LAUNCH OF BEARSDEN FESTIVAL 2019 The Bearsden Festival returns this summer for what promises to be an innovative, informative and inspiring 10-day event. As organisers launch the programme for the community festival, which takes place from May 10 to 19, they are calling for volunteers. The festival is also announcing new Community Awards to recognise the brilliant work of volunteers. To nominate, pick up a form in outlets

across Bearsden or find one on the festival website, and get entries in by March 28. The Awards Ceremony will be at the Festival Opening Night on May 10.

Bearsden Festival was founded in 2013 by New Kilpatrick Church minister Roddy Hamilton as a way to bring the community together. Designed and steered by a group of volunteers on the Bearsden Festival Association, this year the festival has taken on a fresh impetus with a focus on mental health. Festival coordinator Trish Robertson said: “Some personal experiences brought this year's theme to

Dunbartonshire Association for Mental Health, and a great local team of healthy living bloggers ayearofsmallchanges.com. the fore and we’ve spent the last four months speaking to children and young people, teachers, voluntary organisations, care homes and local residents about the issues we should be touching on and the kinds of events that will appeal to different people. “We’ll soon be publishing a programme that we hope has something for everyone, including people who feel well, those who want to find out more, those who want to find ways to be more aware and those with experience of mental illness, memory loss, stress and loneliness. This important topic has also brought many new partners on board, such as Alzheimer Scotland, East

“Our festival is also tied into the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival (mhfestival.com), a well-established month-long programme of events.” The festival has received funding from Awards for All, Glasgow Flightpath, the Council and many other donations so most of the events will be free. They are now looking for volunteers. Isobel Millar, volunteer manager, said: “We are running a much larger programme across multiple venues and we’re going to need a lot of helpers. If you can give us a few hours of your time, please register your interest on the website under Friends.” See www.bearsdenfestival.org

The Kilmardinny Players in full rehearsal for their production of 'The Steamie' which will be on stage later this month

Kilmardinny Players are continuing to celebrate their special 20th anniversary year with a performance of a Scottish favourite this month. The players will bring Tony Roper’s The Steamie to the stage at Kilmardinny House Arts Centre in Bearsden on Thursday March 21 and Friday March 22 at 7.30pm and on Saturday March 23 at 2pm. Christina Dowers, the group’s chair and director, said: “We welcome people to come to see Doreen, Magrit, Dolly and Mrs Culfeathers having a wee blether while doing their washing and listening to Andy and all his patter.” “It’s such a great play and the cast at Kilmardinny Players has been

However, when it was first written, Roper found it difficult to get the play produced. It was turned down because it was thought that nothing really happens in the story.

This month, a number of S5 school students from the Players will also perform a piece from The Steamie as part of their Higher Drama assessment.

Christina said: “It appeared to have no plot and just four women spanning the generations standing about talking mince. In the end, Wildcat Stage Productions were looking for a play about

CHARITY LAUNCH NEW SITE

A charity that offers support for parents, teachers and children with dyslexia has announced the launch of a new and accessible website. Dyslexia Scotwest, which has close connections to Milngavie, is an information and advocacy service dedicated to assisting dyslexic people in the west of Scotland. The two main aims of the charity are to raise awareness and understanding of dyslexia and to offer help and support to anyone with an interest in dyslexia. These goals are achieved in a variety of ways, including a helpline (0141 357 5700) and items of literature. Now Dyslexia Scotwest is proud to launch a comprehensive new website. The charity’s CEO, Duncan Cumming, of Milngavie,

said: “We know how valuable on-line information is these days and we wanted to be able to offer an in-depth website resource and the potential to help more people. The website has been designed to be highly accessible and includes a number of excellent features such as text-to-speech functionality, an interactive dictionary and a translation tool with more than 100 languages. “Specialist dyslexia software allows users to change the text fonts, text colours and background colours, too, so it

can be more easily read. We are delighted with the results. The chair of the charity, which was founded some four decades ago, is Eddie Riach, also of Milngavie. Eddie has been the chair for several years, while his wife Margaret has been a volunteer with the charity for almost 30 years after their two children, now in their 30s, were diagnosed as being dyslexic. Eddie said: “We know from personal experience how important it is for parents and children to be able to access information about learning and education as soon as possible and our family has greatly benefitted from the help of Dyslexia Scotwest. We hope that many others will gain the same support as we have thanks in part to the new website. The charity also relies on donations and fund-raising events. They are keen to sell tickets for a Ladies Lunch, which takes place at the Marriott Hotel Glasgow on June 1. For information about tickets or about the charity see www.dyslexiasw.com

A club for people aged over 60 is keen to welcome new members who would like regular social contact with others. The club was started some 20 years ago by the late Connie McCorquindale as a way to encourage the older generation to enjoy each other's company on a regular basis. The Over 60s Club meets at Westerton Hall on Maxwell Avenue every Thursday from 2pm to 4pm. It offers people the opportunity to get together in a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere, to play cards and various board games, including Scrabble.

Work has started on a new mural in the underpass near Milngavie railway station. The artwork, being created by Glasgow street artist Art Pistol, is in two parts. Suggestions for the introduction of any new activities are always welcomed by the group. A spokesperson said: "We are always happy to see new people coming along to our get-togethers and they will find they are among friends. “With tea and biscuits and plenty of chat, it always makes for a pleasant afternoon.” The cost of the weekly meetups is a donation of £1.50. To find out more call Ellen Gray on 0141 570 0791 or simply pop along to Westerton Hall on Thursday afternoons.

On one side of the underpass, there will be a “to scale” map of the route of the West Highland Way (WHW). The other side will feature a map showing Milngavie’s position between the city and the countryside. The mural is being supported by Milngavie BID and aims to improve the look of the underpass, which many WHW walkers pass through on their way to the start of the longdistance trail. The mural will be completed when dry weather allows.

RUGBY CLASSES FOR TOTS

A fun-packed rugby-themed play programme is aiming to improve the physical and mental well-being of youngsters. Rugbytots offers weekly sessions for children aged two to seven across Glasgow, including Saturday classes at St Andrew’s RC Church, Bearsden. There are classes for three age ranges. It was in 2006 that a rugby-playing parent, Max Webb, spotted a gap in the market for pre-school rugby classes for his three young boys. Today, more than 60,000 children in 17 countries

are part of the Rugbytots family. In the UK, 800 coaches deliver more than 4,000 classes every week. A spokesperson for the popular activity programme said: “The sessions are a lot of fun, while also promoting sport as beneficial for physical and mental health. Children can expect activities such as running across the jungle, wading through the quick sand or

Local people are being urged to take advantage of a free swim campaign at a Bearsden leisure centre this month. If swimmers ride a bike to Allander Leisure Centre – and take a selfie to prove they did so – they will be eligible for a free pool entry. The initiative will continue until Sunday March 24. Two other pools in the region, the Leisuredrome in Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre,

are also part of the campaign being run by East Dunbartonshire Council and East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust. The scheme is funded by the Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme, which is aimed at encouraging active travel. A trial at the Leisuredrome between October 8 and

“Cycling and swimming are excellent ways to keep fit – contributing to health and wellbeing – and I hope as many people as possible can take advantage of this great initiative." LINDA’S RUNNING FOR ALEX Linda Robertson during Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon last year, with her son Ruairi who ran the short section with her

to complete the London Marathon in April. She said: “Alexander is now six and he is the bravest wee boy in the world. He spent more than two years in an out of hospital receiving treatment for his cancer and then in 2018 he had a great year. “However, December brought sad news that there's been a new growth and he started chemotherapy again recently. He needs to have chemo every week for the next year.

A Milngavie mum who launched a poignant charity fund-raiser late last year is back running again for the same cause. This time, Linda Robertson is training to take part in the Virgin Money London Marathon 2019. It is her first marathon and she has pledged to once again raise money for The Everest Centre, a specialist project within the Brain Tumour Charity that researches slow growing brain tumours in children.

Linda’s cousin’s son Alexander was diagnosed with the cancer when he was aged two. In December, she inspired the Milngavie Mums’ Marcothon, which saw 33 women raise almost £10,000 by running every day in December. Now Linda, who has two young sons, is training

“It is important to me that I can try to do something to support a charity that researches the rare form of cancer.” Money raised through Linda’s marathon challenge will also go to The Dementia Revolution, which is the official charity of the London Marathon this year. Linda said: “I'm training to run the London Marathon because, bluntly, I can. And the people who rely on the charities I'm raising money for, can't.” If you can support Linda, please do so at uk.virginmoneygiving. com/lindaslondonmarathon.

DO KILTWALK FOR CHARITY and were surprised by their enthusiastic response. Knowing how people can become socially isolated as a result of the stigma associated with addiction I expected that they might be reluctant to participate in such a public event. But I was wrong. “It was an excellent teambuilding exercise and helped us to break down a few barriers. The Kiltwalk was a memorable and positive experience.“

The Scottish Families charity are looking for people to take part in the Glasgow Kiltwalk taking place in April

A charity that runs support groups in Milngavie is looking for people to put on their walking boots and take part in a fund-raising challenge. Scottish Families would like to hear from willing participants for the Glasgow Kiltwalk on Sunday April 28, whether they choose to walk six, 15 or 23 miles. Last year, walkers collected more than £15,000 for Scottish Families, which supports people living with the consequences of a loved one’s drug or alcohol use, and this year they want to raise more.

Colin, from a local family support group, took part in the Kiltwalk last year for Scottish Families with other family members. He said: “I have rarely got involved in fundraising activities for a charity but I made an exception last year and I’m very glad I did. “When Scottish Families sent us information about the Kiltwalk we shared it with our group

Each week Scotland sees a thousand new births, the most popular names of 2018 being Jack and Olivia. Every mother has her unique story, but there are some common messages for those considering pregnancy. Pregnancy planning should include getting your body into good physical shape. Regular exercise, healthy weight and balanced diet are important. During pregnancy alcohol is best avoided to reduce risk of brain damage to the developing baby, smoking and excess caffeine can affect the baby’s growth during pregnancy, and avoiding soft

cheeses, raw eggs and shellfish to reduce the risk of infections which could endanger the pregnancy. Iron helps make extra blood required, Vitamin D for healthy teeth and bone growth, and Folic Acid helps to reduce the risk of spina bifida problems, so these can be taken as vitamin pills for pregnant women. When pregnant the first step is to see a midwife rather than a GP. They are specially trained to look after women before, during and after the birth, and will be able to answer questions you may have. A really helpful website –

HELP MAKE TOWN BLOOM Now they are calling out for more volunteers to help with their work. The gardening group meets outside the Fraser Centre on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of the month from 10am to noon. The next dates are March 13 and 23.

Milngavie in Bloom is encouraging more local people to join them to help improve the centre of Milngavie

Milngavie in Bloom is hoping to encourage more local people to “help make the town a brighter and better place”. The group, which was founded in 2008, has played an important role in improving the centre of Milngavie, as well as the start of the West Highland Way, the Antonine Garden beside Waitrose and the Allander walkway. Milngavie in Bloom volunteers also support other groups with their gardens, such as Alzheimer

Scotland, Carers Link, Gavin’s Mill, the Italian garden at Allander Road and local schools. The group will again enter the Beautiful Scotland campaign in 2019. Milngavie has been awarded silver gilt in the “medium town” category for the past three years – and this year they are going for gold.

There are other working groups, including Clean Sweep, with details found on the website. Douglas Cameron, the chair of Milngavie in Bloom, said: “We welcome young and old, men and women to join our regular volunteer meet ups and you do not have to be from Milngavie to help and nor do you need to be a gardener. “If you would rather help in your own time you can adopt a container or a garden and help to keep it weed free and the flowers deadheaded. “It is a great way to get exercise outdoors whatever you are capable of and to meet others who want to make Milngavie a better place for residents and visitors.” See the website milngavieinbloom.webplus. net or contact milngavie-inbloom@hotmail.co.uk for more information.

HOW IS CATARACT TREATED? Cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye- the only way to cure it is by an operation. No medicine or eyedrops have been proven to slow or reverse its development. Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed in the UK with about 389,000 operations performed in 2010. The decision to operate on your cataract is taken following a discussion between the Consultant and you. This includes the impact that the cataract is having on the quality of your life, whether it be work, hobbies or driving. The surgery can be performed at any stage of its development. Every operation carries a small risk and your Consultant

should go through these in detail before the operation. It is important that you understand these and ask any questions that you may have. The procedure usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes. The operation is usually done under local anaesthesia (numbing the eye by drops or by an injection of a numbing drug) although general anaesthesia may be used in some patients. It is almost always a day case which means that you are in the hospital for only a few hours. After surgery, you should be advised regarding some simple precautions to be taken in the following weeks.

CALL OUT FOR MILNGAVIE WEEK IDEAS NETBALL STAR DELIVERS MESSAGE

QUALITY KILN-DRIED LOGS & KINDLERS HARD & SOFT WOOD LOGS VARIOUS LENGTHS

QUALITY SCOTTISH LOGS EVERYTIME

A Bearsden primary school welcomed a visit from a netball star on behalf of NSPCC Scotland. Ella Gibbons, who plays with Strathclyde Sirens, took the charity’s Speak Out Stay Safe campaign to Mosshead PS. The programme aims to help children to understand abuse and to recognise the signs that it is happening, as well as how to get help. NSPCC Scotland has been working in partnership with Strathclyde Sirens, the nation’s only semi-professional women’s sports team, since 2017. Ella said: “The message of the NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe campaign is very powerful and I am delighted the Strathclyde Sirens are on board to promote it.”

The organisers of a festival in Milngavie are calling for organisations and volunteers to bring new ideas to the summer event. Milngavie Community Development Trust will once again support the popular Milngavie Week, which this year will take place from Saturday June 8 to Saturday June 15. One of the co-ordinators, Wilson Blakey, said: “Milngavie Week gets bigger and bigger every year as more and more individuals and organisations become involved. “It would be great to hear from anyone who can think of something new they could put on during the event week. We would be more than happy to support great ideas.”

Ruth Blakey, another of the co-ordinators, believes that Milngavie Week helps to bring the community together by showcasing what goes on in the town. She continued: “We will be in touch with everyone who helped put on an event last year – and we want to reach out to more clubs and societies than ever. “MCDT would also like to hear from potential sponsors and donors, so that almost all the events that make up a busy week are free to those who get involved.” To contact MCDT see info652106.wixsite.com/mcdt, email: info@milngaviedt.co.uk or w.blakey@sky.com

DOUBLE DISPLAY AT GALLERY The Lillie Art Gallery in Milngavie plays host to two exciting exhibitions this month. From March 2 to April 4, there will be a display of the actor Steven Berkoff’s photography from a period when he was with The Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. The focus is the Gorbals in 1966. When Berkoff had time off from acting, he would explore with his camera and photograph the decay at that time of the Gorbals. Then from March 16 to April 4, there will be an exhibition that showcases selected works by two Saturday art classes, one at the Gallery and the other at Auld Kirk Museum.

This is a highlight show for families and young people in East Dunbartonshire and the exhibition allows the young people a professional exhibition setting and platform to highlight their views, aspirations and talents through creativity.

The work in the Young People’s Art 2019: In Conversation With... display has this year been inspired by East Dunbartonshire’s permanent collection and Archives.

The Lillie Art Gallery opening times are Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm. Sometimes the gallery may be closed for installation or deinstallation of exhibitions.

The students had a rare opportunity to see what’s under lock and key within the gallery and Archive stores.

Please call 0141 956 5536 to check opening times if visiting the museum outwith exhibition dates.

CUTTING THROUGH THE JARGON ARE YOU demystify the jargon as much as I could.”

READY TO RUN?

Andrew was able to draw upon two decades of experience lecturing in adult education, during which time he had been familiar with explaining complicated topics, such as Einstein's relativity and quantum mechanics.

Bearsden author Andrew Conway has published a book which cuts through all the political jargon

A Bearsden man decided to delve into the often complicated and contradictory world of Scottish politics and society – and write a book. Andrew Conway’s book, How Scotland Works: A Guide for Citizens, is the result of his own interest in understanding the nation’s political debate in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis and the political turbulence of the 2014 and 2016 referendums.

“There is a wealth of data published by our governments, academics and other reputable organisations but I couldn't find many sources that explained it clearly for the layman.

The publication of the book, by Luath Press, has also seen Andrew invited to speak at events. He will be on the stage at Aye Write in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow on March 16, from 1.15pm to 2.15pm. He is also available for visits to local schools to talk to pupils about how society works. Andrew, who is a former pupil of Bearsden Academy, said: “Many people have told me that this is ‘exactly the sort of book’ they want to read and another recurring comment from folk, including teachers, is that schools could make good use of the book to teach young people about the society they are about to enter as adults.” How Scotland Works is published by Luath Press and available for £12.99 at www.luath.co.uk. Participants meet outside Westerton Parish Church, on Crarae Avenue, on March 3 at 2pm. The group is part of the national charity, Trust for Conservation Volunteers, and works with East Dunbartonshire Council to improve the woods and other local green spaces for present and future generations. “I am very happy to have another novel published and by the same publishing company. I hope people will enjoy reading it.” Joan has already had three books published by Tirgearr in a Magic of Mull series (which we featured in the Community Magazine). All of the novels are e-books and in 2018, What the Future Holds, the first book in that series, also came out in paperback. In October 2018, Joan was thrilled to become a Tirgearr best-selling author. To find out more about Joan and how to buy the books, see Amazon, www. joanflemingwriter.com and www.tirpub.com/jfleming
