bit fi tter and to raise money for charity. I started with running events and did 10 solo or relay running events. “In 2015, I did another seven running races including my goal race, the Edinburgh marathon. “That year I also rode with my dad Ken Grigor from the Beatson in Glasgow to Skye. The ‘Aim for Skye’ ride was hard work in wet and windy conditions but it raised an amazing £3,000. “Last year I did a mix of seven sports events including several novice triathlons. This year I’ve stepped it up a bit and have been doing sprint distance triathlons. “Like me, my husband Paul and our children are members of Glasgow Triathlon Club and we really enjoy doing the races together. “All the events have helped me to become fi tter over the years and to raise much needed funds for two worthwhile charities. The restaurant and pub, which opened last year in the precinct at 44 Main Street, already hosts a monthly Gin Club evening. The club evenings, on the last Tuesday of each month, have proved to be so popular that co-owner Billy Milligan believes there is an appetite for an annual Finsbay Gin festival.
He says: “There is amazing demand for gin at the Finsbay and the club nights usually sell out. We’ve decided to launch a Finsbay Gin Festival and we hope it will continue annually.” The first gin festival will take place on July 21 and 22. There will be more than 50 gins at the event and host of gin masters,
Numbers will be capped for the first festival on a first-comefirst-served free ticketed basis. See the Finsbay website and on Facebook to keep up to date with ticket availability. You can also email info@finsbay.com. The event will be held in the newly revamped lane, including a mural by local artist Kirsten Thomson, next to the pub and will include music and a BBQ. kirsten’s mUral marvel A young artist has spent more than three weeks creating a stunning wall mural in a lane at the edge of Milngavie precinct.
Kirsten says: “The aim was to create something that would be eye catching but also be poignant to the town. So I’ve included the famous Bennie Railplane, Douglas House, which was the old cinema, Glengoyne Distillery, West of Scotland Rugby Club and the West Highland Way.
Kirsten Thomson, 22, of Bearsden had planned to use spray paints for the unique artwork and she had imagined the project would take her around fi ve days. However, a strong breeze running through the lane off Main Street, at the side of restaurant and bar Finsbay, meant she had to resort to painting the mural by hand.
“In fact, the hope is that many walkers of the West Highland Way will come to this point to have their photo taken before starting or after fi nishing the long-distance walking trail. The mural is part of a project by Finsbay to revamp the lane. With help from the Council’s Stalled Spaces and Milngavie BID, the aim is to create a place where people can sit and enjoy watching the world going by, as well as enjoying a drink.
Kirsten, a former pupil at Douglas Academy, said: “I realised very quickly that spray paints would not be ideal because of the wind so I then needed to paint the mural by hand. It was a very enjoyable project but it did take far longer than I thought it would. I was still painting three weeks after I started.
Kirsten says: “I am really pleased with the reaction to the mural from local people. Finsbay co-owner Billy Miligan says: “The lane now looks much better thanks to the stunning mural. We are very pleased with what Kirsten has created.
The mural includes many references to Milngavie and the surrounding area.

‘map oUr core paths’ A walking charity is campaigning to change the way that local paths in Scotland are mapped – and therefore used by new people.
The charity believes there are many benefits to highlighting Core Paths, including improved health through walking and cycling and easier exploration of new areas by local people and visitors. Danny Carden, of Ramblers Scotland, says: “Many core paths are an important link for communities but there are lots of them that people don’t even

Ramblers Scotland is hoping for support from local Scots as they call for leading UK map maker Ordnance Survey to add 20,000km of Core Paths to their maps. Yet in May she ran an impressive 32:04 10k to qualify for next month’s IAAF World Championships.
Scottish champion runner-turnedtriathlete-hopeful Beth Potter appears to be reaping the benefits of cross-training as part of her new sport.
Beth, who attended Bearsden Academy, said: “Although I’m not focusing on the one sport, I feel as though I’m running well on the track. I’m looking forward to the World Championships.” Beth quit her job as a physics teacher last year to train as a triathlete. She now shares a house with Rio silver medallist Jonny Brownlee in Yorkshire and trains with both Brownlee brothers.
As a child she swam at Milngavie and Bearsden Amateur Swimming Club and ran with Beth, who grew up in Bearsden, has been focusing on training for Victoria Park Athletic Club. The Western Wildcats Hockey Club Summer Camp returns this month with opportunities for young players of all abilities to join in.
She says: “Hockey is perfect for staying active and improving fitness. It is also a great way to make friends.
The Summer Camp 2017 welcomes players, both boys and girls, from Primary 1 upwards to join a week of hockey. The five-day course from Monday July 31 to Friday August 4 is coached by the talented Wildcats’ First Team players.
“Hockey is a sport that can be played at school, university and as an adult, all over the world. I have made many long-term friends through the game”
One of the coaches and part of the Wildcats 1st team, says: “The children will not just develop their hockey skills at the camp but they will also play other grass games, such as rounders and dodgeball.
Furthermore, this year the club is offering a “performance” group for older children, which will be coached by U21 Scotland players. This is aimed at children who are already excelling in the sport.
“Another fun part of the camp is when the children work in groups to come up with a 'showtime’ piece. This will be performed at the Wildcats’ summer camp BBQ and in front of family, friends and other campers.”
Each day, the Summer Camp starts at 9am and finishes at 5pm. It is also possible for parent to request an early drop-off and late pick up if required. The cost per child is £164, with family discounts for two or more siblings attending the same camp.
The hockey camp is meant to be fun as well as instructional.
Rebecca reveals there are many benefits to playing hockey.

Staff of the White Lily Fund receive a cheque for £200 from Waitrose Milngavie represenatives as part of the Waitrose Green Token Scheme
A local charity is delighted to have been chosen to receive a donation thanks to the Waitrose Green Token Scheme. The White Lily Fund were recently Angela created the White Lily Find in 2012 after she recovered from handed a cheque for £200 from breast cancer treatment herself. Waitrose Milngavie. The Green Token Scheme is run by Waitrose stores across the UK. Customers are given a token at the end of their shop to place in the Community Matters box. Each store chooses a number of local causes and charities. The White Lily Fund raises funds for cancer research and to promote awareness of the disease in the west of Scotland. The founder and president is Angela Bruno MBE from Bearsden.
Angela says: “I want to personally thank Hilary Blair, the partner coordination manager of Waitrose Milngavie, as well as their customers for their wonderful support. “Funds are always gratefully received and we are so very pleased to have the continued support locally for our charity.” You can donate at Waitrose Milngavie store on Glasgow Road. Last month I ran my first marathon in Stirling. It was a great experience, both on the day and in the months of training leading up to it. I have benefited physically from the exercise and also found running a great way to clear the mind! However, I was struck by how many of my fellow runners had also used the opportunity to raise funds for others, through various charities, to support people and their families affected by diseases such as cancer, diabetes and dementia. It was a reminder also that many people do things for others, either as volunteers or fund-raisers,

in the process gaining from it themselves. Often this work goes unnoticed and without volunteers in our local community many things would simply not happen. Volunteering can help people learn new skills, make friends, build confidence and for younger people can be a useful way to gain certificates and awards, such as the Duke of Edinburgh awards. Locally work is being done to raise awareness about volunteering, for all age groups, and it would be worthwhile contacting your local authority to find out more, if you are interested. its own special story... Check out the leisure centres – there are plenty of indoor sports and activities children can participate in. The swimming pools in our area often offer special deals and fun days. Museums and galleries often have new exhibitions and events running in the summer. Many art galleries put on special events for children and families, and they are usually free. You could go geo caching. The Clyde Sea Lochs trail is dotted with information boards with a new set of caches themed around the Lochs. Download the free app to your smartphone, check out other caches local to you and get going. It soon becomes addictive. If you are near the coast, or indeed on holiday near the beach, try
beachcombing - it’s amazing what little curiosities you can find. A favourite and great for our windy shores too is a kite, they can be bought from bargain shops very cheaply and provide loads of fun.
If it is raining have a movie day with popcorn - homemade of course, or get cooking. Pick a recipe with the children, go shopping for ingredients and cook something together that you can enjoy eating afterwards. Sunny days are great for simple activities like picnics and ball games. This can be done as close to home as in the back garden. Build a den with the kids - if the weather is ok, you could even risk doing this outside.
Don’t forget the timeless classic of just visiting the park or fi nd a fruit picking farm. This is the perfect crowd pleaser. With your bounty from fruit picking try making some jam. And lastly, with all these wonderful activities, you can make a fabulous scrapbook of all your summer memories – or use a handy app to turn your holiday photos into a slick movie complete with music track.
All you need is some boxes or sofa cushions, a few blankets, and a bit of imagination.

Juries are a cornerstone of our legal system. They can be used for criminal trials as well as some civil matters, such as personal injury cases. It is a civic duty and you must attend court if you are cited as a juror, unless you are ineligible, disqualified from doing so or excused. In criminal cases it is the job of the jury to listen to all of the evidence and submissions made for both sides and then decide if the case against the accused has been proven. It is a serious role with significant consequences for the individual on trial. The selection process is done

Westerton Care Home expands for tHe future A Bearsden care home is set to expand after demand for places has soared in the past few years.
Since opening in 2012, Westerton Care Home has cared for over 100 members of the local community, providing the highest standards of care within a safe, friendly and warming environment. The expansion plans see the addition of an extension onto the existing home, establishing a new wing which will include 12 new bedrooms, as well as creating a new reception area for the home. Works have already begun, with completion expected in Spring 2018. Home Manager Adelaide Maynard is excited about the plans. She said: “Works have already begun on the extension, and it’s great to
see everything taking shape. As Westerton itself was custom built, the new wing will mirror the high quality of finish.

There are two different weeks of summer camps that are run by EDLC Football Development in Bearsden and Milngavie.
“Football is a great way to get to meet new friends and to enjoy the challenge of working together in a team sport.”
The first takes place at Allander Leisure Centre from July 10 to 14 while the second week is at Bearsden Academy from July 31 to August 4.
The football summer programme is likely to fill up fast so early booking is recommended. You can fi nd a booking form at www.edlc.co.uk/sport-leisure/ football/football-developmentsummer-holiday-programme. It should be noted that girls can attend any session, as well as the girls’ only classes.

This month: elDerlY aSSiSTanCe For an elderly person to admit they need help would mean they can't take care of themselves anymore, and no one wants to lose their independence. Usually, the burden falls on family members to recognize the signs that an aging parent might need some extra help with daily living tasks, but this doesn't necessarily mean that your loved one has to move into a care home. They may just need some extra help in their home. Here are some signs to look out for: Changes in Physical Function and Mental Status – Can’t keep track of time – sleeping a lot – poor diet or weight loss – diffi culty with mobility – missing appointments – more prone to falls – forgetting to take medications – poor ability to
administer personal hygiene – less involved in social activities. Neglecting Household Responsibilities is often another indicator and can include having little fresh food in the house, more clutter than usual, dirty laundry and having unopened mail. Even if you don’t live near-by to your parents but are concerned about their health and wellbeing, there are many things you can do to ensure your parents are getting the support they need. If these signs are present, it doesn’t necessarily mean a move to assisted living or a care home is required. However, these red fl ags do indicate that daily supportive care is needed. Home Instead can help with an assessment of needs if you have any concerns.

The touring Wizard School is run by magician James Kennedy and will come to Bearsden Cross Church on Tuesday July 25 and Wednesday July 26. It is open to children aged six to 15. James believes that learning about magic has many benefits. He says: “Wizard School is a concept that is designed to create magic and wonder for children. “The workshops are great fun for youngsters and give them the
By the end of the day they will have the skills and confidence to perform the tricks they have learned to their friends and family. James says: “After their little show, the children are presented with the much coveted Wizard School certificate. This gives the little wizards a sense of accomplishment and pride in their hard work on the day.“ confidence and skills to perform in front of an audience.” The Wizard School day starts with a “sorting ceremony”, where children are grouped according to age and potential skill set. The kids then learn about magic tricks, balloon modelling, speaking and presentation skills.

Playgroup search for new home
A pre-school playgroup that has been serving the community for almost 50 years is appealing for help to secure its future. Maxholme Playgroup faces closure without new premises after it was asked to leave its long-standing home in Bearsden Baptist Church’s Maxholme House.
past six months. We only have until next year to find somewhere new. We do not have a lot to spend and we do need the space for storing our playgroup equipment.
The group is a not-for-profit organisation so they say they do not have the means to pay expensive rent elsewhere.
“We are still in talks with the council about plans for the former Brookwood building but nothing has been decided about this. We are just so desperate to find somewhere to move to and we hope someone locally can help.
Now the group, which recently received a glowing report by the Care Inspectorate, is appealing for support. Maxholme Playgroup chair Jo Reid said: “We’re very worried about the future of our group and we have been searching for somewhere else to be based for the
The playgroup operates five mornings each week and has up to 30 youngsters. To contact them see www.maxholme.co.uk or email jo.reid1981@googlemail.co.uk.
Lib Dems win back seat Jo Swinson staged a political comeback when she won back her former parliamentary constituency from the SNP in the snap General Election last month. She had lost the East Dunbartonshire seat to SNP’s John Nicolson in the last election two years ago. Jo first won the seat from Labour in 2005 at the age of 25 and also became the first MP to have been born in the 1980s. She held the seat in 2010. Jo attended Douglas Academy in Milngavie. On Twitter she said: “Thrilled to have been elected to serve as MP for East Dunbartonshire again.

clUB serves Up fUn camps “As well as being coached in tennis, learning a variety of skills in a fun way, the camps include lots of other activities. Kids can expect all sorts of things to do including water fi ghts, football, treasure hunts, badminton, face painting, table tennis, fancy dress, pizza and a tuck shop. There is a lot more to the tennis clubs than simply tennis.”
Westerton Tennis Club will be hosting sports camps for children aged five to 12 every morning during the summer school holidays. The camps will take place at the club, which is located just off Maxwell Avenue, in Westerton, from Monday to Friday, 10am to 12.30pm. Children can sign up for a day’s session or book the camps in week blocks. The coaching is led by Alasdair Davie, of Tennis Therapy. He says: “The summer camps are
always popular with parents and children, especially as we run them every morning throughout the long school holidays. “The camp is a great opportunity to learn a new sport, or to progress in a sport that children have already been learning. We can cater for a range of levels of ability.
Westerton Tennis Club has three recently refurbished all weather hard courts, all with floodlighting. There is a yearround programme of coaching for both adults and children and a busy Social Tennis programme. The cost for the children’s summer camps is cheaper for members but still open to nonmembers. You can fi nd out prices for the day camps and for a week’s block at www.clubspark.lta.org.uk/ tennistherapy/coaching/junior and www.westertontennis.org.uk

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
