JOBS: Local businessman, Gregg McIntosh has already endeavoured on giving a young person a chance at new emploment.

Could it be that some talented young adults are being “lost in the system in the sometimes demoralising local jobhunting stakes? Gregg McIntosh of Oakburn Gardens and Trees in Alexandria is pioneering, in his own small way, an approach which he hopes many other businesses of all kinds will take on board – and says

everyone stands to win. He’s effectively giving a job to local man Steven Shallan, 18, who has every prospect of training to become a fully-fl edged specialist in a complex and demanding line

experience of how this approach can work in practice, fl ags up the example of a Glasgow firm which was able to take on two adults who could have faced major diffi culties – and maybe the depression that comes with regular rejection - gaining employment by the usual route. Now they are trained in website design and development and social media management, and are seeing their services leased to local fi rms which benefi t from employing them in several important ways. As we head into a challenging new year many might agree that any approach which sees people as individual talents as opposed to “just numbers in a pool of applicants must be worth studying in detail. No single scheme can solve every problem, and grants aren’t always available. of work, using available support to sidestep the usual applicationsand-interviews process. “The advantage is that instead of maybe taking someone who has already worked for several companies you can mould someone to your own firm’s particular way of operating – in Steven’s case that means a mixture of work and training, says Gregg. He fears that in an area of high unemployment too many young adults become resigned to a life on the dole, and that some bright talents are never getting a realistic chance of showing what they can do with proper support. With funding at a premium during a time of severe cash cutbacks at all levels the details of individual schemes can vary, but pro-active employers can – Gregg suggests – fi nd ways of gaining valuable new blood in their companies which doesn’t necessarily depend on reading dozens of applications and going through the standard-issue process. for the benefi ts of youth social action, aiming to help the #iwill campaign in its efforts to persuade an extra 1.5 million young people to get involved in social action by 2020.

It’s an acknowledgement of his hard work and ability, which in just three years has seen him deliver community safety workshops to more than 3,500 Primary 7 pupils on topics including knife crime, road and internet safety, and first aid. The 17-year-old, from Balloch is now an #iwill ambassador under a UK-wide campaign coordinated by the charity Step Up To Serve. Hundreds of young people from across the UK were nominated, and Michael was chosen as one of just 50 representatives for 2015 of whom he is one of only six from Scotland. We’ve all seen the heartrending police posters appealing for information about vulnerable people who have gone missing. Now West Dunbartonshire is a pilot area for a new scheme designed to reduce the risk of those who need protection coming to harm.

or other related illnesses. A number of residential care homes have already carried out risk assessments for their most vulnerable residents, and gathered information which can be used to immediately focus efforts to trace any person who does go missing from their care as quickly as possible.

Adults who go missing from care homes make up a small proportion of the 40,000 missing person investigations carried out by Police Scotland every year, but are regarded as one of the most Chief Inspector James Royan, vulnerable groups, especially who leads on the pilot on behalf older people living with dementia of Police Scotland, said: “This

“When you consider that 40 per cent of people living with dementia will go missing at some point in their lives, it is vitally important that together we are able to respond quickly and effectively.” The key is speed and awareness, because obviously if someone at risk does go missing there’s an urgent need to bring them to safety before they can come to harm. But beyond preventing tragedy it’s also a bid to allow vulnerable people to live independent lives within safe conditions. Chief Inspector Royan said: “I am very grateful to the care homes and local authorities already supporting this pilot, and would encourage others to consider the benefi ts the scheme provides. “With an established plan in place to respond should residents go missing, it allows their normal routines to continue in the meantime.”

Tom weiR’s New ceNTURY It’s the 101st year since the birth of legendary mountain man Tom Weir, and the start of a new chapter in his story.

Weir-fest held earlier this year. Gordon Watson, chief executive of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park said: “The Friends and the Tom Weir Memorial Group have worked hard over the past couple of years to develop a high quality outdoor visitor attraction on Loch Lomondside which is a fitting tribute to Tom Weir and has already been enjoyed by tens of thousands of visitors.

Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs have been given a Heritage Lottery Fund grant worth £10,000 for a scheme which aims to promote the loch’s rich cultural and natural heritage – with Weir leading the way. Added to that is a further £10,000 from the National Park Authority and the Friends, adding up to a sizeable sum to invest in new ways of celebrating the loch and, arguably, its most famous champion. Tom is seen as the ideal exemplar of how to enjoy yet also appreciate and protect the area’s world class natural environment, and his powerful legacy will underpin the work of countless volunteers. The Tom Weir’s rest site overlooking Balmaha proved a massive hit from inception,

and there are now plans for storyboards, an educational booklet and a special celebration event in summer. Meanwhile visitors will soon be able to see Tom’s and his wife Rhona’s Mountain Garden, which is nearing completion on a corner of the site. Everybody knows of people who are active in community endeavours that improve the local area, but who seldom get full recognition. Which is why the annual Provost’s Civic Awards scheme aims to find the sort of people who work happily away as unsung heroes, deserving - but not expecting - any real recognition. At a time of cut-backs and acute social need the volunteers and innovators who use effort and initiative to make things better have never been so valuable. And Provost Douglas McAllister is urging readers to put forward their community champions

A panel of judges will decide on a shortlist for each category all of whom will be invited to an awards dinner in the Town Hall in April. On the night Provost McAllister will select one of the overall winners who will be named West Dunbartonshire's Citizen of the Year. The winners will be celebrated at the awards dinner, have their names added to the boards at Clydebank Town Hall, and will also be the Provost’s guests at the Queen's annual garden party at Holyrood.

Beware pension scams Older people are the favourite target of fraudsters, which is why West Dunbartonshire Citizen’s Advice Bureau is sounding a new alert. This time the target is pensions, with cold-calling scammers offering potential victims free pension reviews, better returns or quick ready cash. The aim is to persuade savers to move their funds to an unregulated investment scheme – which could mean major fees and tax penalties – while in other cases the fraudsters will simply vanish with the cash. One victim was recently pressured into signing documents to transfer his lifetime pension savings of over £100,000 from his company pension scheme into an unregulated, off-shore property development scheme. A local Pension Wise Guidance Specialist stopped the transfer after it was found that the scheme was part of a scam

already under investigation by The Pensions Regulator. Local CAB manager Joe McCormack said: “These callers are very persuasive, suggesting that they are experts doing you a ‘good turn’ and offering free

reviews and early access to your pension cash. “In fact, many of these people are not registered with the Financial Conduct Authority and they are often promoting the most highrisk, unregulated schemes on the market, often with overseas investments unsuitable for most savers. “You can get expert, impartial guidance through the Pension Wise service at your local Citizens Advice Bureau. Like all CAB services, our pension guidance is free, confidential and independent.” Face-to-face appointments are available to those approaching 50 or over. “If you believe that you are a victim of a scammer or wish to report a potential scam, you can contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. It’s important to report these calls because the authorities may be able to prevent them potentially conning someone else.” Pension Wise also offers telephone appointments- call 0300 330 1001, or visit www. pensionwise.gov.uk.

Heavenly’s 15th birthday Heavenly Beauty in Dumbarton is celebrating 15 years in business with a birthday party for all clients, whether old, new or existing. Everyone is invited to the special cheese and wine party on Saturday, January 23, from 1pm to 4pm. The salon will continue the celebration from January 26 to 30 with a range of discounted vouchers for relaxation treatments. Morag Beck, the owner of Heavenly Beauty in the Meadow Centre, says: “We want to celebrate our 15th birthday in style and so we are throwing a big afternoon party. “We’d love to see our customers, whether they are

current, haven’t been in for a while or new people who want to find out what we offer at our salon. “It will be an afternoon of fun, food and drink – and the perfect time to find out about the extensive range of treatments that we offer.” Morag, an experienced beauty therapist, first opened Heavenly Beauty after spotting a gap in the market for beauty treatments in a salon setting. She maintains a high standard

of customer service thanks to a team of experienced and HND qualified beauty therapists. The salon staff also includes a qualified and expert nail technician and sports massage practitioner, Kenny Richmond, who specialises in a highly effective form of soft tissue mobilisation called Advanced Instrument Assisted Therapy. Morag says: “Customer satisfaction and a high level of professionalism are very

important to my team. We aim to offer a high standard of treatment but in a very friendly setting. “Many customers enjoy getting away from home and value the experience of having their treatments in a professional salon.” Open Tuesday to Saturday, Heavenly Beauty offers a full menu of beauty treatments including waxing, holistic therapies, eye care, massage, spray tan, facials, make up, non-surgical facelifts, microdermabrasion, body wraps and male grooming. JANUARY 2016 | Local News

Don’t be out of pocket It’s January – and the council says it aims to help people struggling to pay for the most basic needs with a new crisis grants. Last year the Council awarded over 4,200 crisis grants to hardpressed residents, laying out more than £230,000, and by October had awarded 2,177 crisis grants. Now more cash is to be made available to allow help to be given seven days a week, and not just Monday to Friday. The move was announced late last year, and will suddenly become important to people in genuine need who are trying to make ends meet during the long bleak weeks of January.

“As a council, we’ve always done what we could to support these residents during the week, and I’m delighted this new money means that help can be provided seven days a week. ” The out of hours service can be accessed between 8:45am and 4pm, every Saturday and Sunday by calling 01389 737640. Applications can also be made online www.west-dunbarton.gov. uk/benefits-and-grants/welfarereform/crisis-community-caregrants/

This month: MORE THAN SKIN DEEP... Here we are again. January. Christmas is over and it’s time to lose weight. For most people it’s about appearance, avoiding moving up a clothes size. However there is a more serious issue. Overweight and obesity are recognised as the biggest health challenges facing the country, and it’s a growing problem...if you’ll pardon the pun! In 2014 63% of Scots were overweight or obese. Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980, with 600 million obese people worldwide. Shockingly, it is linked to more deaths worldwide than starvation. Linked with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure

and cancer, obesity shortens lives. It can lead to arthritis, indigestion, gallstones, infertility, depression and sleep apnoea. Only last month warnings were issued to obese women about the risks of miscarriage and premature birth in pregnancy. We are running up a huge bill with the NHS as a result of the impact of these diseases. Yet it is an easily preventable condition. The World Health Organisation recommends two things. Exercise more and eat less. People should limit energy (calorie) intake from fats and sugars, eat more fruit and vegetables and exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. Easier said than done? If at first you don’t succeed....!

MUSIC WINNERS: Dumbarton Rotary president Ian McLean (middle) with winners James McIntyre (left) and Miruna Popescu (right)

The area’s five secondary schools sent 13 young musicians to contend the prestigious annual Rotary award – with “excellent” results. The Rotary Club of Dumbarton has held a similar competition for primary schools for some years and this was its second event for secondary pupils. The senior contest seems to be a runaway success, providing a focus for talented school musicians to hone already impressive skills. In the two competitions for instrumental and vocal performances the standard was said to be “extremely high” The instrumental was won by

Miruna Popescu of Vale of Leven Academy on the piano with performances of Shui Cao Wu by Mingxin Du and Serenade by Franz Schubert. The winning vocalist was James McIntyre of Our Lady and St Patrick's High School with renditions of An Sylvia by Schubert and Irish Blessing by Bob Chilcot. And now both have the opportunity of progressing to the Rotary District final in the near future.

Dumbarton Rotary president Ian McLean said: “Joe Traynor (Culture and Creative Learning section head) gave invaluable assistance in liaising with the schools - whose music staff have to be thanked most sincerely for providing us with such high quality participants. “The Club was very grateful to Riverside Parish Church in Dumbarton for generously allowing the use of its premises and to hall keeper on the evening, Jim Fitzsimons, for his very willing assistance. The event was organised and presented by the Club's Youth Activities Committee which arranges a variety of competitions and other activities for the benefi t of young people in Dumbarton and the surrounding area.

One of the area’s most exhilirating charity fundraising attractions will be the scene of a hair-raising bungee jump on Sunday, March 20. The leap from the Titan Crane in Clydebank is rightly described as “a truly unforgettable experience”, and this time around places cost £30 per person (minimum age 14) with a sponsorship target of £140. The cause which will benefit is Action for Children Scotland, and those taking part are promised full assistance from experienced and qualified bungee jump masters. It’s an event likely to prove popular, so if you are interested contact organiser Stuart Laurie at Stuart.Laurie@actionforchildren. org.uk

Deciding to end a relationship can be an extremely difficult decision and the subsequent raising of a divorce can be overwhelming. In Scotland, we benefit from the simplified Divorce Procedure, also referred to as a DIY Divorce. The simplified/do it yourself procedure is a useful tool but can only be used in certain circumstances. The grounds for divorce can be based on the fact that you have been separated for one year and your spouse consents to the divorce, two years separation or that either your or your spouse have been issued an interim gender recognition certificate. There must be no children

of the marriage under the age of 16 and there can be no outstanding financial matters. Any financial arrangements can separately be agreed by way of a Minute of Agreement. You will also have to confirm on the application that you and your spouse are able to manage your own affairs and are not suffering from a mental illness or learning disability. The benefits of using this procedure are that parties do not require to attend court and it is cost effective. The fee for lodging an application with the court is currently £111 and there is a fee exemption for those on certain benefits.

Dumbarton was a modest-size town in those days, but it was one of just six to make Burns a freeman of the Burgh, so he But we’re indebted to Dumbarton clearly made an impression. Meanwhile we learn that his Burns Club for a snapshot of his arrival at Inveraray in 1787 visit to West Dunbartonshire on There are the annual Burns Nights in Alexandria, which are among some of the liveliest and bestsupported in Scotland, and local schools also make the end of the month a focus for activities relating to the national bard and Scottish culture generally.

He cheered up on the return leg of his trip, via Arrochar and Loch Lomond, where at Bannachra he became involved in a party which involved Scottish dancing and singing “until the ladies retired at 3am” – following which a punch bowl was filled to keep the lads going until 6am when, we’re told, “they all went outside to pay homage to the sun as it arose over Loch Lomond”. Among the Burns connections with the area is the poignant fact that the two nieces of Burns’ ill-fated love Highland Mary are buried in Renton – and there’s more on the local connection at www.dumbartonburnsclub.com

Local Neighbourhood Watches have contacted us to raise awareness of scams on the elderly. There has been a recent series of incidents whereby fraudsters either phone or attend the home address of elderly members of the public, claiming to be police officers. The fake officers will claim that they are investigating a fraud which they believe the elderly person to be a victim of. The fake officers will then request the bank cards and personal identification numbers (PIN) of the victim and claim these

In one case the victim was instructed to attend their local bank and withdraw all of the money from their account. The suspect was left alone in the victim’s house whilst the victim carried out the instructions.

get ReaDy foR winteR We’re advised to take time now to prepare for winter before predicted severe weather strikes. That’s the view of several organisations and charities under the umbrella of Ready Scotland. They says that after one of the warmest winters on record last year we are generally reluctant to prepare for winter, or feel we are already prepared. Their research, however, suggests that we are not ready with only 41% for instance even having an ice scraper and de-icer in their car. While extreme weather can happen at any time of year, winter remains the time of greatest risk. Ready Scotland says : “ The big danger this year is complacence. The unpredictability of weather patterns means we cannot simply hope that we will miss the worst of it. While we can’t stop the weather causing disruption, we can be well prepared to cope with it. By taking some time

now, we can make sure we are ready in our homes, workplaces, communities and when we travel this winter.”

• Think about what your Neighbourhood Watch group can do to help others during bad weather.

In previous years severe weather left some people vulnerable. Helping each other a little can make a big difference, and planning now can save a lot of trouble later.

Communities across Scotland have already made plans to cope when severe weather strikes. If you want to play a part in making Dumbarton, Vale of Leven and Drymen more prepared, more info on help and support is available at www.readyscotland. org Also consider downloading the Ready Scotland App to your smartphone.

• Identify family or neighbours who may need an extra helping hand in severe weather • Have their phone numbers to hand • Offer to help with grocery shopping or other essential tasks • Clear ice or snow from pathways • There are many great opportunities to help others by volunteering with an existing organisation. www.volunteerscotland.org.uk

Danny was asked to quote for a kitchen extension on recommendation from others. The quote was very competitive and included everything specified by me and the architect. The extension had a good standard of finish and all certification was available six weeks after completion. We would have no hesitation to recommend D.Halligan Landscapes to anyone Mr & Mrs Hill, Balloch

We recently had an extesnion and internal restructure done by D. Halligan and we are so pleased with the results. It’s even better than we imagined. Danny is fairly priced and you will not find a builder who will work harder for you. I felt at ease the whole build knowing we had chosen someone so trustworthy. I cannot recommend him more highly. we would certainly use his services again. Mrs Smart, Helensburgh

This month: Make 2016 a good one... The New Year is now in full swing and hopefully your resolutions are too. Many of you may be trying to keep active, save more money or spend more time with loved ones, but one resolution we can all make is to stay healthy and safe at home. Your home is where you should feel most secure and now is the perfect time to carry out a few quick checks: Here are some top tips for safeguarding you and your home: 1. Change the battery in all of your smoke alarms and set yourself a reminder to then check they are working properly once a week. 2. Many of you may have a keysafe at home. With cleaners, care staff, doctors and delivery men all

potentially having the code, there are a few people who could get to know your code through the year. Therefore by changing the code every January, it will reduce the risk of unauthorised people getting their hands on your keys. 3. It’s always handy to have a list of any medication you take with your doctors contact details on display where someone can easily find it in case of an emergency. Falls are the most common accident to occur within the home; so to lessen the risk of trips and slips, make sure to get any loose carpets or rugs fi xed and keep fl oor space clutter free.
