A popular annual festival week looks set to be even bigger and better this summer thanks to a line up of many great new events. Milngavie Week will again run during the second week of June – from the 9th to 16th – and promises a return of many popular tried-and-trusted events for toddlers, young people, families, adults and, not forgetting, dogs and cats. By popular demand, the Spot the Error Competition in the precinct shop windows is also back for the week. In addition, there will be a variety of new and innovative classes, events and sales. These include
lots of entertainment for children, such as a free children’s art session led by a tutor at Lillie Art Gallery; a treasure hunt for kids in the precinct; sporting open days at Auchenhowie; a short essay writing competition for secondary school pupils; and two ponddipping sessions for young people at the CE Centre pond. Adults can join a Fitsteps class led by Strictly Come Dancing celebrity Ian Waite or pick up a bargain at a car boot sale to be held in Tesco car park.
Wilson Blakey is one of the co-ordinators and vice chair of Milngavie Community Development Trust (MCDT), which helps to organise Milngavie Week. He said: “We are grateful that all of last year’s event organisers have proved very loyal and willing to commit to putting something on again. “We are also delighted that other people and groups have stepped forward to organise a new range of events. We are really looking forward to another successful Milngavie Week next month.” For more information or to offer help by volunteering, email: w.blakey@sky.com.

FREE ESTIMATE Patsy (second left) with East Dunbartonshire Council Co-Leader Vaughan Moody, Provost Alan Brown, Lord-Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory OBE, East Dunbartonshire Council Co-Leader Andrew Polson and family members
A Milngavie woman who is credited for transforming the lives of thousands of people has been honoured with a prestigious award. Patsy Morrison received a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to comedy, people with long-term health conditions and charity. She is the founder and managing director of Universal Comedy, which uses stand-up comedy to help to reduce the social isolation of people with physical and mental ill-health. Patsy launched the charity 14 years ago after spending time in hospital. She saw first hand that humour allowed patients to connect with each other.
She was convinced of the therapeutic benefit of comedy to improve the well- being and also employability of people who had been unable to work or socialise because of a health issue. The charity has since supported almost 3000 people across the wider Glasgow area. Participants work with professional comedians over several months to develop a stand-up routine that is performed in front of an audience of family and friends.
THE PARTY EXPERTS
Patsy was presented with the BEM by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory OBE, on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen at the council headquarters in Kirkintilloch last month. She said: “I am delighted to receive this award as recognition for setting up and running Universal Comedy. One of the most rewarding things has been to see graduate trainees of the company, who were previously isolated, grow in confidence, flourish socially and become inspiring positive role models in their own right by performing their comedy work to audiences.

Boclair Dental Care will sponsor the Glasgow Triathlon Club youth aquathlons, which are held twice a year at Allander Leisure Centre, from August – and going forward.
The funds raised by club events go towards buying and maintaining equipment, subsidising club kit and stocks of kit for low cost hire and delivering sessions for junior members. Dr Drew Gibson, Principal Dental Surgeon at Boclair Dental Care, said: “We have chosen to sponsor this event to show our support for local sports clubs.

The sponsorship will help with some of the costs for the aquathlons. The funds raised from the swim-run races in spring and late summer provide the club’s junior section with a key source of fundraising.

A competition – and sale – of rare and extraordinary plants is being held in Milngavie this month. The Scottish Rock Garden Club: West of Scotland Group brings the show to Milngavie Town Hall on May 5, from 11.30am to 3.30pm. The event includes more than 100 competitive classes of flowers and plant, mostly alpine mountain, woodland and moorland, originating from some of the wildest and most inhospitable regions of the world. Most of the classes are for members only, although there is a non-member section. There will also be sale stalls. Further details from John Lee, the show secretary, on 0141 944 2411 or at www.srgc.net.
CYCLE SHOP RAISES £1300 FOR MS CHARITIES Local bike and repair shop Mugdock Country Cycles recently hosted an event that raised more than £1,300 for several MS charities. Shop owner Keith Mclellan, of Milngavie, came up with the idea for the movie evening and raffle. Keith is a long-time friend of Andy McKenna, who has MS, and his wife Aneela. One of the films shown on the night was “This Way Up”, which tells the story of Andy’s 10-year battle with MS and his quest for a drug-free path to health. Keith said: “It was a fantastic event and we are delighted by the money we raised. It will go to Andy’s chosen charities,
Overcoming MS and the Swank Foundation. “I want to thank everyone who came along and also the companies that donated prizes for the raffle, including Glengoyne Distillery, Madison Clothing, Jungle Products and mountain biker Danny MacAskill.” More information about Andy's charities and his fundraising campaign can be found at www.stokedonms.org.uk. * There is more news from Mugdock Country Cycles, too, with the expansion of their business at Mugdock Country Park. We sell on-line and in shops, such as at House for an Art Lover in Glasgow and Robert Burns House in Dumfries. “David also works on commissions and a growing area is local people who ask for their garden or home to be depicted in watercolours.” The family is delighted by how the company has grown. What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: GOING WITH THE FLOW... Being in the heart disease capital of Europe, we need all the help we can get to reduce the risks of heart attack and stroke, the main causes of death and disability in Scotland. Risks are increased by high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol. Fortunately drugs called statins are available which lessen blood vessel narrowing and blockage in the heart and the brain, by lowering cholesterol levels, and dampening inflammation in blood vessels. There has been some negative publicity surrounding these drugs, and people can be
sceptical when they are recommended. Although they can cause side effects such as muscle pains, nausea or liver or kidney problems, these are rare, with only 1 in 10,000 people likely to get a serious side-effect. There is good evidence that statins are very effective in reducing the risk of stroke and heart problems by protecting blood flow and can be a simple way to help keep you well for longer. There are five different types of statin, and your doctor can offer alternatives if you have side-effects. For the rest of us, prevention is better than cure, so look after yourself with regular exercise and a healthy diet!

The school grounds were identified as one of a handful of locations for additional tree planting made possible by a £25,000 grant secured by the council from the Scottish Government. The Air Quality Control Funding is supporting a programme to plant trees and create meadows along busy Duntocher Road. As part of their John Muir Trust award, 15 pupils from S3, planted the additional 400 young trees in existing woodland areas within Bearsden Academy grounds, which are close to Duntocher Road.

Once you have reached the age of sixteen you are considered to be an adult and have full legal capacity to manage your own affairs. However, the Age of Legal Capacity (Scotland) Act 1991 provides that a person under the age of sixteen has legal capacity to instruct their own solicitor to represent their interests in pursuing or defending any civil proceedings, so long as they have a general understanding as to what it means to do so. It is generally accepted that a person of twelve years of age or more is of sufficient age and maturity to have such understanding.
There is no automatic presumption that a child under twelve does not have appropriate understanding and therefore a solicitor may accept instructions from a child under that age in circumstances where they are satisfied that the relevant child has the necessary maturity. Legal Aid can be made available to a child seeking to instruct a solicitor. Their financial eligibility is usually based on their parent’s financial resources. However, in the event they have a contrary position to their parents, then they may apply for Legal Aid without having to provide that information.

If exercise is fun you are more likely to stick at it and see the benefits. Dancing has become a popular fitness class in recent years because it is so enjoyable.

Health & Wellbeing Feature | May 2018
Body AND Mind Dance improves cardiovascular health and builds strength while also toning muscles. It will also have you smiling and feeling good about yourself, which is great for your mental health. Other fun fitness activities include trampolining, orienteering, canoeing, mountain biking and stand-up paddle boarding You could join a club that offers a bit of friendly support and competition, such as tennis, badminton or triathlon.
walking is a great choice of exercise. You could plan to walk to and from the office each day, or at least part of the way.
Instead of sitting at your desk at lunchtime or having a sit down meeting, why not walk and talk? If you struggle with motivation, a personal trainer can be helpful. Your programme will be tailored to suit your fitness levels and aspirations and many people find it helpful to be answerable to a professional coach. Personal trainers can help with general weight loss and fitness goals, or for training towards specific events, such as running and cycling.
For people with less time,
Remember, too, that being physically fitter will help with your mental well-being. Simply being more active has many benefits for boosting endorphins and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. It’s also beneficial to attend classes that help with flexibility and strength, such as yoga and Pilates. These activities have been shown to keep people feeling younger and fitter in their more mature years. And if you are feeling sore or have suffered an injury, there is a range of therapists to turn to for help, including sports masseurs, osteopaths and chiropractors.
Clinical reflexology is a non invasive holistic therapy which can be used alongside conventional medical care, aiming to rebalance your body; promotes healing and wellbeing in a relaxing and therapeutic manner.

COPPER & COLE REACHES SEMI-FINAL OF L 'ORÉAL COLOUR TROPHY...
”
Local salon Copper & Cole in Milngavie has made it through the first round and into the semi-finals of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Award 2018. This means that they will now go head to head with salons at the Scottish Regional Semi-Final event on wed 18th April at Scottish Event Campus (SEC).
Life is hectic, to say the least with being a new salon owner and a full time mum. It's not easy but I am so blessed my son is my world but my hairdressing career is my passion. After years of working in top salons from the young age of 16 from west-end to city centre Glasgow, and gaining a teaching qualification in hairdressing to carrying out make up artistry with top stylists at the BBC studios. Colette Mcewan Faichnie decided it was time to go at it on her own. Copper & Cole is a new fashion forward hair and beauty salon in the heart of Milngavie town centre, which provides contemporary colour techniques and a focus on creative cutting. An appointment at Copper & Cole is a truly unique experience.

Bearsden Academy S3 pupils showing off their customised Ottowa Chairs after taking part in a design challenge set by BoConcept Scotland
PUPILS INSPIRED BY DESIGN PROJECT A local secondary school recently collaborated with a leading design brand to provide pupils with an exciting and creative art project. The innovative initiative saw BoConcept, which is a Danish interior design brand based in Scotland, offer 60 third year pupils at Bearsden Academy free reign to customise 12 BoConcept Ottawa chairs. The artworks were then sold off at a silent auction that raised almost £800 for Social Bite, a charity that helps and supports homeless people.
Heather Griffiths, the commercial director of BoConcept Scotland, explained: “When the academy approached us looking for new curriculum ideas, I jumped at the chance to get involved.
who enthused and encouraged the teams to ‘think big’ in their visions for their customised chairs.
“The design project gave us a fantastic opportunity to work with young people and invest in Scotland’s future, while also raising money for Social Bite.
“What better way to inspire a new generation of young, cutting-edge designers, than to provide them with a dynamic educational experience working with a top interior design company?
“The creativity and enthusiasm shown by the children was testament to the success of the project.”
“I want to thanks BoConcept for such a positive partnership and a valuable and unforgettable experience for all involved."
Gillian Farmer, a principal teacher at Bearsden Academy, said: “Our S3 pupils were so motivated and inspired by designer Heather
One of the pupils, John Allison, said: “The project was really fun and Heather encouraged us to do whatever we wanted with
the chairs, even if it seemed completely mad. It was good to do something different to the usual things we do in art at school.” BoConcept hopes to roll out the art and design project to other schools across Scotland. Heather said: “We recognise that government funding in art departments can often be minimal, and BoConcept hopes to create a new opportunity to engage young people in active design through live projects. “If we can find the right support we will take this initiative to other schools.” See www.boconcept.com

The figures are startling. In the UK one person develops dementia every three minutes yet many people still feel excluded and face the disease alone. Dementia is not just about losing your memory and common symptoms include difficulty concentrating, struggling with daily tasks, mood changes and issues with language and communication. My father-inlaw was diagnosed after we noticed his depression and his continual refusal to eat regular meals. However the good news is that with the right care and support people
with dementia can still live well. There are drugs available that may help with some types of dementia and stop symptoms progressing for a while. Cognitive stimulation, life story work, music therapy and keeping as active as possible are also shown to help with symptoms. For more information on dementia and other topics of interest don’t forget to attend our free Senior Citizens Information Day which will be held from 10am-4pm on Friday 1st June at the Bearsden Community Hub. There will be many organisations represented including Alzheimer Scotland and the East Dunbartonshire Dementia Network who will be happy to provide you with further dementia information and resources.

A two-year project that researched the lives of people living locally during World War I has culminated in the launch of a new website. The website, which is the work of East Dunbartonshire's war project team, will offer a useful resource for history education in the region’s secondary schools, as well as the public. The project’s experts and volunteers looked at original records from the EDLC archives and local studies collections, including newspaper reports, official documents, personal diaries, letters from soldiers, diagrams and photographs. The

website also includes many new discoveries and stories. Sandy Marshall, Chair of EDLC Trust, said: “The war website is the culmination of a lot of hard work from the project team who spent many hours delving into the EDLC archives and local studies collections. “There they discovered many untold stories of heroism, duty, humour, personal sacrifice and local community endeavour from World War I.

Maxholme Playgroup, based in Bearsden are looking for help to raise funds for upgrades to their new venue
Organisers of a Bearsden preschool playgroup are appealing for help to raise ÂŁ12,000 to secure a new base from this summer. Maxholme Playgroup, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, needs the funds for upgrading works at Bearsden Scout Hut, where they hope to relocate to in August. The Care Inspectorate has drawn up a list of requirements for the nursery’s new home. Alix Edmonds, secretary for the playgroup, said: “We desperately need the funds so that we can secure a new place from which to run the nursery. Without this base
we will not be able to continue to offer affordable pre-school nursery places for children. Maxholme Pre-School Playgroup, which caters for youngsters aged two-and-half to five, is required to vacate its current home at Bearsden Baptist Church. Alix said: “The church gave us notice to quit last year and since then we have been trying to find a new base for the playgroup. Alix said: “Our playgroup is a registered charity run by a voluntary parent committee. Currently, Maxholme is the only nursery whose childcare fees are covered solely by council funding to serve Mosshead and Bearsden primaries, as there are no local authority nurseries for these schools. It would be a huge loss to the community if we have to close our doors. We are hopeful of raising the funds to continue Maxholme after the summer.
