of us will stick to the pledges, within a couple of months most will then give up. In fact, one study found that fewer than eight per cent of people ever accomplish their self-imposed goal. According to the experts, our resolutions are too difficult to keep for a number of reasons. Many people are over-ambitious with their targets, aiming, for example, to lose too much weight too soon.

Make it specific Set a specific target, rather than, “I’ll give it my best” target. So you could plan to save £1000 in a bank account or lose a stone in weight. Perhaps you will aim to run a 10k or a marathon, or learn how to dance the salsa.

No experience is required, just bring your enthusiasm and comfy shoes!

As a suggestion, you could plan to save £100 per month to reach a target of £1200 over a year. Losing 2lbs per month will give you an overall loss of a stone in seven months.
Alternatively, how about planning a target of attending a weekly dance, yoga or Pilates session, or going along to a full term of language classes?
Reality check Be critical of your resolution and ask yourself whether it is achievable, or unrealistic? Is it possible for you to save a sum of £100 per month, or would £50 be more achievable? Is a weight loss of 1lb per month more realistic than 2lbs? Would you be more sensible aiming for a 5k running goal, rather than a marathon? And if you want to take up a new hobby, do you have the time and money to do so?

Fortunately, there are many triedand-tested tips for success with your New Year’s resolutions in 2020.
Others set potentially unsustainable Make it measurable goals, such as to give up all sugar for the rest of their lives. There should be a plan for measuring a goal, or checking your progression, otherwise you will lose heart with your resolution.

FITNESS THAT'S
Ensure you are driven to achieve a target, or the aim excites you enough to want to continue.
Make it accountable
If you want to save money, you could save towards a holiday. If you want to lose weight, pick a new outfit in a smaller size that you can progress towards being able to wear for a special event.
As soon as you tell someone else about your resolution, it makes it more accountable.
It is a good idea to write down your plan and record each smaller achievement as you progress, too.
Having someone encouraging you to become slimmer, tone up, save money or learn new skills
Seeing your goals met throughout 2020 will give you the motivation to continue.

BREWERY AND BAR OPENS
Legal Matters
An award-winning craft brewery has launched its first bar in Milngavie.
with Julie Millen from Millen Solicitors
Jaw Brew is located at Crossveggate, next to Milngavie train station, and serves locally sourced drinks, including the brand’s own craft beer and gin. It is also one of Scotland’s smallest bars with capacity for just 28 customers. The company’s brewery will also move to Milngavie this month to become East Dunbartonshire’s first micro-brewery.
This month: PROTECTIVE ORDERS Jaw Brew founder, Mark Hazell, said: “When the premises became available in Milngavie it was an ideal opportunity to bring the Jaw Brew brewery to the area and open our first permanent bar. See www.jawbrew.co.uk

Financial pressures, family disputes and the excesses of the festive season, can all increase the instances of domestic abuse. The long standing effects of domestic abuse on adults, both male and female, and children is well known. A raft of Protective Orders can be granted at the Sheriff Court including Exclusion Orders (whereby one party is required to move from the family home), Interdicts prohibiting unlawful conduct, and Powers of Arrest. These orders can be obtained by way of emergency applications within very short timescales, and are invaluable in achieving, quickly, the removal of immediate threat.

to address issues directly to local councillors. We are fortunate because several of our councilors are diligent in attending the regular meetings.” Fergus believes that as well as the commonly debated issues of the roads, traffic calming, cycle lanes, the green belt and the repair of pavements, January’s meeting is likely to focus, too, on the outcome of the General Election and the consultation of plans for the new Allander Leisure Centre, as well as the Boclair Academy rebuild and potential changes to the school catchments.
The Bearsden East Community Council meets up at the Pagoda Building in King George V Park this month

Bearsden East Community Council will meet at The Pagoda Building, King George V Park, Bearsden, on Wednesday January 8 at 7.30pm. January 2020 | Senior Savvy
PLANS UNVEILED FOR SPORTS CENTRE Senior Savvy Plans are now available with Suhail Rehman
for a redeveloped Allander Leisure Centre facility in Bearsden.
FIVE TIPS TO HELP SENIORS
This month: MANAGE HOLIDAY STRESS
The site is set to be revamped to create a state-of-the-art sports and leisure facility – and also provide facilities for adults with learning disabilities. While a series of drop-in exhibition events have already taken place, local people should be aware they can see information about proposals on the East Dunbartonshire Council website. Meetings have taken place with Allander Champions Group and community councils, with further engagement proposed with Allander users, residents' associations and local schools. The Allander project includes proposals for a larger swimming pool, games hall, gym, café and changing facilities, as well as improved football and tennis facilities. It’s hoped there will be services to support adults with a learning disability within the centre,
Holidays – Stressfull? Travel, family, guests, shopping... For seniors holidays can bring additional stress, from uprooted routines to seasonal depression. Here are five holiday tips to keep seniors' stress to a minimum.
which will be re-provisioned from Kelvinbank Resource Centre. Not everyone in the community has been happy about the new plans. For example, members of Allander Indoor Bowling Club voiced their concerns because there were no plans for bowling facilities. Councillor Andrew Polson, Joint Council Leader, said: “A redeveloped Allander facility has been a long-cherished dream. It has been a complex process to try to balance views and requests, while ensuring value for money.” See www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk.
1 SET REALISTIC GOALS Travelling and meeting people all day can be physically and mentally exhausting. Schedule ample travel and rest time throughout the day. 2 KEEP SET SCHEDULES Waking/Sleeping/ eating at a certain time, most seniors have a set pattern of doing things – prevent unnecessary stress, check their patterns before planning events. 3 MINIMISE EXPENSE Remember many seniors are on a fixed income. Travel,
gifts, foods can burden the bank account. Have realistic budgets and stick to it. 4 PLAN APPROPRIATE ACTIVITIES A Senior who has difficulty walking or standing may not suit a 6 hour shopping trip. Choose suitable activities and provide wheelchairs. 5 KEEP FAMILY OR FRIENDS AROUND Along with fun, sadness may come to seniors, especially those who lost a loved one, avoid isolation; keep active with local church groups or social organisations.

Other strong competitors expected to race for a win include Fionnuala Ross, of Shettleston Harriers, who set two course records in the Babcock 10k series in 2019, and Elspeth Curran, from Kilbarchan, who enjoyed three top three finishes last year. FAST AND FUN WAY TO GET FIT NEW SINGERS
FOR CHOIR
Like most people, our editor Fiona Russell is timepoor but she still wants to get fit. She has been attending a local fitness studio. Based in Bearsden, X1Fitness offers High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts that last only 30 to 45 minutes but offer a highly effective cardiovascular and strengthening session. Carrie Hunter is the energetic and enthusiastic instructor at X1Fitness, which has a programme of boxing or spin bike-based sessions throughout the week. She says: “Each session that I offer, whether it is on a spin bike or with gloves on, is carefully planned so that participants get a total body workout. We target all major muscles during each session but the
workouts don’t get boring because I regularly switch them up. “Good music is also a key part of helping people to get into the right zone so they can forget the rest of the world for a while and push harder to achieve greater results.” I have become a regular after a free try-out session of the HIIT 45 Bootcamp. The Friday morning class is well attended and includes a mix of boxing with pads and a punch bag, as well as other circuits exercises that challenge a range of muscles. The class is fast, fun and a great way to gain an all-round strength
and conditioning workout. The format is different each week, which keeps me motivated and interested. I also enjoy de-stressing by punching the bag hard. Another class is the 45-minute Psychore, which is based on what’s known as “rhythm riding”. Carrie says: “In this session you ride to the beat with sprints, climbs and endurance, as well as movements that activate the core and glutes.” "It is a low-impact workout, so it’s kinder on the joints, and the session is rounded off with a core work out. I've also found it to be an enjoyable and fast moving class once I got the hang of the fast music beat." To find out more see www.facebook.com/xOneFitness.
New members are welcome at a popular community choir in Bearsden. The Kelvin Choir does not require an audition to join and they are always happy for new singers to join their ranks. All they ask is that members commit to attending rehearsals on a regular basis and perform in their concerts whenever possible. Rehearsals take place on Tuesdays, from 7.30pm to 9.45pm at Upper Hall, St Andrew’s Church. Choir members practice for two concerts each year, one in May and another each December. There is an annual membership fee of £80. To find out more see www.kelvinchoir.com

The temptation to spend your days off under your duvet may never be quite as strong as in January, however lazy days in bed will leave you feeling even more lethargic. Instead try and establish a regular sleeping pattern of seven to eight hours per night and by February you’ll be jumping out of bed in the mornings.
